DVD Case Issue

I posted an issue concerning a new Macbook Pro I purchased the week before last and Apple have removed the post from this forum claiming it was not of a technical nature. I advised people to check their new Macbook Pro 17" under the area of the DVD as I found the lower case indented. I have had two occassions now where the DVD has not ejected but can here a noise which sounds likes its trying an meeting resistance. Apple service advised me yesterday the lower metal case is not covered by warranty and yet from a techincal standpoint the indentation may be causing the DVD intermitent problem. As this is a "fit to use" technical issue I think it is appropriate to be highlighted in the forum and perhaps someone can help by suggesting another way I can determine if the DVD is having an issue. I think Apple do not want the lack of claim on the lower case to be public knowledge. The Apple service centre stated they cannot help me even though I purchased the laptop just recently. So perhaps there is another technical solution to sorting out the DVD problem and manufacturing case issue?

They don't come with dented cases, so who dented it? You must have. I can see a dent near the slot affecting its performance. Buy an external firewire DVD drive and gain a ton of speed and save a ton of money vs. the repair which they rightfully say you are responsible for.

  • ITunes for 64bit Windows 7 Driver/CD/DVD/Drive Issues-

    Hi There
I am sure that there are many many users out there suffering the same frustration as me in regard to ITunes just not working properly with Windoews 7 (64Bit).
I have been trying to solve the mystery of "ITunes for Windows Registry Settings Warning When Opening Itunes.
I have tried all the recommended actions to correct this problem without any success and I do mean ALL.
Below is a screen shot of my registry, can anyone see anything wrong with it?
In the meantime (Last four months) I have stopped using ITunes and instead have used Digital 7, this will be my very last attempt to get ITunes working properly, failure will mean consigning ITunes to the same place as any other Software that does not do wshat it says on the can.
    I hope someone can help.

That's good that it is in device manager, but what about in Computer with the rest of the drivers?
Also, are the drives listed in Computer and device manager or just device manager?
I want to verify if the symptoms are present for a particular software issue before looking at other issues.  I really doubt it is a driver issue at this point.  If it was, then I suspect the issue would be present from day one.
It could be that the lens has dust buildup preventing it from working properly.  They do make CD cleaning kits that have a special CD designed to clean the laser as it passes over the lens.  If you happen to have one of these, or access to one, I recommend trying this step to make sure it isn't as simple as dust buildup interfering with the laser.
It could also be hardware failure, but I would like to try a few other steps before coming to that conclusion.
It may be worth reviewing this document as it covers a lot of the most common issues behind DVD drive issues. Feel free to skip any steps you have already tried.
    Let me know what happens.

The CD is ejected after a short while and never mounted. I have cleaned the optics of the CD drive and reset my PRAM.
Has anybody discovered a complete solution for this problem.

  • Recommendations for creating dvd case inserts?

Hello! As far as I can tell, iDVD 6 has no feature for creating dvd case covers/inserts.
I'd appreciate recommendations for inexpensive or free software for making such covers.
    Thanks!
    David

You're welcome, David. I'm not familiar with all the Sharpie product line, but the common one that marks anywhere uses a fairly harsh solvent, and in theory could eat through to the reflective coating of the DVD. I found a Memorex product at Fry's Electronics named, "CD Marker." It is labeled non-toxic, water-based.
Personally, I've not had any problems with the sticky labels (I've used Memorex and CD Stomper labels for a few years) but there are some strong feelings opposed to their use (and I can imagine a problem could come up in 10-15 years). You can do a search in these forums; an alternative is printing directly onto the DVD if you have the right printer and disks.

  • Printing dvd cases of mac themed templates

Is there a way to save the preformatted theme that we have created when making a DVD - and print them for DVD cases? Like their "travel" theme, I used that for a movie and I'd like to be able to print that as the cover of a DVD case. I don't see anywhere where I can save as a picture the DVD title page that iDVD creates (with my drop in pictures). I'd like to have conformity from what comes on the screen when you put the DVD in to what is on the case. Thank you.

Since it takes more resolution for a decent print than a decent image on a monitor, I use Photoshop Elements' Resize command to increase the number of pixels in the image (as described).
More specifically, PSE4 has a couple bicubic options; if the screen grab is small, the Bicubic/Smoother option will soften the jagged edges as the picture enlarges. I usually enlarge the picture in 50% steps, and examine the enlargement to see if it needs sharpening (Unsharp Mask filter, or use the Bicubic/Sharper option for the next enlargement). Same type of process that I use to create a poster-sized print from a standard-sized original.

