DVD cleaning

I've burned about 50 dvd's on this machine and now I'm seeing distortions where the pixels seem to deteriorate at certain spots. Does the unit need cleaning? How do I do that?

Hello:
I do not know if it needs cleaning (I have never cleaned mine) but Apple's guidance is here:

  • What kind of cd/dvd cleaner can I use for my Macbook Pro optical drive

Can I buy any kind of cd/dvd cleaner at like best buy, or is there a specialized cleaner made only for Mac drives?
I (like most people) have been having problems with my drive and thought cleaning it might solve the issue.
    Thanks.

I have had issues for months with my MBP not reading some dual-layer DVDs.
After much trepidation I just used a cleaning disc I bought from the supermarket.
Lo and behold! My Mac now reads discs that it would previously spit out or register as blank.

  • Need DVD cleaner recommendation

About half the time I put a CD or DVD into my Macbook Pro (with a Matshita DVD-R UJ-857D), the disk doesn't get recognized, so I have to eject it via Disk Utility and try again. I suspect the drive needs a little cleaning, and I'm hoping to get a recommendation here for the best DVD cleaner. Do I need a special one for MBPs, or would any of the major brands (Memorex, Maxell, JVC, etc.) do?

Any good brand will be OK, the more brushes, and hairs each has, the better.
My preference is the Allsop one as it has 8 brushes.

  • Converting 8mm Reels to DVD; Cleaning Up The Footage...

You guys have been terrific helping me so far so hopefully you can help me with this issue too!
Im going to be converting some old family 8mm reels to DVD by projecting the movies onto a white wall and recording the footage with a video camera. The process looks really good all considered, but I was wandering what the best way was to clean up the color of the footage. Im still new to CS3 so Im willing to bet its an option that is right in front of me but if anyone can help me or recommend a plug-in etc that would help me out I would greatly appreciate it!

I normally start with Levels, then add Highlight & Shadow (turn the auto OFF and do that manually), and the either the Fast Color Corrector, or for more difficult footage the Three-way Color Corrector. Pretty much as Rod suggests.
    Good luck,

  • DVD Cleaner Problem

I've just been trying to backup my Mac Mini to DVD. I've done this every week since I bought the machine. This time, though, the backup fails saying there was an error and it is unable to verify the DVD. It's done this with 4 different discs, so it's not simply a problem disc.
I suspect the lens needs cleaning. I've got a lens cleaner CD but when I loaded this in the drive it mounted, iTunes fired up, but then hung as soon as it tried to play the CD. The CD works fine on my old (tray loading) G4 Mac. So what sort of cleaning disc should I get for a slot loader??
    TIA for your advice,
    Dave Smith

Hi I have a semular problem< my mac mini wont even burn cd s unless i use Verbatim cd-rw discs, it should nt work that way , also if i try to play some pre recorded cds it says there blank , i think i have a hard ware prob. maybe its itunes software

  • Z400 Windows7 Pro 64-bit DVD Clean Install Problem

This is my situation:When I bought my Z400 around a year ago, it had a windows 8 (Trial only) so I clean installed it with Windows 7 32-bit several times already since then. I recently got a Windows7 64 bit installation DVD  from a friend and I discovered that my 32-bit key will work for a 64 bit of the same OS. So I did the usual format (boot from dvd drive) but it's not reading the dvd and instead still boots from the harddrive, even though DVD drive is already 1st on boot sequence. I thought the dvd drive was not working, so I tried booting from my old Windows7 32 bit installation cd. It still boots. So I was thinking this is due to the installer being 64 bit? I tried both Legacy and UEFI options in BIOS out of curiousity but the 64 bit installer is still not being read and it still goes to boot from hard drive. I consider myself just moderately familiar with these technical stuff so I might not have known if there are other things I should have fixed/changed for this to work. Please help. Thanks in advance.

I'll just type the BIOS here from memory since I can't take pics at the moment. BIOS for z400 looks something like this.
    START OF BOOT
Boot Mode - LEGACY or UEFI
Boot Priority - LEGACY or UEFI
    USB - ENABLED or DISABLED
    Boot sequence:
    Hard drive
    DVD drive
another one here I forgot something with PXE if I'm not mistakenEND OF BOOT
So as soon as I changed the Boot Mode to UEFI, both Boot Priority and Boot Sequence disappears. In the former area of Boot Sequence list are 2 EFIs like this:
EFI Network 0 for IPv4 (with code numbers and hyphens here)
EFI Network 0 for IPv6 (with code numbers and hyphens here)
Now I don't know what EFI is, but I selected UEFI and disabled Secure Boot like you said, saved changes, and when it booted, it said like "checking for media...." then after a few seconds, it said something like "EFI Network 0 for IPv4 boot failed".
I apologize I don't know these stuff. I only knew the straightforward clean install and I thought installing 64 bit was the same process as for 32 bit.
I tried pressing F12 to get to boot options (hard drive, dvd drive, etc.) but it also listed the pair of  EFI Network 0 instead of the hard drive, dvd drive, etc. so from how I understood it, the laptop doesn't even attempt to read the dvd drive because of the bios boot settings?

