Dvd drive noise at resume

On each resume from suspend dvd drive in my laptop makes some irritating noise, probably checking if there's a disc inside.
Anyone knows how to make it stop doing that, or disable it altogether?
I've tried:
modprobe -r sr_mod && modprobe -r cdrom
and it didn't help, /dev/sr0 is gone but it still makes that noise on resume.

Yeah me too, interesting enough it's happening on my Intel iMac and not on my macbook. I don't know what's causing though.

  • DVD Drive Noise

The last few days my DVD drive has been acting strangely. When I insert a disk it takes it like normal but then when it starts to read it and the disk starts spinning it makes a very loud spinning noise like a metal fan grinding on some other metal, if you will... The only way of stopping it is by holding the power button for 5 seconds to power down. When it starts up I have to continuously press the eject button until it eventually ejects. This is obviously not normal.
I was curious if there was anything I could try before contacting Apple about this. Thanks in advance for any help

    Any ideas? Thanks

  • Noisy DVD Drive - Noiser than usual

I just bought a 13" Macbook, making my Apple purchase total somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 machines. As everyone knows, when you power on a Macbook or Pro, the DVD drive engages, following my the Apple "Tone" and computer bookup. I noticed on the new 13" aluminum Macbook that this noise seems to be rather loud and very mechinical sounding. I went back to the store, but is much noiser than my apartment, and seemed to hear it there also, but I'm not sure if its to the same extent. Does anyone else notice on bootup that their DVD drive makes all sorts of funky noise.
    Thanks,
    Justin

I've noticed a similar problem as well. I got my first aluminum macbook on the 17th and noticed that it was actually pretty quiet, but I ended up taking that unit back because all the function keys were slanted. The one they exchanged it for has slanted function keys again lol (I guess I'll get used to it), but the superdrive does sound a littler noisier on startup and when I unlock the system after it has been sleeping. When I actually insert a DVD into the superdrive though it sounds exactly the same as my late 2007 white plastic macbook model. I don't think it's anything to be concerned about. Maybe the aluminum enclosure unibody is just the reason it sounds different.

  • CD/DVD drive noises

    Every time I:
    1. Insert a CD/DVD into the little drive slide on my macbook
    2. If the DVD I'm watching is loading to a new scene (lets say, a new part of movie previews)
    2. Log into my itunes on my desktop
It makes this relatively loud beep noise one time. Can anyone tell me why this might be happening? Thanks a bunch.

With the experience I have with laptop computers in general, I can say with almost certainty that these noises are completely normal. But considering I can't personally hear the noise, I can't be positive. To be safe, I would bring it to an apple store and have one of the staff at a genius bar take a look at it.

  • DVD Drive makes strange noises

    Hi,
I have a Macbook that whenever I put it into sleep the DVD drive keeps trying to eject a disk that's not in there, and continues to keep trying every 30 sec or so, and won't stop until I open the lid again.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I have this same problem. The eject routine runs every 10 secs for 7 attempts and then rests. Every 5 mins or so, the routine will run again every 10 secs for 7 attempts. After 5 cycles, it will stop and then the cycles will resume at a frequency that I have not been able to determine. Not a functional problem, but certainly annoying and enough noise to wake me up.

  • Dvd drive making noises and spitting out dvd

I don't know what's going on but whenever I put in a dvd the dvd drive makes a lot of noise which doesn't sound good, and sometimes it spits out the dvd or shuts the dvd program down and then my computer freezes on a black screen and i have to shut down my computer by turning it off. =(
This computer is about 8 months old and I don't think there should be any issues from my end. I have never dropped it or spilled anything on it. I unfortunatley never bought teh apple care....i know dumb! but nonetheless it's not bought. Does anyone know how or what i can do to resolve this issue besides not playing a dvd? Thanks any advice helps!

It sounds as if there's a mechanical failure with your SuperDrive. Since you're still under warranty, I would take the machine into an Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose and fix the problem.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • My CD/DVD drive keeps making noises with no disc inserted

My computer's CD/DVD drive makes the noise of it trying to pull in a disc whenver my computer is sat down or squeezed slightly from being picked up. I'm not sure why it keeps doing this. Is there anything wrong with it? Or is it just a little too sensitive?

Yes and no, the computer is obviously physically triggering the disk catch which may mean it's got a loose screw or something similar. It's advisable one way or the other to have it looked at or look at it yourself, the mechanism for the drive should be visible by removing the keyboard.

  • My dvd drive makes an awful noise when inserting dvd, I have a macbook PRo

My dvd drive makes an awful noise when inserting a dvd. Does that means it needs to be replaced?

