DVD DL vs copy

Hi all,
is the DVD burner in a macbook able to copy up to 9.4GB dvd disk? DL?
michel

thank you all for your inputs...
I went to the store and the only DVD DL available are DVD+R DL. Not sure again what is the difference between - and +. Play on PC or dvd player ...not sure which one is better..
well I looked at my system profiler says:
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD Write:-R,-R DL, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
questions
1-so I beleive it can burn DVD DL....! Correct???
2-I was trying to use Roxio popcorn and everytime I try to copy a Video_TS folder, it quits. But popcorn works perfectly on my G5. This is only for Single layer disc.
any ideas on this one?

  • When I try to restore my iTunes library from DVD, iTunes stops copying the files after some minutes

On 2 of my 9 DVDs, iTunes stops copying and I can't do anything with iTunes anymore. I have to reboot my computer. So I'm not able to bring back all my files. Has anyone got help?

Thanks but I already did read all of the help notes, which aren't very helpful for this.  I did find out the problem- Apple.....they evidently changed one of the major upsides to their old software- being able to back up your entire library onto dvd's- so you can longer do that or restore from the dvds created from older versions of itunes.  I suspect greed is at play in that Apple now wants you to pay $24.95 per year to use a "cloud" service where they back it up for you.  I can buy a lifetime supply of back up dvds for one year's worth of cloud.  So I am now looking into other music software as I am Appled-out.  There is no reason for them to take away the back up portion of the software other than to sell you thrir cloud service.  As we have already given them a ton of money for 5 Ipods and a bunch of music, I think we have contributed enough.  Time to look to solutions outside of the Apple money tree.  But thank you for reading and replying.

  • MBPro won't read SL DVD - can I copy the install DVD on a PC?

My MacBook Pro won't read the SL install DVD (as others have had problems with). I have access to a PC with DVD to DVD copy ability. My question is, can I burn a copy of the install DVD to another DVD and use that copy (assuming my MB will be able to read the copy DVD)? Is this possible? Any tips on how would be much appreciated - a shame to buy the install DVD and unable to use it. Buying an external DVD drive doesn't make sense, as I plan on upgrading my MB with the year. Thanks!

My question is, can I burn a copy of the install DVD to another DVD and use that copy (assuming my MB will be able to read the copy DVD)?
I'm not sure why you think that would work. Either the disk is damaged, in which case you won't be able to magically create a good copy, or your drive is damaged, in which case it's not going to read a copy any better than the original.
Is this a new disk, or have you used it before? Is it readable in other machines? Can your Mac read other disks?

  • Issues with DVD and CD copying

I used Nero to copy my own videos such as the ones I recorded from my camcorder and from my digital camera. I use a blank CD-R and DVD-R. After burning, they only can be played in my computer but not my DVD Player that connects to the TV. Do I have to change the format that can be play on the DVD? Is VCD an excellent format that can be play on both computers and DVD players? Thanks.

To answer the last question first; VCD is old and less clear format for today's video.  DVD players can play it but the resolution is poor, kind of like a VHS tape as compared to a DVD.  For something to play in a DVD player, it most likely will require that a DVD authoring software be used.  Windows Movie Maker can do this but it may not like the format of the camcorder you have.  To use something that can handle most any type of video and convert it to a DVD playable in most any DVD player, try DVDFlick.  Free and found here: http://www.dvdflick.net/download.php
Depending on what part of Nero was used, it too should be able to make a DVD playable in a DVD player.

  • Can I burn a DVD-R to copy my MacBook Pro? It is going to the Mac hospital.

Can DVD-Rs be used to backup my MacBook Pro?

I agree with Kurt Lang, but I would add
... where cloning means using a utility such as SuperDuper (free for a full clone), or Carbon Copy Cloner (also an excellent cloning utility), or using Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility and tell it to restore from the boot disk to the external disk.
Personally I would go with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, as they are easier to use and have proved themselves to be excellent utilities (I own both).  If money is an issue and this is just a one time being safe clone, then choose SuperDuper as making a full clone, which is what you are doing, is free with SuperDuper (SD makes their money when you buy the software to make incremental updates to a clone; increments take a lot less time, so are well worth the cost of the package is you are going to use it as a regular backup package).
However, if you only have a few files in your home directory you want to save (like under 5GB), then you could burn a DVD.
But if you do not already have an external backup device, then it is time to start thinking about it, as disks fail, and after you loose data is the wrong time to start thinking about regular backups.

