DVD Capture or screen capture

We are trying to capture a car chase from an indenpendent format. Is there a way to capture the video from the computer screen or DVD when it is playing

For video screen capture, Camtasia gets high marks. There are a couple of articles on working with the TechSmith CODEC's in PrPro. Jeff Bellune contributed to most of those. This ARTICLE, though a bit long in the tooth now, might also have some good tips.
If you have the material on DVD-Video, I would just rip from there. Obviously, it's compressed to MPEG-2, already, but will be better than from a screen-capture.
This ARTICLE will give you some background on the main structure of a DVD-Video, the VOB container. There are some tips on ripping in it. Also, PrPro CS4.2 can Import from a 100% DVD-compliant (very important) disc.
Good luck,

  • DVD builds with screen captures from Camtasia Studio

I cannot get quality DVD builds from Encore when the avi input is from Camtasia Studio.
From Camtasia, I export to full uncompressed avi. The DVDs come out blurry or twitching or both. I have tried the avi files in Premiere with the same results. This file does not seem usable by Encore or by Premiere. I also tried exporting to mp4.  I have tried different aspect ratios and frame rates.
    Any help is appreciated.

my video is still blurry when I play it in Premiere. I used all the same settings you used in the tutorial
Then as I said earlier, it's likely that you are running into problems with scaling and interlacing/deinterlacing the footage.  Investigate the frame size of your source screen captures as compared to the frame size of your Camtasia export and as compared to the DVD frame size of 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL).  Investigate whether you interlaced the footage on export from Camtasia or on import into En or Pr.  Screen caps are always progressive. Also pay attention to your frame rates; encoders that output legal DVD video handle 29.97 fps, 25 fps and 23.976 fps differently.

  • Capturing HD Screen videos

Hi, I want to create training videos similar to what Apple has done with their iLife 09 videos. Does anyone know what software can be used to capture HD screen capture VIDEOS? I know that I can use grab for images, but I am looking for video capture (to be used for system demonstrations) in HD. I tried SnagIt and Camtasia but the quality is not that great.
    Thanks,
    Fernando

I have always used Snapz Pro (Ambrosia Software) for screen capture; it works very well for standard video. I expect it work equally well for HD.

  • Capturing a screen shot from a DVD?

Is it possible to be watching a commercial DVD on my computer and capture a screen shot from that DVD that I could eventually then print? (I put this question in iPhoto because I imagine it would come into play at some point.)
    Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes you can but you will need a 3rd party application to take the screenshot. The system's screenshot feature will not. I use Snapz Pro X which takes screenshots, video screenshots, etc. But it's a little pricey. Go to VersionTracker.com and do a search for screenshot. You'll find a number of canididates that you can demo and see which will do the job for you.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: iPhoto 8's new option in the library rebuild pane, "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" may make this tip obsolete. We'll know when users have occasion to use it and see if that's the case.

  • I cannot screen capture DVD's on my MacBook. Help?

I've been trying to use movie clips for a project. Basically, I insert the DVD into my laptop, pull it up, get my QuickTime Player screen capture thing all ready and then press record. The moment I press record the movie "grey's out" and doesn't uncover iself until I stop the recording. Why is this? How can I fix it?

That's a feature that's been included with the system and software for a while now so users can't duplicate copyrighted material which is illegal.

  • DVD Screen Captures Cannot Be Processed

They can't be saved as a JPG - they just give a totally black blank image.
They can't be resized or cropped.
Enhance/Auto Levels does not work - blanks out the image.
I want a screen capture in order to create a DVD label.
I record a TV program on my DVR.
Then I copy it to a DVD using my Panasonic DVD Recorder.
I play it on my Windows XP PC using Windows Media Player.
I pause it when the program's title is on the screen.
I hit the [Print Screen] button.
(ACDSee image capture does the same thing - that is, same problems.)
I go into PhotoShop Elements 2 and select File/"New from Clipboard".
The image does not behave like other images.
I cannot save it as a Jpeg.
I can save it as a PNG or GIF.
I go into my SureThing CD Labeler Deluxe program.
But I cannot resize or move around the image in order to get a good label.

