good, nice and cheap.
Here we have a saying, too:
"Good, nice, cheap. Pick any two - all three is not an option."
Is it true if I clean the lens the problem -stopped recognizing DVDs and CDs- is fixed.
I don't know the problem you're having with the existing drive to know whether cleaning it would fix the problem, but it's a good thing to try.

  • Creating Movies/DVD's on external vs. internal hd

    Hi -
Happy holidays! I'm jumping into the iMovie/iDVD world and I picked up a 1TB USB2.0 external hd to help out with video/movie storage. I assumed that creating/editing video would work much better on my internal hd as opposed to my external hd so I went ahead and moved my 120gb of music to the my external with the idea that I would create/edit movies on the newly vacated 120gb of space on my internal drive. Was this the best choice? Or rather, could I just store all of my iMovie/iDVD files on my external drive and work on them there?
Maybe a more simpler way to ask my question is ... does it make any difference in speed/performance of the iMovie/IDVD software if the footage is on an external drive instead of an internal drive? Thank you!!

Not necessarily, you can get a new notebook drive, and a USB notebook drive enclosure, and continue to use both the new and old drives. This will allow you to migrate everything you want from the existing drive and another computer to the new internal drive and not lose anything.
In fact you can use the new large notebook drive in the USB enclosure to copy the entire internal drive and migrate stuff from another computer and even boot from it. When you have the new drive organized the way you like it, then you could swap it out with the existing internal.
Check out OtherWorldComputing for some package deals for notebook drives and USB-powered notebook drive enclosures...they are also usually bundled with some useful backup software and drive repair utilities.

  • Compare DVD-R burn quality by internal Super Drive to External DVD-R burner

Has anyone compared the video 'quality' of a DVD-R burned using the internal Super Drive
on my MacBook Pro (Windows 8.1 64 bit) to the same DVD-R burned using a standalone
Sony DVD-R Recorder / player?  One would think the quality would be slightly better using
a standard external DVD-R disc burner.

I see no difference in the video quality.  Although I use a different external burner than your brand.  It's possible some external burners are better than the optical drives on a MacBook Pro or vice versa.

  • Is it possible to boot to a Windows 7 install DVD from an external USB drive on current iMacs?

On the iMac I'm currently using, a mid-2007 24-inch, it's impossible to boot into a Windows install DVD from an external drive: I can hold down option on boot, and all my hard drives come up, but if the Windows disc is in my external DVD drive, it won't show up. I'll soon be upgrading to a late 2012 iMac, and I'd like to be able to install Windows 7 for a boot camp partition. Since that iMac has no built in drive, I'd like to know if using an external DVD drive will work on that model. I'd like to do that, seems easier than messing around with disk images. But we'll see...

You can use an external optical drive to install Windows without any problem with a Late 2012 iMac.
The reason that you couldn't install Windows from an external optical drive on the 2007 iMac is that it has got an internal SuperDrive, so Apple only allows you to use it to install Windows on your iMac

  • External and internal mikes are not automatically switching over either recording or on voice calls

My laptop model name is HP Pavilion dv4-1100ea which is shipped with Vista Home premium 32 bits and has got service pack 1.
Restored the laptop to factory setting since then I am having the following problems; I had the same problem when my laptop was brand new and whenever I reset the laptop to factory setting I get the following problems:
    1. External and internal mikes are not automatically switching over either in middle of the recording using sound recorder or while the call in progress on voice calls (skype):
Using the sound recorder if I start recording the sound with external  mike  and in-between  recording if I  switchover from external mike to inbuilt mike and later on when I play back I can only hear the sound  up till where I used the external mike during recording, after the switchover to inbuilt mike I cant hear any sound.
But if I start the recording with inbuilt mike and in between recording  if I plug in  the external mike and later on when I play back I can only hear the sound up till where I used the inbuilt mike during recording , after the switchover to external mike I cant hear any sound.
So in brief both my external and internal mikes are working fine, only problem is that if I start recording (using sound recorder) or voice call with one specific mike, I have to continue with it till the end. I can’t switchover to another mike in between the conversation (voice call) or recording, if I do so, I have to select the mike manually in chat software but while recording I cant even select manually because in laptop, it takes the mike whichever is in current use as default mike in recording tab(sound window). The green tick automatically (in recording device tab) switches over according to the use of mike. Though the green tick in the recording tab is switching over automatically according to use of mikes, its not picking up the sound after switch over during recording.
    2. And also when I click on recording device tab in sound window and plug in external mike, though the green tick automatically switchovers from internal to external mike, while I speak both internal and external mikes volume meter respond to the sound inputs by rising and falling but if I take out external mike, green tick goes to internal mike and when I speak only internal mike volume meter respond to sound rising up and down not the external mike.
To resolve the issue I have tried following steps with no luck:
1.I have checked the mikes(internal and external) properties, the both mike shows to be enabled in general tab, in level tab the volume is set to 100 and in advanced tab , all options are selected.
    2. In device manager I have got only one audio driver named as “IDT High definition Audio CODEC”. I have uninstalled the audio driver and reinstalled it using scan for hardware option
    3. Uninstalled the audio driver in device manager and reinstalled the audio driver using recovery manager > advanced option> hardware driver re-installation.
    3. I have updated the BIOS(Insyde F.65, 12/02/2010).
    4. I tried to update the audio driver using below link but things went more worse so I did system restore (not factory setting though).

