DVD drive does not recognize some media on Satellite A30-514

I own a Satellite A30-514 laptop with Microsoft xp OS. Just lately, some DVD's (not games) will not play from the drive. some do some don't. It is not a region problem - they are all region 2. Windows does not read the disc when it is inserted and does not register a disc in the drive when I show 'my computer'. CD's all play normally. Could this be a driver (internal) issue or is my DVD CD combo just too old now?
Thanks Marie.

Hi
To give you some precise answer it will be interesting to know which DVDs are not readable. Meaning of word 'some media' is to general and not helpful to understand the problem.
Satellite A30 is pretty old notebook model and it is possible that ODD functionality is not good anymore. You can try to clean the lens.

I have taken other disk from my friend - the situation has not changed.
Installation Windows XP SP3 has a success only after copying the distribution kit on removable HDD and manual install Windows from command prompt
    But I think its abnormal.
I think, the theme can be closed because this question should be addressed to Toshiba's fimware developers
+If you cannot use “some CDs with diagnostic utilities” maybe are the problem those CDs. For me it is not so dramatic issue. if you can use all “commercial” medias everything must be OK.+

  • DVD drive does not recognize blank media

I have a Matshia DVD-RAM UJ-841S DVD drive, that will not recognize blank DVD media. This has been going on for a while now, so I don't know 'what has changed'. It will recognize/burn CD's, will play DVD's, but will not recognize blank DVD media. I have tried reinstalling the driver, tried different types of high quality media (Verbatim, Memorex etc). I have burned many DVD's in the past, this drive is (was) capable of doing it (despite what Microsofts FixIt programs says). I'm not terribly techy, so if it is a registry problem you'll have to explain it very carefully.
    Thanks,

  • DVD drive does not recognize my Windows 7 disc

I'm using a macbook pro purchased September 2009.
I purchased Windows 7 home premium full version and when I insert the installation disc, both 32 and 64 bit versions, the DVD drive on the computer does not recognize the disc. It spits it back out. Anyone else having this problem?
My external dvd drive works fine. I tried going through the install process this way but when the computer restarts, I get a screen that says no bootable device, press any button to continue.
    Need some help please.

I am having the exact same problem! I currently am running Windows XP Pro in bootcamp and would like to use a Windows 7 Upgrade disk to upgrade my partition. (or clean install) But for some reason my Macbook Pro (also purchased recently) will not read the Upgrade DVD at all! I tied running it on startup, in Snow Leopard, and even in XP.
Out of desperation, I ran the disk on my iMac (that has not been updated to Snow Leopard yet) and it read the disk perfectly! I then began to question if my Macbook's disk drive was working properly. So I then ran a random CD and then a DVD on it and both read flawlessly!
Some people claim that they have fixed this problem simply by cleaning the Upgrade disk. This, however, did not work for me. There seems to be a trend with MacBooks having this trouble, but that could be completely coincidental! Apple has also announced that they will release an update that will officially provide support for Windows 7. Maybe this will provide a solution.
I'm about out of ideas so any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Satellite L50D-B - faulty DVD drive does not recognize disks

Bought 2 months ago. The drive does not accept CD's, DVD's or anything.
The name of the disk doesn't show up on the drive and if you double click on the DVD drive icon (while a disk is inserted) the tray opens up and says please insert a disk. I've tried many disks so they are not the issue.
So far I've taken it to tech support where I purchased it.
They said to do a reinstall so I did - with the full clean drive. I've tried updating the drivers but the computer insists that they are the latest. If I search for my model number on the Toshiba driver support site it gets rejected and I have no access to drivers (from Toshiba).
I checked out a few other forums and tried the regedit fix but that also did nothing. If no solution is found (and I've already wasted hours of my life on it) then this notebook is going to back for a refund and I'll get one that is going to perform the simple task of playing a DVD.

    Hi
Sorry to hear that you have such stupid problem with your machine. On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there.
In my opinion you should not waste your time checking and searching for some drivers that probably will not help at all.
Reinstall original operating system that you have got with your machine and test functionality with factory settings. If the result is the same contact your local dealer or Toshiba service provider directly and ask for help. They can check ODD and exchange it if necessary.

