DVD drive pops open

The DVD Drive on my Pavilion DV6 laptop (Windows 7) pops open when I start up and intermittently after start up.
I used the device manager function to disable the dvd drive and this stops the problem so I guess that one of the applications is opening the drive.
Can someone please tell me if there is a way to identify which application is causing the drive to open.
Regards
Ed

Was online with tech support this afternoon and we seem to have solved the problem. Here is what we did.
First, modified the registry
Please try the below steps
Click Start on the Left Bottom of the Screen.
Click Start Search
Type “regedit” and Hit Enter
On the Left hand Pane you can find H-Key-Local Machine.
On the Left side of H-Key-Local Machine you can find “>” sign Click on that “>” Sign.
You can find “System”, just click on beside its “>” sign.
Where you can find “Current Control Set”, just click on beside its “>” sign.
Where you can find “Control”, just click on beside on its “>” sign.
Where you can find “Class”, just click on beside on its “>” sign.
Please look for “{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}”, just click on it(Not on the arrow beside it)
In the right side of the pane you can find ‘Upper Filter’
Please select ‘Upper Filter’and delete it.
Then choose the Lower filter and delete it.
In my case, I didn't have the Upper Filter, but I did have a LowerFilters
I deleted it and restarted and the drive still popped open but this may have helped for the next step.
Secondly, I opened up the device manager from the control panel and removed the "hp DVD" device. Afterward, I rebooted. The device automatically got re-installed.
For now, the door seems to be staying shut. We'll see how it goes over the next few days.

  • L305-s5933 dvd drive wont open

    hi.
Well I've been experiencing problems with the dvd drive in my laptop last week, I dont know when this problem started because I don't use the dvd drive very often but the problem is that the dvd drive won't open after the computer has been on for one hour or more, when the computer has only a few minutes turned on, I can open the drive and read any dvd/cd I want, but after one hour the freaking drive just stop responding to the eject button. Trying to eject using Windows software won't work either. The only way to make the drive work again is to turn off the laptop and turn it on again.
a few weeks ago I made a clean install of windows 7, so I'm guessing I forgot to install a driver or something?
    just to sumarize my situation:
-Dvd drive won't open after the computer has been on for a while. (Doesn't repond to  eject button or windows eject command)
-I have to turn off the computer and turn it on again to make the dvd drive work again
-I'm not sure if this problem started after i installed windows 7.
    Any help?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Just for the record.
The problem I was having with the DVD drive was caused because I didn't install an AHCI/PCIIDE patch that's is included in the drivers and applications recovery DVD. After installing this patch (is actually a registry patch) the DVD is working just fine, doesn't matter how long I use the laptop.
Even tough windows 7 supports natively AHCI mode for SATA devices,  DVD-rw drives in some (not all) Toshiba laptops have problems in the long run if you don't apply the registry patch.
I hope my experience helps others experiencing this problem.
    bye.

    HI,
I have HP 430 notebook that I use rarely. The DVD drive on drive is not opening by pressing button on dvd drive. MY machine is power on. Not sure if I need any special driver to open dvd drive on machine. The default microsoft driver with windows 7 professional are already on machine.

  • CD/DVD drive open on its own - Equium L40

    Hi,
I have a Equium L40-10X laptop bought recently from Pc World. It's been working fine until recently my cd/dvd drive popped open on its own. I closed it and then about 10 minutes later it did it again. This happens every so often. After a bit of research I found out it could have been a spyware issue. Scanned, and removed all traces etc. Problem appeared to be gone, but alas, the drive once again popped open.
Recently the drive is not reading discs as well. It seems to work when it wants for any time between 10 seconds and an hour at a time. The things got a mind of its own....and when it's not working, the button to open the drive doesn??t seem to work. I have to use a paperclip to open the drive.
Either I have a haunted laptop or there's something wrong.
Has anyone had any experience of anything like this before or have any advice on what to do?
    Thanks, Jon.

