Dvd clip

how do i import a clip from a dvd into imovie?

in addition to Bengt's post (Handbrake isn't legal everywhere), your other options are:
* DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
* Apple mpeg2 plugin (20$) + Streamclip (free)
* Cinematize >60$
* Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
* Toast6/7 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
* connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
non of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • How to copy 5 minhome video DVD clip on to Macbook Pro than make a DVD cop

    ???
Can not figure out how do take the DVD R which plays fine and load to my macbook pro hard drive...(computer is brand new) than want to make copies of the clip on blank DVDs with no editing... just a straight copy.
    Thanks

    knbcpab,
Is this a mini DVD-R, burned directly in a camcorder? If it is, Do Not Attempt To Put It In Your Macbook Pro's Optical Drive!!!.
Mini disks cannot be read by your Superdrive, and they will get stuck in it, perhaps damaging it in the process. Apple will not cover any such damage.
Disk Utility will image, then produce as many copies as you like. But, doing so with a mini disk will require that you use an external, tray-loading drive capable of handling the mini disk. Of course, you can use your Superdrive as long as the disk is full-sized. With the disk mounted, select it in Disk Utility and click the "New Image" icon in the Toolbar. You need to create a "DVD/CD Master" image.

  • Importing DVD clips.

First let me get this out of the way. I work at a university and have, through our library, received rights to show commercial films in class (not an exhaustive list, but enough to do the job). For a few years now I've been showing the films and in later classes I would attempt to show small clips for discussion purposes. As a new apple owner I can see how this can be made so much easier. Especially if I were to compile clips in imovie and then export it into a keynote presentation.
But I just can't figure out how to get these films onto my mac. I do understand that, under any other circumstance, this would fall under copyright infringement. But, as mentioned earlier, I already do have permissions to show these films in class.
Any suggestions? I just want to import a commercial dvd into the mac, convert a clip or two into quicktime, stitch them in imovie and finally bring them into a keynote presentation.
Possible? Or is this beyond the capabilities of the mac?
    Thanks in advance.

    this is a two-step process...:
any advice for getting rid /'override' copy protection/DRM measurements is against ToU on this board..
    step 2..
.,.. the usual advice for conversion of DVDs (which IS allowed) is as follows:
DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    VisualHub (23.32$)
    Drop2DV (free)
    Cinematize >60$
    Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • Seeking Software to Capture/Edit DVD Clips

(Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum for this question. If so, a gentle nudge to the correct one would be appreciated.)
I teach film/literature, and I'd like to be able to put together presentations of film clips from DVDs, with my voiceover, for teaching purposes.
For example: I'd like to be able to show clips continuously of three different Hamlets (Gibson, Branagh, Tennant) doing the same monologue. I'd then like to add my voiceover to that montage.
So my question: *What software allows me to do this?*

Step 1 - convert your DVD video to a format that can be edited. To do this you should download MPEG Streamclip (free) and purchase the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. Then you can use MPEG Streamclip to convert DVD videos to formats that iMovie and Final Cut Express (or Pro) can edit. (Note: if the DVD's are copy protected you may not be able to convert them.)
Step 2 - import the converted video clips into iMovie or Final Cut. Assemble them however you wish them to display. Add your voiceover.
Step 3 - export your completed video from iMovie or FCE. Probably to QuickTime if you want to show from your Mac; or burn a DVD if you want a playable DVD.

  • DVD clip to FCP

I have a DVD that I will need to take a clip of to add to FCP - How can I do that?

You can do that by starting to search in this forum.
You probably didn't do this, else you would've read this post:

    and many others.
Sorry to be sarcastic, but searching the forum really is the first step.

  • Imported DVD clips using dropDV - problems with freezing

I bought a copy of DropDV so i could make FCP-importable mpeg files from some dvd's i made.
Problem is, when i drag any of these files into my source window in FCP, the clip will play for a few seconds then freeze. if i mark an in and out and move it into my sequence timeline it plays fine - but i can't watch them in the source monitor (the sound continues after it freezes).
I have 2gb RAM and i even went into the system preferences of FCP (4.5) and boosted the numbers there but it's still not working - the g5 we have at work does not have this problem.
not sure how many people here use dropDV with FCP, but if anyone has any suggestions i'd appreciate it!
    thanks

    it's a 2gb video clip file, if that makes a difference.<<</div>
hmmmmm. 2gb is the size file limit for drives formatted as FAT32 and since I don't believe in coincidences, that makes me suspicious. It might be nothing, but you may want to verify that the drive that the clip is stored on is formatted as "Mac OS Extended."