  • My cd/dvd drive does not recognize/load cds

iMac 10.6.8 snow leopard with iTunes 11.0, purchased in 2008.
The cd will be accepted into the drive which will begin to turn/mount the disk followed by a few clicks after which the drive stops, tries again, tries a 3rd time and then ejects the cd.  Dvds do load but I have been experiencing "skipping over damaged area" msgs when there is no damage.  Resetting the SMC alleviates that problem for dvds but not the cd loading problem. Cds that have been accepted in the past do no load, even brand new cds.
I do play dvds and cds frequently but before I conclude that my drive is failing due to wear and tear, I wanted to know if there's a way to clean the drive, if that's the problem.  The drive does not accept a dvd/cd drive cleaning disk.
Any suggestions for further at-home diagnosis/refurbishing before I contact my local authorized repair person or buy a Superdrive to substitute for the malfunctioning drive?

None of the information you have provided answered my question regarding a way to clean/refurbish a drive which will not accept a dvd/cd cleaning disk.
You finally advised me to do what I had already done prior to posting.
Perhaps you have a reading comprehension problem.  Although the internal drives are generically referred to as superdrives, I only employed that term in my initial post when referring to purchasing an external drive to potentially be shared with a laptop.  So, the confusion is yours.
The link below gives simple yet comprehensive coverage of when, why and how to reset SCM/PRAM, which does not include my CD mounting issue, although it resolved the "skipping over damaged areas" problem I had prior to my original post regarding alternative ways to clean the internal drive.

The link below contains a discussion of failing dvd/cd drives for iMacs of the same vintage as mine with the similar mounting issues.  I had no success mounting a CD via a virtual XP environment, so it's more likely a hardware issue.

After reading the boards, it sounds like the Pioneer DVR-112D 18X DVD Burner (Drive only) is the unit to buy and replace this Sony one.
There appears to be a spacer issue related to the door on the G5 Tower case. Will the spacers from the Sony unit work on the Pioneer unit, or can the Pioneer unit just be installed as is using the existing ribbon cable. I've read the PMG5OpticalDriveDIY.pdf replacement manual, but am confused about SuperDrives vs. the Pioneer DVR-112D.
Can anyone clarify the details of replacement?
Also, will I need new software (Roxio, Toast) to burn CD's and DVD's after replacing the drive?
    thanks, and best regards,
    Eric

  • DVD drive does not play some DVDs properly

    Hi,
My Macbook was purchased in 2007; So it is a bit old. I haven't used the DVD drive very often.
I bought two new DVDs from Amazon recently. However, when I played them in my Macbook using DVD Player, the disk pauses and skips very often, making it impossible to watch the DVD. In addition, the Player would display the "Skip over damaged data" warning.
I thought it was a problem with the software (DVD Player); so I installed the VLC player. Problems occurred as well. Disk would pause and then simply stop (the screen closes).
I thought that perhaps it was the problem with the Amazon DVD disk. So I played some other DVDs in my Macbook, with both DVD Player and VLC Player. There was NO problem at all with the other DVDs.
Then my conclusion was that the Amazon DVD was faulty. I requested a replacement, which they sent to me promptly within a day.
However, the same problem occured. The replacement DVD would not play properly in either DVD Player or VLC Player in my Macbook. It would pause and skip very frequenntly.
Now I began to suspect that maybe the Optical Drive was faulty. So I brought the DVD to my school and tried to play it in two computers: one PC (with VLC); the other Mac (DVD Player). To my surprise, the DVD played flawlessly in those two computers.
Now my conclusion is that the optical drive of my Macbook is faulty.
However, after doing some preliminary research on the internet, I find that replacing the internal optical drive is a difficult process. The alternative seems to be buying an external drive. But there seems to be concern about booting the computer (when the need arises) from an external optical drive.
    Questions:
    1. Is my conclusion justified? (That I have a faulty optical DVD drive)
    2. If the optical drive is faulty, then why do some DVDs play with no problem in my Macbook?
    3. Would you recommend replacing the internal drive or puchasing an external optical drive? What are the advantages and disadvantages to both?
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks again. I went ahead and deleted the DVD Player folder and the plist file.
The result is that it appeared to temporarily improve the playback of the DVD. For the first two hours, the DVD paused considerably less and each pause was of a relatively short duration. There was much less skipping. So the playback was almost tolerable, if I lower my standards.
However, after two hours, it reverted to its old ways. The pauses and skipping became so frequent and long (as before) to make the DVD simply unwatchable.
I don't know what to make of this.

