DVD drive broken, Mac G5 having kernel panics at startup

After nearly 5 years of steady, trouble free use, my G5 iMac started acting up a few days ago. I get what I think are kernel panics at startup. I am usually able to get it running after a few restarts but I am worried. My DVD drive became unreliable a month after my 1 year warranty expired. For some reason it won't start up with the install disks that came with the cpu but will bootup from my DiskWarrior DVD. I tried rebuilding the directory with DiskWarrior but I got the blue screen when it was almost finished. I've decided to do and Archive and install because I'm sure my problem stems from programs I installed recently. Is it possible to do the Archive and Install from my Intell Powerbook which is running the same version software. I've tried it several times, inserting the iMac install disk on my PB with my iMac connected in Target Disk mode, but I keep getting the message that the software can't be installed on this computer (the PB). Is there another way I can perform an A&I, I don't have enough space on my iDisk to use SuperDuper to create a disk image. I'm almost at the panic stage here since I use my computer for work and I'm afraid it won't start up at all at some point.
I've performed all the usual steps, repair permissions and used Disk Utility on my Firewire connect PB to repair the disk. One odd thing is FontExplorerX all of a sudden quit on me two days ago (which has never happened in the 4 years I've used it) and told me to download it again, which I did.

Hi e. jones, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Other way around, with the iMac's Install Disc in the PB, boot the PB into T mode, boot the iMac with the Option key held down, wait for the Install Disk in the PB to show up as a boot option on the iMac.
But I think you have more serious problems. And, first you need to move some things off the iMac to make room for an A&I, you really need an external FW Drive right away.

No Thomas, it's a CLEAN install.  what you are looking at is an old panic attack before the clean install. But I formatted the harddrive (took about 8 hours to do) and put a clean install on.  It's still doing panic attacks
    here is a new one

Are you getting the KP on startup, after its booted?
If you startup in Safe Mode (depress Shift key during startup), does it KP?
Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060309075929717
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Constantly having kernel panics on Macbook Pro

    Hi all,
For the last couple of weeks I'm having kernel panics on my MBP. The last couple of days I'm having more and more of these panics. It's starting to drive me crazy and was wondering if someone could help me with my last rapport. Is it a third party or is it something with my RAM or graphic card? I searched for the reason a while, but I have no idea what is going on and I saw some people posted their reports, so I'm gonna try the same thing.
    Who's gonna be my hero?

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you'll be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a depot repair. The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Early 2006 iMac Kernel Panics on startup

We have recently purchased a second hand 20" iMac, and after a few days it has started to kernel panic on startup, before the Apple logo disappears. A whirring when it begins to turn on has also appeared.
I shall photograph the kernel panic message if it helps. The local Apple Store have suggested that since there is a greater time period before the Apple Logo appears, the fault might be something to do with the motherboard/hard drive. Are there any suggestions here which may help us?
    Thank you.

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Kernel panic at startup and impossible to reinstall SL

    Hi
I've recently bought the new iMac with SSD.
I've upgraded the Ram, adding 8go Crucial to the 4go existing.
The first time, I started very well, very quickly.
After that, I installed W7 on my bootcamp partition. It went very fine also.
After having installed W7, I booted on the Mac OS X partition. This was the first time I've got a kernel panic at startup.
Fine, I thought it was a mismanipulation when I installed W7. So, I wanted to reinstall SL.
I tried, 2 or 3 times, but I've always had this message while installing "The installer could not copy the necessary support files".
I managed to boot Mac OS in Safe Mode. I tried to installed SL directly from the Safe Mode, and I got another error : "Impossible to read the installation disk".
So I tried to make a UBS Stick bootable image of the SL installation disk : I cannot mount it "checksum error".
I hardly think now that the problem is coming from the RAM, but instead from the SL disk.
The installation disk is new, it was the first time I was using it.
Now, I am able again to boot from the mac os partition without having chaned anythink, but having booted once in safe mo
Guys, could you help my with that ? How can I get a new disk ? How can I be sure that the RAM is OK (W7 is working fine and SL also right now).
    Thanks in advance

Sorry misunderstanding, my bad. By new I meant never used before.
It is the brand new iMac 27" SSD. So it supports up to 16GB of RAM.
I am also sure of the model of RAM I ordered.
I wanted to remove the new intalled RAM, however, I can't : it's way to hard. When I pull the tab, I just slip.
I can boot to the Install DVD (So, SL 10.6.8). I can go up to the beginning of the installation. It evens begins to copy files, and I always get the error at the same moment.
The same thing happens when I try to install SL from the Safe Mode of my existing OS. It begins to copy file until I get "unable to read the disk, bla bla".
I hope it was only a minor disk corruption, but I would like to be sure. How can I test the RAM and the Installation Disk ?
I tried to make an image of the installation disk, but when I try to mount the compressed image, I get a checksum error...
    thanks again for your help

