DVD drive for G4 power Mac

I replace the old CD drive with a Pioneer DVR-S18LBK, got a new pci SATA card for it, and it worked fine. I could open and close the tray from the key board, I burnt one iDVD and now it has stopped working.
It has power to it and the tray can only open and close if I dismantle it and press the button on the DVD drive. CDs or DVDs do not appear on the desktop when inserted. When I unplug the SATA cable it brings up an window that says something has been removed, when I plug it back in it recognises it as the Pioneer DVR-S18LBK.
The old CD drive works, I am stuck with what to do, any ideas?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I'm assuming this DVD drive is for the QuickSilver 733 Mhz in your profile. Am I correct?
A lot of third party DVD drives will only work with Macs if http://www.patchburn.de/ is installed. Some may require a firmware update applied from a PC. Check http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ to see if your drive has been tried on Macs before running your operating system.

  • HD DVD Player for a Power Mac G5

    Okay.
I got this beautiful 30 inch HD Cinema Display.
    A Power Mac Dual 2.5Ghz PP G5.
and i cant play HD DVD's in my dvd drive.
Anyone know of an upgraded DVD Drive.
A HD DVD Drive for a Computer.
    Do they make it yet?
There producing HD DVD so why isnt there a computer dvd drive that handles it.

You won't be able to play HD-DVD or BD-DVD's in your computer or with your monitor.
Right now the whole "High def" on computers is up in the air and will require a DRM solution from the computer ot the monitor. Enjoy your powerful machine and wait out the next few years until everything settles down.
When it does you can sell what you have and buy the new hottness.

  • DVD drive cover on Power Mac G5 stays down (that little aluminum door)

I have an older model Power Mac G5 (2004) and the little aluminum cover that moves up and down before you insert/eject a disc seems to be stuck in the down position. I'm pretty sure it's because of dust that probably accumulated in the hinges over time. Has anyone dealt with this before and what's an easy way to fix and clean those hinges? I'm trying to prep it up before I sell it. Thanks.

Blow the dust out with compressed air.
Canned air dusters can be purchased at any PC supply shop.
After blowing, a dab of silicon lubricant on each hinge pin should make things smooth as silk.

  • Replacement CD/DVD Drive for 2008 Mac Pro?

I need to purchase a new optical drive for my 2008 Mac Pro 2.8 GHz Quad-Core desktop computer. I checked OWC, but they're out of stock. I currently have a Samsung SH-S222L, which I absolutely hate–mainly because the heads access the drive every 5 minutes or so. Very, very annoying.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Psst ! Here's a little tip for you. The drive used in Mac Pro's isn't exclusive to the mac. It's an Optiarc model
and I believe you can use any cd/dvd burning drive with an ATAPI plug on the back, Pc or Mac, and chances are it'll work fine,  I used a Lite-On drive I snagged from a dying PC in my Mac pro 3,1 as my 2nd dvd drive
and it worked fine for a few years. Replacing it isn't that hard either. There are guides on Youtube or other places that show you how to do it. Just remember to remove the little lip on the front of the dvd drawer before you install it.  I don't know about specific brands, but Pioneer seems fine, and I'm sure there are others that are fine, too. macsales might help you out. I know what it's like having to haul your Mac pro into your local Mac place--a pain in the butt, right? and then you have to wait...and wait...
I think you can can do this....
    good luck

  • Do I need to buy a particular 10.5 Leopard DVD for my Power Mac G5

I have been having problems with my Power Mac G5, which can only be resolved by reinstalling leopard, and since I don't have the DVD, I have been looking for a 10.5 Leopard DVD for my Power Mac G5. However I have noticed that some discs say they only work for a particular kind of mac ( which is true, since I attempted installing leopard with a macbook pro dvd, which did not turn out well ). Do I have to look for a 10.5 Leopard DVD that is particularly for a Power Mac G5? If so, where can I find one?

Yes, Gray Install Discs, the ones that come with Macs are Machine specific.
    You need the Retail version.
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

  • Recommend a good external DVD drive for Mac?

can anyone recommend a good external rewritable DVD drive for my EMac? i want something that will work with iDVD of course... thanks in advance.

LaCie is one. The Macally 500BC Firewire/USB 2.0 enclosure with a separate Pioneer S-Drive is another viable option.
I personally use multiple ADS Tech 1394 Pyro FW Enclosures with a Pioneer 110D S-Drive as well as a few ext. FW HD's and they all work well on mult. G4 systems (completely interchangeable via FW 400).
This link may help you to build your own S-Drive if you wish:

  • Will there be a hd dvd drive for the mac anytime soon?

is there going to be a hd dvd drive for th emac anytime soon? or will the release a firmware update possibly?....also can I use the x-box 360's hd drive with my powermac to watch hd movies

    Hi Parker,
Some friendly advice.. if you're just after points, or if you actually ask for them, perhaps you're looking at the purpose of these boards incorrectly. The boards are here to help fellow users of Apple products. The points are a nice reward, but they are optional. Mellow out and accept that you won't get points for every answer.
In this specific case, your first response was quite accurate and helpful, but the rest, in my opinion, were incorrect and based on insufficient knowledge of the subject. Additionally, in speculating about future Apple hardware releases, you may have actually breached the terms and conditions of use for these boards.
Just something to keep an eye on.

  • Memorex DVD+R Dual Layer & Power Mac G5

For some reason my G5 want read a Memorex DVD+R Dual Layer disc that my friend burnt for me. I put the disc in, and the computer just spits it back out at me. Is this normal? What can I do? I got my G5 in 2004 can newer G5s read Dual layers? My friend made it on a Power Book so I dont see why I cant read the disc.