Sounds like you need to upgrade to the iPhone 5s
    The 5s has Touch ID
You can unlock your phone with your finger instead of typing in a key code
No swiping to unlock either, just touch the home button
You can enrol multiple fingers as well
Here is a video of it in action

Or wait and see what iPhone 6 has to offer
That being said, as desiel vdub posted if the phone is up to your face, the proximity sensor should turn the screen off
And when you lower the phone turn it back on again
Not sure about the phone locking when your on a call doesn't sound right

  • What's the easiest way to add storage to a mac mini. (1TB hard drive but only 32G of real storage). External device, internal or partitioning?

What's the easiest way to add storage to a mac mini. (1TB hard drive but only 32G of real storage). External device, internal or is there some way to partition? I tried doing so but received a message that there wasn't enough free space to partition. Seems like a 1TB drive should have more storage than my Ipad

Its worth confirming what free space you have on your drive:
go to:   Apple Menu > About this Mac >  More Info > Storage
The bar chart shows how much free space there is on the drive:
Please realise that partitioning does not create extra space so this wont help you.
If your free space is less than 20 % you should get extra storage with an external USB or Firewire drive, any make or model will work.

  • Write DVD/CD unit to a G4

Have a Mac G4 running OS 10.4.11 with the play only DVD/CD unit installed still. Can a write DVD/CD or a unit similar to a super drive be installed? Easily that is.

    Hello Jean,
Sure can! I install Superdrives in all the G4s I come across, and it's easy - though the first time it takes a while to figure it out.
First, open the case with a tug at the big ring, and then gaze thoughtfully at your Mac's innards; it always helps to locate all the pieces to your puzzle and get provisionally in your mind what you intend to do.
On a Quicksilver, four Phillips-head screws hold the CD/Zip cage in place in the Mac's case, and four more screws secure the CD/DVD unit to the cage. In case you have to remove the flop-down door and facia plate, there are two hard to locate plastic tabs - look to the left of the CD/Zip cage tucked behind the curled edge of the main computer case. Push gently, but very firmly, to release the tabs.
On the earlier G4s with the charcoal blue cases, it's even easier. Find the two plastic tabs of the facia plate - visible on this model - and push gently to release, wiggling the plate to release it at the other side. Two Phillips screws on the front of the case (formerly covered by the facia plate) will now release the CD/Zip cage.
Next, wiggle the ribbon cable(s) and Molex (four wire) power cable(s) free and withdraw them. Sometimes this takes a good deal of determination, as they can become quite attached to their location. If it becomes necessary, use a pick or small flat blade screwdriver (very carefully) to lever them free of their position, wiggling as you go. Sometimes it helps partially to remove the CD/Zip cage in order to get better purchase of the ribbon and Molex cables.
Once you have the CD/Zip cage free of the Mac you may then unscrew the drive from the cage and push it gently out. The Zip drive if you have one will be an interference fit; it stays put because - when in place - it has nowhere to go.
Replacing is a reversal of the procedure.
I have always used Pioneer brand Superdrives (burn DVDs & CDs) which I have gotten from Newegg or Other World Computing, but I see neither of them carries that particular model anymore. I'm sure Pioneer drives are available elsewhere, but I'm also sure that either establishment would have a comparable drive. Our wonderful G4s are on the way to becoming antiques and orphans (snif!).
Be sure to get a parallel ATA (PATA) drive and not a serial (SATA) one.
You might make sure the jumpers of your new drive are set to master; in my experience they always are, but it doesn't hurt to check.
My first transplant took me an hour, but now I manage it in fifteen minutes with time to spare.
I think that's it. If I've left something out, I'm sure someone will remind me.
    Good luck!
    Jon