  • Kernel panics on startup on a MB late 2008

    Hi everyone.
After reading dozens of threads about kernel panics I couldn't find any appropriate post.
So you see, I've got a unibody MacBook late 2008 and as the thread name states I'm experiencing kernel panics on startup. The weird thing is, these panics occur totally random and I can't induce them. Usually I have an apple keyboard, apple mouse and a WD 1TB drive (TimeMachine backup) connected via USB plus an external monitor and magsafe power. Even after disconnecting all that stuff I receive kernel panics.
I haven't had any kernel panic during normal operation so far. As soon as I get the system up and running nothing happens. They just keep coming every second or third startup.
There are 9 crash reports in my L/Logs/Diag.Reports. You can see the last kernel panic report here:

I'm not an expert at reading panic logs but nothing you posted jumps out at me. Since you still get the panics with everything disconnected I would try repairing your hard drive with Disk Utility and reinstalling Mountian Lion.

  • 10.6.8 kernel panic at startup (fixed)

**excuse my english since I'm french**
Like a lot of people, I've installed 10.6.8 through software update. And I've experimented kernel panic at startup. So, I unplugged everything (my two USB hubs with multiple peripherals) except the original Apple keyboard and Apple wired mouse. And restarted in safe mode. Downloaded Apple 10.6.8 combo update, install it and restart. Everything went fine. Great.
But as soon as I plugged back my USB hub, kaboom! here's come the Kernel Panic again.
So, one by one, I plug and unplug my peripherals. To discover that my old optical wired two button mouse (love that mouse ;-))) was THE problem. Even when it's plugged directly in one of the USB port on my Mac Pro. I've try with three different optical USB wired mouse, one Logitech, one Dell and one Verbatim (my old mouse): kaboom! Kernel Panic. With my Microsoft optical wireless mouse? No kernel panic. 10.6.8 crashes only with third partys wired mouses, except the Mac wired mouse.
    Voilà.
So, I'm stuck with the old wired Apple Mouse (that I hate). But no more kernel panic.
Hope my story can help someone.
And Apple, I missed my optical two buttons wired mouse. ;-))

I have the same problem, but only on one of the two iMacs that I updated to 10.6.8.
The first installation went smoothly, and I haven't had any trouble with the mouse or anything else on that iMac.  A Samsung color laser printed continues to work just fine.
The second installation seemed to have a hiccup -- after I had authorized the update there was a second update screen.  That sequence finished with a kernel panic, which continued through several attempts until I unplugged the Logitech laser mouse.
That Logitech mouse  works perfectly on the first updated  iMac, and the other Logitech mouse from that computer causes a kernel panic on the troublesome iMac.
I'm now using an Apple bluetooth mouse, which I'm getting used to - but I would still prefer the option of my good old Logitech mouse.
Another problem is that I can't print to a networked Konica-Minolta bizhub C451.  Tried the combo 10.6.8 updater and reinstalled the Konica driver -- but still no dice.

    panic: we are hanging here...
-The PowerBookG4 starts up when selecting the local hard disk via Startup Manager (press and hold Option key); PowerBookG4 starts up when inserting the install disk 1 and selecting the local hard disk via Startup Manager (press and hold C key); PowerBookG4 starts into safe mode (press and hold Option+Shift keys).
I have verified and repaired disk permissions and the disk itself. This behavior occurs consistently with or without external devices connected.
I can work in my applications ok and everything appears to function as expected once I get the PowerBookG4 booted, but I am concerned about how long it may continue to function - got a lot to do!
Advice? very appreciated thank you! -ben

Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html
Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060309075929717
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. Since you've disconnected external devices, USB & Firewire don't appear to be a problem. Are you using an external mouse?
Have you added RAM recently? To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc?
Look at 12-Step Program to Isolate Freezes and/or Kernel Panics

  • Can't get past kernel panics on startup

Like the title says, I'm unable to get past kernel panics on startup.  I know next to nothing about the technical side of computers, so I'll just explain the whole process of what I've gone through.  Earlier today I got a kernel panic after waking my computer from sleep.  I restarted and everything was fine.  I probably should have looked in to the cause of the panic, but I just went on using the computer as normal.  Later, I returned to the computer, woke it from sleep, and got another kernel panic.  I restarted, and my computer got to the Apple logo and gray spinning wheel when it froze.  No kernel panic, just a frozen wheel.  So I shut it down, restarted it again, and this time I got to just a gray screen (I don't remember if the Apple logo had shown up or not, but there was no spinning wheel).  It hung on that screen for a while, then the fans started running like they were trying to take off a jet engine, so I shut it down.  I tried restarting it once more, and it got to the spinning wheel screen when another kernel panic happened.  I restarted the computer, and tried this a few more times, getting kernel panics each time.  So I let it rest.  A few minutes later I tried it again.  This time it got even further, and I was pretty hopeful that I'd at least get the computer running again.  It got past the gray spinning wheel, to the blue screen that usually shows up before the "cosmic wallpaper" and login screen.  At that point it hung on that blue screen, and the jet engine sound started up.  Now I take out my 10.5 instal disc.  I back up with Time Machine, so I'm just going to hope reinstalling and restoring from Time Machine works out.  I stick in my 10.5 disc, hold down the 'c' key and start up the iMac.  Eventually it gets to the spinning wheel screen and a kernel panic.  That's where I am now.  Any help?  I have a big paper due on Tuesday, so there's a ticking clock.
    Thanks a lot
    Mike

