DVD drive does not recognise CD/DVD

Ok. SO recently my G42-230US notebook computer just does not play CD/DVDs. The drive opens, the green light appears on the side but when I go to my computer, my DVD/CR ROM drive does not appear. Can I get some help with this problem?

Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
Windows 7
Check if the drive is now working.
If the drive is still not working, from the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • CD/DVD drive does not read all DVD formats and regions

    Hi
My Teac-dw-224e-a does not read all DVDs formats and regions.
It does read CDs but no DVDs at all.
Not DVD-R and not even regular DVDs. I have checked the region of the DVD.
I have reinstalled the driver and also tried with different software.
    What can I do?
    Please help!

    Hi
It is possible that your DVD drive has wrong region settings.
In this case it is not able to watch all possible DVD movies from different regions.
Of course you can change the settings 4 times. But after this changing the settings are fixed and its not possible to change it anymore.

  • DVD drive does not play some DVDs properly

    Hi,
My Macbook was purchased in 2007; So it is a bit old. I haven't used the DVD drive very often.
I bought two new DVDs from Amazon recently. However, when I played them in my Macbook using DVD Player, the disk pauses and skips very often, making it impossible to watch the DVD. In addition, the Player would display the "Skip over damaged data" warning.
I thought it was a problem with the software (DVD Player); so I installed the VLC player. Problems occurred as well. Disk would pause and then simply stop (the screen closes).
I thought that perhaps it was the problem with the Amazon DVD disk. So I played some other DVDs in my Macbook, with both DVD Player and VLC Player. There was NO problem at all with the other DVDs.
Then my conclusion was that the Amazon DVD was faulty. I requested a replacement, which they sent to me promptly within a day.
However, the same problem occured. The replacement DVD would not play properly in either DVD Player or VLC Player in my Macbook. It would pause and skip very frequenntly.
Now I began to suspect that maybe the Optical Drive was faulty. So I brought the DVD to my school and tried to play it in two computers: one PC (with VLC); the other Mac (DVD Player). To my surprise, the DVD played flawlessly in those two computers.
Now my conclusion is that the optical drive of my Macbook is faulty.
However, after doing some preliminary research on the internet, I find that replacing the internal optical drive is a difficult process. The alternative seems to be buying an external drive. But there seems to be concern about booting the computer (when the need arises) from an external optical drive.
    Questions:
    1. Is my conclusion justified? (That I have a faulty optical DVD drive)
    2. If the optical drive is faulty, then why do some DVDs play with no problem in my Macbook?
    3. Would you recommend replacing the internal drive or puchasing an external optical drive? What are the advantages and disadvantages to both?
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks again. I went ahead and deleted the DVD Player folder and the plist file.
The result is that it appeared to temporarily improve the playback of the DVD. For the first two hours, the DVD paused considerably less and each pause was of a relatively short duration. There was much less skipping. So the playback was almost tolerable, if I lower my standards.
However, after two hours, it reverted to its old ways. The pauses and skipping became so frequent and long (as before) to make the DVD simply unwatchable.
I don't know what to make of this.

Hi there. count me in on the Sony DVD problems. My Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 will not recognize the Adobe Creative Suite 3 DVD for installation. The DVD works fine in other G4 systems.
The DVD drive will recognize data CD's but this Adobe DVD just churns and hums for 30 seconds and then the drive ejects the disk.

After reading the boards, it sounds like the Pioneer DVR-112D 18X DVD Burner (Drive only) is the unit to buy and replace this Sony one.
There appears to be a spacer issue related to the door on the G5 Tower case. Will the spacers from the Sony unit work on the Pioneer unit, or can the Pioneer unit just be installed as is using the existing ribbon cable. I've read the PMG5OpticalDriveDIY.pdf replacement manual, but am confused about SuperDrives vs. the Pioneer DVR-112D.
Can anyone clarify the details of replacement?
Also, will I need new software (Roxio, Toast) to burn CD's and DVD's after replacing the drive?
    thanks, and best regards,
    Eric

  • Satellite A660 - DVD drive will not recognise some DVDs

    I have a new Satellite A660-17E with a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N drive, running Windows 7 64 bit.
The drive will read most DVDs. Commercial DVDs (region 2) are fine. However, there are problems with DVDs recorded using DVD recorders. DVD+R recordings using a Philips machine work fine. DVD+R and DVD-R using a Sony HDX RDR 1095 machine do not work.
I'm hoping that the drive is ok and that this issue can be resolved by adjusting some setting or other?
    Any ideas?

