DVD drive compatability

The existing factory DVD drive in my G4 tower has failed & I need to replace it. I've been warned that most drives do not work reliably with iAPPS (iDVD5). I also use Toast 6.1.1 and DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2 (yes, all 3 for different purposes). I'm looking for stability and reliability at a fair price in a dual layer DVD drive. Comments/advice greatly appreciated.
thanks

Gary,
I remember you e-mailing me to help me install the 109 (the face plate thing),
Oh yes.
I'm surprised that you didn't install both internally... I'd suggest seeking Verbatim DVD-R and try the 109. TDK and Memorex have bad track records here. I haven't "sprayed" this here lately, so here goes:
My reliable DVD-Rs have been: Apple 4X (Maxell ID), Verbatim 4X, RiTek 4X, RiData 8X white inkjet printable, and PioData 8X white inkjet printable. The RiData and PioData check out to be RiTek-made.
Verbatim is reliable and can be found in many stores in the USA. They even make a special grade for medical records.
You can buy the RiTek, RiData, and PioData at:
http://www.shop4tech.com/
Verbatim may be available in your neighborhood store or:
http://www.taperesources.com/
Apple brand can be purchased from the Apple online store.
You can check the manufacturer's ID by using DVD Media Inspector: http://homepage.mac.com/raktajino/dvdmediainspector/dvdmediainspector.html
You could wade through this: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
From that database: Five brands and who actually manufactures the DVDs:
TDK = TDK, RITEKG04, RICOHJPN, MXL, CMC, MCC
Memorex = CMC, RICOHJPN, PRODISC, INFODISC
Imation = CMC, MCC, Ritek, Prodisc
Sony = MCC 01RG20, Sony04D1, TYG01
Fuji = FUJIFILM02..4X, FUJIFILM03..8X, ProdiscF01..8x, ProdiscS03..4x, PVC001001..2x, RITEKG03..1x, TAIYOYUDEN..2x, TYG01..4x, TYG02..8x
This can result in "mixed" experiences...
My friend used TDK on his Mac and it wouldn't play in his 5 year old Sony DVD player. All of mine play OK in his "antique" Sony. Update: He finally gave up on that antique and bought a Sony DVPNS775V http://ww1.onecall.com/PID_22332.htm which also plays double-layer DVD+R.

  • External DVD drives compatibility

Is there an external DVD drives compatibility list anywhere?

    Go to Lacie's site

Remember that almost all external drive manufactures make them for both Mac and PC. I suggest you make a Google search.

  • External dvd drive compatibility

I have an HP branded external cd/dvd drive, P/N QA846 AV (the number on the palstic bubble-wrap shipping bag.)
Question: Is this drive compatible with the MAC OS?
Just in case i go to a MAC--if I buy a new computer,Win 8 is so unloved I may as well learn a whole new OS and the Mac Book Air is looking good to me.
    Thanks for answers..Barsac

    Hi Xardas,
Yes, I've tested other USB devices. All of the following USB devices work fine:
    * iPhone 3G
    * usb memory sticks
    * Western Digital My Book external hard drive (separate power source)
    * usb keyboards & mouses
I've just tried updating the chipset. But still no luck :-( Samsung dvd drive still continuously alternately connect & disconnect as generic "USB Storage" device. It doesn't stay connected long enough for me to find out the driver details.
    Anyone have any other suggestion?
    Thanks,

  • USB DVD drive compatability?

Is it possible to hook up a USB based external DVD drive to the Time Capsule USB port or via a USB hub into the TC USB port?
I'm assuming the DVD drive will either require it's own power supply or pick
up power from the USB hub.
    Suggeted drives is any?

Hello Klanky. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Sorry, but no. The AirPort/TC's USB port does not support USB DVD drives.

