DVD drive will not recognize blank DVDs after upgrade to Lion.

It finds burned DVD/CDs but not blank ones. Disk utility partially sees blank dvd, gives option to eject it, but will not allow eject it. Finder does not see it at all. have to restart to have it eject. Tried different DVD's (Manufactures and -R / +R, etc). Have followed recommendations on resets and have even reloaded the OS.  This problem started immediately after upgrade from snow lepoard to lion.

Repairing permissions yes. But in my head, if everything is working fine for it, just won't read Blank media, could it be a software thing?
I'll give it a shot in a few hours

  • Help :( DVD Drive will not read Blank DVDs but movie and data DVDs ok.

I am at loss what to do. Whenever I put in DVD with media in it (including +R), it plays and reads it all just fine. CD data reads no problem too. However, when I put in a Blank DVD, it chugs and ejects it out completely.
Preferences are fine. It says 'Ask What to Do' is set when 'You insert a Blank DVD'
Here was how it started. Previously, I could put in a blank DVD and it would be just fine but I'm having problems burning after the 10.5.6 update. Read in a post somewhere to try resetting your PRAM which I did and now it won't accept the blank DVDs. Everything else is fine.
I know a lot may say it's a bad batch, but I bought a new batch, Memorex vs. Verbatim and nothing.
Would really appreciate ANY help I can get!

  • DVD Movies will not play in SuperDrive after upgrading to Lion?

I just discovered that I cannot play any DVD movies using the Super Drive.  It spins up and down a couple of time and then ejects the DVD.  I tried several DVD's I have.

Well, that about does it. I inserted a music CD into my MBP, finished listening to it and now the CD is stuck in my machine. I can hear and feel it try to eject but something is stopping it so it ***** it back in. I cant figure out how to get it out. I have had nothing but trouble wit this machine. I am beginning to think I made a very expensive mistake buying this thing. I'm from Louisiana, perhaps this Mac has a better capacity to soak up oil in the Gulf than to actually WORK as a computer.
All this has happened in about 6 hours. Buyers remorse has fully set in.

  • DVD Drive will not recognize any movie DVD disk in the drive - thus will not play any dvd movies.

HP G71 449WV dvd drive will not recognize any dvd disc that has a movie on it. Will not play movies, keeps saying to insert disc when there is a disc in there.  It will recognize a dvd data disc or a blank dvd, it just will not recognize any dvd movies.  I've tried the microsoft fix it, downloaded new codecs, using different dvd playback software but none of that works since the drive will not recognize there is even a dvd movie in the drive.  Computer is out of warranty.

Hello crollinsphoto1, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that you're not able to play movie DVD's in the DVD player in your notebook. I will try to assist you with this.
I'd recommend starting with this document:
Resolving DVD and Blu-ray Movie Problems (Windows 7).
Also, are these purchased DVD's or burnt DVD's?
Do the movies play in other sources? (DVD player, other PC)
Let me know how this goes.
    Thanks.

  • DVD drive does not recognize blank media

I have a Matshia DVD-RAM UJ-841S DVD drive, that will not recognize blank DVD media. This has been going on for a while now, so I don't know 'what has changed'. It will recognize/burn CD's, will play DVD's, but will not recognize blank DVD media. I have tried reinstalling the driver, tried different types of high quality media (Verbatim, Memorex etc). I have burned many DVD's in the past, this drive is (was) capable of doing it (despite what Microsofts FixIt programs says). I'm not terribly techy, so if it is a registry problem you'll have to explain it very carefully.
    Thanks,

I HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM.  I CAN BURN TO MY COMPUTER - COPY A DVD - BUT CAN'T COPY TO A BLANK DISC AND HAVE TRIED ALL KINDS OF MUSIC DISC???

  • CD/DVD Drive will Not read CD/DVDs

This desktop is only about 3 months old and so far has worked great!! But since last week for some reason the CD/DVD Drive will not read any disc. The tray will open but then nothing happens at all once a CD/DVD is in. Doesn't even sound like it is spinning. Any ideas?? Please help!! Thanks!!

Also it is running Windows 8 and is a Ideacentre K410. And the CD/DVD Drive it is showing I have installed is TSSTCorpDVD-RW SH-216BB Not sure if that has always been the drive or not.

Hi there. count me in on the Sony DVD problems. My Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 will not recognize the Adobe Creative Suite 3 DVD for installation. The DVD works fine in other G4 systems.
The DVD drive will recognize data CD's but this Adobe DVD just churns and hums for 30 seconds and then the drive ejects the disk.

After reading the boards, it sounds like the Pioneer DVR-112D 18X DVD Burner (Drive only) is the unit to buy and replace this Sony one.
There appears to be a spacer issue related to the door on the G5 Tower case. Will the spacers from the Sony unit work on the Pioneer unit, or can the Pioneer unit just be installed as is using the existing ribbon cable. I've read the PMG5OpticalDriveDIY.pdf replacement manual, but am confused about SuperDrives vs. the Pioneer DVR-112D.
Can anyone clarify the details of replacement?
Also, will I need new software (Roxio, Toast) to burn CD's and DVD's after replacing the drive?
    thanks, and best regards,
    Eric

    what can i do?