    Hi mate
I didnt notice something like this before but I presume its a mechanical problem.
Dont think 3rd party software (program, spyware, virus, etc) could cause this issue.
Additionally you have said that the drive is not reading discs as well.
In such case I would recommend contacting the ASP in your country and to ask for the drive check and if necessary for an ODD drive replacement.
If the warranty is valid the replacement should be done for free.
    Best regards

  • CD/DVD drive opens on start and restart

This has been a problem ever since I installed 10.3.9 about a year ago.
Every single time I start up or restart the machine the CD drive pops open.
I'm running a 400 MHz PowerPC G4 (grey tower) and I've installed a LaCie CD/DVD drive. The drive was installed long before the upgrade to Panther and it was not a problem in OS 9 nor in 10.1.x.
Aside from being annoying, it means that I can't start from a CD, which I need to do to run things like Diskwarrior.
    400 MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Are you using an Apple keyboard and mouse? I just did the firmware update on a 400MHz Sawtooth G4, and the problem you describe started happening to me. I was/am using a non-Apple keyboard and a PS2-USB converter to plug it into the Mac. I just did the 4.2.8 firmware upgrade, and now the drive tray opens on boot/startup. It didn't do that before the firmware upgrade! I hate it when updates/upgrades create more problems than they solve. Anyway, I borrowed a friend's Apple pro keyboard and mouse, and with those plugged in, everything is normal. So if you aren't using an Apple keyboard, you might try plugging one in to see if that fixes the problem.

  • CD/DVD Drive Won't stay open

Never had a problem like this before....
On both drives on my Mac Pro, I can eject both fine, but they instantly close.
When burning a DVD i have to open it and throw the disc in before it closes, like an old west gunslinger with quick reflexes. Same thing when getting a disc out, gotta be like the karate kid.
Does it all the time now without fail, with no programs running after a fresh restart. Don't know any specific thing that caused it, just one day I went to burn a disc and it closed before i got the disc in...
    Any ideas??

I have the opposite problem. Brand new Mac Pro, and the CD/DVD drive drawer opened on the first power up after receipt of shipment from Apple. Every time I close the drawer, it immediately opens up again. The Disk Utility "Info" page shows that the software detects the drawer is open, so it's not a reversed sense problem.
I will be trying to find out how to get Apple to fix this post haste on their dime. My CD/DVD drive is essentially DOA. Don't they test these machines before shipping them?!

  • Wrong DVD drive opens on 2009 Mac Pro

    Hello,
I have a 2009 Mac Pro with two DVD drives.  Since upgrading to Mavericks, I've noticed some unusual behavior:
    1.  Ocassionally, the incorrect DVD drive ejects/opens. For example, when I attempt to open the top drive, the bottom one opens, and vice-versa.
    2.  Ocassionally, when I simultaneously burn 2 DVDs of the same items, I find that one of the DVD drives burns all of the items without problems, while the other one only burns a small number of the items.
    3.  After inserting a blank DVD, and selecting the "Burn (item name) to disc" from the right-click menu, a long time passes before the "Are you sure you want to burn..." dialogue box appears.
Has anyone else experienced this constellation of symptoms?  Are they connected?  And what sorts of remedies have worked?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi-
A PRAM reset should clear that up.

  • DVD Drive Opens by itself

For the past couple months my DVD drive keeps opening by itself after booting up and random times. I tried the BIOS update (tried F29, F24. F22) that I saw in  few forums but it keeps happening. Model is dv6t-7000.
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi Acottin,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion dv6t-7000 Notebook and  DVD drive keeps opening by itself.  Here are some steps to check on the DVD player.
    1. Make sure that when you open the DVD door that there is not something stopping it from closing all the way
(a CD/DVD cleaning kit available at electronics stores).
    2. Make sure all updates have been done on the HP Pavilion Notebook.
    3. There is a firmware update that might help.
    I hope this is helpful.
    Thanks.