  • Blue Ray Disk drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro

Ok, I'll make this an official question, where might I find info on BDR drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro, etc? I'm a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be much info available.
I can always use my Pioneer BDR-202 with a windows box, I have several, but I'm trying to get AWAY from them.
Any thoughts, links, etc. welcome, thanks
    Les

Blu-ray offers a level of interacivity that is not possible with DVDs, so it isn't just an different drive that you are getting with Blu-ray. Seeing how Apple didn't upgrade DVD SP with the new FCP Suite 2, it is reasonable to assume they are working on a separate Blu-Ray Studio Pro, that is going to be completely different than DVD SP. Adobe Encore's support for Blu-Ray is extremely buggy, so obviously moving from DVD programming to Blu-Ray programming isn't just a simple tweak to the code.
Apple doesn't pre-announce software they are working on so this is all guess work, but it is reasonable to assume that they are working on a Blu-Ray programming application. Be patient. Do you really have the money to burn on the bleeding edge of new technology? A single Blu-Ray burnable disc sells for $20. Two months ago the exact same disc sold for $45. Prices will continue to fall as things stablize.

  • Compatable DVD Drive w/DVD Studio Pro 4

Does anyone have a list of compatable dual layer dvd drives that DVD Studio Pro 4 supports. I have a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-111D. And my DVD SP 4 doesn't recognize it when I try to format/build/burn a dvd. Anyone got any info on this problem.
(I am able to burn dvds with Toast, so my Mac recognizes it, but just not Studio Pro 4.)

Update to Tiger, and it shouldn't be a problem.
10.2 is nearly three OS version old.
    Otherwise try patchburn.de

  • Tecra A8-EZ8312 DVD Drive Replacement Compatability??

    Hi All..
Working on a clients Tecra A8-EZ8312 to replace the dead DVD drive.
For whatever reason Toshiba apparently is hardware specific?
What's so special about the DVD Drives that the Bios wont recognize a basic DVD replacement Drive?
Does anyone know what drives are compatable with the Tecra?
Please don't answer with "Call Toshiba for a replacement drive".  There's a better answer out there.
    Anyone have experience with this?

  • Stuck: Need Disk repair but DVD drive dead and only have USB 1

[1 Ghz flat-panel iMac with USB 1 ports (no USB 2) and also Firewire 400]
I noticed a strange discrepancy (small but concerning) between the size of a folder on hard drive (folder of all mp3's with no subfolders) and the backup of the same folder on a mounted thumb drive.
(The size difference was not due to any invisible .DS_Store files and both folders are displayed in List view format.)
    Disk Utility reports three things:
    1. Incorrect number of thread records
    2. Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    3. Checking volume information.
Volume free block count",0)   [I might have mangled this line]
(It should be 13438611 instead of 13437937)
Here is the GOOD (but these are useless as explained under the "Bad"):
    - I have a Tiger 10.4 boot DVD for a repair ==>but see below
    - I also have a Disk Warrior disk (never used)
    Here is the BAD:
    - My built-in optical drive [Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105] is -- I now discover - defunct and DEAD - it does not run the Tiger Boot DVD (in pristine shape).
    - I bought an external SuperDrive (unopened) but I believe no boot from USB 1 is possible in PowerPC so a SuperDrive with USB 1 is useless.
    Questions:
1.) Is there any way to boot from some external source (optical drive is DEAD) to run Disk Utility and/or Disk Warrior? -- I see none in this case! (gulp).
2.) More importantly (and this is my fundamental concern): Do the three Disk Utility hard drive issues constitute any direct threat to the integrity of my files?
I have almost everything backed up to duplicate thumb drives over these many months as standard practice.
Are these Disk Utility errors fully isolated to hard drive directory-keeping...or do these directory damage errors pose the possibility of mangling or harming my files or their metadata (filesize, etc.).
Put another way, when files are backed-up from a hard drive under the Disk Utility reports above, do they remain unharmed and undamaged by the situations reported by Disk Utility?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Jeff and Michael,
Thank you both for your generous and thoughtful input.
Michael: As I slept on it overnight, the exact same idea occurred to me of trying a Target Mode to the iMac from my Lion MacbookPro (I have it but stupidly have yet to use it much!).
I did buy a Firewire 800 (MBP) to Firewire 400 (iMac) adapter cable a few months ago!
CONCERN: Would there be potential compatibility issues or risks in running Lion 10.7's Disk Utility against the hard drive of the old OSX 10.4 iMac in Target Disk Mode?
==> Assuming an "it's ok" answer to the Target Disk question, would the majority of users agree that the Target Disk Mode would be more prudent than running:
fsck -fy   in Single User Mode
I have never done fsck -fy before especially because I was under the impression there were issues with Journaled drived but from what I have read today...it looks ok to do)
Jeff: Can't thank you enough for the reference to the OTW DVD drive. I might first invest $10 in one of those DVD lens cleaner disks that I've read about. It's probably not the issue or else why would the drive read commercial Music cds perfectly well!
    Thanks,
    Bilil

  • Satellite A - CD/DVD drive does only read CD's

I'm abit confused at this situation. My CD/DVD drive reads CD's but does not read DVD's. I dont know if I have to reinstall the driver for the CD/DVD or does it need replacing.
    Please can someone help.

