DVD/CD Drive opens on startup! Whats going on?

Hey guys,
For some reason my CD/DVD combo drive now opens every time I startup/restart my computer. I have tried unplugging all USB/FW devices, running ONYX, Zapping the P-RAM, and still no fix. The only change I have made to my system is adding a different 2nd monitor and installed the video game Civilization 4, which does use the CD Drive. The drive itself still functions correctly, though it opens every time I startup!
Any idea whats going on?

Fixed it, LOL! I recently added a 2nd keyboard/mouse for another section of my workspace, and forgot I had it plugged in, and placed a small folder on top of the mouse, which caused it to be pressed, which opens the CD/DVD drive on startup. LOL!!
Let that be a lesson to everyone out there

• Why do my CD drives open at startup?

Lately my CD/DVD drives open at startup and close about a minute later. I have no idea why this started. How can I disable this?
Thanks,
Jim

Right about the time the Apple logo shows up, both trays open. Maybe 5 minutes later they close.
I have zapped PRAM but that did not fix it.

• My DVD-ROM drive does not work -- what steps should I take?

MacBook Pro, a couple of years old. Was used by an employee for 2 years, now have it at home and found that the DVD-ROM drive does nothing when I insert a disc.
What I really would like to know is what are the first steps with this. I don't want to send the machine somewhere. Should I just get a cheap external? Could it be software?

If by Does nothing you mean it doesn't even pull in the disk. That sound slike hardware not software.
I imagine it is out of warranty? If it is covered take it to be repaired in a mac store. If not I personally would opt for an external as the cost would be much more appealing. But doesn't hurt to inquire about the cost for having a new internal, or even fixing your current one.
But for my money I would opt for external.

• I have an HP laptop preloaded with Adobe Premiere Elements 10. For whatever reason Elements will "run" on click, but not even open the load screen or anything and then act like I never tried to open it? whats going on?

I bought my HP laptop in 2012, and it came preloaded with Adobe Premiere and Photoshop Elements 10
It worked fine and I even made a few video edits back in 2012 but for the last year Elements just REFUSES to work properly
I used to be able to open elements to at least the "what do you want to do?" screen
But now It won't even open this...I have no idea why...
If I double click the Elements application my computer slows down, bracing itself to load, and then ....thats it....it reverts to its normal speed and elements just doesn't open...
Any help would be great cause I feel like I've exhuasted all self-troubelshooting options and need to either get help from the forums or take the laptop in before I smash it in rage

Thanks for the reply with additional information.
Recent history for Premiere Elements points to the program having problems when more than 1 video card/graphics card is
being used by the computer on which Premiere Elements is running. This observation may seem contra indicated by the fact
that you say that the program did work well about 2 years ago in the same setup. But other factors may have set in with regard
to drivers, drivers versions, and driver conflicts. But this factor, does need to be ruled in or out.
Can you disable one or the other card to determine the impact of this on your problem?
But, of prime concern with regard to video card/graphics card is the use of a NVIDIA GeForce card with Premiere Elements 10.
Even if your NVIDIA GeForce were the only card, Premiere Elements 10 will not work properly unless the NVIDIA GeForce driver
version is rolled back to about May 2013. This may be one of the major factors here.
a. Device Manager/Display Adapters and find out Driver Version and Driver Date
b. Read the background information for the Premiere Elements 10/NVIDIA GeForce issue
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE10: NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
Also see the Announcement at the top of this forum regarding the matter - also with full details of the situation and how to fix with the
driver version roll back.
Please review and consider and then we can decide what next.
Thanks.

Add On...This NVIDIA GeForce situation is specific for Premiere Elements 10. You should not expect to see the problem for
later versions of Premiere Elements.

• Why are my DVD drives opening on boot up?

