DVD Drive hanging system

Hi Everybody! Ive got an NEC 3500 DVD drive in my dual 1.25ghz system. It's got some kind of problem where after a period of time, sometimes a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes, sometimes several hours, the drive will become unresponsive, and any attempt by an app or the system to access the drive will render that application frozen and the only fix is to hold the power button and physically turn the machine off. It's totally intermittent! Sometimes, I will put in a disk and open it, then go to an enclosed folder, and the thing hangs. Sometimes, I can have a disk in there for hours and it will work just great. Ive tried all kinds of stuff and can't seem to find the problem, let alone the solution. Taking the drive out of the machine and putting it into a firewire case, it works fine, so it's got to be some kind of issue with the system. Any suggestions?

Uncheck "HDD sleep whenever possible" in SysPref's, also set Energy Saver to sleep NEVER if the first option does not do it..

  • Dvd drive hangs after an hour

I replaced the original super drive in my G5 dual 2.5 with a LaCie dual layer capable burner. It burns, reads, and writes fine, but everytime I leave a disc (cd or dvd) mounted in the drive for more than an hour without accessing it, the drive hangs, the disc will not eject, and the finder gives a spinning ball if I try to open the contents of the drive. I have to restart the computer in order to get the disc out, and often have to do a hard restart from the hang up if trying to access a disc after an hour.
    Any ideas ?
I updated the firmware and reinstalled the system since installing the drive, but there has been no change.

well, interesting issue you are having there. could be hardware/ could be software. could be firmware confusion.
if this was my issue , then i would do the following to try and isolate it.
    reset open firmware :
    restart holding appleoption O + F
in the text screen, type, " reset-all " , then hit return
also, i would reset the PMU ( power management unit )
there should be a reset button on your logic board near the memory card slots.
after these 2 resets, i would test for the issue to see if it persists. if the issue does persist, then it might be the optical drive. have you ever tested this drive out on a different unit? that would be my next step. i would put that optical drive in question into a different unit to see what happens there.

  • Dv9913cl Notebook not showing DVD drive in system or Device manager, and more

I recently reinstalled the operating system on my stepfathers Pavillion dv9913cl notebook because it was slow and old. After I reinstalled windows I installed all of the drivers from HP's website, and made sure windows was completly up to date. I checked to make sure things on the computer worked, but I forgot to check the DVD drive.
So today when he went to put in a DVD it did not work. I was not present when he and my mom first tried using it, but this is what they passed on:
After putting in a DVD it took a few seconds and then something(I couldn't get them to tell me what) popped up saying something about the DVD region. I couln't get a clear answer on what it told them. My mother said something about it being the wrong region and something about selecting things like US English, and I don't know how what actually popped up for them. I also don't know were this path took them and ended.
Next apparently my mother went searching online. She found a Ask Yahoo that I couldn't relocate that told her to go into help, about windows media player. Then to go to Organize, then layout and show menu bar. Then step two she wrote down is About Windows Media Player -> tech.supportinfo. Specific File to determin codec. Right click file in Library - Properties on file tab - Audio Codec/Video Codec. (I don't know what she was attempting to do here and couldn't get a straight answer. I think the ask yahoo post told her she couldn't play the type of file because of a missing codec, but I dont think that is the problem, I inlcuded what she did though incase somehow it did something bad)
She did some other searching and tried to get into device manager I think to see what it said about the DVD device, but I am not 100%.
**So this is the poiny where I come home. I sit at the computer and pull up device manager.  The DVD device is not listed. I looked at every single entry in device manager, nothing has an exclamation point, and nothing says DVD/CD device or anything close.
I went to HP driver website and pulled up the drivers for this laptop. There was not a particular driver there for the DVD player.
I resarted and went into the BIOS and went to the boot order options. The DVD drive does show up there. (I made no changes)
When I insert a DVD or CD nothing happens. I can hear the drive spinning, but nothing happens on the OS. nothing pops up. It doesnt show up in my computer, and I can't find the DVD or CD to play through any program.
I found this support article. https://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
I tried all 5 of the resolutions. For resolution 3 I got to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, but in the right pane there was nothing that said either UpperFilters or LowerFilters. When I did some searching I found some other people who had similar problems and fixed it by doing what is suggested in resolution 3 and deleting the entries for UpperFilters and LowerFilters, but they were never there for me to begin with.
Now I am at a loss on what to do next. It seems like when he first put the DVD in the computer it was recognizing the DVD since it said something about DVD region it must have known a DVD was in there, but I never saw that screen. By the time I got to the computer nothing happens when I put any DVD or CD in.
I apologize for the long post, and thank you for any help that can be provided. (Also I don't use Windows, so please try and explain things as layman as possible.)

