DVD drive sharing

Hi all,
I have an iMac and Mac Mini. The DVD drive on the iMac is not working and I would like to install iLife 09 on it. I thought I could use the DVD drive on my Mini to do this? I have CD/DVD sharing enabled on both machines. I inserted a disc in the Mini to see if I could install it on my iMac but no go. Is this only available for a computer with no optical drive? In Help, it was mentioned to use the DVD sharing software which probably comes with the Airbook but I thought it was included in a later Leopard update? Anyway, how can I install iLife on my iMac?
Thanks,
Jason

What you are doing is quite unnecessary. Turn off both computers then connect a Firewire cable between them. Boot your iMac into Target Disk Mode. Boot the Mini normally. After the Mini starts up you should see the iMac's hard drive on its Desktop. You can then use the DVD drive to install the software. Just be sure you switch the install location to the iMac.
If the drive on your Mini is a removable one, then make things even simpler by just connecting it directly to the iMac in order to install the software. Or you can download the Trial version from Apple and install it. When your copy arrives in the Mail you can simply enter the serial number for the Trial version. Don't even need to use the DVD.

  • DVD drive sharing issue

    Hi,
how can I create my music library in iTune (to sync with my iPod) on my Macbook Air since remote DVD sharing from my other Macs does not let me do it? Apple selling point for not having a DVD drive on the Macbook Air is that you can use DVD drive sharing.
    drive.
I'm hoping for an official answer from Apple since, I own the origininal audio CDs, and all the Apple hardware and software and just trying to do what is advertised as possible without infinging anyone's property rights.
    Thank you.

    Could anyone please help?

  • How to install Snow Leopard on a Mac with busted dvd drive

My problem is that my Mac Mini doesn't read all CDs or DVDs - including the new Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard that I just bought. From the support articles, I figured that I could install remotely, as you do if you have a MacBook Air. I couldn't get it to work, until I read this article:
    http://jasonevangelho.com/2008/11/02/how-to-really-enable-remote-disc-dvd-drive- sharing-non-air-macbook/
All it took was two commands in Terminal.
I hope this will be helpful for others too.

Snow Leopard (SL) upgrade in my mac mini failed part way through and when I tried to re-do the upgrade, it would give me a blue screen (via DVI to my HD TV).
So, following the advice I found elsewhere, I did the following:
Booted up my 24" iMac, inserted SL disk into iMac.
Turned off mini, connected mini to iMac w/firewire cable.
Started mini and pressed and held the T key on the mini keyboard until it mounted on my iMac (seen in Finder) as a hard drive.
Started SL installation icon (iMac) and indicated that I wanted to install on the mini hard drive.
It went through a number of steps, then asked AGAIN which drive I wanted to install SL.
Then took quite a long time (upwards of 1.5 hours) to install, and the estimated time left during the install would sometimes appear frozen at 40 minutes, but the blue bar kept extending indicating it was making progress.
I was able to then boot SL on my iMac off the mini hard drive and configure everything (making sure that back to my Mac/mobile me was up and running and the proper in home network was correct).
Then "shut down" the iMac (which was still running off the mini hard drive), then powered down the mini.
Moved the mini out to it's normal place and reconnected to the HD TV and started it up and everything was perfect.
BTW, as many people know, if you're having video out difficulties with your mac mini, it's nice to be able to go "back to my mac" via another iMac to adjust the configuration. It's saved me a couple of times.

  • I have a MacBook Pro with no DVD drive (Remote Install-ish issue)

1 MacBook Pro sans DVD, blank HD.
1 MacBook Pro with DVD, under Lion.
    1 Firewire cable.
1 Leopard / Snow Leopard install DVD.
Can I install SL on my old MBP using the DVD on my new MBP via FW ?