  • Suitable Prog For Printing VHS and DVD Case Covers

I'm trying to do with Tiger in my MacPro what i'm used to doing in OS9.2.2 and OSX.3.9 which is produce DVD and VHS case covers with printed material usually frame grabbed from relevant films in FCP then titled up to finish off the product. The covers then relate to the film content.
The prog I used has long ago been left behind somewhere with no hope of my finding it so I've been accustomed to taking a past finished one then altering it in Quark Express (from where I think it originated) and my question is, does anyone know of such a programme to be used in OS10.4.8 on my MacPro. At the moment I'm labouriously copying appropriate stuff from any film into 0S9.2.2 order to use the prog I still have there.....
    Thanks for any input.
    Ron

    Hi Ron!
There are a lot of possibilities, depending on how complex you want them to be, and how many $$ you are prepared to spend.
Adobe Illustrator does a great job, but so does Word: make a three column document, adjust them to fit the front, back and spine of the DVD case, and away you go!
Virtually any graphics program has templates for doing this.

  • Third party DVD player issues

Recently, I have come across an issue playing back DVD's with
VLC or XBMC. When I start playback of the DVD, it plays the first
segment ( the studio leader at the beginning) and will then just quit.
Apple's DVD Player works fine (quality is crappy and can't get surround
tracks out of it). Yet, when the DVD is ripped to the hard drive and
played from there, it is works just fine.
Also, this happens when the DVD is played back from an internal
    or external drive.
Has anyone else seen this issue or do I have a unique problem?

My unit is a 2010 MacMini with HDMI. (see list)
The quality issues with Apple DVD player vs. other solutions are certain
scenes have a graininess akin to noise on old analog tv's that aren't
present on the other players and severe banding in gradients that
do not appear in other players, at least when they were working.
As far as the audio, selection in the DVD's menu itself just makes no difference.
Tried all the combinations of messing with Audio MIDI setup, third party
plugins like Perian, none of which work for Apple's DVD player. This was
the other reason for going to third party players, the higher quality video
    was just a bonus.
Your point has been taken that it may be a software issue with the third party players.
Some update at some point may have broken them, be it OSX or their own.
I've beaten the Apple DVD player issue enough, let's just consider the topic dead.
The audio issues with it are spread over many, many threads across the web, with
no silver bullet solution to all.
As for BluRays, play them back all the time on my Mini. Either with
    PowerDVD 10 in a Bootcamp windows7 when I want full DTS-HD or
TRUE HD decoding (decodes these to up to 24 bit,192kHz 7.1 since the
Mini chipset does not have the "protected" path for pass through of
these technologies) or a MakeMKV/XBMC combo in OSX. The OSX
solution doesn't give you the fancy menus and all or HD audio if present,
but if I only want to watch the movies it's fine. If I ever do want the other
nonsense, I just use PowerDVD 10. And please note this is BluRay disk
in player, not "ripped" or transcoded.
I do appreciate your help, but was primarily curious if others had issue
    as well.

  • 2.1.2 update does not fix DVD Navigation issues :(

The FrontRow 2.1.2 update still doesn't fix the DVD navigation issues where sub menus on MANY DVDs are not navigable. Using the up / down keys on the keyboard or remote causes the Volume to change and not navigating the menus like it is supposed to.
This is a severe issue as it makes it impossible to play some DVDs or turn on the subtitles.

Yeah, I have experienced this as well. Ridiculous -- how could this issue not have come up in product testing by the time the software has reached version 2.0? The solution on Apple's end should be obvious. All 4 directional buttons must act only as directional commands when using a DVD, and all other functions (such as volume) can only be accessible by hitting MENU first to bring up a list of other options.
I'm all for simplicity, but this is the fault of the boneheaded 6-button Apple Remote. It requires their software to overload buttons with different commands depending on context, which is clearly an unacceptable limitation. They'll have to break down and roll out a proper remote with more discrete buttons one of these days and come to terms with the fact that shoehorning everything onto 6 buttons is not an elegant solution.

  • Export chapter titles for DVD case/label

Does anyone know of a way to export the titles of iMovie or iDVD chapters so that they can easily be put into the design of the DVD case cover?
    Thanks for any information.

Chapter names are stored in the iMovie HD project file. They are also stored inside the reference movie that iMovie HD constantly updates for iDVD. (The reference movie for iDVD stored inside the project package. It is updated each time you save the project.)
If you have QuickTime Pro ($30, from Apple) you can use QuickTime Player to export the chapter track from that reference movie to a text file. One of the export options is to export just the chapter names. (There's another to export lots of other data about the chapter track, data you don't need.)
To export the chapter names to a text file, follow these steps:
    • In the Finder, Control-click on the iMovie HD project icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu that appears.
    • Locate the movie with the same name as your project inside the "iDVD" folder of the folder "Shared Movies".
    • Double-click on that movie to open it in QuickTime Player. The chapter names will appear in the popUp menu at the bottom right corner of the movie window.
    • Choose Window > Show Movie Properties. The window that opens lists all the tracks in the movie. One is "Chapter Track". Click on it.
    • At the left end of the Chapter Track is a checkbox. Click on it to turn it ON.
    • Click in the main movie window to bring it forward (activate it).
    • Choose File > Export. In the Save file window that opens, choose "Text to Text" from the top popUp menu at the bottom of the window.
    • Click on the "Options" button. In the window that opens, click on the radio button "Show Text Only". Click OK.
    • Save the text file. Open the file in TextEdit or your favorite text editor.

