What do you mean by it stopped operating properly? Does it no longer open or does it not read DVDs? Can you explain more on what the issue is?

Try charging the iPhone via a wall socket for at least 30 minutes then try a reset by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and the home button for 20 seconds (maybe longer) until the Apple logo appears, ignore the red slider. Then turn back on. You won't lose any data doing the reset.

Numbers documents from iOS need Numbers 3.2 on a Mac to open. And Numbers 3.2 requires Mavericks. If you are using Mavericks you can get Numbers 3.2 from the Mac App Store. It will be free IF you have Numbers 2 (iWork '09) installed. Otherwise you must buy it.
Your other option is to send the Numbers file as an Excel file via e-mail to yourself to open with an earlier version of Numbers.

OK, the only thing that I can suggest at this point is to take the machine to your local Apple Store and have them download and install the latest version of Safari. It's likely something that they'll do for free if you get a nice Genius...
I don't know what I was thinking about - finely figured out that you MUST have an iOS or other device!
Sorry we couldn't solve the problem... hopefully, you've a nearby Apple Store? Or an AASP?

Plug it into the computer and start iTunes. Hold down the sleep/power button and home button together for 10 seconds, then release the power button and continue to hold down the home button until a message appears in iTunes telling you an iPhone in recovery mode has been detected. Have you tried closing the iTunes app completely and seeing if it works when you re-open it ? From the home screen (i.e. not with iTunes 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iTunes app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

My MacBook Pro will not boot up. I was aware of something odd when I switched it off a couple of hours ago now when I push the 'on' switch something starts - fans I think, and the little indicator light on the front. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

I had the same issue I bought my MacBook Pro in Jan. my harddrive was bad and they had to replace it. I know the guy held down the shift botton for a little then pressed the power botton while still holding down the shift botton and it turned on but not completely since my hard drive was bad.

@ sberman - All good questions, but the issue is being resolved as we speak. I downloaded a video rental to my iTunes 11.0.2 on my MacBook (OSX 10.6.8). I was trying to watch the rental on my machine, but as I said, nothing would play. To resolve the issue, I contacted Apple Support by submitting an issue ticket through iTunes. They reset my purchase/rental, and gave me some steps to try (upgrade iTunes, ensure download is complete before disconnecting from the internet, etc., etc.). Hopefully this works!