  • DVD drive does not read SOME discs

    Hello there,
My DVD drive had been working fine for the last 2 years, but now it sometimes simply won't read some film DVDs. The problem is not related to the DVD area thing. What happens is that I put the disc in the drive, it spends a long time spinning the disc around, and then nothing happens: explorer just shows as if there was no disc in the drive.
My laptop is a HP Compaq 6715s. My system is Windows XP SP3. My drive lists as a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L. (For some reason, although I only have one physical drive, another device is listed in the Device Manager just underneath the GSA-T20L: a TSHAJWP XAZ0TU7SPEF SCSI CdRom. But I believe this is a virtual drive created by Deamon emulator?).
All hints and help would be greatly appreciated!
    Best,
    Pedro

Also, I forgot to say that I have tested the films that don't work in my machine elsewhere, so I am certain the problem is not in the discs themselves.

  • DVD drive does not recognize disks

    Hey,
I have an e-mac with panther on it. I have been successfully burning DVD's for a few years now. This weekend I got an interesting error message. MY super drive would not read the blank DVD that I put in the drive and then it would not read ANY disk that I put in the drive. IT is like my Superdrive has fallen out of my system.
I believe the original error message was this: Put a blank DVD in the drive and then the drive would open and close and open again and say, "Please put a blank DVD in the drive."

Did you reboot? It sounds like a file systems error or incompatiblility. Do you have a "test" startup ID? If not, create one and turn off all utilities and applications and just keep IDVD or Disk Utility and Quicktime, Itunes, -- all apps that can view and read audio and graphis, movies. And close all the apps that are document readers-- Word, etc.
Then restart with the Test ID and try your drive then.
Keep this Test ID-- name it "to use SuperDrive" or something. Then when yo have time-- do the whole trial and error of turning one more app on and restart, etc-- takes hours maybe...
Also-- did you recently put in a new app or update? I've read that some of the Apple updates have caused problems with emacs and Ipods. So it is best to turn off or trash those upgrades and test that out. (you can always dl them again)
I bet it is just as simple as this-- some conflict with an application or new update.

  • Tecra M5: DVD drive does not read these mini DVDs

I have canon dvd handycam, and mini dvd works on it. One month back i recorded movie and pictures on mini dvd using handycam and ran mini dvd on my tecra M5 dvd drive, it worked very fine.
Now after 1 month i have 5 mini dvds with movies and pictures which i took on 1 month vacation in diffierent countries, i tried my best but tecra dvd drive does not read these mini dvd, cd drive label appears instead dvd drive when i put mini dvd in it.
All other standard size dvds, cds working fine on it.Its complicated and as well as irritating.
    Any suggestions?
    Why its messedup?

Seems the lens cannot read this miniDVDs. Possibly the drive lens cannot calibrate and therefore the miniDVDs are nonreadable.
Try the solution from sascha. Maybe youre a lucky man and it works.
If not, try to remove the drive physically from the notebook. Reboot the notebook without the drive. The Windows and BIOS shouldnt recognize the drive.
Then shuts down again, put the drive into the notebook and boot up the unit.
The notebook should recognize the drive and should indicate the firmware again.
Im not sure if this will help you but its attemptable

  • Re: CD/DVD drive does not seem to start DVDs in Satellite P750

My CD/DVD drive does not seem to start DVDs, it would turn and turn and the only way I can start a DVD (i.e. a movie) is by using Windows Media Centre, while software to be installed needs to be activated from Windows Explorer.
    Anybody?
    Please help.
    Thanks!

Thanks, Xaver, tried this, still won't autoplay, it will just turn the dvd around for a while and then stop. Though when I open Windows Medi Centre and choos 'play DVD', it does the trick. The only way to install software, though si through Windows Exp[lorer and searching relevant file. Cheers,
