DVD drive scratching discs.

Anyone else noticing this?
Got a brand new iMac 27" i5.
Multiple discs have gone in & had issues reading... they come out with a circle scratched all the way around. Checked with freshly burned discs with no problems on other macs but when they go into the iMac they come out scratched & often now unusable in any system.

We discovered the issue with scratched disks after 10.6 experienced some serious problems with a Helvetica Nueue font, at which point we tried wiping the system installing 10.5. When our IT people couldn't get 10.5 to work, we tried 10.4, only to find out that the brand new, 2700 dollar 27" iMac decimated both disks.
The fact that Apple considers this user error and not a real issue with the hardware is insulting. A year and a half ago, my brand new 24" iMac had to be returned and eventually replaced with a newer model, and I've had numerous issues with battery swelling on my Mac Book Pro. Now this problem, which comes with an extra kick to the butt, considering I had a "genius" tell me to be more careful about inserting my disks. Guess what, Genius? I've been inserting disks in older iMacs the same way for 2 years, and never had an issue with scratching.
I have been an avid supporter of Apple since I started in the design industry 13 years ago, but lately, due to the increasing shoddiness of the products and the level of humiliation and condescension I experience at the genius bar, I'm seriously considering wiping my hands of the brand and buying a PC. At least I can anticipate the crashing issues, and buy an external drive for regular backup.

  • Drive scratching discs

I am having problems with my CD/DVD drive. When I put a CD and eject often the MacBook Pro scratches the disc. Its not every time but the cast majority. Sometimes it scratches the disc on insertion and on ejecting so sometimes it leaves two nice long scratches. Any ideas as I have ruined most of my CD collection?

First, stop inserting CD's or DVD's until you've fixed the problem.
If the disk is getting scratched, then there's something protruding in your DVD drive, and you should be able to locate it by the scratches. It could be the lens failing to retract or focus correctly, but I don't think that's as likely as some debris stuck in the drive.
If you can't disassemble the drive to clean it, a new replacement is only about $ 30.

  • My CD Rom, DVD Drive says "Disc is full when it's brand new.

I have downloaded burner software. Autoplay does not show. My CD Rom/DVD drive will read a disc but will not format or burn a disc. A new disc will show as full or no disc. I'm using Windows 7 Professional as my OS. and I have downloaded A Shampoo, burnaware free and expressburn software.

What type of DVD are you attempting to burn:  DVD -R or DVD +R?  Some burners will accept either format but some are type specific.  Try using the other format (-R if currently using +R; +R if currently using -R) and see if that helps...

  • Help - DVD drive eating discs

I'm sick over this. Have seldom used the DVD drive on my iMac 17" FP--so it should be in excellent condition, but today, when trying to play an audio CD, the drive literally ate the disc. It made a ferocious rasping sound. I ejected the media. The bottom had been so severely abraded it looked as if it had been spun on a lathe.
No, this machine is no longer under warranty. I dare not imagine how much Apple would charge to fix it.
How can I repair this? Is it even possible? Might I be better off attaching an external DVD drive via FireWire?
    Appreciate hearing from you,
    JLS

    xfm,
I too have the exact same error messages, but with a UJ-846 drive and Verbatim DVD-R 100-pack spindles.
My drive reads CD/DVDs OK, no problem, but gives problems when I put in a blank disc. I had this problem a few weeks ago with CDs as well, but then opened up the Mac mini and 'cleaned' the Superdrive with some compressed air, and that seem to have sorted the problem then.
Today though, for some reason NOTHING works, I even left the Mac mini 'naked' (without casing) while trying ten times and blowing air in between each time.
I have two batches of Verbatim DVD-R (100packs) bought in two different stores about a month or so apart, and one batch of CD-Rs that are yet another make. All of them with the same problem.
I think this is a hardware problems and it absolutely stinks that it only happens after the Apple warranty has expired. I've done about a 100+ disks on the Mac mini, which in my mind is hardly any at all, so it can't be 'worn out'.
Any ideas, or anyone with leverage at Apple that can kick some a*s
PS. I also have a MacBook Pro C2D with a busted spindle in the SuperDrive (UJ-857D), so me no like SuperDrives very much.

  • My iMac's DVD drive launches discs across the room when I eject them.

    Hi.
I was wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem, and also, if anyone might have a solution for it.
As of recently, [I don't know the exact date that the problem began, but it's been awhile], whenever I eject a DVD from my iMac's DVD drive [by either ejecting it in Finder, or by pressing the keyboard's Eject button], instead of just coming out halfway like it used to, the drive now launches the DVD across the room.
I'm starting to get annoyed by this problem, especially when I burn something and am not around to catch the disc when it comes flying out, and later find it lying on the floor in the corner of my room.
So does anybody know if there is anything that I can do about this?.
I did that online-chat thing on Apple's website, and the guy told me that I have to bring it in to a service centre, and then disconnected.
I'd like to avoid doing that if possible.
Also, I don't even know of any [or if there even ARE any] that are in Montreal, Quebec, [which is where I live].
Oh, and I bought an AppleCare Protection Plan with the iMac when I bought it last January [2005].
Soooo... Does that do anything for me?.
    Thanks so much!.