Any solution to DVD drive issue post Lion install yet?

Since installing Lion no DVDs are being read by the superdrive, this is a problem that has been highlighted by quite a lot of people.
    CDs are being read fine.

  • Satellite A100-785 PSAANE - CD/DVD drive issue

    Hello Friends,
I own a Toshiba Satellite A100-785 PSAANE and its configurations are as follows:
    1.87 Ghz C2D, 1 Gb Ram (512 + 512), Windows Vista Basic, CD/DVD read/write...
Issue: Its been quite long, i m facing a certain problem with my Optical Drive. When ever I insert an CD which is originally produced by any company it works fine. The moment I insert any CD which is personally burned with some data from any normal CD/ DVD writer or the CDs which were previously created by the same laptop mentioned above, its been read as a blank disc. The data of the disk is not shown.
For eg: Lets say if I insert any software cd like my webcam's cd or my printer's cd they can be read normally and work fine. But the moment I enter any cd which is been burned by me which contains my personal files, that is been read as a blank disc.
This issue does not exists with any of the DVDs. Doesn't matter which every dvd I insert either being a normal software dvd or being the one which is burned as a personal data dvd, everything works fine and all the data in dvd can be read.
I have tried reinstalling the driver, I have tried reformatting my laptop using the Toshiba Recovery CD provided with the laptop, but the issue still exists.
In between few months ago, I tried doing some tweak, like first i insert the cd in the drive and then disable the cd drive and then enabling it again would actually read the cd. But after few tries, this also stopped working.
Now I really have no idea what should I do to make my CDs work normally.
I hope this post can help me out.
    Your help will be appreciated
    Thanks for your precious time
    Regards
    Jeetendra

For me it sounds like a DVD, where the data has been burned, were not fully compatible.
I meet such issue on different computers. A friend of mine has had the similar problem with an non Toshiba notebook. Its matter of the disks which are used for burning.
I tested several brands and now Im using TDK and Verbatim because my CD/DVD drive supports these kind of disk properly.
Of course it could be an hardware issue too but in such case you will need to replace the CD/DVD drive

  • Satellite A - CD/DVD drive issues

    Hi guys going insane..
I have the following issues, trying to burn cd or dvd. Sometimes i wont recignise the disk as a blank disk ready to use, sometimes it burns then shows nothing on the disk, sometimes it burns most of a disk then fails, sometimes it works perfect..
Today for example i put in a 6 disks tried to copy data off hd then failed, 7th disk works fine. Then when i get back into the program, it all of a sudden wont recignise any blank disks i put in keeps saying inserted cd/dvd could not be detected successfully, there is not logic to it.. few times i have gone into only ever ashampoo and it says no cd burner device detected, never had that before.. Sometimes i have issues rarely with it finding a dvd i have to put it in a few times then it finds it.
Im not sure if its related but i have had this error come up as well, or what does this relate to?

I have restored the computer from backup disks no better, i have updated the value added package drivers, and the dvd silencer software. I have tried burning in explorer, nero, dvd shrink, ashampoo buring etc etc.. Still getting mixed results.
Im not sure if its a hardware or software issue, i have never had a problem with it reading real copy dvds, sometimes probs wih burnt ones but if i put it in and out six times it works.
Any ideas, im wasting a whole lot of cds and dvds with my failures..

    Hi
    >Whats a hardware Odd problem mean and can it be fixed?
I dont know what hardware issue could it be but in most cases the drives laser lens could be one of the reasons why the ODD does not handle the inserted disks correctly.
    > I wonder if it could also be a drm issue?
Maybe, its not the first time that music files couldnt be copied due to the copy protection but in my opinion this is not the case because you said that sometimes the ODD worked properly.
    > I never thought about it being the disks, so do you use tdk dvd and cds and have no dramas now? And were you having the same problems as me previosuly?
Well, I said only that I made a good experience which such disks (CD and DVD).
But every ODD supports different disk. In you user manual you could find a list of compatible disks
However, I think you should test the CDs and DVD from different manufacturers in order to find out the best disk for your drive.
