Dvd drive came loose

My laptop (Satellite U305-S5077) fell off my desk and now I'm unable to play discs in my cd/dvd player.  If I push in the drive a bit, the light next to the eject button goes on and I'm able to open the drive. However, other than that my computer won't even read the drive much less a cd or dvd.
I have a feeling there is a loose/damaged connection as a result of my clumsiness. The drive is protruding out slightly more than it was before the drop. Is there a way to remove the drive and put it back in? Should I let a professional handle this? Any advice is much appreciated.
Maui

i just got the same problem, my macbook pro is less then a week old and when it spat out a disk it also ripped the protective felt strip from the entrance to the optical drive, i just tore the last little bit off that was attached. these things are really annoying when you try and keep your macbook pro in pristine condition after spending nearly AU $4000 on it. should i take it back to the apple dealer from were i bought it? or just not worry about it.
This is it here...

  • I want to upgrade my G4 cd rom drive to a DVD drive, however...

with the new DVD drive came two gray OS 10.3.5 DVD disks. From my reading around these forums i get the impression that using the gray disks is not recommended. I was wondering why not use them?
And it its important I bought the drive from AllMac.com. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello Again Rioxxx,
"...Mac OS X 10.3 Panther eMac OEM disk only. ... does this OS work in my G4?"
Your Power Mac G4 supports the version Panther 10.3.x, but those are the wrong discs.
    They are Model Specific.
You must use a Full Retail Version of whichever OS X you are installing.

  • DVD from a Hard Drive  Camera.

I wanted some feedback on YOUR best way to make a DVD from a Hard Drive Camera. I have the Sony 60 GB HandyCam. It's great. I have many programs to create a DVD and edit them. Some are Quicktime Pro with MPEG 2 converter to 4 then to Streamclip, CaptyDVD, VisualHub, ImageMixer.
When converting to StreamClip , for instance, which formate is best????
I have found that the QuickTime Pro/2 to 4 converter then into iDVD gives me the best results. Then right to iDVD.
The Visual Hub program is great but it gives me the letter box effect. I rather have the true 16x9 formate.
Any other ideas or programs out there YOU like?
    Thanks in advance, Don
MacBook core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iMac G4 flat panel

now we put the cart before the horse ...
mpegs are not meant for editing, any further processing; mpegs are a delivery- and playback format...
if you like to do editing (adding titles, music, disolves etc), use a recording-device which supports a codec which is MEANT for editing.. as "dv", on miniDV ...
Streamclip support basic editing (e.g. erasing parts)...
and the loss of audio by using Quicktime for convertign mpegs is another cup of tea ...
    nack to your Original Post:
Capty is best in terms of quality, because no triple-conversion is needed, as long as you "burn" videoDVD with Toast or Sizzle ..
Streamclip (+mpeg2 plug-in) is best in terms of "options" ( you can edit AND convert)
DVD2DV is best in terms of usability .. one-click-only
VisualHub is best in terms of flexibility (swiss army knife converter)
ffmpegX + Sizzle is best in terms of cost - free (iLife comes preinstalled)
... and DVD as recording media is NEVER the best, compared to any/most miniDV camcorders... less usabilty (= not supported by iLife, needs additional processes etc), less quality AFTER adding anything/editing/processing, ...
so, back to Square One - get a miniDV for movie making ..

  • Install iTunes 7.6, and loose my DVD Drive after it.

I run: Windows Vista Ultimate PRE-SP1. Lite-ON Blu-Ray DVD Player.
I install iTunes v7.6 and get the following after reboot:
"Warning! iTunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CD's you need to reinstall iTunes."
My DVD drive is no longer recognized by my computer. Windows Hardware says there is a driver error. Re-installation of these Drivers results in same error. Upon removal of iTunes the error magicly dissapears and there is my DVD drive again.
Please Tell me someone knows of a hotfix for this issue! I am missing my iTunes.

