DVD/CD not working. Options?

I have a 5-year-old MBP and the DVD drive is no longer working. I would like to upgrade to a new MBP but cannot right now. Will an external DVD drive that plugs into USB port work? What are my options?

If you want to use the Apple superdrive that is meant for the retina and airs, then they will not work with your MBP out of the box.  there is a modification that you can perform that will overcome that obstacle:
http://www.tuaw.com/2012/04/02/use-the-macbook-air-superdrive-with-any-almost-ma c/
However any other commercial DVD drive will work on your MBP and probably will be less expensive.
Ciao.

    Hi,
A DVD drive that is not working after many years not used:
most probably dust on the little laser lens.
Take the drive out and if you can reach this lens: clean it with pure alcohol on Q-Tip.
Many people throw away cd or dvd players all the time because they stopped working, and very often it can easily be fixed by cleaning this lens.
I used to have a G5, where I couldn't access that lens. It was very sensitive to dust.
I have fixed it several times with compressed air. One time I didn't have canned air, but a bikepump did the trick.
If you have another mac, I'd try to access the G4 internal disk with firewire target disk mode.
    good luck

  • Can I restore my system from install discs when DVD is not working?

Can I restore my system from install discs when DVD is not working?
There is a disc jammed in the drive and when I try to do an install in Target Firewire mode using a G5 Tower I get an error saying the software cannot be installed on this machine, before I can even select the iMac's drive. I'm using the grey software install discs that came with the iMac.
Is my only option to open up the iMac and get the jammed disc out?
    Thanks

Problem solved - I posted on the general Tiger Discussions as well.

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • DVD Player Not Working - Need Help Please!

My eMac is currently not reading DVDs. The drive will recognize and automatically play commercial music CDs and software, as well as burned music CDs. However, when a commercial DVD is inserted into a drive, not only will the DVD player not recognize or play it, the eMac does not even notice that there is a DVD in the disk drive.
Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    hi there--
there are a number of things for you to try. one is to do a pmu reset. instructions are found in step 6 of this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=34885 if you have an ati graphics emac or later, then the pmu button is on the right side, not the left. if that doesn't work, then try resetting the firmware. boot to open firmware by holding apple-option-o-f and then type in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command will restart the computer. if neither of those things works, then i would try booting to the install disk and running disk utility. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 if that fails, then i would create a test user (system preferences > accounts, then hit the plus sign) and see if there is any difference there. let me know how that is going for you. • HP Pavilion g4, reinstall Win7 64bit fm a DVD disc, not work

I try to fix a problem for my friend's laptop. It is HP Pavilion G4
running Win 7 64bit OS. The laptop can not start up the windows. I
press ESC to pause the start up, and run system recovery, it shows BIOS
setup, system recovery and others, I then press Fn + 11 key to run
system recovery, but it never runs.
I then remove the HDD, and connect to my computer to run testing. It
seems it has something inside corrupted. It takes so long to recognize
all partitions. I decide to format all partitions and then resize
them. Afterwards, I run test and chkdsk. Everything is fine with the
HDD now. I put the HDD back to Laptop, and insert a DVD disc of Win
7, the laptop does not start from DVD. The screen shows as follows:
    Hard Disk Error
Please run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics.
    Hard Disk 1 (3F1)
    F2 System Diagnostics
I visit the above link, I could not find relevant materials.
If I press ESC to exit start up. I can hear the DVD ROM is running,
but still not work. The screen shows as follows:
    Startup Menu
    F1 System Information
    F2 System Diagnostics
    F9 Boot Device Options
    F10 BIOS Setup
    F11 System Recovery
    Enter - Continue Start up
Only F1 would respond when I press. Other Fn does not respond at all.
Do you have clue and suggestion for me ?

You do not use Fn + the key indicated. For instance to enter BIOS you simply tap F10. Recovery would have been F11, not Fn + F11.