    Hello RonFishing,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand the computer appears to be unable to play DVDs, and the required driver in Device Manager is not found. My response will not be as long as your post, but I will do what I can to assist you!
I do not know what Windows operating system you are running. This will be important in resolving the issue. In the meantime, I welcome you to try the steps in this HP document: Resolving DVD and Blu-ray Movie Problems (Windows 7)
Even though the document is for Windows 7, the steps are similar amongst all versions of Windows. Please try the steps and let me know the results.
Thanks for choosing the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Occasionally system hangs during eject of DVD-drive

I have an irritating problem where I cannot get rid off (yet).
When I am burning cd on nero (latest version) the system starts to hang when the DVD-drive is ejecting the CD -> I have to restart the comp.
Same when I use DVD Decrypter, when I create an ISO file on the hard drive from DVD. It starts to hang when he ejects the DVD.
I started to play around with the automatic eject settings on the drive itself and in the programs and try to set it to "do not eject", but it does't work.
    Any hints/ideas?
    .

    Thanks for the input.
I did not do so much until now...(time)
But what I did is send an email to Nero tech support with all the information included from all there Info utilities, which should help answering some support questions. I can tell you that the support is probably just as "good" as MSI's support. It took them 4 days to send a non helpfull answer... and I had to remind them about the request as well.
I now have latest version of Nero (6.3.1.15) and the drivers from Mega 180 cd.
I assumed that the drivers from my Mega 180 cd were the same from the web (2004-2-17) and that the less helpfull drivers -mentioned in the link by you Normunds- were shipped together with bios 3.0. (I have standard 3.30). But maybe that isn't so...
Anyway Mishima, you have the drivers from the web right (ITB)? And you have let's say half my problem..hmmm
Probably I will try out the following, and if the first of them doesn't help I take the next point and so on:
    * Install NEC 2500 latest firmware 1.07
    * Install the drivers from the web -ITB- (2004-2-17)
    * Install the drivers nVidia nForce 4.24 WHQL
Does anyone have experience with nVidia nForce 4.24 WHQL drivers ??

  • I need to reload system software on G5 tower but DVD drive is dead ...

My G5 tower won't boot. It hangs up just as the blue progress bar reaches all the way to the right. I'm sure I need to reload the system software, but the DVD drive is also on the fritz and I can't use it. I put an old G4 TiBook into target disc mode, hooked it up to the G5, held the option key down at startup and I was able to get the G5 to boot – so I'm sure the hard drive is not dead.
Any suggestions? How can I use an apple system DVD disc and reload the software? Is there another way? I looked at some old G4s I have lying around, thinking I would pull a drive out of there and use it, but it just looked too hard to do. Is there a way to use Carbon Copy Cloner? I have free firewire drive space. Can I just copy the system file from the G4 TiBook onto the G5?
    Sorry, I can't tell you the OS, I think it's 10.4.?, but I forget!

reboot the G5 from the Ti target disk, slip the DVD in when you hit the desktop, tell it to reboot from the DVD - open the install OS X icon from the disc, enter pw & click restart.
another thing you might try is imaging the dvd to a firewire drive or partition on the Ti book... backup the tibook first if you resort to that.