No this is an Apple issue. I ran out and bought 4 Mac's laptops last year when I had to buy a "Vista" computer.
Because of my business I have to use PC (software). since I purchased Vista I was unable to use my 3 video pods (my kids and mine). itunes did exactly what you are discribing here. I totally blamed microsoft..
HOWEVER after downloading service pack 1 and purchasing a new iphone 3G it was working like a charm ....NOT a problem. I used "mobile me" to sync my outlook and was happier than I had been in over a year with BOTH my PC and Mac.
After the upgrade last week (I upgraded 8-1-08) my PC sees the CD/DVD drive however itunes is disabling it. I have a ton of software on my PC Office ultimate 07, Photoshop 6 Roxio 10 all of it. NONE of those had updates.
I am NOT happy with the thousands that I have placed into apple the last 6 months. I really thought this was Microsoft...it is not.
I am lucky because I have a Mac Pro to sync my iphone too (even though I am NOT proficent on a Mac yet). I actually signed onto these boards to see if I could run it on Mac since I installed it on PC..
I tried to see if I would downgrade to the previous version ...no luck...apple likes to install as soon as you boot up...I also tried to restore to a previous time (prior to the upgrade) that also didn't work..itunes again downloaded immediatly after a reboot.
Apple needs to get a fix...I was going to automate a business with MACs...I have my kids on both now..I have an appointment with their business sales..
I think I will bring this computer in and tell them we will talk AFTER you fix this simple problem.. I would HATE to lose patients medical records because of a bad download.

  • Problem with DVD drive, please help

Hi people, please read the whole story and give me some advice.
Last Friday, took the train from Stoke on trent to Birmingham to get to Apple at the bullring as the DVD drive is not recognising DVDs. Everytime I put a dvd in, the blank dvd message comes up! They told me they can replace the drive, but it will take a few days unless I pay for Apple pro care, as I needed it done quick, I paid, I roamed around the shops waiting for the phone call that it is ready. After an hour, got a call saying that the NEW DRIVE they have in stock is faulty, so I came back, they told me that they will call me when they get another one in stock. Went back home after having wasted a day in birmingham.
Monday, got a message on my voicemail, the drive is in stock, pop in and we'll replace it. As I was working all week, I thought I'd give them a ring to arrange for the repair on Saturday where they can fit me. I tried to call all week, THE BULLRING STORE DOES NOT ANSWER THEIR PHONES!
So, I popped in today, they said that they cannot do it today as they were busy. I asked to see the store manager and explained to her the situation and how annoying it is not to be able to get in touch with the store. She told me she'll get it done before closing time.Luckily by 2 pm it was ready, picked up , hopped back on the train to stoke. Got home tried a DVD, it works, then suddenly STOPS WORKING.
The Macbook now doesn't recognise the drive at all, and I've got a DVD stuck in it.
I have wasted another day in birmingham + train fares + Apple pro crae (79.99). I am very frustrated, I am now having second thoughts on the quality of apple products. If the matsui drives are crap, why don't they get another manufacturer to make it for them.
I would appreciate your help on what should my next move be, I cannot keep loosing my time like this, I paid good money for this kit and I need it to work.

Have a read of this article. You definantely should be able to get a full refund (whether they will do that is a different matter).
If you don't ask (firmly) then you don't get. A 12 month warranty is there for a reason so use it. I can't believe they've actually charged you for work already within the 12 month period. I have also being trying ot look for an article about claiming unfair travel to and from a shop for repairs but I cannie find it.....
Would you consider asking for a replacment laptop. From what I have read on the forums, if you call apple they will be more likely to help out, maybe give them a try and avoid Birmingham all together.
ps, i'm from Stoke too -Small world eh?

