DVD drive going bye bye?

I have had my macbook pro for about 2.5 years and now whenever I import my CDs to iTunes the songs skip, and I know there is nothing wrong with the CD. Do you think I need to replace my DVD drive, and where is the best place to buy a replacement? Or should I just try and clean it? Thanks again everyone for your help.

This time I didn't disconnect anything when I shut down, and just gave it about half an hour or more turned off while I did some other things. Powered up and it automatically ejected the disk on startup, and immediately mounted it when I popped it back in. Intermittent issues are the worst! Until it flat out fails, I'm stuck with it.
The Mini itself is running very cool - and being only a few months old I doubt dust would be an issue... My external DVDR arrives tomorrow - if it starts doing the same thing then I guess I could conclude there is something conflicting going on between my various video applications. I recently noticed the DVD Player was launching every time I put in a video DVD - even though I had system preferences set to "ignore". I had to also turn it off in DVD Player itself. Probably unrelated, but strange I thought.

  • DVD drive keeps cycling

Since installing 10.4.8 yesterday, my DVD unit keeps cycling like it is trying to find a DVD. When I have a CD/DVD installed, it continues to make funny noises.
Is this problem caused by 10.4.8 or just coincident with my DVD drive going bad?
....and by the way, my Applecare expires on 10 OCT ;-(

It seems to have fixed itself....

  • DVD drive makes noise whenever my macbook is moved???

6 months without any problem then suddendly any time I move my MB there is a noise (like an eject noise) comming from my dvd drive. I don't have any CD or DVD in the drive.
Any idea? Is my dvd drive going bad?
    Thanks

Are you sure it isn't the hard drive's sudden motion detector temporarily parking the HD heads?

  • B540 DVD drive disapperared / missing

Would like to know what can one do when the DVD drive goes missing on this computer.  Would like to know if any one has faced similar problem on B 540.  Called the support line.  They said that they would send a rep to take a look.  Have read a few threads in this community about other machines missing dvd drive.  Seems like this is a common problem in lenovo machines.
Would appreciate any help or tips that one could provide to fix this.  Is this due to some of the updates from MS windows 7 causing this.  I have win 7 home premium on my desktop.
    Thank you in anticipation.

    Hi
    Welcome To Lenovo Community
We are really sorry to hear about the issue you are facing,
This is most likely a software related issue, but as a first step, ensure the drive is still recognized at the hardware level by restarting the system and entering BIOS or boot menu .  Ensure the DVD drive is recognized as one of the attached storage devices.
If the drive is not recognized in BIOS, please contact service.
If the drive is recognized in BIOS, but does not work properly in Windows:
You might try the automated Microsoft Fixit solution for CD/DVD drives here.
If you are you are technically proficient, you can also try the following to remove the affected filter drivers.
     1. Click on the Start button and type regedit in the Start Search box. Click on the located file in the Programs list.
     2. Type in your administrator password or confirmation if you are prompted to do so and click on Continue.
     3. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
    hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
Note that there may be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 3. Check that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilter values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the default data value is DVD/CDRom and the class data value is CDRom.
In the right pane, right-click Upperfilters , and then click Delete .
Click Yes to confirm the removal of the Upperfilters registry entry.
In the right pane, right-click Lowerfilters , and then click Delete .
Click Yes to confirm the removal of the Lowerfilters registry entry.
Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

This freezing reminds me of really old Macs, long ago, in the days of the old-school peripherals like SCSI drives, terminators, scanners and the like. If you had a SCSI conflict, like the wrong device ID's or something, you'd freeze up like that. Back in those days you'd call 800-SOS-APPLE (AAPL?) and they'd run you through disconnecting all your extra hardware - Jaz and Zip drives, CD burners, scanners etc and then eliminate them one by one by adding them incrementally and testing for the freeze/bomb dialog.
But, today we have Firewire and none of those ancient issues (no free lifetime tech support either). My iMac's ports are all full, and I only know which devices are connected when I have to remove something for another device. iSight, scanner, card reader, external hard drive, USB soundsticks, etc. You wouldn't happen to have any SCSI devices hooked up, would you?
Out of curiosity, have you tried a different USB/Firewire port for the hard drive? Or run the hardware test DVD that comes with your computer? This weird freezing seems to suggest a problem with the computer, RAM or network more than a device. Bad devices, in my experience, cause kernel panics, not freezing.

