It may be kaput, but it also may be dirty - there are any number of optical drive cleaners that you can use, if you Google, you will find them.

Burning A DVD Disc That when inserted appears as Three seprate discs

hello everyone i am trying to Burn A DVD Disc That when inserted appears as Three separate discs such as if it had been partitioned but disk utillity.app can only partion a disc once.
I have a SuperDrive and have used it before so i know it works and that i have one.
If anyone has an idea as to how i may do this i would really appreciate any help you have.

You dvd has been written in sessions (three in this case).
You can copy all the data from the original DVD into one folder and burn the folder onto another DVD.
Do you want to make your life harder? Do the following: start Disk Utility (inside /Applications/Utilities) and click on the new image icon on top left. Pick a name for the image and specify the size (4.7 or 8.0 GB depending on the size of the original DVD as well as the rest of parameters from the drop down menus: encryption-none, format-read/write. Save the image and expand it (open it). Coppy all the required data inside it and burn it.

No CD or DVD on Display When Inserted

I have no icon on screen when a DVD or CD is inserted in my Mac Book Pro. Are there settings I can check to verify if its machine related or software issue.

I just checked those preferences, and they don't give an option for displaying them. Mine used to all show on the desktop when inserted, but now they are only shown on the finder window. I know I must have changed something, but can't figure out how to change it back.

Optical DVD drive ejects any inserted disc and does not work!

I can not read or write certain DVDs in my Mid-2009 MacBook Pro since upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I insert an empty DVD-R (Verbatim) and it is being ejected. I insert a recorded DVD-R (Verbatim) and it is being ejected.
I have tried a commercial Video DVD - (Sony) and that one actually did work ... so I am pretty clueless - I can not write any DVD right now.
In the forum I have found many posts regarding this issue under Lion already.
However, my drive used to work fine under Lion and I was able to watch / record DVDs etc.
Now, it is no longer working and I can not use it. Does anyone know how to solve this?
So far I have found the following hints (which did not work for me):
ALL OF THESE THINGS DID NOT WORK:

I also had the same problem shortly after upgrading. My optical DVD drive ejects any disk I put in. This started about 2 months ago.
I just got back from the Apple store, after setting up an appointment, and they told me that my life is horrible because my MacBook Pro is no longer under warranty as of 32 days ago. This is really BS.
However just like any other company that treats me with poor customer service I just take my future business elsewhere and make sure not to recommend them to any friends and family - as well as tell them about my horrid experience.

DISKS GET EJECTED WHEN INSERTED : what to do ?

one month ago, I replaced my old combo drive in my PB G4 15" Titanium by a MATSHITA DVD RAM UJ-845S (bought as OWC Mercury optical drive). It worked very nicely until a few days. now whenever I insert a disk (cd or dvd), it makes a few unusual noises and ejects them. what is the problem and how to solve it ? it seems the connection to the mother board is ther, as the disk seems to respond, but it does not really spin.

I have had many problems with the CD-ROM drive on my 400MHz Ti PB. Same type issue. I opened the thing up, took out the drive. Fiddled around with it for a while, stuck it back in and it works. Who knows.
I bought a 1GHz Ti PB with a superdrive. It gives me problems as well. I can only play one DVD at a time. If I try to insert another one, it kicks it out. have to do a restart for it to load properly.

Updated firmware, now blank CDs are immediately ejected when inserted

This morning I updated the firmware on my boss's MacBook Pro. Afterwards when I inserted a blank CD to burn, it accepted it, spun it around (nothing popped up on the desktop) and spit it back out. I tried multiple cds (including opening a new package of cds to try) and restarted the computer. Any ideas? Also, if I was to bring this to an Apple Store, what sort of charge would there be? One thing to try if you haven't already is to use Disk Utility to repair permissions. Sometimes these get messed up and cause problems.
You can make an appointment at the genius bar and talk to someone for free. If the MBP is not under warranty and the genius suspects a hardware problem, there would probably be a fee to diagnose the problem, and you would be told in advance what it might be. If the MBP is under warranty, then there would be no charge for either the diagnosis or the repair.
Be sure and make an appointment at the genius bar, as they can be very busy and it can be hard to get in otherwise. Bring a variety of CD's to try--different brands if you can. There's a good chance that the genius will know what's wrong and how to fix it and it won't cost you anything.