    My apologies for writing gibberish.
I thought this was a more common issue, as I have read a lot about DVD drive sharing and Remote Install but I am not able to find a straight answer to my very simple situation.
I have one old MacBook Pro that I bought the year 2006. It's the one sporting the Silver keyboard. The DVD drive is Broken (yes, there's a third option smarty pants. ). The Hard Drive in here is Erased.
I have a new (not retina drive not yet) 2011 MacBook Pro with the Black Keyboard. It came with Snow Leopard preinstalled. Afterwards I installed Lion from the app store, and much afterwards I fabricated a Bootable-Lion-Installer-USB thingy and installed it again.
Remote Install is Gone on Lion. They say the only option was firewire so I go and buy the firewire and it's still not straightforward. They say just click on the installer and choose the firewire Hard Drive (MacBook Pro) as destination. If I click on the installer it just tells me Leopard cannot overwrite Lion, which I already know.
So my original question was, trying (and failing miserably) to avoid all danger: If it is possible to install Leopard (The OS that comes in the black and purple hollographic box with a big X) using the Install DVD inserted into the DVD drive of my new 2011 Black keyboard MacBook Pro with a Bootable-USB installed Lion OS connected with a 6 pin to 9 pin FireWire cable to an old MacBook Pro bought the year 2006 with a Silver keyboard and a broken DVD drive and which by the way has the hard drive already erased.
And if it is, How can it be achieved.

  • DVD Drive Replacement

So... the situation is I can't use my DVD drive... I don't need any help on how to fix it or what to check since I've already gone through the problem/situation... does anyone know a different way where I can access/use my dvds... such as cd/dvd sharing on a different computer and use it from there... I would like any idea/suggestion... when I say that I mean like EVERYTHING/ANYTHING. I want whatever ideas you have 'cause I don't have any and I really badly want to use my dvds. If all else fails I will buy an external dvd drive or get a dvd replacement...

    See if this helps:

  • HT5287 If DVD Movies, Audio CD's and even burning CD and DVD's are not supported, what is the point of DVD & CD Sharing then? Wouldn't it just be better to remote in or use a thumb drive if it's only able to be used for data transfer?

If DVD Movies, Audio CD's and even burning CD and DVD's are not supported, what is the point of DVD & CD Sharing then? Wouldn't it just be better to remote in or use a thumb drive if it's only able to be used for data transfer?
Or am I missing the bigger picture?

As long as you have a Superdrive or an external burner/drive, burning, watching, installing, etc. from CD or DVD will work just fine. And so will sharing.

  • DVD drive - screen sharing

I have a PowerMac G5 running headless and I control it from a Mac Pro via Screen Sharing. How do I open the DVD drive? In Screen Sharing, pressing the media eject key opens the tray on the Mac Pro, not on the PowerMac.

add an eject button to the menu bar on the G5. on the G5 go to /System/library/CoreServices/Menu Extras and double-click on Eject.menu.

  • Samba + Sharing Mac's CD/DVD Drive

    Hello all,
Okay, this should be simple but I don't think Apple wants me to do what I'm trying to do. I've been looking everywhere for a solution. Here it goes...
My set up: Using SAMBA to share Mac OS X's /volumes using this samba declaration:
    [Volumes]
    comment = Mac's mounted Volumes
    path = /Volumes
    browseable = yes
    read only = no
    create mode = 755
Simplistic and gives me access to all mounted volumes on the Mac from my PC.
    One problem though ...
Running a Windows EXE file from a shared CD/DVD disc on a Windows XP machine. Even the most basic Windows EXE file gives me an permission error:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
Now in case you all are wondering why I'm doing this.. We use a lot of DVD+Rs at work to transfer files and my PC DVD drive does not read DVD+Rs. So I'm using the Mac's DVD drive to read them and share the drive's contents to the PC. Only I need to copy and the entire contents of DVD to the PC's hardrive in order to run an EXE. It starts to get tedious and unnecessary.
Permissions for the EXE from within Mac OS X:
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 cougar cougar 646840 Sep 23 2005 setup.exe
    Permissions from within Windows XP:
User 'cougar' and 'everyone' have at least Read and Execute permissions.
So that's my problem. I'm looking for a way to solve this dilemma.
Thanks for any suggestions or input in advance,

Giving up on this poor Question. Guess running Windows binaries from the Mac's DVD drive is out of the question.

  • Sharing DVD drive

I have a Macbook Pro about 4-5 years old (10.5.8), and a Macbook, about 1 year old (10.6.?) and I have both selected "share DVD drive" in the preferences, sharing tab.
But, when you go to finder to see Remote disc in the "devices" panel, it doesn't appear. Can anyone explain why?
I did read somewhere about needing to type something specific in Terminal and rebooting the macbook, but that didn't seem to work either.
    Any help appreciated.
I am seeing if I can share the DVD drive from the newer macbook onto my Macbook Pro because I have the lead to the TV only for the Macbook Pro.
    Thanks,

  • Sharing external DVD drive

I have an ext. USB DVD drive (set to Region 1) connected to
one of my iMacs (all their int. DVD drives are set to Region 2).
What do I have to do to be able to watch DVDs
from the ext. drive on the other iMacs?
I've already turned "DVD or CD sharing" on, but it seems to be not enough.
    Thanks for your help!