  • Playing DVD clips with Keynote

    Greetings,
I'm trying to figure out a way to have movie clips play from within Keynote '08 without having to leave and use an outside program like DVD Player. Is this possible? Thanks.

Hi. I have been putting together a KN presentation with quite a few movie clips (see my other current posts). My process is to use QTPro to make a selection and save that to a folder (called Movie Edits) in .mov format.
Putting them into KN is simple: you can just drag them into a place holder on any slide as you would an image file. The issue I am experimenting with at the moment is whether to have all the movies embedded in the KN file or to leave them all 'outside'. Be warned: you have to make this decision right at the start of creating your presentation. Create a new presentation and do "save as..." with with relevant box unchecked. Once you've started saving the project with movies embedded, you can't get them out and your KN document may bloat unacceptably.
The advantage of leaving them outside is you get a smaller KN file which is quicker on Open and Saves. The disadvantage is that the presentation is stuck on your computer and you can't move the movie edit files around or rename them. On the other hand you can always do another 'Save as...' when the project is complete and this time elect to embed all media files.

  • Using Standard DVD clips in a Blue Ray production

    A few questions -
Are there any tricks if I had a full HD project and I wanted to inset a few scenes from a standard DVD into this?
Also  I have a number of DVDs I made with a good quality DVtape camera some  years ago and wondered if there would be any benefit converting them to  Blue Ray?  The old DVDs look noticably better played on my Blue Ray  player (HDMI 1900x1080) than on my old standard DVD player (component  video) so it may be a matter of whether PRE's upscaling would be better  than that of the player?
I still have the old source DV  tapes so would be any better again to make a new HD project using this  SD video and burn it to blue ray upscaled?
Or is there other software that will do this better?

    What Steve said.
The only viable option for using SD (Standard Def) material in an HD (High Def) Project is to use a program to up-rez the SD DVD-quality, prior to Import.
One such program, that gets good reviews, is Red Giant's Magic Bullet Instant HD, which is a plug-in for PrPro, but at the last time that I checked, was NOT available for PrE. I have not heard of anyone finding a way to use it, in PrE, but perhaps someone has.
There are other similar programs, and if one found a good one, that was either a stand-alone, or that worked from within PrE, that might be a good option.
Also, as Steve says, playing a DVD on a good, up-rezzing BD player, will improve it, and by an astounding amount, in my estimation. The up-rezzing players have specialized chips for the up-rezzing process, and they can work very well.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • I cant get HD DVD clip with a simple Ps menu

    Hello all,
Encore is driving me nuts. am trying to get an HD quality movie. I have 4GB of RAM.
In Encore, I only have one menu with a video background created in AE. The menu is imported from Photoshop, supposed to be HD at 1920 x 1080. It looks fine in Encore resolution wise. Then when I export to DVD folder, the quality is horrible. I clicked edit menu in Photoshop, then made the menu twice as big, Encore recognizes the changes and the resolution is further enhanced in the menu, but the DVD export yields the same results, and identical file size no matter what the res. of the menu is. I went up to 7680 x 4320...same story. I changed the pixel aspect ratio from square to 1.333, didnt do a thing, I changed the projects settings bit rate from 8 to 9.4...same thing. Please help.
    Thanks
    Raffi

Hello Ruud, thanks for your reply.
It is a DVD project indeed, but I am a little lost when it comes to HD vs SD. I am given no option to select any when creating a DVD, I think they are only available for Blu-ray?
One more note, when I export to blu-ray, the resolution is much better, am using 1920 width. The problem is I dont have a blue-ray burner, so I burn to a blu-ray folder. Encore creates loads of sub folders inside the main one. The only files I can play are inside a folder called Stream and they have a .m2ts extension. When I play any of those, the buttons wont work. Any suggestions?

  • PE7 won't recognise my DVD camera to capture clips

I have captured my DVD clips in the past via Premier Elements 7 (PE7) without any problem.  However, right now, when I want to capture my clips and I go into Organize, Get Media, and click on DVD (Camcorder or PC DVD Drive) under the Source, my DVD Camera is not listed.  It does not seem to recognise that my DVD Camcorder is connected.  Yet, when I connect my DVD to the computer  Windows ‘DVD Digital Device’ panel comes up and asks me if I want to capture videos using Windows Movie Maker, Nero Vision Essential or ‘Edit Record Video using Adobe Premier Elopements’.
I have captured some clips using Windows Media Maker (WMM), so the computer seems to recognise the device and the camcorder is functioning.  It would seem however, that WMM does not record the split clips in the folder but records it as one clip, although when you go into WMM you can edit clip by clip.  But I want to use PE7 for editing and because of the size of my files, it is essential that the clips be split as they were recorded.
I have reinstalled the original PE7 Disk to ‘repair’ the program without any success.  Has anyone got any suggestion as to what I might do next to capture my clips via PE7?
    Tom

Sorry about the confusion I caused but your answers clarified my mistake. I incorrectly used DVD instead of DV settings.  Of course with DV Setting it is working!!
Thanks you all for your responses.
    Kind regards

  • Possible to take clips off of a DVD?

