DVD creation

I burned a .mov file to a DVD, It works fine on the computer, but won't play in a DVD player. What am I doing wrong?

You made a "data" DVD and it will only work on a computer.
Use iDVD to make your QuickTime file into something that will play on a DVD player and playback on a TV.

  • What is the best program for editing and DVD creation?

I am looking for a software that allows me to create a DVD with menus, etc.   I would prerfer to edit in iMovie and export my video to a DVD software.  But if anyone knows of a better editing system with DVD creation possibilities please let me know!

Better is a very subjective term when it comes to editing and personal preferences play an important role. In any case on the Mac you have these choices:
    • Buy iLife with iMovie and iDVD (Amazon, Ebay). This should be able to fulfill most needs.
    • Get Adobe CS 6 with Premiere Pro and Encore DVD. Professional software with a learning curve if you come from iMovie
    • Get Final Cut Pro X. Shouldn't be too difficult to learn for iMovie users but with very limited DVD authoring
Both have trial versions that you can check out. The cost for FCP X is much lower than that for CS 6.
On a side note, there is also Avid but I can't really say much about it having never used it.

  • FCPX DVD export to Compressor: error burning disc; video file incompatible for DVD creation

I've been working on a project for months now (feature film) in Final Cut Pro X. Therefor I have done about 20 exports already from within FCPX to Compressor for DVD. Did the same process last night as always.
From within project timeline I go to SHARE -> DVD -> setup a basic menu then select USING COMPRESSOR
Compressor opens. I click submit and after the progress indicator fills up way too fast, I get this error:
"there was an error burning your disc the video file is incompatible for DVD creation"
DVD spits out and that's it. Compressor and FCPX are both still running and haven't crashed but I'm confused. I have burned since the recent 10.0.3 upgrades (and whichever upgrade just came out for Compressor as well) so I can't imagine it's the upgrade.
    Any ideas?
I tried making a duplicate of the project and renaming and exporting and had the same results.
At this moment I am trying to export to DVD directly from FCPX with default settings and it has bee "processing" with no movemtn on the progress bar for an hour (it's a 2 hour video so this may not be abnormal).

  • IDVD can't process audio - freezes DVD creation

I have created alot of DVDs before with iDVD, but now, during the DVD creation process, it freezes during the 'Processing Audio' stage and won't go onto the burn stage
Any ideas what is happening here?
    Thanks very much
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2 Gig Ram

t freezes during the 'Processing Audio' stage
1st just try waiting. iDVD can appear to hang (spinning beachball) at "audio encoding" but if you wait long enough everything finishes fine. With a MacBook Pro - I think 30 minutes should do it, but wait a few hours just to be sure.
If that still doesn't work make sure you have 16 bit audio, and look back here and search for "audio encoding hang."
Use "Save as Disk Image" to avoid making coasters, and to test your encoded DVD before buring with the Apple DVD player.

  • "Nothing Captured--Aborting OneStep DVD Creation"

I'm trying to use iDVD 6's OneStep DVD to convert Digital 8 tapes from a Sony camcorder directly to DVD. Sometimes this works flawlessly and other times I get the message that nothing was captured on the tape (although the tapes work fine) and that the process has been aborted. I can't understand the randomness of this error. Thanks for your help. mark

    Digital 8 tapes
Are you 100% sure that all the tapes are Digital 8 (DV)? Your camcorder will read Hi8 and 8mm analog tapes, and even convert them to "DV" for import into iMovie, but iDVD OneStep won't read in tapes being converted on the fly.
The other possibility is large breaks in the timecode.
Finally, I'm not a OneStep fan. Try iMovie's MagicMovie and then iDVDs Magic DVD for a two step process. At least if you have problems, you know where to start to find answers....