Hi - I have a similar problem here, running snow leopard 10.6. I am also not technical.
I went out & left my mac on, and when I got home it had switched itself off and on restart I got to the grey screen + Apple icon.  Unfortunately I have never backed up my data!!  Tried starting in safe mode (holding Shift key) and get the following message every time I try this:
panic (cpu 0 caller 0x560d25): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"APCI\".n" e/SourceCache/xnu/xnu_1504.9.37/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1389

I have tried booting from the Leopard disc but can't do a repair as it doesn't seem that it can find the Mac hard disc.  Have also tried starting holding the <option> key and get a Hardisc icon displayed with an arrow beneath, and when clicked a progress bar appears for maybe 30 seconds, then disappears & it just carries on in grey screen mode with spinning wheet & Apple icon.
I want to know if I just have to concede that I have lost my data and need to reinstall the OS, or it could be worth taking to a Mac repair agent to try to retrieve it

  • I'm getting a kernel panic on startup after restore hd

Long story made short...installed Google Music to use with my new phone...next day Mac running slow, left it running while I was out, came home to frozen screen...booted in safe mode and clicked off everything that was running in background. Tried to reboot and it kept shutting down when reaching grey screen. (I orginally had leopard and upgraded to snow leopard) got my OSX (leopard) install cd and booted to disc, disk utilities and check disc...originally would only let me verify, which failed, then unmounted and was able to get repair disc...unable to repair. I erased hd and then restored from my time machine backup, now when I boot I get kernel panic on startup. I'm running of external hd which I formatted and installed leopard essential software. So my question is, is my HD shot? Are there other step I can take? I can't afford to bring this in to someone. This is most of what my screen says when I boot:
    Panic(cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad): "Process 1 exec of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 8\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504 . 15 . 3/bsd/kern/kern_exec.c.3145
    Debugger called: <painic>
Backtrace (cpu1), Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack)
and the a list of numbers....
any and all help would be appreciated to help me resolve this

    Bump, can anyone help?

  • Constant Kernel Panics on startup on 10.4.7

I had no problems after upgrading to 10.4.7 on my Titanium iBook so I upgraded on my G4 iMac desktop as well.
I had one successful restart under 10.4.7, but on all subsequent attempts, I've gotten kernel panics on startup. with a screen and a half of backtrade and exception state lines, filled with hexadecimal codes.?
Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions as for how best to deal with it?
P.S. I did make a bootable backup of my disk before upgrading, and my first thought is that I should just restore back to 10.4.6 from the backup. The problem, however, is that the backup is on a firewire drive, and I can't figure out how to make the machine boot from the backup. Is there a simple 'button' trick I can use to make it boot from the firewire drive instead of from the internal HD? (Alternately, is there a way I can get my machine to recognize the Firewire drive from system 9.2.2. I have been able to contrive a way to reboot from the internal drive's 9.2.2. folder... but I can't see the firewire drives from it).

    OK: Here's a follow-up:
I tried using the Startup Manager and, to my surprise, that didn't seem to help. It still wasn't recognizing my firewire drive backups as volumes.
I then went to Dr. Smoke's diagnostic list and looked through it. The first step that seemed both relevant and possible to my situation was the suggestion (through a link to a help page) that I reset my PRAM and DVRAM.
So, I went ahead and tried rebooting (in OS X) while holding down option-command-p-r, and the machine booted fine. No kernel panic at all.
I decided to try immediately rebooting into OS-X as per 'normal' (i.e. without holding down option-command-p-r). The kernel panic recurred. Several attempts at rebooting revealed the following: (1) Wiith each attempt to reboot off 10.4.7 on the hard drive while holding down option-command-p-r, I had no problems. (2) With each attempt to reboot from 10.4.7 on the hard drive without holding down option-command-p-r, I got a kernel panic. Hmm.... (That seems significant, but what exactly it means, I don't know.)
I did find out that, if I held down option-command-p-r while rebooting, I was able to boot successfully into 10.4.7 from the hard drive, and that from there, I was able to reboot into with no problem into 10.4.6 from my backup firewire drive (even if I didn't hold down option-command-p-r).
At this point, I'm planning just to restore 10.4.6 to my internal hard drive from my backup, and hope that works. (I'll post and let you know if it does.) However, if the information presented above suggests anything to anyone (e.g. about more specific problems that I should investigate, perhaps with the RAM, I'd be most appreciative to hear your thoughts.).