  • Onestep dvd help - only copying one section

I've successfully used onestep idvd to burn a disc from our camcorder. I put the 2nd dv tape in the camcorder, brought up onestep and first it gave me an error message (sorry, can't remember it) and then said it was aborting the process. Tried it again and it only copied the 1st section of my video, it stopped copying at the point where i turned the camera off and then back on again at a later time...the point where the blue screen comes up between footage. How do i tell onestep dvd to copy all the dv tape?
    Thanks

OneStep is looking for breaks to stop copying, and your break is too big. No way I know of to get OneStep to "skip" the timecode break. I suggest you import into iMovie, and then use OneStep like this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/424.html
    or just use iMovie>iDVD normally........

  • DVD Super Drive copying slowly

    Hi,
can anyone help... my superdrive on a MBP C2D is copying data from DVD's very slowly. I'm trying to copy video TS folders from DVD's onto my desktop and it takes roughly an hour to copy 4gigs. That seems very slow.

If nothing else works for you, when you hear sound of drive trying to open after pressing keyboard eject button, strike the box of mac pro on both sides of the drawer with clenched fists.
I have been doing this for years.

  • Protecting a DVD from being copied

Is it possible to create a DVD using iDVD and protect it so that it cannot be copied by others? Thanks for your help!

Even commercial DVDs cannot accomplish this, hard as they try.

  • DVD digital file copy problems

First question- When downloading a DVD "digital file" through Itunes, is the movie actually downloaded from the disc in the drive, or from the Itunes libray?
Second question- How long should it take to download?
Third question- Where the heck is my movie?
Fourth question- How can I contact Itunes directly?
    Here is the rundown:
I signed uo for Itunes today to upload my "Disney file" digital copy to my mp3 player. Well, that has created some problems. All was going smoothly, or so I thought. Itunes took the activation code (as a form of payment basically) and I got confirmation that the movie was being downloaded to my Itunes account. It was taking a long, long time to download and I was not sure if the movie was being downloaded from the disc that Disney provided, or if it was being downloaded from the Itunes libray, so I ended up taking the disc out of the drive to see what would happen. (I hope I didn't mess things up for myself!)
I waited a bit longer and reinserted the disc and tried the activation code again, and as I suspected the code was denied, so it wouldn't attempt to download again.
It has been a few hours and my movie is nowhere to be found on my Itunes account. Being new to the whole Itunes thing I wonder if I did something wrong, or if I am not looking in the right place.
    I really hope I didn't make a big mistake!!

I did this with the Family Guy "Blue Harvest" digital copy, and it (entering the code and 'purchasing') only authorizes playback of the content from the disc in the drive. Other than cookies, there is no download from the iTunes store. The software treats the copying from the disc as a download though, and it shows copy progress as download progress. That threw me off the first time I did it.

  • Which master DVD for system copy ?

    Hi
If you have a Nw7.0 SR1 installation that has since been patched to be the same or higher level than SR2 - which master DVD should be used for a homegeneous system copy ? SR1 or SR2 ?
SR2 seems logical, but then you need also the DVD's (java etc) for SR2 which you normally wouldn't have around...

    Hi Per,
I will go ahead with the SR1 ones... when you do a Homogenoues System Copy you basically are installing a new system and then moving the database with all the patches from the source system.

  • DVD@ccess folder copy

Hiya - does anyone know if there's a way to PREVENT DVDSP copying the DVDccess folder during a build? I'd rather place the DVD@ccess Windows installer in a folder with other items, which I can in the DVD-ROM content but a redundant DVDccess folder is created no matter what. I can use other tools (like mkisofs) to get rid of it from a disk image, but this is a DVD-9 project and I need to make layered DDP2.1 files for replication, which means the build and format steps need to happen within DVDSP.
I've also trawled through the various project xmls like ObjectDatB (plutil is my friend) but there seems to be no switchable option to prevent inclusion of this folder once DVD@ccess links are in place.
    Ideas? Thanks in advance.