  • Color and contrast different from Premiere Pro 2 DVD creation

I found after creating DVD's via Premiere Pro 2 are more saturated and more neutral in color vs encoding through Encore.
I made a si8de by side test, converted them back to AVI and grabbed the same still of each. The Encore still was lower in contrast (flatter) and a slight bit warmer. over all the DVD compression from PP2 gives a richer look. If you are a film maker or photographer this matters a lot, but not for most users.
the file sizes from premiere are bigger. for example a 8mbs from a 7:30 avi compression on premiere resulted in 544mb while a 9.4 compression via encore 2 resulted in 464 mb. when changing the mbs from 8-9.4 mbs it resulted in exactly the same size file 464mb. even when starting a new project, which means that there might be a bug and encoding on a unknown predetermined mbs, probably 7. This would explain the flatter look of the Encore 2 compression.
Does anyone know how to find out at what rate a dvd has been encoded after it's done? knowing that there isn't any difference in the file size between 8mbs and 9.4 mbs shows that there must be a problem.
This test was done with the Encore DVD 2 trial version. I have vs 1.51 as well and will make a test on this one as well. to see if there is the same problem.

    1. Can you detail your exact method, step-by-step, for both Premiere and Encore?
encode encoded in premiere 2 at the highest level 9mbs (didn't chapter for a simple auto disk, this is disabled in pp2 but you can save as an mpg2 and import for chaptering in Encore2)
    2. Did you use the exact same source files for all tests, or just files that were the same duration?
Exactly the same source file, when importing the mpg2 into premiere i simply imported each file in the timelime and saved exactly the frame of each mpg2. All this started when i first compared 2 encodings from a film directors reel where quality is crucial, and saw it immidiatly when playing the 2 different dvd's of the same reel on a DVD player (JVC) and Sony monitor.
    3. Be sure to include project settings and program preferences for both applications.
encore 2 encoded at cbr 1x 9mbps (highest)
Premiere 2 encoded at cbr 1x 8mbps (highest)
when setting to 9mbps in PP2 I get the3 following warning:
Total Video and audio bitrate (10.536 Mbs) exceeds maximum allowable bitrate (10.030 Mbps) for DVD type of muxing.
So i reduced the bitrate to 8 and still got a file of 557mb and better color and contrast than Encore2.
The final results of encoding in PP2 gives an identical DVD mpg as far as color and contrast to the original AVI.
When encoding at the max rate of 9 in PP1.5 i never got this warning.
I just repeated the above test on more time in PP2 and Encore DVD 2
they must use a different codec for Encore2 than PP2.
Besides the color and gamma shift the image size horizontally is a slight bit different (larger) than the one done with PP2, but not verically.
you can also encode in PP2 save it as a multiplexed mpg2 file and than chapter it for the final dvd in encore2 which gives you the higher quality results of PP2.

  • Best application for Standard Def DVD creation?

I have a bunch of MiniDV tapes shot in standard def that I want to make into DVDs for my family. I want to preserve as much picture quality as possible during the process and will be using transitions, overlays, and credits.
I have used iMovie 08 and abandoned it because I needed dynamic chapter markers. I am now ready to edit the next DVD in the 'series', and with the advent of iMovie 09 and the availability of Final Cut Express at a reasonable price, I am trying to decide which way to go. I also have a copy of iMovie HD 6 which I used for my previous DVD.
From reading the reviews of iMovie 09 I am pretty confident that I would be happy with it functionally, but not if it costs me in picture quality. I noticed on my first effort using iMovie HD 6 and iDVD, that the DVD picture was not as sharp as the video viewed directly from the camera. Did I do something wrong, or is that a "feature" of iMovie? Would FCE be better?
My only concern with FCE apart from spending money that I may not need to spend, is the talk of a steep learning curve. With two little kids at home I don't have a lot of spare time. That said, I'd rather spend the time and get a sharp looking DVD than get a mediocre one quickly.
    Thanks for any advice.