  • System recovery on Sattelite M70-204 PSM71E. The CD/DVD drive does not work

    Hello!
Can you please give me some help and advice on the way to resolve the following issues:
I have had over the last three months minor problems with Windows Installer: software updates could not always be performed successfully, an error message was issued by Windows Installer regarding Quick Time when I started the computer. Apart from it, the computer was runing correctly. I had plan to restore the system with the Toshiba CD in the coming weeks to correct the issues.
But since yesterday, I have had a new problem. The CD drive is not recognized anymore under Windows XP.
I have tried to repair the driver from the CD drive following the procedure described by Toshiba. It did not work. I do not know if it is an hardware or a software problem which prevent me to recognize and use the CD and DVD drive under Windows XP and I do not know either if I can still run anymore a Restore process.
_*1/If I launch a Restore process, I believe that, at the start ,the HD will be formatted. How can I be sure that my computer will be able to read the data from the Toshiba Restore CD?*_ ( I have today a computer which still works almost properly. I would not like to be stuck with a completely dead computer, if the Restore process fails due to the CD driver)
_*2/ Is it possible to restore without using the internal CD drive? (use of an external CD drive or external HD)*_
Thank you in advance for your help and advice!

    Please ignore my request!
I have been able to fix the problem by correcting the Register. The CD/DVD drive works now properly.

  • How do I run system recovery dvd from an external dvd drive?

I am having trouble trying to restore my DV 6000 (dv6915nr) from an external dvd drive.  I am aware that this laptop has had several hardware issues, including the loss of use of the internal dvd drive and have tried all the fixes that I could find, including changing filter settings in the registry, changinging the boot order in the bios and even removing the intenal drive.  Since none of these fixes worked, I removed the hard drive and installed window 7 Prodessional in a desktop computer.  After reinstalling drive in laptop, I installed all the Vista drivers from HP.  Computer works fine except for sound card and Nic that failed and have been replaced by USB devices.  Simce I am not 100% sure the hardware failures are motherboard failures and not software, I would really like to run my System Restore DVDs that I purchased from HP.  And that's where I need help.
I am A Plus and Network Plus certified, so I am pretty sure  that I have tried all the obvious soutions.  Evedrything turned on, checked the cables, accessed dvd in wimdows and even ran restore disk in a desktop machine to the point that it told me I was trying to restore the wong computer.  I downloaded a program called Win To Flash that allows you to copy a setup disk to an external hard drive, but that didn't work.  HP restore disk does not have  Setup file on it, so it wouldn't copy to drive.  Tried just copying the disk to external and that didn't work either.  Also tried switching drive letters D and E without any success.
    Bios choices are:
    USb floppy
    ATAPI cd/dvd rom drive
    USB diskette on key
    Notebook Hard drive
    Network Adapter
Original restore partition is long gone.
I would rather restore it with an external Hard drive, not an USB memory stick.  I think both would work the same.  I do have an USB floppy drive, if there is some way of starting installation from floppies.
Like I said, I really like the computer, even with all its faults, but I would like to restore it to its original  Operating System.

Some progress, I got it to try to boot from an external hard drive.  Downloaded a program called WINToboot. tried to run it, got as far as formatting my  hard drive and might have loaded some kind of boot program.  Would not copy my restore disks because they did not have set up program.  Copied both restore disks to hard drive and tried to boot laptop.  F0 produced choose external hard drive choice.  Got "no OS found" error. only choice ctl alt del. I think I am headed in right direction.  Just need to know what to load on external hard drive.

  • System won't boot to my internal DVD drive

After receiving an imminent HDD failure warning, I replaced my internal hard drive and have been trying to use the Recovery Media (DVDs) I created to reboot my system. I get the error message "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" even though I have chosen Internal CD/DVD ROM as the first boot drive choice. When I go into the Startup Menu at bootup there seems to be a conflict between F9 Boot Device Options and F10 System Configuration-Boot Order. F9 does not give me a CD/DVD ROM choice; only the internal HDD or a USB ext HD or key drive. Under F10 I can change the boot order to show the CD/DVD ROM as the first boot drive choice, but that never shows up under F9.  I am pretty confident my Recovery Media are good. But the system doesn't seem to want recognize any DVD.
It will, however, recognize USB devices. Is there a way I can configure the USB ext HD as a boot device?
By the way, when I reinstall the old HDD, the system works just fine (except for the warnings). And the DVD drive works fine, too.

