DVD drive could not be found

Put DVD into drive, nothing happens. Went to HD applications, clicked on DVD player and got "initialization error" a valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]. Anyone know of a fix for this?

I keep getting this message as well. I have an NEC DVD-RW nd 2500a drive via firewire on my G4 APG 400 mac. I have toast 8.0; I have iTunes 8.0; I have patchburn installed. Drive will play cd's; will recognize commercial DVD's (but won't play them)
System profiler recognizes the drive:
_NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A:
Firmware Revision: 1.06
Interconnect: FireWire
Burn Support: Yes (Vendor Supported)
Profile Path: /Library/DiscRecording/DeviceProfiles/PatchBurn-necdvdrwnd2500a.drprofile
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: No
I can't get it to burn a dvd disc or play one. I'm trying to burn data discs for back up.
When I went to iTunes (which patchburn said should at least recognize dvd's) It doesn't give the option to burn data discs anymore. ( I went to iTunes help about burning DVD's and it said to goe to iTunes preferences and under advanced select "burn". That option is nowhere to be found in iTunes 8! I can't use iDVD because that has a minimum cpu speed of 733. Toast "should" recognize and burn, but when ever I load in a black disc it ejects it.
Anyone have the answer?

  • Error message in iDVD '08 - A valid DVD drive could not be found

I did the basic updates that always pop up and this error appeared the same day when I went to go use my dvd player (that I use on a daily basis and never had a problem with till now); "A valid DVD drive could not be found. I'm running on an iMac 10.4.11. The dvd player no longer works after I did the update in the morning. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Not clear whether you are talking about the Superdrive or the DVD Player application, but either way, this has nothing to do with iDVD!
When you updated (and you don't say which updates) did you repair permissions both before and after?
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

I would suggest you do so now, then restart your mac.

  • DVD Player installation error A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]

My iMac has an external "superdrive" and I can't play files .dvdmedia.  On opening the DVD Player I get this message:  There was installation error  A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]
This sent an error message to Apple when I click the OK button.
I have tried to relinstall the DVD player.app from the SnowLeopard disc, but this app was not on the list for custom install.  I have repaired permissions, no help! I have shut down and waited several minutes and restarted, no help.

My continued frustration with this problem lead  me to an archived discussion https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2020977?start=0&tstart=0  This lead me to beleive I need to use the reset password to fully repair my permissions as contained there.  Also while booted in the install disc, I performed a Repair Disc on the StartUp disc.
After all this, when I restarted, the DVD Player was able to play DVDmedia files completely.
So I quess I solved my own problem.

  • Help please! error code:  a valid dvd drive could not be found  [-70012]

    Hi,
Although I am able to play cds and bootable discs, I am unable to play dvds on my LaCie d2 DVD-RW Firewire Drive. I get an error code:
a valid dvd drive could not be found -70012
Is anyone able to help? I did see one other post listed with this error code, but that person's results seem to be no longer valid, with outdated links for patches.
    Thanks,
    George

It's possible that you caused some damage by not "properly" doing the firmware update, but drives with bad firmware typically just don't work, period. Unfortunately, LaCie does not keep the older firmware posted on their site so that you could 'back-flash' the drive to an earlier firmware revision and then re-apply the updated firmware.
If you have access to a PC that you could put the drive into (as in, removed from the LaCie external enclosure) and know the drive type (the NEC ND-35xx is the most common) you could find older firmware and flashing utilities for the PC, flash the drive to one of those and then drop it back into the LaCie enclosure and flash it back to the current LaCie firmware. No guarantees this will work, though, and you may end up with a totally dead drive.

  • Valid DVD Drive could not be found

Had this problem for a whle. After switching on my Mac and leaving it for a while the DVD drive disappears and will not eject or even open up the tray. checking the system profiler shows "no burning device was found" and trying to play a DVD comes up with "no valid DVD could be found". I have the latest updates and firmware upgrades. Any ideas anyone?
    G5 1.6GHz2GB SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks for the reply.. yes switching off and on again does normally fix the problem but only for a while. Hard drive is not set to "put the hard disk to sleep when possible". I even wondered if the display going to sleep might have been the problem but changing that to leave the display on all the time did nothing. It's like the computer forgets it has a DVD drive after a while

Is there any solution for this common, long-lasting issue with Lion ?
After my slot-drive decided to go into early retirement, I hooked up a enternal Samsung drive SE-S084F, using both USBs. That was working fine under Snow Leopard and still does for music or data CDs, but returns with the above error with any DVD. Any idea how to get this fixed ? thnx a lot.

I have the same problem on a 3 week old 1.67Ghz 15. The #$%&@% thing took in the DVD disc and would not mount it, Sytem Profiler doesn't recognize the optical drive, DVD player shows 70012 error, initialization failure. What a piece!
Apple Support was nasty, I just purchased a Dual-Core and they wouldn't replace this machine, telling me I didn't buy it direct from Apple, so Tough Luck Stupid!
Apple Corporation blows. No wonder they put all their advertising in music players for kids. Paid $2400 plus AppleCare for this??? Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice, shame on me, I suppose...

what do i have to do to watch dvd on my eMac?

    it appears i have a "HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8240B"
    That's not a DVD drive.
    so i just ordered a "BLACK PIONEER DVR-111D 16X

    should that fix my problem?
    Yes it will.