  • CD/DVD Drive no longer reading discs

    HP Pavilion g6-1b50us Notebook PC
    Windows 7 64-bit
I've only had my laptop about a month and a half. To transfer items from my old laptop to the new one, I used the CD/DVD drive to copy items over. It worked beautifully at that time.
Tonight, I went to install a new program I just received. Its on CD-ROM. I placed it in the drive, it popped up with the "run or open" prompt. Pretty straight forward and normal. I clicked run/install and... the drive started making noises like it was either off balance or hung up or... something. After waiting much longer than it should have taken to read the disc, I just clicked the button to open the drive (and essentially cancel the install). No problem, the disc slowed like normal and the drive popped open.
Hmmm... So I did a reboot. Tried again. The run or open prompt came up. I canceled it this time, and went into the computer and right clicked the CD/DVD drive (where it showed the proper title of the disc) and clicked open. IT made the weird noises again and... nothing. I closed out the computer prompt, tried to open the drive again to stop it, and this time i had no luck. It just... sat there. So I ended up doing reboot.
Reboot. Got the disc out. Decided to try the disc in a different computer. Maybe I got a bad program. Nope. It worked like a charm, ready to install elsewhere.
I went BACK to my HP, tried the disc a third time. This time... nothing. No prompt. I went into Computer. No CD title in the CD drive. I clicked on it, and it started spinning (again making the weird hung up/off balance noise) and eventually came back saying there is no disc in the drive.
My various steps to fix things have included:
-- making sure all the drivers, BIOS, etc. updates are installed. All are up to date.
-- Did a system restore point a couple weeks back to see if that helped. No luck. Undid the restore point.
-- Microsoft Fix-It thing. Couldn't do anything because it would never read that there was a disc in the drive in the first place!
-- Did HP System Troubleshooting. Same problem as the Microsoft Fix-It EXCEPT when I used a blank CD-R.
-- Eventually did get it to also read a DVD-R disc. Seems willing to write to disc, but not read???
-- Uninstalled the DVD/CD drive in Device Manager. Let it reinstall the drivers on its own.
-- I've tried an audio CD, a video DVD, the program I am trying to install, and the blank discs. The only things it will read now if the blank discs. (And even then, it takes a few minutes to do that.)
In device manager, it is listed as "hp DVDRAM GT31L SATA CdRom Device."
I'm at my wits end. ANY suggestions I've not tried? Frankly, I NEED to install this program to do my job. This needs to be fixed, like, yesterday.

It is a bad piece of hardware. You have eliminated all other possibilities. You need to replace the optical drive. In the meantime you can install the software across a network by making the optical drive on another computer within the network shared and access the files on the disk from the laptop. Or you can get a usb dvd drive or you can copy the contents of the cd onto a flash drive and install from there.

  • DVD drive door broken?

It's been an accident waiting to happen. And happen it did, just a few moments ago.
With the DVD drive tray open, I stupidly swivelled in my chair and banged my knee against it. Miraculously, the tray slid back in - but the drive door remained open. Repeatedly opening and closing the tray doesn't fix it so I have to presume some sort of physical damage to the door itself.
DVDs and CDs still play perfectly, but it is obviously not a good idea to use this machine while the drive door is open for fear of disrupting the internal air-flow cooling.
Stupidly, I've never actually studied the drive door mechanism on this Mac Pro so I have no idea how the door behaves on opening or closing, i.e. whether it slides up or down vertically like an elevator, or pivots up or down on a horizontal hinge to lie flat while the tray opens. And I've never installed a second drive in this machine so I've nothing to compare it with.
Looking at the front of the machine now, the door appears to have slid down vertically directly below the drive opening, out of the way of the tray, its upper edge parallel with the bottom lip of the opening.
Can anyone please offer guidance or advice on this?

    You are welcome, Dave.

  • What is keyboard combination to pop open DVD drive?

I was on the phone with Apple support a while back when having major start-up problems with my desktop.
The technie told me what key(s) to hold down while rebooting so that the DVD drive would pop open (so I could quickly shove my system CD in there).
Of course, I didn't write down that instruction and now can't remember what it was .... and can't seem to figure it out.
    Anyone?
    Using Snow Leopard v 10.6.

Hold down the mouse when booting up or restarting the computer.