DVD@ccess looked promising but it's a non-starter. The technology was unreliable when it was new and I do not believe it has seen neither improvement nor revision. I have used it successfully only once back in DVDSPv2 and that was for a Mac-only release.
Can you accomplish your goals with any other technology? Does Adobe Encore offer you any better solution for a Windows client (never used it myself)?
sorry not to have ay better advice for you other than to forget DVD@ccess. Please come back and let us know if you find a workable solution; it will help others in similar situations.

  • Copied School Project from DVD-Burn New Copy?

I copied my son's school project from a school-supplied/created DVD to my hard drive. Now I'd like to make my own copy. Can I do this? Do I need to get the DVD again to make an image instead? Or, can I copy to my Palmcorder and then import as a file? Thanks.

    @J Keller
Roxio Toast can burn these to a new DVD, but I'm not aware of any Apple apps that can handle those files without other processing.
DVDSP can also address Video_TS folders (however most folks don't have apple's professional apps).
So I'd agree that Roxio Toast (or Apple's DU) is his best option here.
Btw ... If I'm not mistaken, I remember reading that you can also try dragging your Video_TS and Audio_TS into the blank disc icon in the Finder and burning it from there.

  • Taped Media Transfered to DVD - Can I copy to HD & edit in iMovie?

    Hello iMovie Gurus!
A friend has some taped content & has asked me to edit it for him. I am under the impression that if he gets it transfered to a DVD, I can then copy it to my harddrive and edit it with iMovie. Am I right in this assumption?
    Thanks,

  • Making a DVD impossible to copy

Hi there, I was hoping that someone might know about this......
I would like to create a DVD so that it plays perfectly but if someone wants to make copies of this DVD, that it would not be possible. (More or less, that they would have to come to me for more copies).
I would really appreciate some advice.
    Thank you!

to add a professional copy protection, your DVD has to be 'glas mastered' in some professional DVD-printer factory.. they own licences for that protection scheme.. and, for sure, they let themself getting paid.. the mentioned 3k$ seems to me realistic .. plus copy costs per piece.
... and there're tools as *, ** or the easy to use ****** (rippping as topic is not allowed on this board, and as a European, I'm not even allowed to speak the names out loud ) which 'break'/rip that copy protection within minutes........
for me, there's only three ways of 'copy protection' on a consumer level:
    1) add watermarks to your video.. it doesn't avoid the copying, but it mentions, it is YOUR work..
    2) make your DVDs accessible.. seen DVDs on sale on some 'collector's tradeshow' .. you could buy them NOW and for such a cheap price, I don't care for +ripping and converting and...+
    3) add 'features' outside the disk.. a good booklet, a link to some 'additional' website with extras etc (ok, that link could be 'shared' too, individualize access by somekind of PIN...), a funny case, a mailing list..

  • DVD-Video disk copy

My sister-in-law has 16 VHS tapes (copied from Super-8, I believe) dating back to 2000 with family footage.
Using a Samsumg combo-deck to save the footage while I am visiting.  The tapes dub to MPEG-II (according to spec sheet) just filne and the created DVDs play in the DVD player.
But I want to copy those DVDs single-shot using MBP-style software so she does not have to re-play all 16 tapes (even partially filled, some) to make a set.
But their PC and my MBP do not recognie the disk as even containing material.  DU does not see it as a mounted volume, and making a DU "new disk image" results in an "input error".
I tried handbrake, and MPEG stream (Klaus1 recommended) and those do not reconize the Samsung-burned disk.
Since we are getting it saved (the tape footage is degraded, clearly), we have accomplished task 1.  But she is very busy and does not have housrs per day to spend hooking Firewire cables to slowly transfer play-out from the DVD to iMovie or oter movie software.

iDVD can be purchased as part of the iLife '09 or iLife '11 suites still available from many retailers including Amazon. Other options can be found listed here:
