DVD DR8-A2

Hi I’m having a problem with my DVD burner
My pc is
Athlon 64 3200+
Msi k8t neo
Xp pro
SP2
I purchased an msi dr8-a2 DVD burner and I have 2 problems with it. first all DVD’s it makes at some point when playing the movie back lock up (The picture freezes). The second problem is the speed the DVD burns at it will burn at 2.4*.
Things I have tried
I went in to device manager and it called the drive an  ATAPI  DVD  RW  8*MAX
I double clicked on it to give me properties then went in to details and is said
IDE\CDROMATAPI_DVD_RW_8*MAX_____________150D___\5&211F198B&0&0.0.0
I THEN WENT ON TO MSI WEB SITE TO DOWNLOAD THE LATEST FIRMWARE
Went in to download optical storage
Then optical storage firmware
Then DVD Duel drive firmware
Looked down the list until I found the DR8-A2 then downloaded the file called DR8A2_150D
Then made a boot floppy and put the files in and restarted the pc the pc booted from the floppy and run the software.
Executed dvflash_scr.bin  it gave me 2 choices  1) dvd rw  2) cdrw  so I went with choice 1 DVD.
IT THEN TOLD ME “THIS FILE IS NOT SUPPORT FOR DEVICE”
SO I HAVE AN MSI DVD RW (DR8_A2) I GO TO THE MSI WEB SITE DOWNLOAD THE DR8_A2 SOFTWARE AND I GET BACK AN ERROR THIS IS NOT SUPPORT FOR DEVICE.
SO WHAT IS IT WHEN I’M SURE I DON’T KNOW
Helppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there
both your problems are likely to depend on the media you used. Depending on the DVD brand you may have a different DVD speed and a DVD8x will be sometimes burnt at 4x or 2.4X. This is not that bad, expecially if you have an old DVD player, which may not accept DVds burnt at the highest speed.
Concerning the picture freeze you noticed, well, sometimes it happens when you didn't remove properly the dvd "protections"...
And pay attention to the firmware upgrade, it's somewhat risky.

  • DR8-A firware upgrade to dvd dual-layer?

I am very happy with my DR8-A burner, but i am wondering if MSI has any plans to upgrade the firmware to the future Dual-layer dvd formats.  I have read that Bueq is offer this for their new drives.

if it can upgrade to 8x8 - good or bad news

  • DR8-A reads DVDs, not CDs

No new hardware changes on my system, nor any major software changes that I can recall.  As far as I can tell, this happened a couple of days ago pretty much out of nowhere.  But now, my MSI DR8-A will no longer read CDs of any sort -- premanufactured data, audio, or CD-R/R-Ws.  DVDs still work fine, but if I put a CD in the drive, neither the system nor any application software recognizes that there's any disk in the drive at all.
I've tried uninstalling various bits of CD/DVD software and reinstalling them, uninstalling the device (both physically and its driver) and reinstalling it, and nothing seems to work.  I've tried booting off of a Windows CD, and that doesn't seem to work either, suggesting (to me...is this right?) that it might be a hardware problem.
I *did* have a power failure in the middle of the night the other day while the computer was on.  This seems a kind of weird problem to result from that, though.

    Hi Del.
Thanks for your post.  But I'm not sure where I'm supposed to check to see that the drive is enabled to read CD* formats, or where to check the DMA.
The firmware is up to date, and I've scanned through all the options in the device manager, but don't see any options like those you describe.
    Thanks,
    -Matt

  • MEGA 865 Deluxe with MSI DR8-A 8x8 DVD±R/±RW Writer

    Hi everyone,
I am just about to put this box together, please advice..
Heard any compatibility issue on this one? IE, ejecting problems or loosing functionality in PC or HIFI mode? or any issues at all....
    MEGA 865 Deluxe with MSI DR8-A 8x8 DVD±R/±RW Writer
It will be a bummer if I go put this together and it doesnt work properly. That will be money down the tube.
    Thanx.

I have the same box and optical device. I have yet to get an audio CD to play completely through in HiFi mode. It will play for 3 to five minutes and then quits, LCD reads No Disk. I can get it to start up again with no problems but it only plays a few minutes at a time.  It works fine in PC mode both in playing Audio CD's and DVDs so I am guessing that my problem lies in Hi Fi circuitry/or wires. I believe you should be able to use the 865 in Hi Fi mode without O/S, Memory, or even a CPU. Good luck.

  • Media DVD-Rs for DR8-A (UK-pref Scan.co.uk)

    Hi all
My preferred brand (Ritek Tangos G04) appear to have been phased-out.  Anyone recommend any cheap (bulk) alternatives?  Have referred to MSI list but it does not  appear up-to-date as the replacements (G05) do not appear.
I would prefer disks sold by http://www.scan.co.uk (local) but would much appreciate any recommendations re alternatives.
Alternatively, anyone seen any Tangos on sale lately ?
I remember the pain I had initially trying to find compatible disks !
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give

    Hi there
I tried several cheap brands and trhey worked (apprently) fine with my DR8-A. But you'd better beware of the cheapest brands, as many people (and me too) experimented nasty problems. For instance, I "lost" some movies, the dvds were ok and then suddenly they died, that is really bad.
Personally, I find TDK DVD-Rs quite cheap (at least not such expensive), work fine and trust them.

  • SONY DVD-R (color collection) and DR8-A does not recognise

Not sure if anyone else has had this problem, but I thought I saw a mention of it in another thread. The Sony DVD-R media does not seem to recognise in the DR8-A drive. I thought my drive was malfunctioning, but other DVD-R media works just fine.  This is the color collection 5 pack of DVD-Rs (the only thing colored is the top of the DVD though). These are 1x-4x rated DVD-Rs, is this a problem with all DR8-A drives, or just mine?
    -Adam

I understand that some media may suffer issues, and that other manufacturs' drives may as well. However, if this an issue plauging the DR8-A it would behoove MSI to address it since Sony is a pretty recognised name brand producer of DVD-R media.
    Anyone else had these fail?

  • Problem with burned DVD on DR8-A

    Hi everybody,
    I have a strange problem.
If you could help me it will be great.
I burned a Memorex 8x DVD+R on my DR8-A at 4x speed. This works fine.
So after i look my DVD in Windows Explorer and it shows me the all the files ( i have twenty video files of 200 MO each) of my burned DVD. But i can only access to the 10 first ones. I see the others but i can't copy them to hardrive, i can't  launch them with Windows Media Player (they are movie files).
    My PC configuration is :
    ASUS A7V8X
    AMD Athlon XP 2400+
    512 MB RAM
    80 GB MAXTOR DiamondMax Plus 9 7200rpm IDE, 8Mb
    120 GB MAXTOR DiamondMax Plus 9 7200rpm IDE, 8Mb
    Leadtek Winfast A280 LTD
    MEMOREX 16x DVD player
    MSI DRA-8 DVD writer.
    Windows 98 SE

You can use Nero CD-DVD Speed Utility to check if you have the disc burnt properly.

  • Dead DR8-A DVD burner!

My DR8-A DVD recorder has stopped working. The drive shows itself in bios and in WinXP but I can not read or burn any CDs or DVDs.
I upgraded the firmware of the drive a while back, all according to the instructions and safety procedures provided by the MSI Live update program. I aslo have a very stable ANTECH 380 W PSU and had no stability problems during firmware flashing. The flashing completed sucessfully and the drive worked at first, but now nothing is working. I haved tried flashing again, and it completed sucessfully again but the drive is still not working.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you look through these forums you will find a lot of complaint about the DR8-A.
Mine stopped doing CD's first then DVD's. It did need to be replaced. I doubt the firmware update would have done damage to kill it now if it worked at first. Sounds like it may be dead

  • DR8 A DVD/CD burner survey

    howdy
    i have one of these drives and after reading through this forum i was a little shocked to see so many issues with these drives. personally i've had 1 problem with mine where it has difficulty recongising blank CDR's. after flashing to the lastest bios its been fine. in all honesty i don't use my drive that often to burn CD's or DVDs though i do play alot of music and films though it. despite the fact that forums are used to document and troubleshoot problems so gaining an idea of overall drive quality is going to be a little skewed. however i was wondering if those reading with these drives could post and answer these questions;
    1-have you had/having a problem with a DR8-A unit
2-if so, has it been fixed through troubleshooting or flash
    cheers.

I currently have one being RMA'd.
It simply stopped recognising DVD's (pressed, writable, rewritable, all types) altogether.
It could still read cd's and cd-r's.
I've never had any luck with the HD-Burn feature of the writer either despite using high quality cd's when testing.
Having said that, the DVD writing part when it actually worked was very good. It could flawlessly write to 4x Shintaro DVD's and Infosmart DVD's (both cheap DVD -R media) that my replacement burner (a liteon 812S SOHW) cannot burn correctly.
EDIT: drive was hooked up to an ASUS A7N8x Deluxe Rev2.0 motherboard, but not directly to the built in IDE ports, it was running off of a PCI IDE controller (CMD 09648 based). The drive was tested on the built-in ports and several other different boards before being returned to place of purchase for RMA.
EDIT2: checked Liteon's website and they have new firmware available that pretty much solved my media problems (for Shintaro at least, infosmart still does not work). MSI can stick their burner wherever... I should have known better than to buy MSI again after the MSI nForce1 (MSI K7N420 Pro) fiasco I had the misfortune to be caught up in.
EDIT3: for those of you curious about the media I mentioned:
    Shintaro - http://shintaro.com.au

      Nominal Capacity = 4.38GB
    Manufacturer Maybe = Princo Corporation
    SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 4.0X (Write)
    InfoSmart - http://www.infosmartmedia.com.au
    Code: [Select]

  • DR8-A will read DVDs but not CDs

After a few months of use my MSI DR8-A has just stopped reading cds in both windows and dos. I hadn't installed or removed anything and I have flashed the drive to the most recent version. I'm assuming the cd laser is either dirty or knackered, but if anyone has any ideas...

Replacment drive has the same issues, I did upgrade the Firmware to 1.5 and it seems better.  I will give it some time to test, first reaction is not favorable...