Yeah, that's not good. You could try resetting the SMC, sometimes it helps. Other than that you have two choices replace the drive, either yourself or by someone, or just buy an external drive. Considering that your Mac is 5 years old I'd go the external route. To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • ITunes devices will not detect digital copy after upgrading to Lion

Hi, I recently bought a Blu-Ray that came with a digital copy.  I know there are two types, as I get a lot of them.  This is one of the ones where the file is copied from the disc itself.  (Not one where you just enter a code and download the file.)
I put the disc in the computer and iTunes will not recognize it.  I have done many of these before and never had this issue.  It cannot be the disc funtionality as the DVD player will play it and the Finder recognizes it.  (It is the right disc too!  I didn't accidentally insert the wrong one.)  I am wondering if it has anything to do with upgrading to Lion and iTunes 10.5.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem, or does anyone know how I can fix this?

    Dsimagry,
Thanks for your reply. I did check the software updates for the system and iPhoto, which told me I was up-todate.
I do not see the camera come up as a drive on the desktop or in finder. In fact I don't believe that I ever did. I always used to open iPhoto and turn the camera on. Then iPhoto would ask me if I wanted to import the photos. This seems to have stopped since I installed the upgrade for Lion. I know the camera works, as I took it to my wife's Mac Mini that has Tiger and it connected and imported the photos fine. I have tried what another person stated in a post where someone else had a problem with an Olympus camera and that was to redo the disk permissions. It helped that person, but did not help me. They also stated looking for the device in Image Capture and iMovie, but my camera is not showing up there. I am suspecting that there is some going on with the OS Lion that is preventing my camera and Compact Flash memory card from being recognized. If I cannot get this fixed I may have to revert back to Snow Leopard.

  • Used Bootcamp to install Windows 7. Now, my macbook pro 13 mid 2009 will not boot back into OSX, there is no Bootcamp utilities like there should be anywhere to be found, and the DVD drive will not recognize the OSX install disk that came with my laptop.

Basically all in the title. Also, some additional info: partition was 115 GBs for Windows, 385 or whatever for OSX (I have a 500 GB Harddrive), I have tried restarting multiple times, and the drive will recognize the DVD, but almost as if the DVD is blank, as it asks me to format it or drag files to it, etc.

Hold your "Option" key down while starting your machine.  Continue to hold it down until you are presented with the boot menu which should allow you to select either OS X or Windows (provided you didn't somehow wipe your OS X partition).  When you get into OS X, you can go to System Preferences / Startup Disk.  Here you can select the default startup partition (OS X or Windows)... when you're installing Windows via BootCamp, it gets changed to Windows so when you finish setting up BootCamp, it automatically reboots and launches the Windows installer.  Installing all of the Windows drivers from the OS X DVD should provide you with a Startup Disk option under Windows as well.

  • Satellite A660 - DVD drive will not recognise some DVDs

    I have a new Satellite A660-17E with a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N drive, running Windows 7 64 bit.
The drive will read most DVDs. Commercial DVDs (region 2) are fine. However, there are problems with DVDs recorded using DVD recorders. DVD+R recordings using a Philips machine work fine. DVD+R and DVD-R using a Sony HDX RDR 1095 machine do not work.
I'm hoping that the drive is ok and that this issue can be resolved by adjusting some setting or other?
    Any ideas?

It is most likely the issue is with the brand of dvd's you record with. as stated in the manual not all brands of recordable media are guaranteed to work with the dvd drive.
Also the sony recorder, i had a similar problem when playing the recorded dvd on another dvd machine, i found by adding a little more recorded info from the other machine onto the dvd it played fine after that. If you use DVD+R on the sony , record something on the laptop to the same dvd and then see if the dvd will play on the laptop.

  • DVD drive doesn't recognize blank DVDs or allow burns

I got a 20", 2.4 Ghz Intel Imac not too long ago, with Leopard already installed. I'd been using Parallels or Boot Camp to do all by DVD burning in Windows until recently. The first time I tried to do it in OSX 10.5.1, it didn't work right. The DVD icon does not show up on the desktop, though it's acknowledged when it's inserted, and a box pops up asking for me to perform an action. But I can't get it to burn a simple data DVD through disk utility, or even in DVD Studio Pro. I saw other threads about this, wondering if anyone has a solution. A file ending in .plist was mentioned, that you should move from its folder if you find it. I didn't find it. What else can I do? Works fine in Windows through Boot Camp or Parallels, and once a disc has something on it, it'll show up when put in the DVD drive. It's only blanks that are "invisible".

You issue sounds similiar to all of us in the other chat thread. Go to "MATSHITA superdrive has died" and post your comments there, perhaps more people post, it might get Apple's attention.

  • GX660 DVD drive will not play video DVDs

For some reason the DVD drive in my GX660 refuses to recognise video DVD discs.
DVDs with binary data and audio CDs will be read fine, but inserting a video DVD --any video DVD-- just results in an enormous amount of seeking sounds from the drive before Windows 7 finally gives up on it a reports the drive as empty.
I've had the GX660 for just under a year, during which time the DVD drive has been used very sparingly -- maybe for the installation of no more than a dozen programs.  Never been used for burning DVDs or CDs. Never been used for reading video DVDs which is why I discover it at this late date.
Any ideas concerning this issue, before I turn in the laptop for service?  I'd rather not have to.

In your shoes I'd contact MSI and see if there's a firmware update for the drive to correct the issue. >>How to contact MSI.<<

  • DVD burner will not recognize my DVD disc DVD-R or +R on IQ500 model. Suggestions?

I've tried two different brands and two types of DVD.  I have tried to burn to disc through Adobe Elements and Windows Media Player and another.  I've spent 4 days trying to figure this out.  Someone please help me!!!!
My DVD burner does say it is up to date and working properly.  I have burned music and videos before on it.  I'm stumped.

    Hi.
I wonder if we may have some details about your pc.  The operating system and product number should be enough. (P/N) Really would like to help you figure the issue out.  There may be updates available for your product that can help resolve the problem.
