DVD Drive Non-Function Mac Mini 3,1 (late 2009)

Hi
The DVD drive in my Mac Mini has recently become non-functional, "About this Mac" sees the drive fine,
OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S:
  Model:          OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S
  Revision:          2AHI
  Native Command Queuing:          No
  Detachable Drive:          No
  Power Off:          No
  Async Notification:          Yes
  Bay Name:          Upper
But when you insert a disc there is no response, it does not see to attempt to read it just ejects after about 20-30 seconds.
Any suggestions as to what could be the problem? This issue started sometime after I upgraded the memory, but I cannot be sure that the two things are connected as I very rarely use the DVD drive and the first time I tried to use it was several months later.
Many Thanks

Optical drives are pretty short lived in my experience.
Might try a cleaning Disc.
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

hi, we are using mac mini's for our developement purpose. connecting the same through using Real VNC. Mac mini's are late 2009 and 2010. Now we have upgraded them to 10.8.5. after upgrading having display issues after launching the simulators, we are unable to view the icons we need to move the simulator (into different places) to view the icons.
Also we are having Mac book pro's (Late 2009 & 2010) after upgrading them to 10.8.5. Unable to launch the mac, getting only white screen with apple icon.
Let me know is there any specific Hardware (Graphic Cards) we need to use for the same.
Please provide me the early solutions.
    Regards,
    Suresh.

    Hi, try this first...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • Where can I buy a replacement DVD drive for a mac mini A1347

My mac mini is out of warranty and my toddler stuffed several discs into the drive slot.
Whenever it booted, it made a horrible ratcheting clicking noise, but couldn't eject anything.
I disassembled the entire computer, and pulled all 3 discs out with pliers. After reassembling, the computer works fine, but the DVD drive won't "catch" a disc and pull it in. I'm pretty sure some gear or something has been irreparably damaged, or that I bent it as I was pulling the disc out.
I've been having a difficult time trying to find a replacement drive to order anywhere.
Besides going with an external USB drive, does anyone know of the cheapest option for a replacement slot drive for the mac mini A1347. (AKA "mid 2010", AKA Core 2 Duo DDR3).
I don't want to haul it down to an Apple Store and pay a huge premium to have them diagnose and replace a part that I'm very capable of doing myself.

However when I had to replace a drive in a Mac mini, I bought a bare drive off eBay.

  • HT1539 I don't have a DVD drive on my Mac Mini. How do I redeem an itunes digital copy of Gamer?

Hi, my mac mini has no optical drive. How am I supposed to retrieve my digital copy of the movie "gamer?" from the itunes store. Its telling me I have to insert my DVD. Well its not physically possible. This is the stupidest error I've ever encountered in 20 years of being an apple user.

I have a computer. It is called a Mac Mini. I don't own any others. I will not buy a Superdrive either because I have no use for it. I contacted Apple iTunes Store support and so far they did not help me. Digital downloads from Best Buy have turned out to be fradulent. They owe me a copy and they should authorize it. My code is valid too. I have the discs right here. I will go nuts if they don't help me and so far they have not.

  • XBOX HD DVD drive and the Mac mini?

I hooked up the HD Dvd drive and it is recognized in both the Apple side and windows boot camp. I've tried both powerdvd ultra and windvd8 on the windows side to get the HD disc's to play but it says something about the video card not being supported when I try powerdvd, and when I try windvd it acts like it wants to play but does nothing at all. Has anyone got the xbox HD dvd drive to work with the mini and if so how?
oh...I have the mac mini Intel 1.66 duo upgraded to 2gb of ram.
    Thanks in advance