For several days now, whenever I start my Mac Pro, early in the boot process both of my DVD drives open their trays. After some period of time goes by after the boot process is complete, they'll both go retract, but something is causing this and if anyone has any ideas as to what that is, please let me know. I'm having a mouse problem and these both started at about the same time, but I'm unaware of what if anything I did to cause it...
Thanks in advance.
Rock

Hi Rocky,
To be honest i have no idea what can cause that but here's what came to mind for me...
1. Check with software update if your Mac Pro has the latest software and firmware.
2. Go to system preferences > Startup Disk, select the correct startup disk by clicking it (just to make sure). The DVD drive could be opening 'asking' for a boot disc if it can not find the hard drive with a valid OS on it in the first few seconds. This is just a theory, not sure if it's accurate
3. Go to Applications > Utilities and start Disk utility. Select your startup drive and click Repair Permissions. When done restart the Mac. Even if this doesn't fix the issue, it's good to run once in a while.

• MacBook fell, doesn't startup from DVD; hard drive remplacement necessary?

Hi, my son's MacBook fell and now it doesnt start up anymore, there's only a grey screen and a question mark.
Tried to startup from the 10.6 DVD, with C-key held down > no reaction, DVD is spit out.
Tried to startup from the 10.5 DVD (was originally bought with 10.5), and it reacts to that in that it asks for which language to use, but at the Select A Destination-window, the window stays blank: it can't find the hard drive it seems.
My brother in law says it will likely need a new hard drive. If so, what type to use and can I install it myself (once did so with a 10.3 iBook)?
From this computer I don't know the specifics (how many GB or RPM). Somebody else bought it.
thanks in advance!

>something tiny fell out as well. It went so fast, I'm not sure what it was, but I did see a tiny flat metal ring (4 mm or so)<
It's possible something associated w/ the hard drive/connector got broken when it fell. So search carefully for any other part that could have come out when you pulled the HD out, even if it's a tiny piece of broken plastic. Then could you put up a picture of that ring and what ever else you find? I'm pretty familiar w/ most parts in a MacBook and that part/s might be a clue to what got broken when it fell.
Also check the serial number and run it at:
http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
The serial number is located on a sticker in the bottom of the battery well.
>(once did so with a 10.3 iBook)< Holy buckets! That's impressive and way, way harder that what's involved in replacing the HD in a MacBook!
So based on that impressive statement I'm going to say:
Depending on what kind of external you have (Is it roughly the same general size as the MacBook HD? I.E. laptop HD size.). You could pull the HD out of the external and put the MacBooks internal HD in there ( Since they're probably both SATA) and see if it spins up when you have the external plugged in an start up the computer. If they're not both SATA you'll have to buy a USB dongle. I've gotten them for as cheap as $14.
If it spins up select it and try to boot from it. If it boots there then something broke as above.
If no spinup then HD probably toast. I've been able to get these running by tapping on one that wouldn't spin but if you try that be ready to clone it immediately. If you get it to spin up that way try not to move/disturb it, see if it mounts. If so clone it immediately. So you'll need to be ready w/ Data Rescue or Super Duper and have enough space available to clone it to something.

• I think the DVD player reader on my Mac is going bad. Is there a way to copy the files off of an Apple Install DVD onto an external drive and then do theinstall from the external drive?

I think the DVD player reader on my Mac is going bad. Until I get it fixed Is there a way to copy the files off of an Apple Install DVD onto an external drive and then do theinstall from the external drive? It's ILife 11 if that makes a difference. Finder won't let me see the files to copy. I know - dumb question.
Thanks.
Bob

Adding an SSD is not a simple endeavour like adding additional memory or adding another hard drive to a Mac Pro. That's probably why the option is only offered as an option at the time of purchase. Even if your Apple store was willing to install the necessary parts you will probably be paying for 1-2 hours of labor plus the cost of purchasing the necessary service parts (SSD, bracket, cables, etc) which I suspect will make the upgrade cost much higher than what it costs to add the SSD option when purchasing a new system.
I use my system for business and need it to work reliably. Even though I'm fairly handy with tools I would not be willing to risk damaging my system and voiding my warranty by opening my system and removing the logic board and several other parts in order to squeeze in an SSD option and attach the appropriate cables and brackets. I'm also not prepared to deal with the hassles of explaining why my system has unauthorized parts installed in the event I experience issues and need to make use of my Apple warranty. My time is valuable, so I would probably investigate external storage options, or if I needed the speed of an SSD, I would consider selling my existing system and then purchase a new system configured with an SSD.
If you haven't already done so I suggest doing a search on 'iMac SSD installation' to see what's involved. It might help you understand why the SSD option is not offered post purchase.

