Forty-TwoDVD-VXPlus ($$) is one alternative. However, this application requires you to rip your DVDs before thay can be converted (unlike HandBrake) by a progam like MacTheRipper.

Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:

The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion and Mavericks even though they have it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

HDV to DVD conversion

I've read a great deal of discusson on this site regarding HDV to DVD conversion and how to get the best possible results. There seem to be about a half a dozen marginal solutions but in my opinion and experience no real perfect definitive solution.
This is in the way of a suggestion/plea/request to Apple, to those who run this forum, and to those experts there who deal with Final Cut pro and HDV editing: Could someone please create a definitive expert professional manual/post/procedure on how to do this very straightforward conversion from HDV to DVD with the BEST possible industry quality results.

Seriously, open the phonebook, start asking who can take a HDV master on miniDV tape, and hand you back a DVD in a day or two, it may be cheaper than buying pro encoder software, and your time to learn how to use it effectively. You should have budget for this, promos / trailer work should be included. Your time costs money. It will also put you in a better position to know what to ask for when the project is finished.
Using the camera down convert is good enough. DVD from DV is fast to make. If you are just previewing it, S-VHS is also good enough, and very quick and simple to produce - don't rule out lower tech, or lower quality options, they will still tell the same story.
In answer to your question, (do you really want to know ?), the colour space of the NTSC DV in camera down conversion is 4:1:1, the colour space of MPEG video is 4:2:0 (search for those terms, until you hit a page with diagrams of boxes), the differences in these structures results in a worst of both colour encoding - if you are shooting PAL, then the story is different, as PAL DV is also 4:2:0, and probably not significantly different from the DV50 method, once its on DVD.
DV50 is 4:2:2, HDV is 4:2:0, but at a higher resolution. When downscaled, I estimate SD from HDV is around 4:2:2 or maybe even 4:4:4, by going via DV50 to DVD you deliver the most DVD's can represent, rather than with NTSC DV where you deliver half the colour space DVDs can show. BUT the in camera down convert is REALTIME, consider the benefit of that before taking the slower route.
Is the DV50 the best SD down convert ? I don't know. It certainly looks very clear, shows no, or little signs of the DV50 codec adding artefacts over the original HDV footage, and produces more quality than the MPEG encoder can represent once on DVD, or at least, the MPEG encoder I have access to. I cannot say the same of the in camera convert. I also played with uncompressed codecs, and the None compression codec, they require huge amounts of disk space, and didn't look better than the DV50 method. However, I didn't test them with your footage.
I suggest a 1 minute 'bake off' between the methods, using your own footage, to see just how much quality you are willing to accept. You may find the in-camera is good enough, and a darn sight easier and faster.
Hope this helps - search around more, trawl through some older threads, or, just pick up the phone and call a post house to make it all go away! By the time you have figured out what works best for you, they would have finished and be on to the next job.

If you mean a commercial DVD you have bought, then you can't. They are usually copy protected and removing the protection is illegal in most countries, so we cannot help you do that.
If it is a personal DVD that you own the copyright on, then you can convert it to iPad format using Handbrake. Handbrake will not convert copy protected, commercial DVDs.

DVD player crashes Mac

Trying to play a DVD on my Mac causes it to freeze/crash. Dock is unresponsive can't cmd + Q or even force quit. I can move my cursor around the screen, but nothing is click-able. No spinning coloured wheel either. Have to hold power off and restart. First time my Mac has actually crashed...
Happened three times
1) started full screen crashed after a few seconds
2) started in windowed mode crashed when i tried to resize said window.
3) was playing fine for four minutes then froze as described above
Why is this? The DVD is brand new, and clean of any scratches or dirt.

I'm also having the exact same problem. For me the time to freeze varies and it's only after I start playing the DVD. Navigating through the DVD menus seems to work OK, I only have trouble when playing content.
It typically freezes within about 5 or 10 seconds but can go a little longer. The sound continues for a few seconds after the video has stopped, but after that I have to hold the power button to force a restart.
It doesn't matter if I'm using DVD Player or Front Row. I have noticed that the screen briefly (VERY briefly) flickers once every few seconds when it's frozen. This seems to be independent of whether the player is in fullscreen or windowed mode.
I've found that it only affects me on a couple of music DVDs as well; I think this is because these ones are multi-region. DVDs encoded for a single region seem to play just fine (as long as they match the drive's region setting, of course!).
I have definitely played one of these music DVDs before but I don't remember when so it may or may not have been before I upgraded to Snow Leopard. I see that the 10.6.1 update included a fix for DVD playback... maybe that fix broke something else?

Blue Ray Disk drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro

Ok, I'll make this an official question, where might I find info on BDR drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro, etc? I'm a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be much info available.
I can always use my Pioneer BDR-202 with a windows box, I have several, but I'm trying to get AWAY from them.

Blu-ray offers a level of interacivity that is not possible with DVDs, so it isn't just an different drive that you are getting with Blu-ray. Seeing how Apple didn't upgrade DVD SP with the new FCP Suite 2, it is reasonable to assume they are working on a separate Blu-Ray Studio Pro, that is going to be completely different than DVD SP. Adobe Encore's support for Blu-Ray is extremely buggy, so obviously moving from DVD programming to Blu-Ray programming isn't just a simple tweak to the code.
Apple doesn't pre-announce software they are working on so this is all guess work, but it is reasonable to assume that they are working on a Blu-Ray programming application. Be patient. Do you really have the money to burn on the bleeding edge of new technology? A single Blu-Ray burnable disc sells for $20. Two months ago the exact same disc sold for $45. Prices will continue to fall as things stablize.

I want to use my DVD drive on my mac to play back movies through my apple tv2. I notice that on my iPad, iPhone, iTunes on my computer all have the AirPlay option to display the video on my TV through Apple TV. I do not want to burn my DVD onto my Mac and play through iTunes becasue its a hassle.

Logical but it won't work - DVD player output will be a grey checkerboard pattern.
Apple apps prevent Airplay of DVD content at low level presumably for some copy protection reason.

Best mini-dvd recorder for Mac?

Hello,
I have a Sony mini-dv recorder that uses mini tapes. I would like to purchase a new digital recorder that uses mini DVD's so I don't have to transfer from tape and can just pop the mini dvd into the mac dvd reader. Is this possible? I have a friend who tried with a Sony with no luck. what is the best brand compatible with Macs?

MiniDVDs and MiniDiscs have little or no support on the Mac platform. Best to steer clear of any device that uses them if your sole working platform is a Mac.
Keep in mind that any device that records to a DVD, such as a MiniDVD recorder, is compressing the content far more than if you just captured your footage on tape. The content is already being formatted for playback on a DVD player as you record it, thus it's like skipping the whole editing/formatting process altogether. In theory, all you have to do is plop the disc into a set-top DVD player and hit play.

Home DVD movies to MAC

I have many home movies I created on my PC and burned to DVD. I would like to 1) transfer from DVD to my MAC for back-up and re-editting. 2) send to iphone via QT X. I purchased the mpg-2 add on and was able to transfer a movie but there was no sound (multiplexed file). I loved the switch to MAC and all my new home videos are great. The problem is working with the old home movie DVDs that I created with Pinnacle Studio on PC. Anyone know the most painless way to do this?

For converting digital video to mp4, for iPhone - i use iSquint.
It can probs be done on OS X's own apps, but it'd probs take twice as long!