  • Hard drive and dvd drive - simultaneous failure

    Hi
I'm running a 2yr 8 month old PowerPC. G4 1.67ghz with 2gb RAM. Until today, it's been pretty much faultless. I have had issues in the past related to installing updates from Mac. ie. on two separate occasions I took updates only to find that the machine wouldn't re-boot. Issues were resolved using install disks, disk warrior and/or repeated booting.
    Anyway - today:
I installed the update (Security Update 2008-003 (power PC)). Restarted and all was fine. Sometime later, after considerable use, the machine went to sleep. When I tried to wake it it wouldn't do anything. Eventually a blank grey screen came up with the file icon which alternately flashed a question mark and the finder icon.
I looked on these boards for suggestions. The best one seemed to be boot from the install disks. Unfortunately there is already an audio disk in the drive. I looked for suggestions to eject but none worked. Eventually, I plugged in my bootable clone of my harddrive. The machine took matters into its own hands and booted from it.
Once up and running I ran disk utility to check the status of the internal drive. It doesn't come up in the display. Nor does it show on the desktop or the in the finder. Which suggests to me that it's died.
I then looked to see if I could eject the cd from the DVD drive. i found no icon for the cd on the desktop or in the finder. I checked the "about this mac page" and it tells me "No burning device was found." This in turn suggests that the DVD burner has failed along with the hard drive.
My immediate thought would be that both parts have just reached the end of their time and given up the ghost. I'm a bit surprised/suspicious though that they seem to have done so in the same moment. And on the day that I downloaded a Security Update.
Has anyone had a similar problem, if so what did you do? Can anyone suggest anything I may not have thought of to find my missing HD and DVD burner? Would I be best off going to the Mac store in London? Ultimately, is replacing them myself a realistic proposition?
    Help appreciated.
    Ewan

    Thanks Arnie
Have been thinking along those lines. Especially as, when I boot the machine from the external drive, I can hear the DVD drive whirring. So it's clearly not completely dead.

  • DVD Drive won't recognize DVD's or CD's

I just got a new, refurbished Mac Mini today. The DVD Drive will recognize only 1 out of the 3 install disks that came with the system. It tries to initialize 2 out of the 3 and just ejects them about 15 seconds after I put them in. I tried to put a blank CD in and it ejects it as well after about 15 seconds. I called Apple Tech. Support and they had me reset the system by holding down the power button for 10 seconds without any peripherals attached. They also had me try holding down the "Windows" Key, "Alt" Key, "R" Key and then the "P" key upon bootup (I'm using a Windows Keyboard). I couldn't get this to work though probably because I'm using a PS2 keyboard with a USB adapter, even though I can use the keyboard in the Mac GUI. Tech support told me if I can boot up with these 4 keys pressed this works 99% of the time in fixing most problems, but I don't have a USB keyboard yet to try it.
Now I'm downloading all the updates for 10.4.10 to see if that will fix anything per the advice of tech support. Is there anything else I can try before I take it to a local Apple Store?

For now can I install the Leopard Upgrade from a DVD drive on a PC on my network? Is it better to copy the whole disk from the network DVD Drive to my local drive and install it from there?

  • Need to upgrade from 10.1.5 to tiger, don't have dvd drive

I only have a cd drive in my old imac. Would like to upgrade to Tiger and add an airport card. Do I need to buy the full version or just an upgrade cd? Is it possible to put an airport card in this imac? Should I add more memory too? I hear it is pretty easy to add memory, but what about the airport card? It has the original operating system that came with the computer and it has never been upgraded. This computer is the white pod style. Thanks!

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Which exact iMac is it & RAM, HD, etc.?
No upgrade disks unless you can find the right Machine specific one on eBay or such, even the Black Retail version is hard to come by, then you'd need a DVD drive or another PPC Mac around to use Target Mode.
Better than an expensive/slow Airport card if you can even find them, Yes, it can be done, but you might consider one of these with a USB extension cable...

A USB cable will give you much better placement options, and they have better range/speed than Airport cards by far.