Why does the USB DVD player/burner not work under Mavericks when it worked on a much older 2Core Duo Mac running Lion? Why is there no support for this item sold in an Office Depot Store? You can not get any more plain vanilla hardware than that.

  • I removed my optical drive because i added an ssd hard drive. when i plug in the dvd to usb it will not play from the macbooks dvd program. the error message is there was an initialization error, a valid drive could not be found.

I can go into disk utility and see the optical drive and mount what ever cd is in the drive and quicktime will play it. but i would like to have the dvd program recognize the optical drive and open what ever is in it.

Freakin amazing! I installed a new 1TB Samsung SSD in my main hard drive slot and moved my old hard drive into my DVD slot and moved my DVD to an external DVD case and it would never work with movies, only software disks. I have Late 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks with 1TB Samsung SSD and a 512GB HDD in the DVD slot with my DVD in an OWC external DVD case.
I tried this trick but at first, this did not work because OxED was saving the new file as a text file and not a unix file. I was perplexed until I read the comments below the article and found the tip to use Terminal to change the saved file to a Unix file. I have never used Terminal before and I had no clue what I was doing, but I just followed the steps to a T and it worked. It took two tries with Terminal.
The comment mentioned "Code:" so I typed that along with the rest and it didn't work. I tried it again and this time just typed
chmod +x (with a space after the x) then dragged and dropped the saved dvd file from my Desktop into Terminal and hit enter. Worked great. Thank you. I have my DVD player back.
I also had to play around with some permissions and I had to remove the original file completely from the "A" folder, before I dropped the new file back in.
Took a little work, but I am back up and running. Thanks to all who contributed to this and yet OWC definitely needs to have all this in their manual or even provide a disk or software download that does this automatically.
Here is the trick: http://macenstein.com/default/2011/07/how-to-get-your-external-super-drive-worki ng-in-lion/
Be sure that the new file saves as a Unix file. If it doesnt save as Unix, you will need to:
    Open Terminal.
    Type:    chmod +x
…with a space at the end (and do NOT press enter yet).
Then, drag the saved file you want to change from whereever it is saved and drop it on top of the Terminal window. The file path and filename should automatically fill in (and you should ensure that there’s a space between “+x” and the file path).
    Press enter.

  • I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library.  When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found".  need help

I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library.  When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found".  But when I have my external hard drive plug in the song will play with no problem.  What do I need to do to play my music without having the external harddrive plug in ????????  Please help

Because the location for each song in your library is on your hard drive.  If the hard drive isn't there, how can iTunes play it?
You'll have to move/copy the music from your hard drive to your computer's hard drive.
Basically, EASIEST way to do all this, if you don't care about your play counts, etc...
-Delete EVERYTHING from iTunes, so that your library is now empty.
-Go to "Advanced" inside of the "Preferences" window, found in the "Edit" drop-down.  You can also access Preferences by pressing Ctrl+, (Press Ctrl and the comma key)
-Change your iTunes Media Folder Location to something simple, but on your computer. I use C:/iTunes.  Make sure "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy files to...." are both checked.  You can close Preferences now.
-Now, drag and drop your music from your hard drive into your iTunes library.  iTunes will automatically add the music to your library, as you would expect, and also creates a copy of each file to place into that iTunes Media Folder you just created.
    Shouldn't have any more problems...

  • I have a new hard drive as my old one crashed. Everything seemed to transfer fine except for my entire iTunes library. It shows all of my old songs, but when I click on one it states "the song could not be used as the original file could not be found

I have a new hard drive as my old one crashed. Everything seemed to transfer fine except for my entire iTunes library. It shows all of my old songs, but when I click on one it states "the song could not be used as the original file could not be found.would you like to locate it".
Either how do I locate it, and I've tried every trick I know, or how do I restore all of my songs from one of two sources. I have my old hard drive backedup on an external drive which should have all of my songs, and I have most of my songs on my old iPhone 3S which I'm using as a backup iPod.

The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place. In the case of a library moved from one system to another there are also potential permissions issues. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

  • I can't get dvds to play "There was an initialization error. A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]  Anybody know how to resolve this?

I can't get dvds to play and, instead, get "There was an initialization error.  A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]"  I went in for a Genius appt Friday and it played for the tech...but now I'm back home (one and a half hours from the store) and I'm getting the error message again when I try to load a dvd.  Any recommendations?

    Hello, try this...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Reboot... any change?

  • I recently transferred my itunes library to an external hard drive. Now I get the error message 'the original file could not be found. Could you like to locate it' when i try to open songs. My iPod syncs ok.

I recently tranferred my iTunes library to an external hard drive. Now I cannot open songs and get the error message ' The song "***" could not not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it'. This applies to all 9742 songs!!. My iPod still syncs ok, but I can't play songs on the PC. Can anyone please help.

It would help to have more background about your iTunes collection such as if you keep it on an external drive, or if you have moved or renamed anything recently.  iTunes is very sensitive to you renaming or moving files or folders involved with your media.  iTunes only keeps a reference to where a media file is located  and then goes to look for it when you try to play it. If you have changed things since it was added to itunes then it's like me sending you to look for a friend in my addressbook but that friend has moved.
The other possibility is your computer is starting to lose files.  Again, the computer uses a reference database to tell it where on the drive to look for a file. If that database gets corrupt then it starts losing files.  Use Dsk Utility's first aid to verify your hard drive.