I don't know about a keyboard shortcut, but if it is the default behaviour of the system you want to change when inserting a disc you can change it in System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.

Cleaning laser lens of your DVD drive with DVD drive cleaner and see if it works.

Sounds like it could be a problem with your DVD drive. Usually it would be a problem with the lens. Since as far as I can tell it is ejecting discs right away, the usual fix of a cleaning disc is not possible.
If it is a slot loader like the offical Apple SuperDrive, you may be able to try a crude clean with the Wii Lens Cleaning Kit, although designed for the Nintendo Wii, it should work to a degree with other slot loaders.
Due to the design of the cleaner, it should remain in the drive until it is time to remove it. Though usually a dirty lens will still read some discs.
However, if the lens is sufficiently clean then the only other possibilities are a calibration problem or a hardware failure.
Certain lower quality drives can deviate from optimal calibration of the read laser over time, though with some drives it is possible to fix this, the fix has the potential to do more harm than good.
If it's a hardware failure, whether it can be fixed depends upon the type of fault, but new external drives are cheaper than most repair costs these days.
I'm not 100% familar with how OS X handles Disc drives, so I can't rule out the possibility of a software issue.

My optical drive will not recognize cd's....but it will play dvd's. When i insert an audio cd it spins but eventually spits it out.

My CD/DVD drive will only play DVD's. When I insert an audio cd it just spins then ejected. I checked my settings and it should open with Itunes. I read something about messing with the language but that didn't seem to work. HELP!!!

DVD doesn't play from the beginning when inserted a second time into a dvd player

DVD burnt in DVD studio pro, when ejected and inserted again into dvd player, the dvd plays from where it stopped the last tome it was ejected. It doesn't rewind and play from the beginning.

My DVD Player setting was Last option played, I changed it now to "beginning". It now starts from the beginning when I insert it again, thanks.
Another issue is that my First play in the DVD is a Track, then comes a Menu. When I leave to the Menu while the Track didnt finish, and then click the dvdmenu on my remote control, the Track resumes from where I exited to the menu last.
Is that something i can control ? To make that intro track start from the beginning?

DVD's being ejected upon insertion.

I've noticed a few similar questions, but most are from at least several months ago - if not longer. My mbp can accept cd's without much problem (reading them can take a few moments, but nothing unusual). However, lately I've had significant trouble with dvd's. I insert them, they appear to be read and then are ejected before being mounted. Happens with both dvd movies and data discs (burned and original).
I've done some troubleshooting (resetting both SMC and PRAM) and neither appears to help. I will be attempting a thorough cleaning of the lens in hopes that it might resolve the issue. Beyond that, however, what could the problem be?

Creating dvd to auto play when inserted

I have a movie reel that i made and saved on my computer but when i recorded it to DVD it wouldn't play automatically when inserted in the computer like a normal DVD does. Does anyone know how I can get this function to work?

Diana, welcome to the discussions.
Normally this is not an issue, but it can occur for a variety of reasons.
The first thing I would try is shut your computer clear off.
After a minute or so, restart your computer and put your DVD in and don't touch anything.
Your DVD Player should mount automatically, and the DVD should start playing.
If not, my guess is you have several video editing, or some related video files that a re stored on your computer in cache files and other places that need to be cleaned out, using some free 3 rd party software.

If you don't have a SuperDrive you will not be able to burn DVDs.
Did iDVD come preinstalled on your Mac? If it did then you should have a SuperDrive and be able to burn DVDS. Check the Disk Burning section of System Information
to see what you can read and write with your optical drive:
