DVD/CD Drive Problem: Works with DVDs, but won't Read CDs

As the title states, my laptop's CD drive will not read CDs (it is a satellite A205 by the way).  The yellow light lights up, it makes noises as if it is trying to read the CD, but just doesn't do it.  It won't show up as a CD being there when I look it up on "computer".  On the other hand, when I put a DVD in, it works no problem.  Anyone have any idea of what I could do?  I've tried uninstalling the driver on device manager and restarting the computer, thus allowing it to reinstall it, and it didn't help.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Try cleaning out the drive with compressed air and/or a lens cleaning disk.  This often times helps.
Next try booting to a Linux Live CD or some other Self Booting CD like Memtest.  If it doesn't then you know for sure that the drive itself is defective as you are taking Windows out of the equation.  If it does, then you know it's a Windows problem which will more than likely require restoring the system to it's factory out of box state using the Recovery DIsks to fix.
If the drive works with a Live CD then try going into device manager, uninstall the DVD drive, then reboot the system to have Windows automatically re-install it.  This sometimes helps as well.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Superdrive accepts DVDs but wont even read CDs?

I'm new to Mac's. Just bought it 2 days ago. It will show DVDs but when i put a CD (blank or even from the store) it just whirls it around for like 10secs then spits it out. It doesn't even show it on the desktop. Someone please help me (and explain with detail I'm new)

In the System Preference panels, there is one named CDs & DVDs
and it is possible the computer has been set to Ignore or eject blank
media of this type; since that option exists in this control panel.
System Preferences should be available in the menu beneath the
Blue Apple, and also in the Dock.
    {PS: Where did you get a 'new iMac G5' in these days of Intel® iMacs?}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Apple TV2 airplay audio (via Airport Express) works well with music, but won't work with any video.

I have an ATV2 and Airport Express connected to speakers all connected to the same network. It all works with music, but won't work with any video audio. In my ATV's settings I've selected my AirPort Express speakers. It works for music, why not everything else? Is there a fix or work around?

Netflix is first on that list...What I mean is, if there is a feature that allows for a wireless audio connection to the Apple TV, why wouldn't the developer allow it. To keep me from enjoying a more convient connection? I can have the same listening experience on a wired connection...

  • A135-S4527 - DVD Drive won't read CDs but works with DVDs

My Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 is running Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1. It has a MAT**bleep**A DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA Device DVD/CD-ROM drive (from System Information). It will not read CDs in the drive anymore. It doesn't give an error or anything. It just acts like nothing is in the drive. However, it does still read DVDs. Anyone have a fix for this?
    Thanks,

You can find drives for your A25-S207 at http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com
Many users have reported difficulties with generic replacement drives purchased on eBay.  These drives often lack the proper firmware required to operate in Toshiba notebooks.  I'd suggest buying an exact replacement from a vendor that handles Toshiba parts.

If you purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive, it will only work with select Apple devices. It won't work, for example, on my Late 2011 model that has a SuperDrive built-in, but it will work with an Air, Retina model, new 'drive-less' iMacs, etc.
As far as I know, though, you can only hack the drive to work with some other Apple devices, but not with Windows PCs. Which is a shame as other, less expensive DVD/CD devices will work with just about any machine.

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

  • Am using 2007 iMac running 10.4.11.  Do not wish to upgrade now.  Where can I find an external hard drive to work with it?  Also need a printer?

I'm using a 20" iMac that I purchased in 2007.  It's running OS 10.4.11,  and still doing beautifully.  But I've got to get serious about upgrading and I don't want to lose the material that's on it.   Purchased an external hard drive about two years ago,  copied everything I wanted at that time on to it.  When I tried using the h.d. a few days ago it was garbled.  Now I see that inside the box it says that it requires OS 10.5+.   Anyone know if there's still a new hard drive out there that would work with 10.4.11?   Can't even find thumb drives to work with my system anymore.   Any ideas would be appreciated.

If I were you I would bite the bullet and upgrade to Snow Leopard. You will still be able to use AppleWorks by installing the Rosetta emulator included in Snow Leopard. And, it's a much better OS version than Tiger.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.

  • I how a imac G4 it seen dvds but won't play then

i have a imac g4 went i put a dvd in the drive it seen the dvd but how can i play please help

Did the drive ever work with DVDs? In the very first G4 iMacs, a DVD-capable drive was an expensive option, so it may not have the capability.
Is this a commercial DVD, one that was burned, or a blank one to be burned?
Finding out if you have a DVD-capable drive: do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More Info" button to launch System Profiler. Once there, use the left-hand "Contents" pane to select "Disk Burning." That will show this:
[click image for a larger view]
In the main pane you can see an entry for "Reads DVD" and, below that, what kind of media can be recorded.
If "Reads DVD" reports "No," you are out of luck.
If it says "Yes," the first thing to do is get and use a drive cleaning disk. You want the kind the works dry--not wet--using static brushes. I use this one:
    http://www.ixos.co.uk/us/ixos-products-detail.asp?PROID=595&Category=20
I've loaned it to several friends whose Mac optical drives were pronounced "dead" by Apple techs, but a simple cleaning restored the drives to full function.