  • Replacement DVD drive for a Portege A100

    Hi
My Portege's DVD drive is making horrible clicking noises and appears to be on its way out. I have read from a thread on here that universal drives might not work as the Portege's BIOS has assigned the DVD drive as slave and that the new drive must be slave in order to work. Is this correct? I really do not want to be doing the soldering fix!
I have another laptop which has a TSST drive in and i plugged this in and the portgege showed an ide error. Is it just a matter of having the correct firmware or is the issue regarding the ide settings mentioned above.
I have shortlisted a Toshiba dvd drive PA3162E-2CD2 but it says it is compatitble with the Portege 4000, 4010, M100 and Tecra 9000, but does not list the A100 as compatible. Does anyone know if this drive will work on my machine?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi again
You are right. I have checked users manuals and there is nothing about compatible ODDs (optical disc drive). I recommend you to replace it wit the same model. Portege A100 is not known to me (I believe it is designed for UK market only) but ODD replacement is pretty simply. I believe ODD is fixed and it is mostly done with one screw that you can find on bottom side. After removing the screw you can take ODD out of notebook.
New drive must be placed into same place, fixed with screw and the job is done. If nobody offer any help here you can see if you will be able to remove ODD alone.
    Bye and good luck!

  • Problem with cd/dvd drive on my Satellite 1900-303

    Hi Every body
I bought a Satellite 1900-303 in 2003. Recently, it's cd/Dvd drive stopped to work properly. whenever I put a Cd in the driver it assumes that the CD is a audio cd. if the CD is completly Audio cd or partly contained audio files it opens the cd without any problem. but if cd is data CD or software CD after trying along time my system hangs up. I change the settings of the properites of Cd drive in Autoplay section from Music file to other options such as "mixed content". but after inserting CD into the drivers it agains changes automaticaly to the "music file". I showed my notebook an expert in computer system and facility, he tried to reinstall windows XP to solve the problem but it didn't work. Since the driver was not working he used external driver to install windows XP. but the problem has not been solved.
Is there anybody who knows by accident what I should do to recover it?
    Awaiting helpful advices.
    Vahed

    HI,
did your friend installed the XP from a MS Cd or from the Toshiba recovery CD?
At my Toshiba notebook the autoplay section is also setted to Music file and works properly!
When did this failure occured for the first time? Did you used the MS System recovery option at Start - Accessories - system prog. - System recovery
Perhaps the backsetting of your system solve the problem!
You can also check if a firmware update is available for your drive! (If it is a Toshiba drive go to http://www.toshiba-europe.com/storage/index.asp?nav=HOM&page=HOM&frame=home

  • L305-s5933 dvd drive wont open

    hi.
Well I've been experiencing problems with the dvd drive in my laptop last week, I dont know when this problem started because I don't use the dvd drive very often but the problem is that the dvd drive won't open after the computer has been on for one hour or more, when the computer has only a few minutes turned on, I can open the drive and read any dvd/cd I want, but after one hour the freaking drive just stop responding to the eject button. Trying to eject using Windows software won't work either. The only way to make the drive work again is to turn off the laptop and turn it on again.
a few weeks ago I made a clean install of windows 7, so I'm guessing I forgot to install a driver or something?
    just to sumarize my situation:
-Dvd drive won't open after the computer has been on for a while. (Doesn't repond to  eject button or windows eject command)
-I have to turn off the computer and turn it on again to make the dvd drive work again
-I'm not sure if this problem started after i installed windows 7.
    Any help?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Just for the record.
The problem I was having with the DVD drive was caused because I didn't install an AHCI/PCIIDE patch that's is included in the drivers and applications recovery DVD. After installing this patch (is actually a registry patch) the DVD is working just fine, doesn't matter how long I use the laptop.
Even tough windows 7 supports natively AHCI mode for SATA devices,  DVD-rw drives in some (not all) Toshiba laptops have problems in the long run if you don't apply the registry patch.
I hope my experience helps others experiencing this problem.
    bye.