  • Need help with my CD DVD Drive

I'll apologize in advance, because I know this message is going to be confusing, but if you can stick with me to the end, you will understand why.
Basically, the problem is that although my Powermac G4 can read almost any commercial disk, it is unpredictable when it comes to those I have burned. But here is what's going on:
    1) Until recently, I was plugging along quite happily with 2 Macs: (a) a PowerMc G4, purchased some time around 1999 and (b) an iMac G3 , which I bought about 2 years later. Also had (and still have) a Mac Notebook, which I bought around 2003-04, but until recently had only used once or twice.
    2) Both the Notebook and G3 were running on OS 10.2.8, and the G4 on OS 9.2, which enabled me to continue to work with older files that I still rely on. The G3 and G4 are also networked via ethernet.
Hope I haven't lost you yet, because this is where things get confusing . . .
    3) All 3 of the above Macs came with CD drives, but no two are alike. The G4 has a Matshita CD/DVD drive and software version 1.4.5., but no burner. The iMac G3 reads and burns disks, but I can't tell you the software version, because, as I'll explain next, I can't see it at this moment. But it does not read DVDs. The Notebook has a read-only drive (version 1.4.8).
    4) All was well until about 8 weeks ago, when the optical drive in the G3 started sticking and finally died with a disk (that belonged to a client) in the drive. After much panic, I managed to retrieve the disk, but meanwhile had learned that the problem probably was due to the treads on the slot drive having worn out, and spoke with several repair shop techs who said it would cost in excess of $300 to repair.
Meanwhile, I had discovered the just-released Mac/ Intel, fell in love with it and decided, "What the heck, I deserve it." So I bought one and immediately started to assemble old data strewn across both the G4 and G3 for burning. At this point, I've been at it for several weeks, but right now am unable to view info because it is connected to the Mac/Intel via firewire.
Since the drive on my old G3 was kaput, I tested the first disk I burned on the G4 and breathed a sigh of relief when, after a relatively long boot up time, it finally popped up on the desktop. When the next disk I burned failed to show up at all, I suspected it might be a bad disk (even though it was a major brand name), so immediately burned another from a new pack of disks. If failed to load, too. But when I tried them on my Notebook, both appeared on the desktop within seconds.
So my question now, is where do I go from here?
Since the G4's ability to read burned CDs had always been flaky, I had figured it might have something to do with the speed of the burner. Now I'm not sure — especially since I burned the latest disks at a slow speed, and as I've descrbed, the results are still erratic. (i.e., At least one of them works on all 3 computers, including my new Mac/Intel but not the G3 with the broken drive . .. and the others only work on the Notebook and Mac/Intel.)
I've also wondered if there's been a software upgrade for the CD/DVD drive on the G4 that will work with OS 9.2. (Really don't want to upgrade that system yet . . especially since I'd like to continue using some of my older apps, which probably will not work on my newest Mac.) For the same reason (i.e., concern that it might prevent old apps from working), I've always ignored the automatic software update announcements that pop up on my screen each month — but when I checked the Apple site earlier this evening I couldn't find any anyway.
I'm hoping someone out there will know what I'm talking about and have a suggestion or two that I can try.
    Thanks for your attention.
    cs

    Thanks, Joseph . . .
Meant to reply yesterday, but I was busy all day, working to save and burn those files. But I did want you to know that I took your advice and picked up a Memorex laser lens cleaner disk. Contrary to the salesman's insistence when I asked, it really did seem designed more for drives that play mainly music CDs than graphics ( the only thing that interests me) . . . because tracks 5-14 all dealt with testing sound and there was no way for me to stop the process (as the narrator suggests) because that's not an option on my Mac.
Consequently, I only ran it once. But I did notice a definite improvement in how quickly icons for my burned disks appeared on my G4 desktop. Only problem was that they would not open on that computer although they do on my iBook, which also has PM 6.5 installed. And while they also show up on my Mac/Intel, it can't read them bcause it does not recognize the application — and according to what I've hust learned, NEVER will. (A warning to anyone else with a stockpile of PM documents they hope to play: Better find and learn another page layout application future Macs will read and start converting those docs asap . . . or at least before your older machine dies.)
Also tried copying the primary document (the other files just contain support data , such as graphic/photos, etc.) — but that failed, too.
So it looks like I'm back to square #1 — but still thinking the problem might somehow be related to the size of the document (139MB) even though my G4 has 920 MB ROM (vers. 8.3.1) and total hard drive space of 95 GB . . . Long ago, I also increased the recommended memory for PM from 5,200k to 50,000k. The only thing that makes me question my premise re: size is that the doc opens without difficulty on my little iMac, which only has a ROM CD drive.

  • DVD Drive slow all of a sudden?

Hey guys, I noticed the other day when I went to install Windows 7 64 Bit (burnt from an ISO I had, it was legally obtained through a progarm at my school) on my MBP (after installing 8GB of RAM) that it took forever to load the installer,  today I went to install a program on a CD (Not burnt) in Windows and I double clicked the disk, and it never came open, then when I ejected the disk, the installer came up, but of course I couldn't proceed due to the disk being out. So I booted into Snow Leopard and put the same disk in, this time I was able to view it in Finder, so I stuck a USB drive in and copied the contents (600MB) over to the USB Stick, and it took about 10 minutes, which seems like a lot, and the drive never spun up super fast, just kinda spun average speed. It takes forever to boot off of any CD/DVD besides the OS X DVD (that includes Windows 7 Pro x86, Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, and Ubuntu 11.04 64 Bit.) is it possible that my drive is on it's way out? I have Applecare so if it is i'm not too worried (granted I do have to drive 30 miles to the nearest store) or is it possible there is a firmware issue that is messing with the disk drive? Thanks!