    skalicki` wrote:
What do you mean by "dynamic chapter markers"?
I meant the ability to define the precise location of the chapter within the movie, such that when exported to iDVD the menu allows you to jump to any point you have defined in the movie. By "dynamic" I mean they may be placed at random locations, rather than fixed intervals. iMovie 08 deleted the ability to add chapter markers, iDVD allows only fixed interval chapters (which seems useless to me), as does Toast. I tried the work-around of using Garage Band, but it fails on larger projects. I've read that iMovie 09 has restored the ability to add chapter markers where you want, but if I'm going to shell out more cash I might as well get the package that will get me the best picture too (within reason).
In any video application, for Chapter markers you simply place them in the application, then edit them in iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, etc.
Not in iMovie 08/iDVD, but now that you mention it, how does DVD Studio Pro compare to iDVD? I'm mostly focused on picture quality.
Do you mean better animated titles that you could use within the program? For this FCE is much better, because you don't need to work with the premade things, you can create and animate your own from the ground up.
That will be fun. Not what I was talking about, but a nice feature. I know that FCE will have lots of capability that iMovie doesn't (by design), that's just gravy.
I have used iMovie HD 6 to place chapters where I wanted them in my last DVD project, I didn't have much trouble working with it although it is a bit more "professional grade" than iMovie (I know, not saying much). How do the two compare for learning curve/user friendliness? I would like to say that I'd get a book to read on FCE but the truth is that on an average day I don't have time to watch the news let alone read a book.
In my opinion, FCE is definitely worth the investment and once you learn it you will never want to go back to iMovie!
Thanks, just the fact that the output is higher quality is a big pull for me. I think I'm going to take the plunge.
Now for the next question: FCE 4 or 3.5?

  • During DVD creation, get this message "Music not authorized to play"

I cannot get the music to record on my DVD. This just started two days ago right after I upgraded to v 7.3.1 of iTunes. I have successfully burned dozens of DVDs prior to this. I wonder if the iTunes upgrade is not compatible with iDVD now.
My problem is that I continuously get a message that the 3 songs I am using are "not authorized to play on this computer". This is BS because I downloaded them on this machine and they will play in iTunes. 7 days ago, these 3 songs downloaded onto the first DVD that I burnt, so they are authorized.
Also I get a message in iDVD that the program cannot access iTunes and that I must upgrade to version 4.0 or later.

    Hi Tom
Don't know the real problem BUT accordingly
    music/audio from iTunes there
often is problems about - silece parts when making
    the DVD.
The work around this is - and might most probably
    help You too.
    - In iTunes select audio needed
    - Export out as an audio-DV .aiff
    - Use the audio on this in Your movie project
∆ Now it should work OK
Tedious - Yes I know but this is a working solution.
    Yours Bengt W
thanks for your suggestion. I can try that, but it is tedious and I have not had to do that before. I want to be able to do this as quickly as I did before when the music played all the way through and I did not get those messages that said "this computer is not authorized to play this song"
I want to go back to iTunes, v 7.3 that I used before the recent upgrade to 7.3.1 since that older version worked.
Are you listening Apple techs???? You have a problem with v 7.3.1 upgrade. I am going to try to do this project on my lap mac which has not bee upgraded.

  • Interactive question DVD creation?

My client wants an interactive dvd produced ie: who wants to be a millionaire - for training use.
Part of the DVD will be a multiple question session with say 3 answer choices - you choose an answer nd it tells you - say a tick with correct and a happy sound or wrong and a unhappy bong!... then advance to the next question.
Can this be done in DVDSP or would it have to be created in a another program such as director (is it still around?) then brought in as a separate part?
    Many thanks

quick and easy way (if there isnt hundreds of questions) is have the question in text with the three answer choices as buttons each linked to a separate menu, one for correct answer another for the inncorect answer. A next button will navigate to the next question menu.
Director and Authorware is still very much around, not as popular as Flash these days but you would create a CD ROM not a DVD-Video. Computer based systems provide far better control and authoring opportunities than DVD-Video; point displayed at each stage, final scores given tracking system allows more that one playe and logging in to multiple sessions.

