DVD Drive BAD - after 10.4.6. & Firmware Updates

After installing 10.4.6, then doing the Firmware Update 1.0 for the MacBook Pro I now have an extremely slow DVD drive.
I'm simply putting in CD/DVDs (Adobe, Macromedia, my own, anything...) and they takes ages to mount (3-4 minutes) or do not mount at all with the error saying the discs are unreadable by this system.
Everything was fine before, as I was installing applications fine...

Hi!
Good for you! Great.
Didn't work for me. My Superdrive doesn't read original CD-ROMS. No problems with DVDs and CD-R.
Since I migrated directly from my Intel iMac I didn't use any original CD since I reveived my MacBook Pro in February. Hope they'll send me an exchange. I can't send in the machine for days and/or weeks.
hmpf
Some kind of upset.
Greetings

  • External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.

External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.
I have the latest Airpor Time capsule 2gb. I specifically bought it so that I could have an external hardrive set up to wirelessly house my itunes library and movies. When i connect the drive, all i get is that the disk needs to be repaired.
the drive can works fine when connected to the macbook pro and I have run the verify and repair features in disk utility. I have also reset the airport timecapsule as well following these changes and still no change.
The 7.7.2 update says that it addressed the usb issue of not showing the drives but there are still problems as I cannot get it to appear.
    Please help.
    Thanks

How is the hard drive formatted?
Have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive when it is connected to the Time Capsule?
(The USB port on the Time Capsule is borderline as far as power is concerned....you may need to use a powered hub.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply)
If the drive is formatted correctly....and....it has ample power, it will "show up" when you open AirPort Utility, click Edit, then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window.
In the example below, my Time Capsule drive is named "Backups" and another drive named "WD Drive" is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
You should see the name of your Time Capsule drive (named "Data" unless you have changed the name) and the name of the USB drive if you perform the same check.
    What do you see?

  • DVD drive failed after upgrade to 10.4.9

After upgrading to OS X 10.4.9 I noticed that my internal DVD drive (SuperDrive Pioneer DVR-104) failed.
I did the delta upgrade and immediately checked the most common "error" of misbehaving eject key. The key did not function at all, even after pressing it for minutes.
Later I found out that the complete drive failed.
System Profiler tells me (sorry german output)
    Modell: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104
    Version: 0000
    Seriennummer:
    Absteckbares Laufwerk: Nein
    Protokoll: ATAPI
    Einheiten-Nummer: 0
    Socket-Typ: Intern
Note: no version or serial number!
DVD player gives the message (translated):
"no valid DVD drive found [-70012]"
Toast does not find the drive.
    I did:
    - repair permissions
    - repair drive/file system
    - the combo upgrade
    - reset parameter ram
    - reset all from open firmware
    - reset PMU
    no change
Do you have any hints besides replacing the drive?
Maybe it's just a coincidence. I did not use the drive for 2 weeks before
    the upgrade.

    Hi, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    It sounds like LaunchServices.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line:

  • Dvd drive hangs after an hour

I replaced the original super drive in my G5 dual 2.5 with a LaCie dual layer capable burner. It burns, reads, and writes fine, but everytime I leave a disc (cd or dvd) mounted in the drive for more than an hour without accessing it, the drive hangs, the disc will not eject, and the finder gives a spinning ball if I try to open the contents of the drive. I have to restart the computer in order to get the disc out, and often have to do a hard restart from the hang up if trying to access a disc after an hour.
    Any ideas ?
I updated the firmware and reinstalled the system since installing the drive, but there has been no change.

well, interesting issue you are having there. could be hardware/ could be software. could be firmware confusion.
if this was my issue , then i would do the following to try and isolate it.
    reset open firmware :
    restart holding appleoption O + F
in the text screen, type, " reset-all " , then hit return
also, i would reset the PMU ( power management unit )
there should be a reset button on your logic board near the memory card slots.
after these 2 resets, i would test for the issue to see if it persists. if the issue does persist, then it might be the optical drive. have you ever tested this drive out on a different unit? that would be my next step. i would put that optical drive in question into a different unit to see what happens there.

  • DVD Drive disappeared after installing Boot Camp on Windows 8

I am running Mountain Lion and I bootcamped Windows 8... this is a fresh install.
    1. I installed Windows 8 and the DVD is still working
    2. I installed Bootcamp software via DVD and was asked to reboot
    3. I reboot my iMac
    4. Now, my friggin DVD doesnt work anymore...
    5. I look at My Computer and it's gone.
    6. I look at the device manager and it's not there
    7. I showed hidden devices and the hl-dt-st dvdrw ga32 is there (disabled of course)
    8. i am writing to apple community after a night of searching for a solution in vain.
please help me. i really need my DVD drive
    thanks in advance

    thanks for the response
    1. Yeah I thought that's a mandatory thing because i need to be able to control the brightness with my keyboard, updated graphics card, boot camp control panel, etc
    2. No there's no enable for this because Windows 8 recognizes it as a "disconnected device" and asks me to reconnect the dvd drive to the machine (which it obviously already is).
    3. Ive tried those before, also even editing the registry but it didnt work.
It's weird because it never happened before on Snow Leopard » Lion bootcamp driver updates. Just in Mountain Lion

  • SATA DVD Drive disappeared after Install HELP!