  • Dr8-a via usb2 external box

I recently bought the msi dr8-a writer and have problems burning dvd's. I burnt the dvd that came with it without any problems, but when i tried to burn other media (ritek and bulkpaq) it keeps coming up with a "focus or tracking" error.
I have connected to a friends computer and it burns various media without any problems.
I can burn cd's through my laptop without problems, but it keeps giving me the above error message when burning dvd's.
My laptop spec is more than sufficient to run the writer.
Does anyone have any ideas ??

  • Media Center DVD 'Stutters' on MEGA 865

    Hi
I am an IT professional, but I am a newcomer to the MEGA series PCs.  I bought a MEGA 865 Delux for a 'computer newbie' friend as payment for a favour, and I am in the process of configuring it all now.
    Spec is
MEGA 865 flashed to bios 1.2
MSI DVD Player DR8-A2 BIOS 1.6
    NO TV CARD (yet)
    Win XP PRO SP2
    512MB RAM
Celeron 2.0GHz (yes I know, but I had a new one going spare, it'll do for now)
I have applied ALL latest drivers
I have applied ALL latest BIOS patches
Windows XP is fully patched up to SP2
I am currently running in 1024x764 Truecolour 70Hz mode.
Everything works great, my friend should be really pleased with it  ... except
    MEDIA CENTER III !!!
Now that was kind of the idea of buying the MEGA PC, my friend could use it with the remote control for DVD, Radio etc etc, but when I play a DVD using the media center it 'stutters', the video and sound are interrupted and it really is unwatchable.
Looking at the CPU resource is see that it is strained to 100% utilisation.
If I run the same DVD Movie with PowerDVD (came with the MSI DVD Drive), or even with Windows Media Player, it plays beautifully and the CPU is comfortably down at 40% utilisation.   Unfortunately the remote seems to do nothing for PowerDVD.
Is anybody finding that the Media Center works great on their system? (if so, what's the secret?)
Has anybody else encountered similar problems to mine?
Does anybody know how I could fix the problem so that when I present this great new system to my friend as an expression of my gratitude, it is not 'flawed'?
Please help if you can, I would like to deliver the system in the next couple of days.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Thanks for the advice everyone.
After much searching I found the elusive registry changes and applied them to my system.  Unfortunately these changes made no discernable difference to the DVD playback.
While I appreciate that there are a number of Open Source projects in development (dependant on 'Girder', pay software that still does not appear to FULLY replace the advertised functionality of the Remote/LCD/Radio etc), and also alternative products that I could purchase, I do not feel that I should have to buy these to make my MEGA media center PC play DVDs.
It's not as if the inability to play DVDs is a minor issue in a Media Center.  It's fundamental!!
If it will not work as a media center PC 'as supplied' then it seems to me that I should return it to the retailer and buy a 'Shuttle PC' for much less money.  I could spend the savings (I reckon on about £70) on a better CPU or just pocket the difference.  Features and software that do not work are of little use to anybody.
With all due respect to you all, if everybody who bought the system and had these problems returned it to the store as 'not fit for purpose' then I suspect MSI would have resolved the issue long ago.  It seems to me that end user tolerance has resulted in MSI's indifference.
If I have no fix by Thursday then it's back to the store.
I have mailed MSI Tech Support, hopefully they will come up with something as the system looks great otherwise.
Still open to suggestions that do not include 'break up the CD' or 'buy this other software'.
    Thanks
    Steve

  • Now on 2nd DR8-A and still Problems

I'm on my replacement drive of my replacement drive of a dr8-a and I have been less than pleased.   I get constant burn errors and underruns on dvd and cd media.  I've used no brand, name brands, and still no luck.  My pioneer a05 keeps on ticking and have never had a problem.
My biggest complaint is the totaly useless hdburn, have yet to have one to work.
I've updated this one to 130d as the company I purchased from refuses to send another, and still get power calibration errors.
MSI, you need to fix your stuff before sending it out, not waiting for people to send it back.
If anyone has luck with HDBurn, let me know.

HD Burn works without problems, burned 1,4gb on 48x Verbatim DLP (MCC) with Nero 6. No Multisession, speed 24x.
Have tried both Firmware Versions 1.20D and 1.30D.
There are small other Problems, writing on Ricoh 4x DVD+R with 8x speed gives a lot of Errors at the end of the DVDR and 9m50sec is 1min slower then other 8x Recorder.
Writing Strategy should be performed and also the speed.
If you get Buffer Underruns, you should first check if DMA is enabled for the MSI Drive and check that there is no other old CDROM or HD at the same Cable.

  • DR8-A2 Disc Compatibility

    Hello,
I am very happy with DR8-A2. I have upgraded the firmware to 150D without any problems. Everything goes smooth but I have bought DVD-R blank labeled Proformance 8x. The problem is that the dvd cannot write to the disks with 8x but with 4x.
Is it possible to put in a new firmware and add in proformance dvd-r disks and also more dvd-r disks from other companies to work at 8x instead of 4x ?
    Thanks

What brand is the disk? Normally, for good brand it will work but not for cheap brand. Brands like sony, imation, philips etc. are good.