  • Apple TV 2, DVD's, and external hard drives

Hello All...Here is what I am trying to accomplish:
1 Burn DVD's to external hard drive
2 Use Apple TV to play DVD's on brand new Panasonic Plasma via the external storage device.
I've got a 3 month old macbook pro running mountain lion, a Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt HD-PATU3 with 1TB of space, apple tv, wireless router, and a Panasonic TC-P50UT50
What I'm looking for is some direction in the best way to get the DVD's onto the hard drive and ultimately play on the TV. I read that an uncompressed DVD takes up about 7GB of space which is too much considering the hundreds of movies I have. So, what is a good software to rip the DVD's to itunes as well as compress the files without losing a lot of quality?
After the compressed files are on the external hard drive am I able to somehow play them using the Apple TV interface?
If not I suppose I could just plug the external hard drive into the side of the TV using the USB 3.0 or HDMI port, but part of the reason I bought the Apple TV was that I thought this was possible.
    Thank you,
    RR

Unfortunately, commercial DVDs that you have bought 99.9% of the time will be copy protected and Apple's forum terms prohibit discussion of circumventing the copy protection.  In various places circumventing digital copy protection is potentially illegal even if you own and intend to keep the DVD.  Hence Apple do not wish DVD rippers etc discussed here.
Another problem is that AppleTv cannot play back DVDs copied to an external drive as it does not understand the format.  So even if you can 'copy' your DVDs you then need to convert to h264 format to play on AppleTV.
Video formats for AppleTv are limited.  They also do not support DVD like menu structures (thogh AppleTV 1 did with itunes Extras movies).
If you have unprotected video you wish to convert eg home video on DVD, then something like Handbrake or MPEGStreamclip with Apple's MPEG2 component might do the job.  These programs are not DVD rippers but can process unprotected MPEG2 video.

I just created a slide show with iPhoto 11 on my MacBook Air.  How do I save this to a DVD on my external drive so that it will play on a DVD player?

    Hi
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • Prob creating ABAP Proxy-Interface use external and interna msg definition

    Hi,
I've created a service interface using external definition (message type for request and response), imported via WSDL file. However, while creating ABAP proxy in SPROXY, it gave the error message "Interface uses external and internal message definition". I searched through the forum, the questions were raised but no definite answer was found. Is it not possible to generate a proxy if there is any external definition used?
    Details of the error message:
    Message no. SPRX122
    Diagnosis
In a message interface you can use messages from different sources:
Message types and fault message types edited in the Enterprise Services Repository
Messages imported into the Enterprise Services Repository (external definitions, RFC, IDoc)
In the current message interface, message types from different sources have been used. Since messages from these different sources must be handled differently during proxy generation, such a mixture of messages within a message interface is not possible.
    System Response
    The interface cannot be generated.
    Procedure
Change the interface definition accordingly in the Enterprise Services Repository.
p/s: My external definition is actually derived from a ABAP FM web service. The reason why i used external definition is that i try to avoid the tedious steps of hard-coding all the data types for the request and response message types.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
    - julius

    Hi Arvind,
For technical reasons, proxy generation and the respective editors in the Integration Builder do not support the entire language range of XML schema and WSDL. For an overview of which language elements are supported, see the Excel spreadsheet in the SAP Service Marketplace at service.sap.com/xi ® Media Library ® Documentation: SAP XI 3.0 (SP11) u2013 Supported XML Schema and WSDL (EN).
I couldnt find the above document in the service market place. Any hint to find it?
    Thanks.

  • HT3986 can bootcamp be used with Windows install disk on an external drive (internal is broken) ?

can bootcamp be used with Windows install disk on an external drive (internal is broken) ?

With Boot Camp, you must install Windows onto in internal HDD (or SSD).  If you are referring that your internal Optical drive is broken, you might be able to install Windows from an external drive, but you might not.  I have heard varying levels of success with that.  I'm not sure what the official stance is, but I do know that if youe machine shipped with an internal optical drive, then you must use that to install Windows using Boot Camp and not swap it out for a "data doubler" and try to install from an external optical drive.