It is most likely the issue is with the brand of dvd's you record with. as stated in the manual not all brands of recordable media are guaranteed to work with the dvd drive.
Also the sony recorder, i had a similar problem when playing the recorded dvd on another dvd machine, i found by adding a little more recorded info from the other machine onto the dvd it played fine after that. If you use DVD+R on the sony , record something on the laptop to the same dvd and then see if the dvd will play on the laptop.

  • Thinkpad L520 CD/DVD drive does not recognise or write to disks

Hi all. I hope as a newbie that I'm posting in the right area and not on a topic already covered. I've had my L520 for over a year now and have not previously needed to burn stuff to disk, so I do not know if my problem is new or old.
Essentially the drive recognises disks when they are inserted and accurately displays files already on the disk, but it gives available space as nil regardless of disk or existing file size. Additionally if a blank disk is inserted it will say that the disk cannot be read and to try formatting. These are standard preformatted disks I'm using. Please help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Written and finalised disks do not appear to have any capacity left, it is the way the CD file system works.
As for the empty disks, they are just empty, not pre-formatted. It seems to me you need a disk-burning application like Ashampoo Burning Studio Free or CDBurnerXP, which are free for personal use...

  • DVD drive does not burn the DVD but prompts the mysterious 0x8002006D error

I read the earlier threads about the mysterious 0x8002006D error.
Then went to look at the console and the DiskRecording log reads:
Finder: Burn sense: 3/73/03 Medium Error, Power calibration area error
Finder: Burn error: 0x8002006D The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
Can anyone tell what this could mean? Is the drive old and tired? I have the latest possible update for this Powerbook G4 1,25 GHz that I can use. What is meant by the latest firmware - where can I check which is the latest firmware for this particular DVD/CD superdrive ...
I am not trying to use the impossible, the G4 only supports DVD-R and with the speed up to 2x, so it is getting difficult to find suitable DVDs for this. The better MacBook is being serviced, as it has a screen problem, only after 1 year of use!
Please, can anyone help me, my works do not make any progres and I am in trouble!
    I would be grateful for

Actually, I found out that for this particular PowerBook model there is no further firmware upgrade for the SuperDrive, only for the models starting from 1.5 GHz. Obviously all I can do is downgrade my OS to the version, which I suspect was the one that still supported my SuperDrive to see, whether it is the Drive that has died or whether it is the conflict with the upgrades and the hardware.

  • MY DVD drive does not read all DVDs and also does not burn CDS properly. Often while burning a CD i am prompted that " The machine is unable to caliberate teh required Lazer Power"

Hi i am having a i MAC which has mountain lion OS 10.8.2. I am facing teh followwing issues with my disk drive

" Unable to caliberate lazer power"
    3. Kindly assit me in solving this problem

    Hi
    Four thoughts
    • Brand and type of DVD/CD Media
    • Burn Speed ?
    • Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
    • Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
Brand and type of DVD/CD Media: MATTERS
    - Memorex, NoName and other Cheap brands - most probably works for other things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO.
    I only use Verbatim
    - DVD-RW - usually do not work OK but with various kinds of problems. DVD+R is a more modern sort and use to give problems on older DVD-players
    I only use DVD-R
Burn Speed (in iDVD or alike): Matters
    • Best or Max - is not best
I set it down to x2 or x4 Max
Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
I use one WITHOUT Liquid but with brushes from time to time
Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
    - Due to that Mac OS X - is UNIX - it behaves likewise. It needs lot's of space on Boot / Start-Up Hard Disk for it's and the applications temp files.
I never go less than 25GB free space - If HD-Video material is used then 4-5 times more is a good thing.