    Ron,
I get the same results from Media Player.
Try importing from the DVD into Windows Movie Maker. Play it in the preview pane and pause where you want the picture. Click Tools, Take Picture from Preview. Save it and open in PE. The best I could get was 800 x 600.
I tested this using a movie already on my hard drive but it should work.

  • Screen Capture from DVD?

This is probably the wrong place to post, but I need help in a hurry. Is there a way to do a video capture from a DVD movie that is paused? I need to get a photo and the only place I have it is in a DVD movie.
    Thanks,

.. if you're entitled to do screen captures from that DVD, simply use a different DVDplayer app:
    VLC http://www.videolan.org/
open the DVD with VLC, and the usual Apple tools as mentioned above are available ..

  • How do I take a Screen Capture using DVD Player?

I shot a video of MY own family using MY own video camera, then made a movie using MY own Mac and burned it to MY own DVD-R disk. However, when I try to capture a frame of MY own movie using MY own Mac's DVD Player, it will not let me because the MPAA dictates to Apple.
How can I get a screen capture from MY DVD, please?
    Thank you!

    In Terminal run:
    screencapture -ics
    usage: screencapture [-icmwsWx] [files]
-i capture screen interactively, by selection or window
control key - causes screen shot to go to clipboard
space key - toggle between mouse selection and
    window selection modes
escape key - cancels interactive screen shot
-c force screen capture to go to the clipboard
-m only capture the main monitor, undefined if -i is set
-w only allow window selection mode
-s only allow mouse selection mode
-W start interaction in window selection mode
    -x do not play sounds
-S in window capture mode, capture the screen not the window
-C capture the cursor as well as the screen. only in non-interactive modes
-t<format> image format to create, default is png

  • Way to Get DVD Screen Captures?

    Hi, all!
Since this is my first Mac with a DVD player, I'd like to try and get some screen captures from some of my fave DVDs with it. It doesn't seem possible with the software it came with-I tried the Grab tool, but it doesn't work while the DVD player is going.
Any good Mac screen capture programs out there that anyone can recommend to me? Or is there a way to do it without installing new software, and I'm just missing it?
    Thanks!
    Sue

Thanks, guys!!! I've been trying out the CaptureMe, works like a charm! The Widget goes all wonky, for some reason, but thanks anyway!
Re: the copyright issue: thanks for the warning, don't worry, I'll be good!
I also recommended CM to my sister, but all of her captures so far have turned out black. She's on a iBook 600 using OS X 1.5.1. Could she have some sort of capture-blocking feature on there (she bought the laptop used from eBay several years ago)? Or is there another problem?

  • URGENT - Screen Capture Video Quality

    Hi,
I need to create a movie for a client that shows the computer system that was developed for them.  The system is a web application and is accessed using Internet Explorer.  I need to be able to put the movie onto a dvd for viewing at various client locations.
I created a number of screen capture videos using Snagit 9 showing the user experience in Internet Explorer.  I took these with my screen resolution at 1440x900 and, when I put them into my Premiere Elements project that is setup as a NTSC DV format, the video quality is unreadable.  I have tried to use several tools to compress the video to a size that is lower than the 720x480 resolution of my NTSC DV format Premiere project and the files themselves look great when I view them using Windows Media player.  However, when I add the files to Adobe Premiere they become extremely blurry regardless of whether I've scaled the video or not.  I have tried different aspect ratios in the Interpret Footage and have even removed the scale to frame option.
Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong or how I can fix this problem?  I need to have this video completed for tomorrow evening and am stuck with the illegible screen capture videos.  Please help.
    Thanks,
    Scot