  • Hpe 140f pc shuts down. unable to save important files to dvd. cleaned out dust, no improvement.

My desktop HPE 140f shut down two days ago.  It will start up again (with the safe mode option screen) but shuts down again before I can finish saving important files to DVD.  I recently re-installed Java.  No clue.

Is the CPU cooling fan running?
Try starting it up again and checking to see if the northbridge and southbridge chips are pretty warm.
Try disconnecting the hard disk and then trying a startup. The PC will complain that it can't find a bootable OS, but it should continue to stay on.

  • Cleaning a DVD player

After making a DVD in iDVD I couldn't get the DVD to play without skipping in one of my DVD players. At first I thought it was the DVD but now I think maybe my DVD player might be dirty. If they get dirty. Because the DVDs(6) all player in another DVD player. Does anyone know if I should try to clean the player or just trash it?
    Thanks,
    Sue

I had this very same issue also a while back and I used a quality 3M Scotch CD/DVD cleaner. Maxell also manufactures one. Cost a few dollars but it proved to be worth every cent since it completely resolved the skipping issue I was having at the time. Worked great thereafter. And still running great. Now I simply make sure to clean both the CD and DVD playback lenses at least once every 6 months.
I want to stress that it is vital to use only quality CD and DVD lens cleaners (well known name brands) because the cheaper CD and DVD cleaners tend to fall apart while cleaning the lens and at worst may cause even more issues with the DVD player or DVD Rom one is attempting to restore. Also it is not a good idea to over use these CD/DVD lens cleaners.

  • No longer able to burn DVDs

My Powerbook is suddenly refusing to burn DVDs. I have spent the past couple of days testing with a variety of brands including Verbatim, but I get the error message 'Communication to the disc drive failed error code 0x80020022'. I can play DVDs and burn CDs as normal.
Does this mean that there is some sort of hardware error (I have tried cleaning the lasers with a DVD cleaner?) and I will no longer be able to burn DVDs? If this is the case what are my options? Is it possible to replace the Powerbook's superdrive, and if so is this expensive/complicated? Alternatively can anyone recommend an external DVD burner?
    Thanks for your help

    Hi Dave,
I'm not sure about your tech issue...
However I can recommend some good external DVD burners
    LaCie is good (expensive)
LG - a friend has one and works very well
NEC - identical to LaCie but cheaper- if you do a search you will see that LaCie uses NEC drives in its products. You need to buy an external enclosure.
I recommend the NEC I've had one for over 2 years and still works flawlessly.
You should also consider (if you go with NEC) to buy an enclosure that has FireWire and USB 2

  • Not able to read DVD in the optical drive, but able to read CD

So lately, my MBP's optical drive have been acting up weirdly when I put in a DVD disk. It would suck it in, and I would hear the sound that it tries to put the read head on the disk but failing. After a while it just spit the disk out. This would only happen if I put in a DVD disk, when I put in a music CD, it works and load the music into iTunes and everything.
    Does anyone know what's wrong?

THis almost invariably means your drive needs cleaning or that you are using bad media xcc. DVD's are harder to "read" and "write" than CD's and generally show "dirty lens" problems well before issues arise with CDs.
Get a DVD cleaning disc and run it through a few times.
    Cheers

  • The DVD drive fails to read some disks

Audio disks and program disks that read OK on my other Macs may fail to read on this one, yet this one recognizes most disks with no trouble.
I'll buy a few new music disks and two will be fine while the 3rd isn't recognized. I put the unregognized one in my PowerBook and it's 100% OK there.
This MacBook Pro is not an over-used drive. 20 to 30 disks over its lifetime.
Is there a cleaning disk made for laptops? The cleaners I've seen say not for laptops.
    Appreciate any advice.

No I haven't. Nor have I ever used any CD/DVD cleaning discs of any type on any drive. If I have a CD/DVD drive fail to work properly I just replace it. For the cost of most it is not worth my time to bother trying to clean an already faulty drive.
IMHO the drives used by Apple are anything But Super, as the name would imply.
The only reason I could see that any normal drive cleaning disk would not work in a Notebook Tray drive, and especially in any Slot loading drive, is if it was one of those Mini discs that are much smaller in diameter then a standard CD/DVD disc. Those will get stuck inside a slot loading drive. Not sure what the problem would be with them in a Slimline Tray loading notebook drive. Maybe because the head is already so close to the disc?
I was going by many other posts I have seen on this forum about using one of these cleaning discs.
Sorry if I mislead you in any way. That was not my intension. That is why I stated "In the end you may have to replace the drive or get an external".
    Good Luck and Best Wishes.

  • IMac not reading Cd's...but DVD's ok.