  • Installed 10.5.3 update and bye bye

I have never had one issue with my mac ever. I installed Leopard and everything was fine, I got my first OSX update and installed it. As soon as it was done I started having problems just about any program I was in online or offline would run for a bit but slowly, then I would move the mouse or click something and there was the spinning ball of death, and then the program would crash. So then it would pop up the would u like to report box and I would say yes, and typing it would pop up another box but when I would fill out the problem and push send it would say (and I can't remember exactly) but could not send and another 2 or 3 box's would pop up. After about 4 times filling them out and sending and it saying not sent. I just hit ignore or no. Still all my programs dyeing on me I thought maybe I should reboot. So I did and my computer has been gone ever since I only get the apple and spinner but before that the world in a box followed by the finder file ? file. I have taken to the genius bar they did a bunch of stuff, to no outcome, and I bought a 500GB external hard drive and tried to boot off macbook save everything then erase and reinstall and transfer back. done every trick everyone has said to do run every fix program I have been given or have and they all say everything is fine and all my hardware is running perfectly, it just seems to be saying that there is no Osx installed to boot from and wont boot off other mac either. What has happend. And is apple gonna step up and help. Because from what I have read online this has happend to a bunch of people? HELP!

Thanks MacJack, u were close let me clarify. I went to apples genius bar twice we started with the basics like option start to boot no go, he tried a couple other things, like a control option shift delete thing that ran a test I passed. Eventualy he broke out his own personal external HD with every os on it and booted from there sorta it showd his HD and A secondary one (mine) he checked and all my stuff was still there. But he found nothing to fix he commented on how clean my computer and system was, but long line not a lot of time. With his HD disconnected nothing had changed we ran the tech tool pro test which checks every piece of harware in your computer and I passed all. We ran the test at the option start mode that is offered and it offers two test basic and extended we ran extended now this is an apple test and says right under extended if you pass you have no hardware issues and that u should call apple and ask them if they are having any issues with any of your software. Passed. So guy says I think what we should do is just leave it here I'll boot up from my HD back up all your stuff. Then erase and reinstall everything up to the software upgrade, then plug my HD back in and put all your stuff back. But he said 8 days and 150$ so I said I'll sleep ok it. He then gives me a number to a local shop here in town thats been keeping mac users going here for 23 years I think 25 something like that he says they'll do it cheaper same day. So I go there same routine and outcome but he says 65$ but no back up to external HD he says hes going to remove my HD replace with brand new install everything, then sled my old HD boot it off the now new HD and put back, this includes extra labor charges he does not know how much and the cost of whatever new HD I choose. So I say what's the 65$ for minnimum just to touch it. I ask why a new HD when every test says it's fine. He want's to guarantee his work. I decline a few days later thinking about how dumb I am for not have backing up my HD along time ago, I think I need a external HD anyway why not go buy one install mac osx 10.4 & 10.5. And then boot my own computer off my own external HD and back up, erase reinstall and transfer back. Then I have a back up of my own I should have already had. Back at the apple store talk to guy about it he says ya great Idea helps me pick out a HD and I'm off untill I get home and can't figure out how he and the other dude had there install software installed on there external HDs so I call the HD company, they say don't do that. Why? Blahh blahh blahh. What do u suggest. He says do u have another mac with osx on it ? Yes. Connect them together USB, FireWire however u want your computer will boot up from that drive connect your external HD to the other computer and back up all your stuff disconnect everything reconnect your computer erase reinstall plug in HD transfer your Gold. Whooooo hooooo! I'm elated except two days of trying and it will not boot off of anything. (except dudes) HD which HD guy says is bad news danger! And yes I have never had a single problem nor heard of a mac that just stops running, untill now I have found hundreds of people that had the same thing happen no solutions (for the ore intell macs) anyway. Just yesterday I found a blog were a whole High school who all had iMac G4s round base just like mine installed the Leopard update and bye bye for all there network. Apples gotta know if our machines are in great shape as far as hardware then installing a software update that eats your computers brain, is something they should step up and fix. At there cost.

    HELP!

    Hi,
if you want to check the drive insert a bootabl CD/DVD, start the notebook and press F12 for boot menu!
Then boot from CD, when it start the drive should be ok!
Then the failure is windows based and a System Restore should display the CD Drive in explorer again!
Otherwise it can be a hardware failure look faulty IDE connector or something else. Then a Toshiba Service Partner should be called for a short check up!

