DVD/CD Device not working

Question

My DVD/CD drive doesn't seem to work at all. The drive won't even allow for me to put in a disc, and when I open DVD player, it states that a DVD driver cannot be found. Do I need to get a new drive? Or is it possible that this may be a software issue?

this is to weird.... have similar system to many of the other posts.. curious about other's purchase dates... mine was april/may2005... maybe bad batch.... here is my story that appears in another topic thread...
Just wanted to add that I am having the same problem.... DVDs & CDs .....
About a month ago, the drive just kept spitting out whatever I put in..... Ocasionally it would hold one and start to spin at a hyper speed(the machine[ibook 15.4} was vibrating.... Well I did the hardware test on the install disk let it sit overnite, it ran the system diagnostic test and all was well.... I was just about to send it in and then it seemed the problem had cured itself...... After doing a little more research I came to the conclusion it was because I had been burning, compressing and playing back a previously some video files in dvd player(all at the same time) and the poor thing was just all confused..... With the overnite chill out and the diagnostics test it had re-oriented itself and I woild just never try to do all those things at once.... Well I have not been doing much burning over the past month or so.... Wednesday I burned 2 copies of a playlist from i tunes..... Thursday I went to put a cd in to add to to itunes and it spit back out.... Thought it was a fluke and tried it again same result then started using different disks of all kinds all with the same result.... So yesterday I trried the hardware test boot disk and of course it accepted the disk and booted and did the test.... Shut it down let it sit and seems to work this a.m. ... Having said all that I am just now seeing alot of similar posts with the same system.... So maybe I will be sending it in for a service/replace... Unless someone has a better idea....