It will likely require replacement of the drive. There is more than one laser in there: one for each function. One can go bad without the other going bad.

Above is the part number for the DVD burner drive. I could not find one on eBay.  Here is one online:

Replacement is easy. Remove a single screw on the bottom and slide the old drive out and replace with the new drive.

  • My cd/dvd drive does not recognize/load cds

iMac 10.6.8 snow leopard with iTunes 11.0, purchased in 2008.
The cd will be accepted into the drive which will begin to turn/mount the disk followed by a few clicks after which the drive stops, tries again, tries a 3rd time and then ejects the cd.  Dvds do load but I have been experiencing "skipping over damaged area" msgs when there is no damage.  Resetting the SMC alleviates that problem for dvds but not the cd loading problem. Cds that have been accepted in the past do no load, even brand new cds.
I do play dvds and cds frequently but before I conclude that my drive is failing due to wear and tear, I wanted to know if there's a way to clean the drive, if that's the problem.  The drive does not accept a dvd/cd drive cleaning disk.
Any suggestions for further at-home diagnosis/refurbishing before I contact my local authorized repair person or buy a Superdrive to substitute for the malfunctioning drive?

None of the information you have provided answered my question regarding a way to clean/refurbish a drive which will not accept a dvd/cd cleaning disk.
You finally advised me to do what I had already done prior to posting.
Perhaps you have a reading comprehension problem.  Although the internal drives are generically referred to as superdrives, I only employed that term in my initial post when referring to purchasing an external drive to potentially be shared with a laptop.  So, the confusion is yours.
The link below gives simple yet comprehensive coverage of when, why and how to reset SCM/PRAM, which does not include my CD mounting issue, although it resolved the "skipping over damaged areas" problem I had prior to my original post regarding alternative ways to clean the internal drive.
    http://thenextweb.com/lifehacks/2010/12/04/how-when-why-to-reset-the-pram-smc-on -your-mac/
The link below contains a discussion of failing dvd/cd drives for iMacs of the same vintage as mine with the similar mounting issues.  I had no success mounting a CD via a virtual XP environment, so it's more likely a hardware issue.

I have canon dvd handycam, and mini dvd works on it. One month back i recorded movie and pictures on mini dvd using handycam and ran mini dvd on my tecra M5 dvd drive, it worked very fine.
Now after 1 month i have 5 mini dvds with movies and pictures which i took on 1 month vacation in diffierent countries, i tried my best but tecra dvd drive does not read these mini dvd, cd drive label appears instead dvd drive when i put mini dvd in it.
All other standard size dvds, cds working fine on it.Its complicated and as well as irritating.
    Any suggestions?
    Why its messedup?

Seems the lens cannot read this miniDVDs. Possibly the drive lens cannot calibrate and therefore the miniDVDs are nonreadable.
Try the solution from sascha. Maybe youre a lucky man and it works.
If not, try to remove the drive physically from the notebook. Reboot the notebook without the drive. The Windows and BIOS shouldnt recognize the drive.
Then shuts down again, put the drive into the notebook and boot up the unit.
The notebook should recognize the drive and should indicate the firmware again.
Im not sure if this will help you but its attemptable

  • Re: CD/DVD drive does not seem to start DVDs in Satellite P750

My CD/DVD drive does not seem to start DVDs, it would turn and turn and the only way I can start a DVD (i.e. a movie) is by using Windows Media Centre, while software to be installed needs to be activated from Windows Explorer.
    Anybody?

    Thanks!

Thanks, Xaver, tried this, still won't autoplay, it will just turn the dvd around for a while and then stop. Though when I open Windows Medi Centre and choos 'play DVD', it does the trick. The only way to install software, though si through Windows Exp[lorer and searching relevant file. Cheers,