I installed Snow Leopard using my second DVD drive in my Mac Pro. After install I tried ejecting the install DVD and it dissapeared but didn't eject the disk... that DVD drive is no longer recognized — I can't option+eject to get it to eject, when I do this it comes up with the Shutdown computer dialogue. "About this Mac" lists the drive as present under the Serial-ATA list, Toast doesn't recognize the disk. Any suggestions apart from paperclip?
    Thanks,
    John

Reboot and hold "option." In the boot menu, do you see the DVD? If so, try to eject it with the eject key.
If not, it sounds like something is wrong with the drive. The next thing would be to use the paperclip to get the disc out, and then troubleshoot the drive.

  • DVD drive problems after 10.4.7 updae

I successfully completed a 10.4.7 update after a nuke & repave of the internal hard disk. At the moment the only applications on my machine are Mac OS 10.4.7 and the iLife suite.
Since I installed 10.4.7 I'm having a problem with the internal DVD drive (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D Rev. A612) not working properly. On the first boot with the new OS the drive wasn't listed in System Profiler. I rebooted and now the drive is listed, but when I put in a DVD I get the tik-tik noise of the drive searching. Sometimes (maybe 1 in 5 attempts) it does detect the disk and mount it. Any ideas?

There's a cludgy solution to getting access to the disks which I'm finding works sometimes.
I created a new folder, e.g. "dvd" in my "Documents"
Inserted a DVD and clicked to ignore the fact that the Mac wouldn't read it.
Then using Terminal I mounted /dev/disk1, using the "dvd" folder as the mounting node:
    "/sbin/mount_cd9660 /dev/disk1 ./dvd" when I was in "Documents"
Then I could get into the folder. I've found that the "mount" command wouldn't do it, and neither did "mount -t iso9660", but mount_cd9660 seams OK.
    Other things to note:
If you want to watch a movie, you can similarly "ignore" the error message when you insert the disk, and then go to the File->Open Disk menu in VLC.
But Apple needs to get this lot sorter!

  • DVD Drive gone after itunes update

I can no longer access my DVD drive. Windows Vista Home Premium. Sony DVD drive. iTunes 7.5 . If I uninstall iTunes my system can recognize my DVD drive, but when I install iTunes my dvd drive is gone from the system, can't be recognized by itunes or windows. I've tried previous version so iTunes 7 but none seem to work. Any advice?

Thanks. I followed the instructions and removed both UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry entries, rebooted and my DVD drive could then be recognized by Vista. But..... when I started iTunes I received the error:
"The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burnging CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
So... since I was on a previous version I installed the latest, 7.5... and iTunes could then see the DVD drive, but when I rebooted, Vista could no longer see the DVD drive. iTunes re-installed the registry entry : UpperFilters, REGMULTISZ, GEARAspiWDM (does not put in the LowerFilters) so as it stands now, I have a registry file on my desktop that I have to run, to put back the GEARAspiWDM entry whenever I want to use iTunes, then remove it and reboot to use it in Vista - does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it without a workaround? Thanks.

  • Possible Solution to Apples not Being Able to Connect to WRT54G After 1.01.0 Firmware Update

So like everyone else that has apples on their networks, ours did not work after the 1.01.0 firmware update.  However after a few hours and messing around, I finally got them to work with the router without having to downgrade to .9.
So far they still work thorugh a restart and a cold start, so I'm hoping that this fix will stick.
To get this to work you need to have another open wireless connection that you can connect to and get online with.
    Steps:
    1) First open up safari or whatever you use... (obviously doesn't load otherwise you wouldn't be reading this)
    2) Connect to the open wireless network, and then hit refresh... (it should load up the page this time)
    3) Go back up and reconnect to your router.... now try your internet again using your connection.  It *should* work fine...  and you shouldn't have to do it ever again...
    Good luck, hope this helps

HI  , just an addition to the above.....for MAC's go to system preferneces and then to network...choose you network card uner "connect using" and then under the TCP/IP tab select configure manually.....assign a static IP , subnet and gateway to the MAC along with the DNS entries....this static IP will work with the 1.01.0 firmware version .