Yes, they are relatively new. For more on the history of DVD, see this page:
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
I typically buy double sided DVD-R disks to burn more than 4.7 GB of data. These you flip over when you want more content than can fit on one side of a DVD. Alas you have to split up the content. Depending on the type of content this can be done by segmenting an image, or compressing the data itself and segmenting a compressed file. What's odd is that some disks which appear on the surface to be dual layer because of their single sided capacity, such as the Tiger installation DVD, are in fact readable by all DVD drives that are on Macs, whereas the commercial DVD+R DL is not. I don't know the difference between commercial and consumer grade Dual Layer disks, but there does appear to be one which makes them readable on Commercial grade whereas Consumer is not on older DVD players.

How can i use my smart TV as a second monitor for my Power mac (2010) via HDMI cable? i've made the connection but no options show in system prefs display.
    the computer:Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.9.5), 2 x 2.66 Ghz 6-Core intel Xeon
    the TV: LG Smart tv

The Mac uses a highly-parameterized universal Driver for every display. The parameters are set at certain times when a query is sent to your display. The display MUST answer with its name and capabilities, or the screen stays dark. A TV set that is off or "not paying attention" because it is set to a different port when the query occurs will rarely answer, and so will often remain dark.
You can use tools in the System Report to see whether your display has been detected at all. If it has, the report will look something like this, but its name will appear:
The times when the query is sent are:
    • at Startup
    • at wake from sleep
    • when the Mac-end of the cable is inserted
    • when using the Option ( Detect Displays ) button in displays preferences

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!

  • I want a 2nd DVD drive for my iMac

    Hi
Have a new 24" Alloy iMac and well, having moved my main computer from a PC to a MAC is great, iLove it! Problem though is there are lots of times where I could utilize a 2nd CD/DVD drive. Apparently the external drive for the MacBook Air is exclusive to that (which doesn't make any sense to me - Apple would sell a ton of these if they made them non-specific rather than to only a small % of sales). So I've been poking around here on the forums and I've seen some referenced to MacSales.com site - but with such a beautiful machine as an iMac, I can't bring myself to getting one of these butt ugly things. Found a handsome LG CD/DVD with Lightscribe external drive, but no evidence of Mac support.
Where can I get, or how can I get an external DVD drive for my Mac? I'd rather avoid patching if possible.
Better still: Apple - update the MacAir drive to be universal for your machines please!
    Thanks!

OWC (macsales.com) would be a good source, since they are very Mac-centric and should know what works well and what does not work well with Macs and Mac OS X.
They may be boxy and "ugly" but those full-sized tray-loading drives are the most reliable type. Plus with a tray-loader, you can read the strangely shaped and mini- discs that would choke a slot-loader.
If you want more style, LaCie is also Mac-oriented and they have some choices.

  • How can I switch the region code on MBP w/ DVD drive for the 5th and final time?

How can I switch the region code on MBP w/ DVD drive for the 5th and final time? It brings up the window with that world map to do it, including the warning that "this is the 5th and final time I can do this", when inserting a DVD and opening "DVD Player", but it never executes my click on the "Change Drive Region" button prompt.
VLC or Quicktime Player won't play it either, but won't bring up that window to change Region Code anyway....
Otherwise, I'm not having any other issues with this MBP at all. Peak performance on all counts :-)
I tried resetting SMC after chatting w/ Apple Support, but it didn't help.
That was the link they provided. Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac
    Tried zapping PRAM as well.
    Thanks for any clues, Rene

Region encoding is the mechanism that enables motion picture studios to control the worldwide release of their movies. It is required by the DVD Forum (http://www.dvdforum.org/forum.shtml) in all commercial hardware DVD players. Every DVD-Video disc contains one byte of data representing a region code, which limits where the disc can be played.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
Once you have set the region in DVD Player five times it cannot be changed. However see this also:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25416?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Instead, use VLC to view videos from different regions:

I have an older Power Mac G5 Quad, and my video card just went out. I am trying to find a video card that will work for my Power Mac. I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card. The serial number on my computer is: RM620603R6W. Apple won't help me because the computer is older than suggested. Please give me the exact video card that will work best for my computer.

Hi Mike, make sure the card has Mac ROM, or is a PC card with Mac ROMs flashed to it...
G5 PCIe options are listed here:

  • Can I use a MacBook pro as an external display for a Power Mac G5

My problem is that the Studio display from 2004 is beginning to fail.  What can I use as a replacement display?  It seems that the Thunderbolt displays are out of the question, and some of the other new displays may require an Intel-based OSX.
So, assuming I buy a MacBook Pro in the future, I'd like to continue to keep the Power Mac G5 as a back-up.  Can I use the screen on the MacBook Pro as a display for the Power Mac, and if so, how?

Depending on what you use your computers for, the concept of using the screen of a MacBook as a display for a desktop Power Mac is about as poor an idea as I've heard in a long, long time.
    Thanks for the chuckle.
PS.— There are plenty of inexpensive screens you can use instead.

  • Use external drive for windows and mac

    Hello,
I just bought a external 320Gb Western Digital Drive. I would like to use
the drive for windows and mac.I will not like to make partation on the drive
to use it on both operating systems. Is there any formating system with which i can use in both operating systems? I would like to use time machine feature on that drive also.
    Thanx.

If you want to use a disk for both PC/Mac file storage and Time Machine, you will have to create two partitions. Partitioning is sort of like creating multiple virtual disks on the same physical disk. One partition should be formatted for PC (which the Mac can also use) and the other should be formatted for HFS+ (Mac only) which is what Time Machine requires. The Disk Utility application makes partitioning and formatting very easy.
