DVD drive stops in middle of movies at small scratches

I watch a lot of movies on my computer. Lately (and often), the movie will randomly stop and break up, the cd will start whirring, stopping, and re-whirring, and then the program will insist on quitting. then i'll have to start it up again and skip to after the trouble spot. It says that the cd must be scratched or corrupted, but I put the cds into other DVD players who can read straight through the trouble spot no problem.
This is INCREDIBLY frustrating, and I already had to replace the disc drive before once already for cd-burning problems. Any recommendations?

Quick question that I hope someone knows the answer to. My DVD drive stopped writting DVD's a while ago (several system reinstalls have proved that it is the drive and not a driver error/conflict) So I got hold of another drive. Fitting was easy however it appears that there is something funny with the ide chain configuration in this laptop. The old drive was set on cable select, however the new drive is set as slave. because of this neither the HD or the DVD drive are accessable.
Does anyone know how to switch dvd drives to cable select to make them work (I tried putting jumpers on the HD to change it between a master and slave but with no joy.)

Hi John,
Normally, slim design CD/DVD drives are preset by the manufacturer but it is apparently possible to change the setting if you really want to. Please check out the following post :-

DVD Drive will not recognize any movie DVD disk in the drive - thus will not play any dvd movies.

HP G71 449WV dvd drive will not recognize any dvd disc that has a movie on it. Will not play movies, keeps saying to insert disc when there is a disc in there. It will recognize a dvd data disc or a blank dvd, it just will not recognize any dvd movies. I've tried the microsoft fix it, downloaded new codecs, using different dvd playback software but none of that works since the drive will not recognize there is even a dvd movie in the drive. Computer is out of warranty.

It appears that you're not able to play movie DVD's in the DVD player in your notebook. I will try to assist you with this.

Also, are these purchased DVD's or burnt DVD's?
Do the movies play in other sources? (DVD player, other PC)

DVD drive stopped working after Mavericks install

I have a Macbook Pro (late 08 model) that was running Snow Leopard. I recently did a clean install of Mavericks and since then the DVD drive just spins and ejects discs without being able to read them (doesn't seem to matter what I use. Software, games, audio cds, etc..). It was working fine before installing Mavericks and I can still boot from the DVD drive (old snow leopard boot disc) but it won't read any discs once booted into the OS even though the OS is detecting the drive just not the disc when inserted.
I've tried resetting the NVRAM/PRAM and resetting the SMC as suggested on other forums but like many others with the same issue it didn't help. I also cycled through several drutil commands as suggested to "wake up" the drive but that didn't help any either.
I'm kind of stumped here guys. I could roll back to Snow Leopard but I've got some software thats dropping support so I'd rather be running Mavericks if I can sort out this DVD drive issue. Clearly its not the drive itself since it worked fine before and I can boot from it. Any ideas?

Hrm looks like I might of fixed it. I went back after seeing another post about spamming drutil commands to "wake up" the drive and just spammed them about 20 or so times and the drive started working again.
I'm still very confused as to why it just stopped working within the OS after installing Mavericks (yet I was still able to boot from the DVD just fine). Clearly something is bugged in mavericks. I even came across a post on the apple forums from someone with this issue and it was effecting both his late 08 and early 2013 Macbook Pros.
I'll keep an eye on my own machine to see if it stops working again but for now it seems my drive is "fixed" go figure.

T400 DVD drive stops spinning

I just had to install my third hard drive in this lemon of a computer. I'm running XP SP3 with all current updates. The bios and dvd drivers that were installed by Thinkvantage Productivity Center are newer than what are listed on the Lenovo updates page. I had no problem with the DVD drive with the old hard drive and its drivers.
Now I try to reinstall my software from the original CDs and the drive stops spinning within a minute of starting the install. Setup.exe process hangs and System log gets a message from Service Control Manager that reads "The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service entered the stopped state." I can start the service manually but it reenters the stopped state every time I try the install from CD again.
Current bios 7UET89WW (3.19) date
Model HL-DT-ST RW/DVD MU10N combo CD/DVD driver seen in Device Manager is 5.1.2535.0 date 7/1/2001. No newer driver is found when I choose update from Device Manager or when I use ThinkPad SATA Optical Disc Drive Firmware Update Utility. I have uninstalled the device and let it reinstall on its own and get the same driver.
However, when I launch Thinkvantage Productivity Center and go to Advanced System Info, under Components/CD-ROM the driver is version 5.1.2600.5512 date 4/13/2008. The drive does not show up under Problem Devices and tests fine.
Any suggestions how to get my optical drive back to functioning? I've lost 3 days of work from this whole episode.

Do you mean test it to see if it will burn data or boot from a Linux distro to look more closely at the drive? I have knoppix on DVD but I could use another computer to burn linux live if that has some particularly good tools.
I haven't tried to burn anything to a DVD using the drive. I was able to get a few photos copied off a CDROM onto the hard drive before it spun down and imapi stopped itself.

Equium A210 - After BIOS update the DVD drive stopped working

hi, since I have updated my BIOS recently, my DVD drive has stopped working on my Equium A210-1AS with Vista 32bit.
I have tried Microsoft fixme program that does not work, upper and lower registry is not there ether in regedit.
Has anyone got any solutions to get DVD drive working again?