It is possible the Recovery Disks are bad. Do you have another machine you could test them on to see if they are bootable? F9 should give you the cd/dvd option no matter what boot order is set in BIOS-If there is bootable media detected.
******Clicking the Thumbs-Up button is a way to say -Thanks!.******

  • SCVMM R2 Hangs on removing vmguest.iso from the virtual DVD drive

In addition to dealing with the "INCOMPLETE VM CONFIGURATION" (bug)  in SCVMM R2 (which is cleared only with a complete reinstall of the software and database), I have come across a new problem.
    1.  Find a machine with vmguest.iso in the virtual dvd drive.
    2.  Change the drive to "No Media"
    3.  Click "OK"
    SCVMM HANGS.

    Hi Sir,
    Sorry for the delay .
"SCVMM Hangs " happens on all VMs ?
Any operation of VM performed in VMM  will case this issue ?
Did you install newest update rollup for  VMM server ?
As for this issue , you may try to remove that hyper-v host then re-add it into VMM to check the result .
    Best Regards,

  • Does External DVD Drive rm475e work with a Windows 8 Operating System

It worked fine with Windows 7 but doesn't seem to work with Windows 8?

    Hello Orchard80,
Thats a good question. You never know about Windows 8.1 and compatability.
There is no driver to download because DVD drives all use pretty much the same generic driver that comes built into Windows already. So I logically one would think that it should work on 8 as well.
The manual states that it is supported from Win-2000 through Win-7 only. But it came out before Win 8 also.
Is the drive recognized in the device manager under CD/DVD drives? Type in Device Manager in Windows 8 Search and select it from the list.
If not, the only thing I can think of is to run the Windows Fix-it Tool to see if it helps.
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems/en-us
If it still is NOT recognized after the Fix-it tool, then apperently the drive just will not work with 8.
IF it is recognized in the system but wont work, there is something else we can try but I will wait to hear back from you first.

  • Can I restore my system from install discs when DVD drive is not working?

Can I restore my system from install discs when the DVD drive in my iMac G5 is not working?
There is a disc jammed in the drive and when I try to do an install in Target Firewire mode using a G5 Tower I get an error saying the software cannot be installed on this machine, before I can even select the iMac's drive. I'm using the grey software install discs that came with the iMac.
Is my only option to open up the iMac and get the jammed disc out?
    Thanks

You need to set up the FireWire Target Disk mode installation with the iMac as host, so that it runs its own install disk. The G5 tower should be the target, so that you are "borrowing" only its DVD drive.
Shut down the iMac. Put the iMac install disk into the G5 tower, and reboot the G5 tower into TDM by holding down the T key. Connect the FireWire cable and then restart the iMac while holding down the option key. Hopefully the iMac startup manager will see the install disk that is in the tower; if so then select it and boot from there.

  • DVD drive is not configured in system profiler

My dvd drive is not configured in the system profiler. This problem occurred when i inserted a dvd that couldnt be ejected or read by the dvd device. I tried every single way to eject the dvd but the dvd is still inside. Now, i have a dvd inside my dvd player that cannot be read or ejected even the eject sign doesnt appear like it was when i first bought the mac book pro. i really hope someone can fix my problem and thanks in advance...

Does yur SuperDrive make any noise at all. One thing you can try is holding down the trackpad clicker during startup. This should tell all removeable devices to eject. Otherwise, try continually hitting the eject button during startup.

  • System recovery on Satellite M100 due to CD/DVD drive not being recognised

    Hi.
My computer won't recognise the internal CD/DVD drive anymore (eg. if I go to rip a CD with Media Player it says to install a CD drive first).
I have followed the FAQs on the Toshiba support page, and it has lead me to do a System Recovery. I followed the instructions (switch off, start up while holding "0", release 0 when computer beeps ...) but it isn't working.
The comp starts beeping as expected, but when I let go of "0" it just starts up windows as normal.
Can anyone help? Do I need to do the recovery with a CD instead? Obviously that will be a problem if the drive doesn't work though :(

So... after months of trying to fix this issue it would make sense that less than an hour after I've put a post asking for help, the thing would fix itself for no reason.
Yep. Seems to be working now. I have no idea why :/

If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.
see > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.
For more on gray screen, see > Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