The Mac mini video chip (the Intel GMA 950) apparently does not support HDCP. There is a free tool from CyberLink (the authors of PowerDVD) to show if your computer is good enough to play HD DVD or Blu-Ray see http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/support/bdhd_support/diagnosis.jsp
Having run this myself, I can confirm it reports that the Mac mini video chip does not support HDCP. In theory you might be able to use VGA instead of DVI and still play HD DVD disk.
The above however applies only if you are running Windows on your Mac. While it is possible to plug an XBox 360 HD DVD drive in to a Mac running Mac OS X, because Apple are still prevaricating over whether they will support HD DVD, or Blu-Ray or neither they have not as yet released any software to play such disks even if you can plug a drive in.
I have seen reports that you can use the XBox drive on a Mac to play ordinary DVDs but it is not possible (yet) to do anything more than that.
Right now, not a single Mac model supports HDCP (nor do the Apple Cinema displays). There is a small possibility that Apple might be able to release a firmware upgrade at some point to address this.
*Really Apple, you are falling further and further behind. Not only do you not do HDCP, not only do you not do HD DVD or Blu-Ray, but QuickTime cannot do a decent job of subtitles, or surround sound, or multiple audio tracks. And all this from a company (Apple) supposedly synonymous with multimedia.*
Yes, the TV/Movie studios are idiots, yes DRM is a stupid idea, but come on Apple get a move on.

  • CD/DVD drive non responsive

Hi, I'm having, what seems to be a very common problem, with my cd/dvd rw drive that came as standard with my hp pavilion elite desktop pc, albeit with a slight twist in comparison with others here.
My dvd drive has functioned perfectly since i bought the system just over 5 months ago, today, for the first time i tried to burn a media dvd using windows dvd maker. half way through burning the disk the process stalled with an error message claiming the disk was corrupted and to insert another, healthy disk into the drive to continue burning, i chose to cancel the burning process thinking its was the windows dvd maker program. The disks are of high quality, not the cheap kind and i assumed micros**t was to blame. I thought little of it, these things happen but immediately afterwards I went to use the drive for its other intended purposes and it will not recognise any disks within the drive. Regardless of media or disk type.
I've run through a dozen suggested fixes here and on other forum boards with no success, the PC recognises that the drive is there, both in the main system folder (my computer) in the device manager and in the bios. It doesn't seem to have lost the drive, it just isnt functioning. I've tried clearing the filters (appears i didnt have any) driver re-install with a clean reboot with no luck, I've also opened the case and done the wire juggle which unsurprisingly, didn't help. The drive drawer functions fine, the drive just doesnt read any disk i place inside of it.
I place a cd/dvd in the drive and nothing happens. When i try to manually access the drive from my computer the dvd drawer ejects and i get a pop-up asking me to insert a disk, despite the fact there is already a disk inside. I've tried multiple dvds and cds and it does the same thing for each, nor can I get programs such as itunes or WMP to read from the drive, they all show the drive as being empty??
I tried the hp diagnostic thing too but i couldn't get the program to test the drive properly on account it depended on the drive being able to read a disk from within the drive, which it stubbornly refuses to do, so i cant tell if the problem is hardware or software based? anyone had anything similar and if so were you able to repair the problem? Im at my wits end and quite frankly I'm disappointed, I've had compaq presarios and hp pavilions before and they've all been solid platforms but having such a problem after only 5 months has seriously damaged my opinion of hp.
I should probably mention I've also tried using windows (of the colour 7) to diagnose the problem from the device's properties menu but windows is about as observant as an amnesiac chicken and repeatedly tells me the device is fine and dandy, go figure
Erm apologies about the obscene length and labyrinthine, rambling nature of the post by the way... heh
ANother edit, i should also mention i've tried the 8 step guide by raster blaster, with no success, alot of the steps don't seem to allow for a recognised drive that doesn't recognise a valid disk within it, if that makes sense. Even the windows diagnostic is skuppered before it can get going because it's convinced the drive is empty or the disk is incompatible regardless of how many disks i've tried in it.
    OS: WIn7 64bit