Try removing the CD/DVD Filters from the Registry.
When CD/DVD related software is installed (such as iTunes, Nero, virtual CD software), they install filters into the registry, which can cause compatibility problems.
    1) Run Regedit (Start -> Run -> Regedit)
    2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot.
If your CD/DVD programs stop working, you will need to reinstall them (preferably with an updated version).
This utility can remove the filters for you:
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/bulletins/su2065061/RmvFltrs.exe
If thats no good, then you may need to replace the DVD Drive.

  • DVD drive replacement on Satellite A100-646

    Hi all,
I want replace the DVD drive on my laptop. (I have many problems never solved)
Do you know if exist a list of compatibility model for the A100-646?
    Model to suggest me?
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi!
In your case I would only choose a DVD drive from the list of the user manual. Otherwise the drive could not work and/or recognized.
By the way, if you have lost your user manual you can download it on the Toshiba website:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com
You can also look on eBay for a second hand drive. Maybe there you can find a good offer.

  • Trying to install iwork '09 from dvd on new imac with no dvd drive.....iwork is brand new (bought off ebay) in unopened box....I have at my disposal an older imac with dvd drive and a 16GB thumb drive...what is best way to load iwork on the new imac?

bought my mom a new imac this xmas...didn't realize it has no dvd drive....just picked up a new unopened version of iwork '09 for her to use off of ebay....need to get it loaded on the new dvddriveless imac......I have an imac at my house with a drive and a thumb drive i could bring over to her house if I could somehow burn an image of the iwork dvd on the thumb drive...is this possible?  is there a better solution other than buying an external dvd drive?

First use Disk Utilty to make a disk image of the iWork disc on your iMac. Then there are two easy ways to install on your mothers new iMac. One is to copy to your USB thumb drive, visit your mother and install from the thumb drive. The other is to use a free upload and download service like www.wetransfer.com. Upload the .dmg disk image via www.wetransfer.com, then your mother downloads and installs. After installation you'll need to update iWork for Mountain Lion compatibility.

  • Can I install Tiger using an external DVD drive?

My PowerBook is being repaired and I have to use an older G4/733 tower (OS 9.2; CD/zip drives only) from 2001 ASAP. I purchased Tiger and now need to load it, along with the new software. Rather than purchasing an internal dvd drive, can I buy and external dvd drive to install Tiger/new software? I've seen some posts that say "no" and others that say yes, as long as its firewire, not USB. In looking at external drives, I've seen some compatibility requirements that say OS X as the minimum. Some places like CDW and the Apple store don't seem to have an answer for me. Does anybody here know? thanks!
    Bob
    PowerPC G4   Mac OS 9.2.x

Internal drives are much cheaper; you can get a DVD burner for under $40 online, vs. well over a $100 for an external, which may or may not boot your specific system.
The NEC ND-3550A or Pioneer DVR-110D will both boot the OS installer DVD when using the "C" Key, or from Startup Disc...
In a QS, you just have to remove the drive tray faceplate before installing the drive; This Apple Article has clear diagrams of the replacement process.

  • Why no sound from DVD drive H/Phone sockets ?

    Hello again folks,
Just a little niggle here. I have just noticed that I am getting no sound from my 2 DVD Drive front headphone sockets. One is an MSI the other a LiteOn, both have Headphone sockets and volume controls but not a sound issues forth, even though i have no probs getting sound from my mobo audio outs and the S bracket. Any idea of which box i haven't ticked ??

Interisting case, it must be a compatibility issue.
Test it with other DVD movies, run it with different software, i.e QuickPlay, Windows Media Player, VLC etc.