I realize this is not new. I have been reading as many posts as I can, w/many people listing thru iTunes. I have tried, & so has everyone else that I have read, just about everything.
Maybe it is just me. But I am not sure it has to do w/iTunes as much as possibly OS X Lion update? My iMace read & played CD's just fine before I decided to update to Lion. DVD's were not a problem & still not.  However, I had to, unhappily, purchase Snow Leopard (if my memory serves me right, which it usually does a left, due to being blessed w/ADHD...), before I could upgrade to Lion...talk about a rip...but I'm not even going to waste anytime on that one b/c it's done & over with.  However, the only reason i bring it up is b/c I don't know if there was a problem w/Snow Leopard before installing Lion, b/c I didn't bother using Snow to play CD's, or anything for that matter (just some food for thought as this just popped in my head...anybody wonder why we had to purchase a CD for Snow Leopard, but then download Lion...? Maybe there was/is an issue concerning CD's betwixt the two? Maybe somebody already looked into this. I don't know as I am new to this forum stuff, & being 57 yrs young I don't see myself going on them too often except on an as needed basis.)  Anyways, I digress, which happens often despite my meds.
Bottom line is, there was no problem before the Lion upgrade. And I just noticed the CD problem now b/c I finally found a copy of Arthur Fiedler's Boston Pops Orchestra's Christmas music, which I grew up listening to.  And so as I put my shiny used (courtesy of Goodwill...now before you go making any assumptions...and you know what assumptions do...I have also since that failure, tried brand new store-bought CD's as well, & nada...same thing:
    ***"whirl-spin-clickity-clack-wind-down-silence...whirl-spin-clickity-clack-wind -down-silence...whirl-spin-clickity-clack-wind-down-silence...spit out CD-no questions-asked"***
not even an error dialog box like saying invalid disc or something.
Now, come to think of it, since the update, I have had some DVD issues as well.  All of a sudden it would, after playing some movies, maybe 3 or 4, it would all of a sudden say, when I would put in the next unsuspecting victim, some sort of an invalid error...imagine that, calling my CD's invalids.  Why, they've never been on crutches or in wheelchairs before in their little eternal lives which just happens to remarkably resemble the international sign of the donut!  Anyways, I just happened to try rebooting my pooter & voila, thar she blows!  Alas, my DVD's play again.  This problem has been happening at the rate of about every 3-4, maybe 5 movies at a time.  Now this has all been since the upgrade.  I cannot tell you if there has been an upDATE on Lion, or if iTunes was updated/upgraded same time as Lion...that data is far too improtant for me to be interested enough to hyperfocus on.  I can only focus on the strange, off the wall situations that are meaningless & irrelevant.  Not only that skipper, but they don't make any sense either!  Having said all this, maybe someone can piece something together to figure out what's going on.  Obviously there is a lot of people having the same problems since one of the upgrade/updates.  I think it would be safe to say, though not 100%, that it is either the Lion or the jam (as in iTunes)...or quite possibly even Snow Leopard,  But that's all I know.  And what about the conspiracy issue...why did Apple go w/the download for Lion, after having to buy Snow Leopard on disc?  Maybe something happened & they just chose to ignore it, hoping it wouldn't show.  Well, I've done my damage for one morning.  If anyone has any other suggestions, ideas, or actual fixes on this CD problem, I would be very grateful, & so would many others.  Of course, since I am so very much Mr. Johnny on the oil spot that this issue may have already been acknowledged by the Big Bite itself.  Or maybe something in the upgrade/update blew out the CD portion of the softwar that runs rhe hardware, right?
Appreciate any feedback for the old newbie here...well what do you know..i'm whatcha call an oxymoron...YAHOO! MT DEW! IT'S GOOOD! (Old commercial from the 70's if memory serves me right...or left (as in it left the building before I did!)(Actually I don't even drink the stuff b/c the caffiene puts me to sleep, or the sugar...or (d) both! :-)  )
    Respectfully yours, doug

Well, I bought a CD/DVD cleaner kit, and nothing happened--it didn't even recognize that the cleaner disc was in there and it didn't do anything.
I checked for an optical drive update, but the only one I found was for older Macs for 4X DVDs, which had nothing to do with CDs. Since even music discs won't mount, nor will discs that mount on every other Mac in the house, Macs both older and newer than my G5 and discs both older and newer, I suspect my drive is toast. Dang.

  • How to replace a DVD drive on G4

I have a G4 running OSX 10.4.9 purchased in 2003 with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105. It has not mounted for some time now, any discs either CD or DVD are not seen by the system. The hardware profile knows it is there (hence how I know what type it is) but neither Finder or iTunes recognizes anything put into the drive. Neither complains, they just don't acknowledge any discs entered.
I've tried a DVD cleaner just to rule out a dirty lens so I assume I'll simply have to replace the drive.
I've added a PCI USB2 card and extra hard drives so I'm not at all uncomfortable with replacing it myself. However I don't know how to remove the drive. It is encased in metal box (carrier?) with the power cord entering into the case in the back. I only see a couple of screws that don't seem to be the only thing holding the case on.
Can anyone direct me to instructions on how to remove the drive?
    TIA

    Hi
Installation intructions, including a QuickTime movie in most cases, can be found here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/diy/
You'll need to select your exact G4 model in the drop down list box.
If you're unsure of which model it is, the following articles should help:

If it was purchased new in 2003 it's probably a FW800 or MDD 2003.

    You can try
    • High quality brand of DVD - I use Verbatim DVD-R
    • SET down burn speed to x4 = less burn errors = Plays on more Players
    • Use a DVD cleaning disk - now and then in burner and player