  • ASP application has problems working with oracle database 8.1.7

ASP application has problems working with oracle database 8.1.7 through both oracle ODBC driver and Microsoft ODBC driver
We have an ASP application running on Windows 2000 server, and with 8.1.7 Net8Client and MDAC 2.6 SP1.
The application worked fine with an Oracle 8.0.5 database.
After upgrading oracle database to 8.1.7.0.0, our ASP application works fine except when updating the same data record more than once. The application is not saving our updates.
We tested our application using Oracles ODBC driver v8.1.7.5.0
and experienced more problems. We had problems just bring up our data entry pages. In either case, we are returned with some 505 errors in our browser, problems with the ASP pages and IIS, the page is not displaying.
If anyone has some suggestions on how to fix my problem, please advise. Thanks in advance.

thanks...i saw one article with this approach..but the document did not present the detailed process...do you have one? i am still searching for a good procedure to follow...since it is an old database and focusing/studying old versions like this is a pain in the a**... :(

There seems to be a problem, just now, with the USB 3 ports on the new MBP's supporting eternal USB 3 drives. Some people have no luck at all - can't even recognize the drive - and some are reporting USB 2 speeds (those who drives are recognized). I'd call a dealer such as LaCie or OWC to see if they have USB 3 drives that actually work with MBP's with USB 3 ports. You may have to wait for a software/firmware update.

  • Strange on - Wake on LAN (WOL) works with Win2K3, but not Windows 7

    Hi,
I have a PC that I originally had Windows 2003 on.  With Win2K3, I can send a wakeonlan (magic) packet (WOL) and get it to power on remotely from my home network/LAN.
I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, in a dual-boot configuration, i.e., so I can boot the machine to either Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit or Win2K3.
As mentioned, I can power the machine up remotely (from my home network/LAN), but if I've LAST booted into Win7, then shutdown, it doesn't respond to the WOL packet.
I've confirmed that if I boot into Win2K3, then shutdown, the WOL works fine.
I have another PC that has both Win2K3 and Windows 7 (also dual boot), and that works fine with WOL.
One difference between the one that doesn't work vs. the one that works is that the one that works is a machine that I just built a couple of weeks ago, which uses an MSI 880gm-E43 motherboard.
The one that doesn't work also has an MSI motherboard, but it's an older one, an MSI K9NBPM2-FID.
I've cross-checked the various Windows power management settings between the one that works, and the one that doesn't work, but I just can't get WOL to work with Win7 on that older machine.  I've even turned the Windows Firewall off completely on the machine where WOL isn't working, but no matter what I've tried thus far, no joy :(...
The only thing that I can think of is that the network card driver (it's the MS one, from the Win7 distribution) might not work with WOL, but I've checked, and it's the latest driver from MS (Nvidia Nforce Networking Controller - 10/17/2008 - 1.0.1.211), and MSI doesn't have a specific Win7 64-bit driver for this motherboard.
So, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about this?
Is there some registry setting or something that might allow WOL to work?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jim

    Hi,
    Unbelievable!
Just for the record, I got WOL working with the older machine, JUST after I posted the original msg.
    Here's what I did:
    - I was in Device Manager, and did Update Driver, but
    - I selected to let me choose, and then I checked the "Show Compatible devices" checkbox
Then, a 2nd, older (10/6/2006 - 6.2.0.127) driver appeared, so I figured, "what the heck?" and tried that.  I then shut the machine down, and sent a WOL packet to it, and kind of forgot about it (machines in a different room), but a few minutes later "bing!", the machine had powered up and booted into Win7!!
Anyway, as I said, for the record, and hope that this helps someone in the future.
    Jim

  • My external hard drive works on PC but won't even show up on my mac?

My external hard drive works on pc but won't even show up on my mac? What can I do?

If it is in the wrong format it must probably still show up though, if your mac does detect it, go to disk utilities> choose the device from the left hand side > go to the "erase" tab and change format to "Mac OS extended (Journaled) then hit "erase".
IMPRTANT! : this will erase ALL of the files on your external hard drive
If this dosent work, make sure your external hard drive's USB port is compatibe with both USB 2.0 and 3.0 and also make sure your mac USB socket isnt damaged either.
    Hope this helped