Burn your project to DVD (or first to a folder then onto DVD) and see how it looks on a standalone DVD player. It may be a problem with your screen resolutions v native resolutions, or a lack of preview rendering (is there a red line above your timeline - if so press enter).
On top of this you have the absolute problem that your are asking PRE to reduce from a 1440 x 900 screen resolution to a 720x480 DVD format. How well it does this you'll really only see by burning a DVD - but if it doesn't look good enough  you might consider using a 800 x 600 screen resolution to record your screen captures and reduce the amount of downscaling PRE does.
Which Snagit Export format did you use to import to PRE? What other export formats are available?
    Cheers,
    Neale

  • Poor quality export from imported mp4 screen capture

My video source is an mp4 file created from a screen capture of a unix app running on a PC. Quicktime plays the mp4 file fine (lots of detail, dark blacks, ...), but the resulting movie (Share > Export Movie > HD 720p) is faded. When shown on a large screen, the movie is pixelated and faded (grey blacks, etc.).
I imported the mp4 file into iMovie (File > Import > Movies) with Fit in Frame, Optimize video unchecked, Widescreen (16/9), and 30 fps NTSC.
I have tried various combinations of import and export settings and the above is the best I get.
I'm guessing the import is throwing half the information away (hence the faded appearance). Whatever the cause, is there a way to import mp4 files into iMovie and get the same quality on the export? I tried exporting the entire import and got a file about half the size.

Your description of the problem - a 'comb' effect - sounds as if the "fields" which make up the resultant picture have been put together in reverse.
(..You don't normally see 'interlaced' video in iMovie's playback window - you normally see just a single field of the two, to make the picture clearer and simpler to display..)
[..A video picture's generally made up of two "fields" which each comprise half the number of lines down the screen: one field comprises the odd-numbered lines, and the other the even-numbered ones. Your exported video should be encoded with the lower (2nd) field first ..as described in this Apple document ..and the problem's mentioned here as well..]
However ..you said in your first post that "..I am using a Sony HDR-HC1 and trying to export at the highest possible settings.."
This is an HDV camcorder, and you didn't say if the original footage which you shot was HDV or normal DV. (HDV is recorded differently from normal DV, as it's recorded in a more compressed format, and it has to be automatically 'unscrambled' by Apple's Intermediate Codec while you're importing it into iMovie HD.)
It seems as if somewhere along the chain of importing>editing>exporting, the fields are being reversed, so that you get this jumpiness on replay when QuickTime tries to deliver a "highest quality" interleaved replay of both fields:
Ah ..sudden thought: you mentioned that you exported thro' iDVD: "..I have used iDVD by dropping it into a DVD theme and it seems to work ok, although the playback is a little jumpy, not quite as good I would have expected.."
You may have left the iDVD settings at their default 'NTSC' instead of switching them to PAL.
Check your iDVD Preferences ..that may be the problem.

  • Premier Pro CS4 and Camtasia imported screen capture

I have a question from one of you professionals regarding Camtasia screen capture video imported to PP. I used several settings that was suggested in the posts in these forums and others and the quality of my video is still very bad. Please Help:
I am making a four minute training video that includes some screen shots of software. The final video will be put on DVD and Flash for website.
My capture settings of Camtasia are 1024 X 768. I used Tech smith codec and I used Logarith codec to produce the video in AVI from camtasia.
I set my PC screen size to 1024 X 768 as well.
My Premier Pro CS4 Setting HDV 1080i, 29.97 frame rate. 1440 X 1080 Frame size.
I also used the following frame sizes DV NTSC, 29.97 frame rate. 720X480 frame size
    I also used MPEG2, HDTV 720p, 29.97High quality, 1280 X 720 frame rate
None of the above settings worked. Please help
    Thank you

This ARTICLE and the included links might be helpful. Be very sure to look at all of the replies by Jeff Bellune on using the TechSmith CODEC's from Camtasia. I think that he replied in most linked threads.