  • Hard drive and dvd drive - simultaneous failure

    Hi
I'm running a 2yr 8 month old PowerPC. G4 1.67ghz with 2gb RAM. Until today, it's been pretty much faultless. I have had issues in the past related to installing updates from Mac. ie. on two separate occasions I took updates only to find that the machine wouldn't re-boot. Issues were resolved using install disks, disk warrior and/or repeated booting.
    Anyway - today:
I installed the update (Security Update 2008-003 (power PC)). Restarted and all was fine. Sometime later, after considerable use, the machine went to sleep. When I tried to wake it it wouldn't do anything. Eventually a blank grey screen came up with the file icon which alternately flashed a question mark and the finder icon.
I looked on these boards for suggestions. The best one seemed to be boot from the install disks. Unfortunately there is already an audio disk in the drive. I looked for suggestions to eject but none worked. Eventually, I plugged in my bootable clone of my harddrive. The machine took matters into its own hands and booted from it.
Once up and running I ran disk utility to check the status of the internal drive. It doesn't come up in the display. Nor does it show on the desktop or the in the finder. Which suggests to me that it's died.
I then looked to see if I could eject the cd from the DVD drive. i found no icon for the cd on the desktop or in the finder. I checked the "about this mac page" and it tells me "No burning device was found." This in turn suggests that the DVD burner has failed along with the hard drive.
My immediate thought would be that both parts have just reached the end of their time and given up the ghost. I'm a bit surprised/suspicious though that they seem to have done so in the same moment. And on the day that I downloaded a Security Update.
Has anyone had a similar problem, if so what did you do? Can anyone suggest anything I may not have thought of to find my missing HD and DVD burner? Would I be best off going to the Mac store in London? Ultimately, is replacing them myself a realistic proposition?
    Help appreciated.
    Ewan

    Thanks Arnie
Have been thinking along those lines. Especially as, when I boot the machine from the external drive, I can hear the DVD drive whirring. So it's clearly not completely dead.

  • A disk in the DVD drive causes a crash, machine will not start

I have a fairly bizarre problem, searched, didn't find it in here so... maybe I am special. Anyway. I have a 2.4ghz MBP with 4GB of memory. I got it in November (with Leopard). It has worked without an issue until I started tonight to give bootcamp a go on it.
    Symptoms:
    - Leopard boots up fine, logged in, nothing else open
    - Insert any disk (DVD, CD-R)
    - Leopard crashes
    - continues to cycle through a restart but it keeps crashing waits 1 min, restarts, repeat
    - Even tried a Leopard disk
    Tried:
    - disk utility to look at things
    - can't load anything to check the hardware cause its cd based
What I did before it started going nuts?
I used bootcamp to partition the drive. This worked fine. Stuck the XP disk in and it read it fine. Machine rebooted to install XP, this was fine. Things went well until the XP install asked for a reboot. Then it restarts, disk failure. I eject disk and select OS X. Off we go, things are good.
I delete partition thinking something got screwed up. Tried again. This time when I put the XP disk in the thing crashes while in Leopard.
While I have typed this my machine has restarted a dozen times on its own. It is kinda funny to watch but *** has happened to it? I can't even re-install Leopard... no drive.
The DVD drive does spin up but after a few seconds it crashes. Any ideas out there?

    Maybe related...
Bought a 2.6G MBP yesterday, brought it home, booted up, everything great until I started loading my apps---CDs/DVDs would spin and spin, then eject---then Install Disc 1 froze the system. Can't eject the disc---onboard fans racing like jet engines and the keyboard area near the screen seemed very hot. Posted last night---someone thinks either bad optical drive or motherboard. About to go see a Genius now. For $3K+, this pretty much *****.

  • DVD drive issue and permissions repair

Forgive me if I'm combining two issues in this posting.  If they are not related I can separate them out.
I don't know if my drive is going, but I have a DVD for a tv show that I wanted to watch on my Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard (latest patches).  For a while now I've had to keep reinserting the disc because it's not registering.  I put it in, and can hear mechanisms, then it spits it back out.
I watched one disc, ejected it then tried to play another and it just would not load.
I thought of checking disk permissions, thinking maybe the OS had some permissions problems that may be preventing it from reliably reading the disc.  The disk utility reported a number of permissions errors and owner errors, so I repaired the permissions and it reported that it was completed successfully.  I thought I'd run the verify permissions again, just to make sure the errors had really been repaired, and they're still there - some of them were gone, but there were others reported.  I ran the repair and verify a number of times now and nothing's changed.
    My questions:
    1.  Could the problem I'm seeing with my DVD drive be related to permissions of some of the system files?
    2.  Do I have anything to worry about with the disk permissions not appearing to be repaired?
    3.  Would I gain anything by booting to install media and running the verify and repair from there?
    Thanks much in advance!

Could the problem I'm seeing with my DVD drive be related to permissions of some of the system files?
If you've repaired permissions, and you still have the problem, then the answer is no.
Do I have anything to worry about with the disk permissions not appearing to be repaired?
Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore
Would I gain anything by booting to install media and running the verify and repair from there?
    No.