It's more like a grinding sound. I was trying to convert  the dvd with Mpeg Streamclip when it started , After that I tried with Handbrakes and got the same sound. I gave it  a rest and inserted another dvd and it was fine. Now I don't know what to do, looks like the drive is ok..

  • Scary "rattling / vibrating" noise with iMac DVD drive

I have an iMac for 2 months now and experience problems with the DVD drive. With some DVDs (not all, but still too many for my taste) it spins around quite fast and makes a scary sound as if the DVD is vibrating (rrrrrrr) inside the iMac's superdrive. I am a bit affraid it will damage my DVDs. When I try to burn a DVD with iDVD or Toast the DVD is ejected by the system with a HW error.
I called the Apple help desk and was asked to burn a DVD with finder. That went ok. Next DVD with iDVD failed. I was asked to install iDVD again, because they thought it could be a software issue. The next DVD I could burn without problems, so the case was closed. Later burning some DVDs failed again, but at the moment the majority succeeds. And reading some already written discs makes sometimes a scary noise, but I can still read them.
I am not sure if I should call apple again, because it not always fails. It is very disappointing to be having these problems with my first Apple. Didn't expect that at all. Every time I insert a DVD now, I wonder what will happen. But it would be a pity to have to add an external dvd reader/writer to the beautiful integrated iMac.
Anybody a suggestion, or is it better to call Apple again?

I also have this problem with my 2.4ghz, 24" iMac. It started a few months back and it didn't seem to affect the media I stuck into it and for about 75% of the time the vibration was minimal. Now some DVD media are getting stuck in the drive and it takes a lot of tries with the eject button before enough of the DVD or CD shows itself to pull it out ... otherwise it gets sucked back in and I am back trying again.
What has just freaked me out is that some of the discs I have just burnt, when inserted, ask whether I want to write them i.e thinks they are blank ... when they go perfectly on my powerbook or my wife's G5 iMac. I just thought I would check out the support forums for a lead, but doesn't seem like a regular fault so its off to the repair shop under warranty (up to a week wait around here).
So can't help that much iDijkman ... I suppose get it fixed while you still have some warranty.

  • IMac DVD Drive--Loud Noises

Recently my iMac DVD drive has begun to make loud noises when a disc is inserted. The loud whirring, spinning, and clicking noises last for about a minute to two minutes before the DVD finally ejects (after many attempts). Nothing plays, the sounds just automatically start. I've read that lower quality/damaged discs can cause similar sounds, but I have used two different DVDs and get the same result when one has worked perfectly before. Is anyone aware of what the problem might be or how to fix it?
    Thank you!

  • Cd/dvd drive making noise

    Hi all!
I just got a brand new 20-inch Alu iMac with Leopard installed last month as an early Christmas present, my very first mac and love it. I have a couple of questions I thought I'd throw it to you experts out there.
Firstly, the cd/dvd drive is making a whirring noise, to me it sounded like a plane taking off, whenever I put in a disc. I have tried a preinstalled cd that came with my mac. I have read on the forum that some cd/dvd make noise. Should I be worried about this before my warranty expires?
Secondly, I am not sure if it is related. I tried to burn my playlist on iTunes to CD. It took multiple discs as I have a long playlist. After the first disc, I put in the next blank one. But the issue is after I finished burning the playlist and putting the cd in to test, the first cd has no info on it but the rest of the cds are okay. I have burned cds from iTunes on my old pc before and did not have any problems. Are both of these issues related? Do I need to take the mac into an Apple store and get it checked out?
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi Bbolin! Thanks for your response and suggestion to go to iTunes forum. I did have a look over there and there is a thread going on on this. Apparently there is a bug in the os. So, as soon as I get some more cds I will try burning at a lower speed. Thanks again for your help. Have a great 2008.

  • DVD drive often creates a noise

I have a pavilion g6 2314 AX notebook with windows 7 installed, from day 1 the DVD drive is making noise at regular intervals even if there is no discs in it.

There wasn't an early 2012 13" MacBook Pro - what you may have purchased in early 2012 was a late 2011 13" MacBook Pro.
If you're still under warranty - if it's not been one year past your purchase date - you can take you machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them fix the problem. If you're out of your one year warranty - and didn't buy the AppleCare extended warranty - it may cost you to have the drive 'fixed' (I guessing that it will have to be replaced).
    Good luck,
    Clinton

Are you sure it isn't the hard drive's sudden motion detector temporarily parking the HD heads?