hi big_dave, thanx for the assistance,
device driver re-install was one of the first things i tried and while it re-installs the drivers on start up, the problem persists. I also took your advice and tried to search for a firmware update, but couldnt find one for my drive, so im assuming (possibly incorrectly hehe) that my firmware is up-to-date.
Just to clarify, the drive is recognised by windows and in the bios, I've tried using a command prompt from outside of windows and it recognises the drive but will not read any disks within it, i recieve the drive is not ready message, I've tried a driver re-install followed by a clean reboot. I've also tried the inbuilt win7 troubleshooter program but because the drive will not read from any disk i place into it, the troubleshooter doesn't even get anywhere, the tray ejects the disk and the trouble shooter just keeps telling me to insert a disk of a valid type, i've tried some dozen or so disks... sigh... I tried a system restore but then that didn't work and i also tried the hp diagnostic tool but i have a similar problem as with the win7 troubleshooter, the program attempts to run it's diagnostics but before it even gets anywhere the disk is ejected and the program tells me to insert a valid disk regadless of the fact i have tried numerous disks that correspond with the particular aspect of the drive im testing eg audio disks to test audio cd playback capability etc etc. I even opened the tower and tried disconnecting the drive at both the drive itself and the motherboard with no success. I haven't yet tried the CMOS switch thing but im not entirely sure what that is or what it does or if it would even help me (or make matters worse! lol)
As I say my drivers and firmware seem up-to-date, i've done a full system scan for viruses and and i've checked the drive for any visible physical damage (for what that was worth) and could find none and the registry file contained no filters to delete, it was clean.
Looking at this list im guessing my best bet is to replace the drive? A sore disappointment for such a recent purchase and if i thought it wouldn't take forever and a day to get a replacement from hp themselves i'd go about it.
I cant help but feel angry that hp clearly has made so little effort to correct software and hardware issues with their products, not to mention the use of substandard parts in their machines, sure a dvd rw drive is pretty cheap to replace and takes little fuss to install but it makes me wonder what might fail next that wont be so cheap and convenient to replace.
Still thnx for the advice Big_dave and good luck to anyone else having problems with hp dvd drives, may you meet with more success than I.

If just the hard drive is defective you could mke a bootable USB thumb drive or bootable Firewire HD. Not sure of the connecting cables for the monitor functions. This could provide the functions though.

  • External DVD to Match my Mac Mini?

I'm looking to add an external DVD drive to my system so that I can play my extensive collection of DVDs from two different regions.
Does anyone know of a vendor who sells external DVD drives to match the Mac Mini - same form factor, same color?
Also, I'm guessing USB 2.0 should be fine for watching DVDs, yes?
    Thanks,
    SM

Since your purpose in having two DVD drives is to be able to play DVDs with two different region codes (a change which the Mini allows to be made only 3 times for the built-in DVD drive), you might also consider the VLC (software) player.
I'm not sure about it's current status, but in the past it used to ignore region codes.
BTW I'll be interested to see if you can find an external DVD drive that matches the Mini, since most are trayloaders, and therefore rather different in dimensions.

  • What OS do the new non-lion mac minis use?

    What is it?

    Ebinellis is correct.
All new mac mini computers sold by Apple will have 10.7 Lion.
There are no new non-lion mac minis of this model without optical drive.
Old stock - new mac minis of the previous year with optical drive - the way they are still available at 3rd party retailers - come with 10.6 Snow Leopard. Upgradable to 10.6.8 via software update. And also upgradable to Lion.

  • Problems playing dvds on my new mac mini

I'm trying to play a dvd on my new mac mini & whenever I hit the play button I get error: -70025. I've checked the disc for scratches etc... but all seems fine there. Does anyone know what that error is about or have any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?

All i can think of is running a cleaning disk in your Mini's drive. I'd be surprised if the mini needed cleaning since it's so new but you never know. Another question that comes to mind is if that particular DVD has some copy protection that prevents it from being played in computers. Some music CDs have that type of protection.

No. There is no "USB Target Disk Mode".
Just so we're clear, when you start your Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM - holding T on startup), do you see a FireWire icon on the Mac mini's display? IIRC, it's not required that the Mac mini be connected to a display for TDM, but it would help diagnose whether or not the mini is actually starting in this mode.
