DVD Drive takes Ages to Recognise BBC DVDs

This ONLY happens with BBC made DVDs. I don't know why, but they won't mount on my desktop. I hear this Kouu-Kii! noise and the DVD is then stuck in my Combo PIONEER DVD/CDRW DCR-111 Drive. After a long wait (half an hour or more) the DVD suddenly appears on the desktop and starts playing itself.
As i said earlier, only with BBC branded DVDs.
Any Ideas, Anyone? I think it is a fairly common thing. Maybe it is that I need a new Combo Drive. I Hope Not.

I have a Satellite A100-01G but the CD/DVD drive has stopped being recognised by the machine.
I have Vista ultimate as the O/S.
    Please help
    Thank you

    Hi
Did you check in the device manager if the CD/DVD drive appears correctly?
    Please check this!!!
As further action I would recommend removing the CD/DVD drive from the device manger a reboot the notebook.
The Windows OS should recognize the new device (ODD) and should load the drivers again.
Then access the registry and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    and reboot.
    Good luck

  • CD/DVD drive is not being recognised in Satellite L755-15R

Hi, Our L750 - 15R CD/DVD drive is not being recognised in my computer, we have updated drivers and used Microsoft fix to no avail, we aren't getting any error messages.
Any help .would be most appreciated.

Delete the ODD in the device manager.
Then remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Then restart the notebook and check if the CD/DVD drive would appear there.

  • JPEG pictures take ages to load

Can someone help me getting my web pages to load faster. I
use pictures straight from my Nikon Camera and put them on my
Dreamweaver web pages. When I open my pages on the web it takes
ages for the pictures to load. How can I speed this up. Do I have
to convert the pictures into another format? How do I do this,
    Thanks,
    Graeme.

Don't use jpgs straight from your Nikon. Those are your
    source files and are
designed to be printed. What you want on the web is a version
    slimmed down
for the internet. Before you begin archive a copy direct from
    your camera to
CD/DVD, back-up hard drive, someplace safe.
Edit, crop or whatever you want to do to make your pictures
    better in your
graphics editor of choice. If you have one of the Creative
    Suites use
PhotoShop or Fireworks to do that. If not, your Nikon should
    have come with
    some basic photo editing software.
When you are happy with what you have done to crop your
    images resize them
to 72dpi and the dimensions you want the images to appear.
    Play with the
compression settings to get the best balance between file
    size and image
quality. Remember that on the web you want fast loading so
    sacrifice some
image quality. Once you have achieved that balance then
    replace your
bloated, ready for print images on your web pages and upload
    them all.
Unless you are making the originals available for others to
    print remove
them from your website to save you hosting space. If you are
    making them
available to print link the larger print ready photo from
    your camera (or
the cropped version that is not optimized if appropriate) to
    the image you
display on your site. It may be helpful to visitors to know
    how large those
linked files are if you make them available for print just to
    avoid
surprises for those on slow connections.

  • My imac G5 isight September 2006 hard drive takes several attempts to mount. When it does it works fine. Is there anything I can do to repair or do I just abandon it and sell it for parts?

My imac G5 isight September 2006 hard drive takes several attempts to mount. When it does it works fine. Is there anything I can do to repair or do I just abandon it and sell it for parts?

It's an Intel iMac the last G5s were built in 2005.
    How to identify iMac models
    1. Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Startup Disk and check to besure the that OS X 10.6 on the Macintosh HD is set as the Startup Disk.
    2. Start up from you Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD, navagate to Utilities > Disk Utility and Repair the Macintosh HD.
About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature

  • Repairing permissions on OS X 10.5.2 takes ages

When trying to repair permissions with Disk Utility from the installer DVD on my iMac, it takes ages until the actual repairing starts (about 4-6 minutes - blue/white ongoing colour flow). After it has started, permissions on the 320GB HD, whereof 65GB are used, are being repaired and it takes another 1-2 minutes. Why does it take so long until the actual repairing starts?

My computer has about the same size disk and space used as your computer and it takes about 20-25 minutes to repair permissions. Tiger was much faster at repairing permissions but didn’t do as much checking.
Long permissions repair times have been reported on this forum numerous times. The times I’ve seen range from a few minutes to over 30 minutes. Your iMac is faster than my G5.
Also, at first it will hang at a point very early, reporting “about 1 minute remaining” - usually for several minutes - and then it will give a more realistic amount of time remaining. This has also been reported by other users.
Go get some coffee or go for a walk while it does a thorough repair. The specific results will be there when you get back.

  • Why does it take ages for my video files to be listed in the menu?

I have my apple tv 2nd generation connected to my airport extreme first generation via ethernet. I have my mac mini connected to the same network (though not connected to the airport extreme) with video files and tv shows in itunes. My itunes media is stored on a hard drive connected to my mac mini and home sharing is on.
It takes ages for my apple tv 2 to list the videos/tv shows in its menu. For example I have my films listed by genre. If I select a genre, it takes sometimes as long as 5+ minutes to list the videos within that genre.
Can anybody help with this frustration?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You probably have a problem with your LAN. If you are using wifi:
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

  • Time Machine back up takes ages.

Hi. I still got the problem that my time machine backup take ages to complete.
I installed a widged called time machine buddy, someone told me to do and now that's what it shows me.
Any idea why it looks like it does the backup twice in a row and for what reason it takes about half an hour to copy less then 1GB.
I allready deleted the HD I use for the backup and got it all new but it did not solve the problem.
    Cheers.

Very good question, as I've had the same issue for over 2 months since installing a new hard drive. Pondini very kindly, patiently and astutely helped me get a hanging 2 hour back up down to a respectable 15 minutes, but that is still too long (when nothing has changed between back ups, in particular). You articulate the question and pose the dilemma far better than I ever expressed. The seeming "dual backup" seems to be the culprit. Maybe Pondidni can give us some guidance based on your post.