• Cd/dvd drive opens by itself

I have compaq presario cq62 model of laptop. I bought my laptop before 18 months ago. Laptop was working fine till now. But now its cd/ dvd rom drive keeps opening automaticaly by itself. I push it but after a few seconds it opens back. I have installed quick heal internet security & tune up utilities software in laptop. What could be the problem? Plz help..

I dont think so bcuz I never used it. Its like I bought a new bicycle & without use it gets puncture. How it could be possible. I want to know some possible reasons for this problem. Is any program or any virus responsible for this? As I said, when I bought my laptop, I installed quick heal internet security. And now I recently installed tune up utilities in my laptop. I thought this program may causing this problem so I uninstalled it, but nothing happened. The problem is same. May be, any factors are affecting this. Is it any? Or should I really replace the hardware? Thank you..

• DVD stuck in drive but drive opens on Satellite A notebook

Hi,
I have a DVD that is stuck inside the drive even though the dvd drive door opens and closes normally. The DVD was put in the drive and the drive door closed but the DVD was never snapped/locked into place.
Any idea on how to remove it?
All help will be appreciated.
Steve

Sorry but I do not understand what you want. If you can open the DVD devices door open it and try to remove the DVD media. DVD media is fixed with three small plastic parts that can be removed back. If you cannot remove alone ask somewhere for help.
I do not know what to say here. For some concrete opinion I need to have the notebook in front of me to see how it looks like.

• I just downloaded firefox4. When I open it up it goes to the google search page. What's going on?

I can't get to the fire fox start page. When I open fire fox it goes to google.

PPC Macs can't run 10.7.5.
What are you running, and what do you mean by your home page? Is it the web browser itself, or are you talking the first screen you seen when the machine boots? Do you have a specific startup application?

• Dvd drive opens by it self

I bought a HP Pavilion HPE h8xt series it just came today. I set everything up and right when I turn it on, the dvd drive opens automatically.. Whenever i try to close it, it opens again. I have to force close it buy blocking it from opening again and pushing it back in. It stops opening by itself for a while, but after about 10 minutes, the opening process starts again. There is a orange disc icon flashing next to the blue wireless icon. Any ideas/help please?

Hi itzraywhy
I don't know what's up with the dvd drive (and I would not be forcing it closed!), but that orange flashing light is showing hard drive read/write activity. That's normal.
Good luck.

On my HP dv7-7030us laptop, the DVD drive opens unexpectedly. This happens often and is very annoying. Does anyone have a solution? This has been a problem from the time that I first purchased the computer and I thought that it was just a setting that I would discover a fix for later.

Apple store installed optical drive replacement. It plays CD and DVD but will not let me change a DVD to .mp4 without stalling and or going very very slow. Can I fix the HL-DT-STDVDRW GA11NR? The Apple store is a two hundred mile one way trip.

I didn't imply anything; I simply explained the terms of the ToU here because you had not specified what you were trying to do. Most such related questions are about copying protected content and I would not appreciate having my post removed with the obligatory email from Apple because I violated the ToU. In any case, you can find dozens of threads googling (or here) about the newer burners being slow copying content if it is protected. FWIW, if the DVD was produced by a commercial outfit, they may have used some sort of protection or an unusual file format - that problem has been discussed here previously.
As for your slow burner - since we don't even know what type of Mac/model/year/OS you have, it is impossible to guess. If it's an iMac, those vertically installed burners are known to be less than perfect; the horizontally installed versions are better, but still not as good as an external. I've used an external burner for years.
As for the conversion time: the burner should have nothing to do with that; it is your software and your Mac's processor and amount of RAM that matter for conversions and rendering. I have no idea what you are using to burn the DVD. And, as a last consideration: you should always burn your content at a slow speed so you can avoid burn errors and have better results.
Good luck.