  • Why does my Gopro black 3+ video look so bad on PRE11 while editing & after DVD creation playback.

Well let start with.  When I do a project with video from my Samsung S4 phone or my IPhone 5 or my Canon T4i  looks great on computer screen and when I play back a burned DVD or AVHCD.  I just directly import from file on my hard drive.  My Samsung is at 1920x1040 30fps mp4 .  I believe the IPhone is a 1920x1080 MOV format.
It is the GoPro video that  PRE11 has a problem with.  I record at 1920x1080 30fps.  Nothing special.
First the computer screen.  On both of my computers when I right click on the playback screen.
Quality Highest; Magnification Fit; Safe Margin unchecked; Playback External device None; Aspect Hardware; Desktop Audio; 24Progresive Conversion Interlaced 2332; Export External Device DV 29.97 720; Checked Disable video output.
As for Publish.  DVD I use preset NTSC widescreen dvd; AVCHD h264 1920x1080I ntsc.
Any other ideas why the GoPro video looks bad on computer screen & on dvd on hd tv.
Some say you first must convert GoPro mp4 to AVI then import.  That seems crazy.  Why can Samsung mp4 work great and GoPro mp4 not.
It seems that Adobe has not correctly written code for MP4 from on of the largest camcorder producers.

Thank you for starting your own new thread on your Premiere Elements workflow after initially posting in the thread of another.

For your convenience, this is a copy of my reply to you in that thread which was left unanswered
    johng1234321
Thank you for the reply. What I was looking for mostly are the properties of the 1920 x 1080p30 GoPro3+ Black footage that you are trying to use in
Premiere Elements 11. Are you working with the H.264.mp4 format or are you working with a Cineform.avi format? If it is the H.264.mp4 format, I am not seeing why you should be doing anything else but importing the H.264.mp4 into Premiere Elements 11 using the project preset set by you manually or the project automatically. Best you set the project preset manually to assure the correct project preset in this case.
    NTSC
    DSLR
    1080p
    DSLR 1080p30@ 29.97
There are times when the project does not interpret correctly the properties of the video when it is the first file dragged to the Timeline. When it does not do it correctly, it does not give you the closest possible fit between project preset and properties of source media, instead it gives you its default 1080i which is not appropriate for your 1080p footage.

To get a better perspective on your comparison between your cell phone and GoPro results....are you saying that you can take the videos from the cell phones and import them into Premiere Elements 11 without issue, audio out of sync or other? Are you converting the cell phone video at any time - to change a variable to constant frame size or other?
Depending on your details, I would offer to look at a sample of your specific H.264.mp4 file for which you cannot get a decent DVD-VIDEO on DVD or AVCHD format on DVD disc. If you opt to do this, you might consider sending the sample via a Dropbox link posted in this thread. I am concerned that your GoPro issue on Premiere Elements 11 is going to get lost in this thread on a different topic. If we do not gain ground on the issue soon, please consider starting a new thread on your issue so that the details and especially the results will be found more easily by those users seeking answers for the type of problem that you describe.
The answers will be in the details.
    Thanks for the follow ups.

  • Help with fast DVD creation?

I have been going through the lynda training and not finding my answer on my problems. I have FCP3 and am buidling a DVD. Here are my steps. I have a menu which I drop a m2v video and an ac3 file and set as my opening - first play. From there I clicked new menu and called it menu 1. I dropped in a m2v file and added buttoms. I them created for tracks and added my content. I set the end jump of the first play menu to go to menu one. The 4 buttons in menu one all go to my tracks which I have an end jump back to the menu on or main menu.
Problem. one the remote, I can navigate the buttons and get to tracks, I can also end jump from tracks to get back to the menu, but I can't get fast forward or rewind to work on the remote. I also can't get the title and menu buttons to work properly. The title button always comes back to first play. i have all the buttons disabled for each track, but I can get a button on the remote programmed to come back to the menu at any time. I need to get better navigation of my DVD via remote and it wont work. I want to go to tracks, tracks to the main menu at any time, fast forward and rewind. I do have pause and play.
Can anyone walk me through the basics of an opening menu, a main mene and four tracks with some decent navigation. Again the lynda videos talk about layered menues and not regular menus.
I appreciate any help or even a link to a quick tutorial that will walk me through this. I know how to get my DVD set up and burned, but can't get the buttons on the remote to do the basics.
    Cheers.