Booting from CD/DVD always takes some time.
How about trying to copy an MP3 CD onto your HDD & see how long it takes to perhaps rule out the DVD drive being defective?

  • DVD drive broken, Mac G5 having kernel panics at startup

After nearly 5 years of steady, trouble free use, my G5 iMac started acting up a few days ago. I get what I think are kernel panics at startup. I am usually able to get it running after a few restarts but I am worried. My DVD drive became unreliable a month after my 1 year warranty expired. For some reason it won't start up with the install disks that came with the cpu but will bootup from my DiskWarrior DVD. I tried rebuilding the directory with DiskWarrior but I got the blue screen when it was almost finished. I've decided to do and Archive and install because I'm sure my problem stems from programs I installed recently. Is it possible to do the Archive and Install from my Intell Powerbook which is running the same version software. I've tried it several times, inserting the iMac install disk on my PB with my iMac connected in Target Disk mode, but I keep getting the message that the software can't be installed on this computer (the PB). Is there another way I can perform an A&I, I don't have enough space on my iDisk to use SuperDuper to create a disk image. I'm almost at the panic stage here since I use my computer for work and I'm afraid it won't start up at all at some point.
I've performed all the usual steps, repair permissions and used Disk Utility on my Firewire connect PB to repair the disk. One odd thing is FontExplorerX all of a sudden quit on me two days ago (which has never happened in the 4 years I've used it) and told me to download it again, which I did.
Message was edited by: e. jones

Hi e. jones, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Other way around, with the iMac's Install Disc in the PB, boot the PB into T mode, boot the iMac with the Option key held down, wait for the Install Disk in the PB to show up as a boot option on the iMac.
But I think you have more serious problems. And, first you need to move some things off the iMac to make room for an A&I, you really need an external FW Drive right away.

  • Optical drive, camera and bluetooth problems with Acer Aspire 7520

    Hello everyone
First, my DVD drive just stopped working, it's not being recognized by Arch it seems. This has happened before a few times, but it suddenly started to work. I can open the tray manually, and when I insert a DVD, you can see the led blinking and drive does start to spin, but thats all. I've tried removing and reloading cdrom module with no success. Also, there was a /dev/sr0 before, now it's gone.

Now, the camera issue is a bit different. It worked before with no problems. But now, when I start guvcview, it opens it's main window, and a second window that usually show picture from camera, just appears for a moment and disappears. The led next to my camera turns on, and stays that way. Also, yesterday when I was trying to test the camera, guvcview stuck in a uninteruptible state, so I couldn't kill him in any way. Even after I close guvcview, the camera led is still on, but he is not among active processes. Although in the guvcview output below it says that the device is in use, I don't know how, because I rebooted my laptop and then I tried to run it.
This is what guvcview outputs in console after I start and then close it:

  • Getting 10.4 onto a G3 iMac w/o DVD drive

So I'm having some Tiger taming trouble.
I've been quite happy with my G4 iBook since I bought it; Tiger came with it, and I haven't made the Leopard leap, so it's running 10.4.11 with all current updates. I still have my old G3 iMac (Summer 2001 "Kiva") on my desk at home, though, and still use it happily; it's running Panther 10.3.9, and is otherwise happy. Up until recently, I had no trouble in keeping the two machines in synch through iSynch and my .mac account.
Then some of the post-Leopard updates came along, and now things between my Tiger apps and my Panther apps don't synch correctly, if at all. As I understand it, this is a software generation issue. The solution to this seemed obvious: just bring my iMac up to the same Tiger OS version as my iBook. I did a little research, and 10.4.11 should run fine on my iMac. Problem solved.
Not quite. The copy of Tiger I have to start with is the 10.4.2 that came with my iBook. Those discs are DVDs, and the iMac doesn't have a DVD drive. After a couple of work-around experiments, I figured this way of getting things to run: took my portable Firewire 400 G-Drive mini and copied the Install Disc 1 onto it, then booted the iMac from that drive. Installer opened fine, then told me I couldn't install this software onto this machine. Hmmm.
Being something of an empiricist at heart, I tried an experiment. Set my main external HD (another Firewire 400 G-Drive) as the destination disc, and installed 10.4.2 onto it from the Install Disc 1 DVD itself through the iBook. Fine. Set that drive as the boot disc for the iMac and started up the iMac in 10.4.2 perfectly fine, except that it treated everything as though it was a clean install on an empty machine (and that I don't particularly want my external HD to be the boot disc for the iMac).
Still, I know 10.4.2 runs fine one the iMac, so it seems obvious that I CAN load that software onto that machine. Or can I?
Okay, the answer to my problem may be quite simple. Is it that the Installer itself won't load the OS onto the iMac off of the DVDs because they're OEM bonded to the iBook they came with? If so, why did it install onto an external HD with no problems? And, more to the point, is there some other work-around that will let me get Tiger onto my iMac?
Yes, yes. I know this wouldn't be an issue if I'd bought a copy of Tiger for the iMac back when it was available. But pairing Panther and Tiger wasn't an issue back then, either. I'm looking for someplace online that might still be selling Tiger, but without any luck.
Frankly, I just want my two Macs to sych as cleanly as they used to.

    Tiger is on DVD.
Here are images of the Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD.
The discs should look exactly like the images in those links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on it.

If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, Once installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
The posted RAM System Requirement, for all versions of OS X, is the bare minimum.
For optimum performance, more is recommended.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.

  • IMac G5 bluetooth + airport + power supply problems - oh and the dvd drive

Yeah, seems like a lot is going wrong with my mac lately. I bought the iMac G5(no isight) model last year around july. I had some power issues (i.e. leaving the house with it turned on to come home and find it off) For the last year though that was all that was wrong. Once I had to reinstall OS X because it would not find the OS X harddrive during one of these power losses, but that was it.
Then about two weeks ago, I came home to a turned off iMac. I thought the power had gone out in my apartment, but the clocks were all right, and to my surprise the iMac would not turned on. Because I am not under warranty I searched online and found an extended exchange program for my emc model. (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/powersupply/repairextension/) I made an appt at the apple store and they replaced the power supply.
I got the machine back two nights ago and my bluetooth hardware wasn't recognized. And I now had a new "ink" system preference panel in the hardware section which aparently is some sort of handwriting recognition tablet. It ticked me off, but I just wanted to use my computer.
Well today I came home from work and my computer was acting funny. Everywhere I clicked brought up dashboard. This had never happened before and I had no choice but to force a shutdown. Powered it back up and poof, there goes my airport card. No hardware recognized. Now I have a 25 ft cable running the floor of my apartment. This was cause enough to call apple. I was told to make another apointment to bring the computer in. The guy made it sound like it was no big deal to lug a 30 lb bulky computer 40 miles and through a crowded mall. He also made no promises that the repairs would be covered under the exchange program.
I just wanted to hear any suggestions before I decide whether or not its worth it to bring in the computer. Nothing shows up in system profiler under bluetooth or airport. Should I just lie to the "genius" and tell them that my computer still shuts down randomly? I think that way they would at least replace the logic board (which I think is the problem) before telling me to sell my kidney and pay for repairs. I've tried reseting the SMU, and I looked at the bluetooth and airport cards to see if they had been accidently disconnected during the PS replacement. They are actually screwed into the logic board so I think their connections are efficient.
Oh and about the DVD drive. I have to use two cd's in order to burn a single disc. The first disc I put in the drive NEVER works. It spins for about 30 seconds then starts buzzing like blender and spits the cd back out. The second blank disc I put in USUALLY works, but sometimes it takes three discs. This problem has always been there since day 1, but I don't burn enough cd's for it to be an issue.
Thank you for listening to my gripes. I really don't think I'll make the mistake of buying the first issue of a model.
    iBook G4 900mghz, iMac G5 20" 2.0 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

OK, first thing -to restore your bluetooth, shut down, unplug for a few minutes and then reboot. Thay usually brings the BT back. You should also repair permissions. Reset your SMU nd your PRAM as well.
Try those four things and please post back,