  • BC4J, compiling: takes ages to compile when connected to network

    Hi,
    We have a BC4J project that's almost
    100% wizard-generated from an Oracle 8.1.5
database and we have been experiencing a very strange behaviour in JDev. What happens is that it takes ages to load and compile the project when the computer is connected to the network. Just unplugging the network cable more than doubles the speed. The database and JDev are on the same machine: a Pentium III 550, 512MB using JDK1.2.2.
We would appreciate any comments on this behaviour.

athelas wrote:No, I removed it since and I removed eth0="dhcp" and wlan0="dhcp", because that is in the profiles. Yes I am still experimenting with all that stuff but I didn't know which deamons can be backgrounded and which not.
This is off the actual thread topic, but I background everything except syslog-ng because I do want to see logs in case something goes wrong during boot. Also you have hal in your daemons which is deprecated. If you still  use apps that require hal, then by all means keep it in the array, but if you don't then that's something you can get rid off.
fam is another that can be replaced with gamin. gamin does not require to be run as a daemon. if you don't use printers then you can get rid of cups. if you don't have network storage or any reason to access drives across the network then you can remove netfs as well.
Just some things you can look into.

  • Optimizing video in imovie takes ages

Had to convert my sony video files ( using iV1 ) to M4V and when I import them to imovie the process takes ages. Please is there a way to make this quicker or to skip the optimizing stage? I am a bit of a beginner here !!!!  Thanks for any help.

    Hi Mowser,
I have not tried SD card yet (my camera has HDD and I have no SD card. I have the latest version of iMovie 08. I seem to remember that when I selected "import from camera" the "mts" files (or any file of AVCHD) remain grayed out.
Maybe since the system came all preinstalled, it has its glitches. MacOSX itself shows me the drive of the HDD immediately (or a dmg I created from it). Just all Apple editing programs wait a good 5-9 minutes before they take any action in showing the drive/importing. Once they do, all goes fine.
    thank you for your input!

  • Synchronizing previews takes ages

Since I use Lightroom on two computers, at home and at work, I synchronize my catalogue via a portable harddisk. That only takes a minute, but synchronizing the previews takes ages.
Why? Because the previews (around 8000 in my case) are stored in over 10.000 folders. So more folders than files!! It takes my synchro-program (FileBack) ages to compare files in so many folders. And that is even when no file has been changed - just to see if there is a difference between source and destination.
My question to the LR staff would be: why in so many folders?
My question to the readers of this forum: can I store the previews in a different location than the catalogue? So I can synchronize the catalogue and not the previews (as they are not so very essential).
    Thanks.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

    Bob,
    Try it over wireless.  .
No thanks!!  Even the slow usb2 is about 10 times faster, and if I was bothered about the time to sync, I could use my usb3 or esata ports. But I like the little 1TB WD Passport Essential 2.5" portable drives that are only usb2 at the moment. Wireless is just for hotels that can't afford wires.
But I take your point about the number of preview folders; I've often wondered why they need so many. Most have just one preview in them; some have two or three, and some have none!

  • FAST enabled MView takes ages to refresh

    Hi All,
I have a materlialized view which is based on a single fact table ( OAS_BALANCE_UNIONED 11,445,156 rows) and a bunch of dimension tables each containing limited number of rows (a typical start schema).
The conditioins to make the mview fast refreshable have been met so the mview created successfully with the FAST option.
The mview then worked just fine after than and had been refreshing FAST (6 minutes) for the whole day till other mviews started to refresh in the same time. Some of those mviews read from some of the base tables of the mview in question. Since then, the mivew has started to take ages (3 hours) to refresh. There is surely something wrong because the COMPLETE refresh was faster than that.
Later, I stopped all the refresh jobs of the other mviews. Yet, the FAST mview still has the same problem of taking ages to refresh.
When I monitored the session that refreshes the mview, I noticed in the "Long Ops" that
most of the time is spent on a step named as "Hash Join" (it appears in the Message column). Hash join occurrs because of the outer join.
Why my FAST mview suddenly started to take so long time to refresh?
How can I make my FAST mivew really refresh fast?

Hard to say why the refresh is now slow. Possibilties include
    * system resources implemented by the fast refresh
    * something changed on the query making the background query run slowly
Look at the query first. 18 tables, with almost every join an outer join. Some of the tables appear more than once in the query.

I just purchased this movie on Thursday, May 15, so just a few days ago.  I have never had any trouble whatsoever since I have been in Vietnam.  I have downloaded several movies and even music and they have all synced to my respected Apple products except for this purchase.
Sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean by studios and different versions.  Could you please explain?
I checked my purchased list in my purchase history under my account and there are no hidden items.

I downloaded the trial of Adobe Audition 3.0 (I've been using 1.5 on WinXP for a few years now and it's always been fine to use!)
I am trying to set up my Line6 POD Studio UX1 with Audtion 3.0 on Windows 7 Pro (64 Bit - 32GB RAM Quad Core Intel i7 3770 Processor)
I am noticing that the Settings dialog takes ages to respond and update with the changes I make - when I eventually managed to get playback - the playback only came out on the left monitor.
I should mention that I am doing this on a previous Audition 1.5 session - Audition 3.0 saved the session as a new session so I think that should be fine.
What I'm looking for here is the correct settings I need to use in Audition 3.0 to use my UX1.
I don't want to pay for Audition 3.0 if it's not going to work for me!

You won't be able to pay for Audition 3 since it was discontinued several years ago. However you may be able to upgrade to AA3 for free as a previous Audition user.