In DVDSP the 'Title' menu is the first one you made... unless you specify otherwise in the property inspector.
What is the first menu for? If it isn't actually a menu, use a track... then your first menu will in fact be your first (and Title) menu. Drop your M2V and AC3 file into a track, set the end jump to the menu and set the disc 'first play' as the track.
Now, in your menu set the buttons to the tracks as you have done. It's not clear whether you've set any chapter markers in your tracks, or where you are not seeing the ff/rw functionality - in simulator?
Set the menu call for each track to go to the menu and set the end jump for the tracks to go to the menu as well.
Incidentally, you don't need four tracks - one would do - and you can use stories to demarcate the different sections. Stories can also have menu calls set up too...

  • DVD Creation Using Flash

Hi, is it possible to create an interactive DVD/CD using
Flash? I want to be able to insert a DVD/CD into a machine (MAC or
PC), double click the icon and launch a mini program with buttons
such as play, next, etc. Can this be done using Flash only or do I
    require different software?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

Create your working FLASH file as an AIR type...otherwise it
    would require a
browser to see the flash file. Also, for PC users you would
    probably want
a .ini file to launch it.

  • IMovie '11 dvd creation issues

Hi -- I have a new iMac that did not include iDVD as apple no longer includes this in the iLife package.  I have imported a movie into iMove but I see no option to burn this movie onto a dvd disk.  I'm running iMovie '11 v 9.0.4
The format of the movie imported is .m4v.  Am I missing something?
      Thanks.

You will need DVD software either iDVD or a 3rd party app.
    Two ways to go.
Approach the Apple store where you bought your iMac and ask them to give you a copy of the iLife 11 disc.
Tell them you need iDVD. Many others have reported that Apple will come to the party.
Otherwise you will need to buy an iLife 11 disc which contains iDVD and install it on your computer.
You can source these discs on eBay, Amazon or Apple stores.
Another way is to buy 3rd party DVD burning software such as Roxio.
    Best, Z.

  • DVD creation form iMovie

Ok, I did a search. Nothing popped up much. But Im sure it has been discussed.
Took my one on one last night with iMovie, then, I asked about burning a DVD. Was told that iDVD was no more and I should go searching for some burning software. Dont have a  big desire so spend alot of money on more software when I bought this Mac to use this iMovie and iPhoto
So, who can suggest reasonable software to take my project and burn to a dvd to give to friends to watch in their PC or TV.
Don't need tons of gimmics and special stuff. Once I do what I do in iMovie, I should be good to go.
Unfortunately the one to one guy was not great help on this suggestion so here I am. Great editing software. No burning software and a $2500 Mac on my desk.

And to add to what AppleMan1958 has listed here I would mention an open source program called Burn, which has been mentioned frequently by a long time contributor to the iMovie Discussion Group, Karsten Schlüter

HI everyone - this has probably been covered already - but so many messages --
Anyways, I have Toast, and burning a DL+R disc to make a movie DVD (TS-FOLDER items).
The program, Toast 10, hangs when it's trying to write-out. What's a -5001 error - I see this when I cancel the burn.
I'm using the suggested verbatim discs.

You might want to check the Roxio forums; I googled and found a couple of references to that error with the suggestion that it was a firmware problem (needed to update firmware); however, those threads were quite old. One of them suggested to ignore the error and the DVD turned out OK.