    Hi Steven,
I had the same thing happening with mine. When I was on with Apple Care, they asked me if I would be willing to send them my computer in exchange for a new one (refurbished). It turned out they new about the problem & are trying to figure it out with computers that are actually experiencing the issue. This was just a couple of weeks ago, so you might call & check about it. They cover all shipping costs.
    Good luck

  • Drive scratches discs

After a lot of troubleshooting and re-installing Boot Camp and Windows XP I discovered that my Optical drive in my iMac has been scratching my Imac discs.
My Mac OSX install DVD keeps getting stuck into wait mode when I try to use Boot Camp drivers. And today i noticed that my Applications CD is also scratched. How do I get them replaced?

I believe apple will replace the dvds for a small nominal charge.  You need to give them you machine's serial number.
As for the dvd player.  I know the dvd players themselves are pretty cheap.  It's the labor that's the the bigger cost (I guess that's true for most anything these days).
If you are willing to do it yourself then googling "replace optical drive in imac" has pleny of hits.  Also iFixit has a lot of info on this as well.

  • Cd/dvd drive ejecting discs

all of a sudden my powerbook ejects cds and dvds without reading the media. the motor goes through its few second start up process but spits the disc out. not media related as these are discs that have played before. any ideas?

Have you put the data-side of the CD/DVD down ? This is not meant offending, but some people are just need to turn upside down the CD and it works
Note that unusually shaped CDs cannot be used. Also ensure that the CD/DVD is clean. Can you read them in other drives ?

  • DVD drive rejects discs

My 1.1 mini (2005 or so) is getting balky, slow and unstable. I got Macware's macTuneUp as a starting point. System requirements are good but my mini won't accept the disc - it simply ejects with no error message. Two restarts and the problem remains. Drive spools up then pops out the disc. I tried music CD's and the machine accepts them. I had hope for this utility but the machine ignores the disc. HELP!

It could be that the drive died. You can use an external USB drive. One with a separate AC power works better since the USB ports on the older Macs do not supply that much power for a bus powered drive.

  • Dvd/cdr drive scratches DVD's and cd's

I have had my MBP for a little over 2 months and have loved it so far. It works great except for it has scratched at least 5 DVD's at different times. Some work fine but I refuse to load a CD or DVD in the drive anymore. What happens is it will be playing a DVD or CD and get about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the disc and then start spinning faster and will stop playing the dvd or cd. At that point it makes it nearly impossible to eject it until I do a hard restart. When i look at the bottom of the disc after it has been ejected, there is a almost perfect cylindrical scratch about 3/4" from the edge of the disc. I Work as a concert sound engineer and record shows onto my laptop and then have to burn the show discs after the show. Because of this issue I have bought a external DVD/ CD burner. Not something you should have to do after paying nearly $3000 for the supped up model of a MBP. Also, upon calling apple for service or inquiry, the first thing the lady asked was if I had the apple protection plan for my MBP. I did buy the protection plan when I bought my computer, but why should that matter when calling for assistance. I should have 1 year support even if i had not bought the protection plan. In any case, the lady told me that they are not responsible for any damage the computer has done to cd's or DVD's and that I will need at least 14 business days to send it off. Being that this is my work computer, and I am on the road on tour most of the year, that is going to be hard to do. Also, she said I should buy a back up hard drive to back up my MBP before I send it back because it may be reformatted. Isn't that convenient. Spend even more money that I shouldn't have to. Don't get me wrong, I do love apple products, and i do understand that there will be small issues here and there and things do break, but anytime I deal with Apple customer support, whether it be ipod issues in the past or my current problem, it makes me reconsider ever buying an apple product. I'm done venting..... So, does anyone else out there have the same issue with the superdrive scratching discs.
    thanks
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Your SuperDrive is defective. Apple has offered to repair it. I'm not sure what the problem is or what your purpose in posting is...other than, perhaps, to troll.
That said, it is always advisable to back up a drive before sending a machine in for repair; the odds are that Apple will not need to reformat it, but why take the chance? You don't need to back up your machine to an external hard-drive -- you can easily copy your documents to a CD or DVD (since you admit the drive works sometimes). That said, you can get a 250GB external hard drive for $100 -- a reasonable investment for piece of mind. Hard drives fail. It is not a question of it, but when. Do you really never intend to back up your machine?
If you have a local Apple retail store, make an appointment with a Genius there, show him/her the issue, and ask that the store order a replacement part in. They can call you when it arrives and do the repair on-site minimizing your time without your machine.
If there are no stores nearby, then go with the Apple repair service. Turnaround on most repairs is quite fast -- I've never had to wait 14 business days for any repair, on any machine from Apple, including my MBP.
Net-net: Apple is honoring its warranty. If you don't like the terms of said warranty, you should have considered that when buying the machine.