    Thanks for your answer!
Does Remote Disc appear in the Finder window's Sidebar?
Yes, if you mean the external USB-Drive and the sidebar of the Mac to which it is connected to.
Have you configured CDs, DVDs and iPods to appear in the Sidebar in the Finder Preferences?
    Yes of course.
If Remote Disc appears in the Finder window's Sidebar then highlighting it should give you a list of any Macs on your network that have disc drives and on which you have enabled CD, DVD sharing.
Where should this list appear? It only show the contents of the Disc when I click on it..
I only see the other Macs under "SHARED" in the sidebar. Clicking on them brings their Public Folders.
If you have inserted a disc to share in the drive, the disc should appear if you highlight that computer in the list. If the disc appears, then you should be able to play it as if it was on your computer.
I assume you mean the other Macs now. Here again I just see the other Mac's Public Folders.
Normally copy protected games and videos are not sharable through Remote Disc sharing.
I tried a self made CD and I also tried connecting a USB-RAM-card. It didn't work.
    What am I doing wrong...?

  • Install Aperture by sharing DVD Drive

I just got an iMac and I want to install Aperture 3 from the DVD that I have.  I also have a MacBook Pro with Mavericks on it.  I want to put my DVD in my MacBook and share it with the iMac so I can install Aperture on the iMac.  On the MacBook I selected the sharing option for the DVD drive and selected not to ask me.  In the iMac I can see my MacBook, but I can't see the Aperture DVD.

Have you opened sharing on BOTH machines?

  • Using a Shared DVD drive from a Windows PC

    Hey,
I want to pick up a Mac mini but I just want to spend about 600 on the regular one without the DVD burner. I will be using this mostly to learn Mac for my certifications.
Anyways, can the Mac find my shared DVD drive located on my Windows Vista Desktop machine and burn to it from iDVD and other programs? Or is that a Macbook Air only feature? Am I stuck with the regular drive or has the almighty Apple blessed their holier than thou of an OS with a basic feature as drive sharing?

i believe its only a feature on the air...... unless u can download somewhere that remote disc sharing ****

  • Trying to see DVD drive through DVD sharing. iMac does not see MacBook. DVD sharing is ON.

I have an iMac with a non-working DVD drive and I'm trying to install Snow Leopard from my MacBook's DVD drive. I have turned DVD Sharing ON but the iMac does not see the DVD drive in Finder's Shared Devices. I have tried FireWire, LAN through TimeCapsule and WiFi. Am I missing a step?
The iMac and MacBook are both late 2007 purchases and have 10.5.8.
    Thanks for any help.

Two commands you need to type in terminal on the computer that has the dead drive.
Disk sharing like the macbook air does is one of those things that's included in all OS X's on all computers, but that is not enabled.  (I think it's cause apple doesn't want to have to support it on more devices that they absolutely have to)
So here's how you enable it.
In your Utilities Folder, open Terminal
    copy and paste each line:
    sudo -s
    *type your password*
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser EnableODiskBrowsing -bool true defaults write
    com.apple.NetworkBrowser ODSSupported -bool true
    shutdown -r now
Okee dokee... That last command will restart your computer, then you're off to the races!

  • Sharing a DVD drive on a PC

I have a new imac and so need to share a DVD drive on my PC for installing software, and burning DVDs from TOAST of our home movies. I can see the drive on the iMac, and watch DVDs from it, but don't seem to be able to record any file types to it. Is this expected, I know there are certain restrictions imposed to stop pirating but I'm trying to copy my own files, without succes!

You want to copy files from your iMac to the PC's DVD drive? If so I don't think that woudl work. The purpose of Remote Disc in OS X is to provide a method for Macs without DVD drives to install software that is only available on CD or DVD from a machine with a DVD drive. If you want to write files from your iMac to DVD then you will need to purchase a USB DVD drive and connect it to your iMac.