  • DVD/RW not working on K7T-TurboR (6330)

I'm building a computer for a family member and cannot get the DVD/RW drive to read regular DVDs or burn DVD +R.
Once I put the disc in, it should normally come up with a screen with choices on what to do (ie, Open with PowerDVD, explore cd, etc). This option never pops up, so basically the dvd will not autorun.
Once the DVD is in there, I can open Media Player, direct the player to the drive and play the DVD. This seems to work fine most of the time, although sometimes it will stutter. When I open PowerDVD and direct playback to the drive, it will come up with the region setting, look like it will start the movie, but nothing happens. I can see activity on the light on the drive, but it will only last for around 20 seconds and then I can here the drive spindown.
There are no visual errors after putting a DVD in the drive per se, but it will stutter when trying to play in media player and will not play at all within PowerDVD.
I've tried everything as far as unistalling IDE/installing with Microsoft Defaults.  I've tried installing the latest 4 in 1's, but nothing will work.  The optical drives I'm using are the same ones listed in my sig.  The DVD/CDRW combo will occasionally read discs (more often then the DVDRW) but will stutter and skip while in playback.
    Anyone else have these issues?
TIA for any help on this

Sorry, I guess I should've posted the system specs earlier:
    MSI K7T Turbo-R (6330) Latest Bios
    Amd 1800+ Palamino
    120gb Seagate Barracuda
    384mb Crucial Ram
    MSI Ti4200 128mb Vid Card
    Lite-On DVD/CD-RW Combo (LTC-4816)
    Lite-On DVD/RW (LDW-851S)
    350 watt PSU
I have since reformatted the hd and reinstalled the OS. Wierd thing is, I actually got the drive working after reformatting, but then failed again once I installed the sound card. This leads me to believe there is an IRQ conflict (although it is not present in device manager0. I removed the sound card hoping to free up the irq, but the drive failed again.
    TIA for the help

  • Optical DVD drive not working properly: HP notebook g61

Game disks and dvd movie disks not working consistently. Sometimes detected as empty dvd disk and asks if I want to burn to the disk. Other times does not read that there is a disk in the drive. Computer is about one month old. On one of my game disks, I have to reinsert 4 or 5 times before it will read properly. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you use the disk drive a lot. Before we panic and recommend a new drive, try a DVD lens cleaner you can pick up at any place that sells a lot of DVDs, like even WalMart. Run the cleaner disk and see if that helps.

  • DVD drive not working with win 8.1

Hi. I have HP pavilion 15-e020TU notebook. My DVD drive worked with windows 7 and windows 8. After upgrading to windows 8.1 , the DVD drive is not working. Windows device manager can find the DVD drive but shows a yellow error mark. I selected "Update driver software" and then "Search automatically for updated driver software" . Then the name changed from "Mitsumi CD drive" to "hp DVD A DU8A5SH". And still not working. I installed the firmware update from http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv481en&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jum... But a command prompt shows "Error: no mitsumi drives found." What can I do now ?

  • DVD drive not working on Satellite Pro U400-142

My DVD drive is not working. I insert a disk, can hear the drive working for some time but then nothing happens. I checked 'Device Manager' - under DVD/CD-ROM drives it shows: MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ862AS, but there is a black exclamation mark on a yellow circle next to it. I opened the 'Properties' dialogue box and under device status it says:
'Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
I'd like to try to try to solve the problem by re-installing the driver. I have checked the Toshiba website for the driver, but cannot find it.
I'd be most grateful if someone could give me any ideas on how to sove this problem.

What you can do is follow:
Remove optical disc drive from device manager and restart your notebook.
The drive should be recognized and installed properly. If the same happen again try please > http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/FAQ8101LA0000R01.htm

  • DVD Drive Not Working in MDD 867 Mhz Dual

I have had intermittent problems with my DVD drive. Now the unit will not work at all. I can't eject the drive tray using the eject key on keyboard, and if I manually eject the tray using a paper clip, then insert a DVD and push the tray closed by hand, the disc will not appear on the desktop.
Is there any way to troubleshoot this device to tell if it's the drive itself, or something other than that?
    Thanks,

It sounds like the drive, fairly cheap & easy to replace...