  • Drive Scratches CD/DVD

I've had my Macbook Pro for not even 3 months and I am having issues with the slot loading drive scratching my cds/dvds. Even when I watch a movie, I barely even move my laptop and I hear the sound everyone wishes they didn't hear. Is there anything I can do to stop this. I mean honestly, the last laptop I had never did anything like this. Thank you.

*DON'T move your MBP when a disc is spinning in the optical drive.* At the high spin rates that discs reach while playing, they acquire a lot of gyroscopic inertia that tries to keep them spinning in exactly the same plane when the machine shifts, causing them to scrape against the inside of the drive casing or other parts above or below the spinning disc.
If your discs are being scratched even when the machine isn't moved at all, then you have a hardware problem that needs repair.

  • Optical Drive Scratching my DVD on the right side

My DVD drive on my MacBook Pro 13.3 Mid 2010 model is catching on the right hand side as I insert a disk.  This is putting a slight scratch on the right hand side of the disc that is inserted.
    How can I fix this?

good news is a new Superdrive (internal) made by Panasonic only costs $40
You could watch an Ifixit.com  video on replacing the Superdrive, ...its very easy, however I used to fix laptops, so my 'easy' maybe someone elses "hard".
In any respect, at worst, you could buy the Superdrive new on ebay or OWC and have a computer repair place install it for , who knows, somewhere around $40, $50
FIx it yourself depends on a LOT on what your skills are in such things.  Of which I know nothing about that specifically.
In laptop parts replacement on a scale of 1 to 10, its about a 2 or a 3 (easy).
check you dont have something metal hanging in the loading bay of the superdrive, that felt lining you see.  DONT stick anything inside, but just see if you see some foreign debris there scratching same.
otherwise the loader or internal tray of the superdrive is scratching your DVDs / disks.

  • CD/DVD Drive no longer reading discs

    HP Pavilion g6-1b50us Notebook PC
    Windows 7 64-bit
I've only had my laptop about a month and a half. To transfer items from my old laptop to the new one, I used the CD/DVD drive to copy items over. It worked beautifully at that time.
Tonight, I went to install a new program I just received. Its on CD-ROM. I placed it in the drive, it popped up with the "run or open" prompt. Pretty straight forward and normal. I clicked run/install and... the drive started making noises like it was either off balance or hung up or... something. After waiting much longer than it should have taken to read the disc, I just clicked the button to open the drive (and essentially cancel the install). No problem, the disc slowed like normal and the drive popped open.
Hmmm... So I did a reboot. Tried again. The run or open prompt came up. I canceled it this time, and went into the computer and right clicked the CD/DVD drive (where it showed the proper title of the disc) and clicked open. IT made the weird noises again and... nothing. I closed out the computer prompt, tried to open the drive again to stop it, and this time i had no luck. It just... sat there. So I ended up doing reboot.
Reboot. Got the disc out. Decided to try the disc in a different computer. Maybe I got a bad program. Nope. It worked like a charm, ready to install elsewhere.
I went BACK to my HP, tried the disc a third time. This time... nothing. No prompt. I went into Computer. No CD title in the CD drive. I clicked on it, and it started spinning (again making the weird hung up/off balance noise) and eventually came back saying there is no disc in the drive.
My various steps to fix things have included:
-- making sure all the drivers, BIOS, etc. updates are installed. All are up to date.
-- Did a system restore point a couple weeks back to see if that helped. No luck. Undid the restore point.
-- Microsoft Fix-It thing. Couldn't do anything because it would never read that there was a disc in the drive in the first place!
-- Did HP System Troubleshooting. Same problem as the Microsoft Fix-It EXCEPT when I used a blank CD-R.
-- Eventually did get it to also read a DVD-R disc. Seems willing to write to disc, but not read???
-- Uninstalled the DVD/CD drive in Device Manager. Let it reinstall the drivers on its own.
-- I've tried an audio CD, a video DVD, the program I am trying to install, and the blank discs. The only things it will read now if the blank discs. (And even then, it takes a few minutes to do that.)
In device manager, it is listed as "hp DVDRAM GT31L SATA CdRom Device."
I'm at my wits end. ANY suggestions I've not tried? Frankly, I NEED to install this program to do my job. This needs to be fixed, like, yesterday.

It is a bad piece of hardware. You have eliminated all other possibilities. You need to replace the optical drive. In the meantime you can install the software across a network by making the optical drive on another computer within the network shared and access the files on the disk from the laptop. Or you can get a usb dvd drive or you can copy the contents of the cd onto a flash drive and install from there.