    Hi-
We have purchased the rights to a DVD that has 4 short clips on it.  I would like to incorporate those clips into an on-line training program.  I can see how to incorporate them if they were in a Flash file format.  When I try and grab the files this way, the folder is empty, which tell me they are not in Flash format.  The file format is as listed below.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might be able to get this to work?  I am not very tech savvy, but I know enough to be dangerous.
    Thanks!
    Michelle

What you probably need is something to convert the DVD clips into something that Flash can use.  There are lots of free programs online that will let you "rip" the DVD and convert the video to a common format like AVI or MPG.  At that point you can import it into Flash to make a Flash movie file.  I think you'll need Flash to do it, though.  I don't think you can bring it directly into Captivate.  I'm sure someone will correct me if that's wrong.

  • Importing Sony DVDirect Video on DVD into FCE

    Hello...good wishes,
I've been recording video from a Canon XL2 directly to DVD using a Sony VRD-VC20 DVDirect DVD Burner. When I try to import this video material into Final Cut Express, FCE does not recognize the format.
Apple Support says that the XL2 Camcorder is a supported device in FCE, but is not able to be conclusive regarding video recorded to DVD using the Sony DVDirect Burner.
The only way I've found to get any of this video into FCE is to play the DVD's in a standard DVD player' record the video back onto DV tape, and import them through the XL2. This is a daunting, funky proposition given the hours and hours of video I need to edit - and I worry about degradation of quality using this process.
Are there any third party drivers written out there or do any of you have ideas how I can get this video from DVD to FCE?
    Thanks~

I use a Sony VRD-VC20 to burn Tivo recordings and VHS tapes to DVD. I just picked up a program called Cinematize2. It's a DVD clip extractor that retails for about $50 US. It allows you to set an in and out point on a DVD and extract the clip into a format compatible with FCP/FCE. Previously I used MPEG Streamclip 1.3.1 which allows you to export mpeg2 files to Quicktime, AVI, or DV format for use in FCP/FCE. Mpeg Streamclip also allows you to set in and out points before exporting. The link to download MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 is: http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html.
In order to use the MPEG2 playback and converter feature you will also need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component. You can buy it from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2) for about $30 US. If you have either Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro, then the component is already installed and you don't have to buy it; but you may need to download the latest version from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/download).

  • Sequence Settings for .mov clips from MPEG Streamclip

I'm converting some DVD clips (from old DVDs I created) that I exported to QT using MPEG Streamclip.
When I put them in the timeline sequence, I have to render everything.
Can I change the sequence settings to avoid this? And can I change the settings of a sequence that already has clips in it?
    Thanks.

I set MPEG Streamclip QT Export to:

    Frame Size 720X480 (DV-NTSC)
    Quality 100%

Frame size 720X480 NTSC DV (3:2)
    Compressor DV DVCPRO - NTSC
    http://i44.tinypic.com/of3h8h.png
I still need to render. And the aspect ration looks squished in a bit. Like I've set something wrong.
What am I doing wrong? How should I change the settings:

  • Screen Recordings from the DVD Drive No Longer Permitted

I am a literature professor who teaches books that are often adapted into film. When I give lectures on those books, I like to include short snippets of clips of those films from DVDs to help my students visualize the material, and I do that by doing a screen recording (via screenflow) of the DVD clip I want to teach, so I can drop the film clip into the keynote without breaking stride. Also, I teach from a room without a DVD player and via a macbook air (no dvd player), so carrying around the DVD, stopping the lecture, switching the A/V, priming the DVD, hunting for the 30 second clip, and returning to the Keynote lecture is just not something I want -- or am able -- to do.  But the new update of the mac software -- I have OSX 10.9 -- greys out the media box when I hit "play" on the DVD player and "record" on screenflow, making it impossible to make a screen recording of the film.  I researched screenflow and it said the problem is not with their program but with the newest Apple Update. They have no control over the greyed out box.  The only problem is that I own the screen recording software (which I paid for just for this purpose), the DVD I'm recording, AND I'm only using it in an educational setting AND I'm only using clips no longer than a couple of minutes, which I also cite from the original source so students can find the whole thing if they want. Apple should not be greying out this option for me. I'm completely in my rights. Has anyone had this problem and does anyone know a way around it?

    I'm completely in my rights
    Not exactly.