The CD/DVD was working fine before I was prompted by Toshiba tempro to update my BIOS, since then my CD/DVD drive doesnt work.
Have tried fixme from Microsoft that doesnt work, have tried to delete upper/lower filters they are not there, have unistalled CD drive and restarted the drive re-installs and still does not reconise any CD/DVD to boot up and DVD drive disapears some times
Any suggestions?

DVD Drive will not play ANY movies

I seem to have the standard drive for the 15 inch MacBook Pro (bought less than one year ago), but it simply will not play ANY movie DVD I've tried. It whirrs and whirrs but nothing happens. I've tried multiple movies and none have worked. Yet it works fine with software cd's and loading on of new programs, and burned CDs with pictures display just fine. I checked the System info on the drive and notice that the last line - which is media - had a 'no' next to it. Is it not turned on or programmed to play movies??? If so, how do I activate it? Thanks for any help.

My MBP plays DVD and says no also, so that is not it. Sounds broken to me. Call Applecare and I do hope you paid for the 3 year Applecare. Did it EVER play DVDs?

IMovie DVD audio stops in middle?

Imported a one hour video into iMovie 11 from our new JVC video camera then exported it to iDVD.
It made the chapters into menu scenes as expected.
However, in the last scene, the audio stops in the middle?
I don't think there is a secret make the audio stop in the middle of a clip setting I could have accidently clicked on?
I've used the advanced menu to delete and recreate the encoding with no luck.
I've exported an image file and used Disk Utility to burn it with no success.
I've gone back to iMovie and shared it to iDVD again with no luck.
The sound is there in iMovie and iDVD but not on the disc using DVD Player?
On top of my frustration, everything I try takes an hour or more of waiting...
Who removed export selected clip from iMovie?
Please don't make me have to go use a PC. I thought my new laptop was an upgrade?
I understand that DVDs are a thing of the past now--just fix the bugs, "one more build!"
iDVD used to be fun like HyperCard back in the day and now it is embarassing to see the apple logo on the menu screen as the audio stops and everyone grabs the remote to check the volume and blame the sound system. It has now become a disappointing waste of time--I should just go watch YouTube videos of laughing babies and cats...

I have again created a disk image and the audio does not play half way through. I have since reloaded the audio on the corrupted half and am now creating another disk image and am burning at 4x as you suggested. If this does not work, do you think I should try reloading iMovie and iDVD again? I am using a Panasonic DVD player to play back the DVD, which I must admit does give me problems every now and then but I also have a cheapie Conia which believe me, plays everything and I have also tried play back on this, but still no go. Will keep you all posted, hopefully in a few hours. Thanks for your feedback.

have been having an problem with burning cd's and dvd for a while but now it cant even find them to play or rip to my media player ( or add to my phone etc) is there a driver for the dvd rw in this model that i can reload?running windows 8.1 and windows media player (iplayer cant find it either) its like the drive isnt even there. help!thanks in advance.

I did what you said Vidya. the drive is listed and i could move it in the boot order. I could not however, verify anything beyond that. screenshots below. What's the prognosis? is the drive truly good and dead? Thank you again for your help.

While burning home movies my drive just stopped working. I got my laptop for christmas. Is it still covered under warrenty? If not is it better to try to replace the drive or just by an external writer?

DVD drive VERY LOUD while watching movies

Maybe it's because I'm used to laptop parts (my other two macs are a MBP and a mini), but it seems to me the Mac Pro I just bought is extremely loud when watching DVDs. I realise the fans have to spin up to make the disc spin, but I don't ever recall hearing that much noise from them. It's certainly louder than the whole computer is running 4 SETI units at once...

The loud noise you are experiencing is because of the reason that the "stock" Sony DW-D150A has a extremely slow read time- as compared to the Poineer DVR111D. The Sony's read time is almost 2 1/2 times slower that the Pioneers.
This noise problem can be solved 3 ways.
1-There is a Firmware flash available that converts the Sony drive to an NEC drive- since they are essencially the same stock drive- just with different firmware. This article explains how to do this:

2-Replace the "stock" Sony Drive with a Pioneer DVR-111D. They cost around $35-50 @ most places.
3- This is the option that I have done...Install a Pioneer DVR-111D in the second optical drive bay ( making sure that you properly set the Slave/Master jumper cables on each drive-Pioneer DVR-111D Master..Sony DW-D150A to slave). Use the Sony as a second drive to write to only, and then use the Pioneer as the primary drive to read and write to.
This did solve my noisr problems...Hope it helps you..

My Equium A300D-16C has stopped recognizing any type of disc, Ive tried double clicking on the drive but they gey kicked out and the message "please insert a disc into the drive" appears.
Having read back previous posts in a bit not to look too much like a dumb blonde and have so far checked the registry values - which are not set, uninstalled the drive via the system device - to no avail. Only had it about 2 months and really cannot be without it.
Any help would be very much appreciated

I tried to install a bluetooth dongle on vista , the bluetooth device was an old one and i dont think it was compatible with vista as it didnt work and it knocked off my webcam,i uninstalled the bluetooth and re-installed the webcam driver from toshiba support, and it worked again.
