DVD drive won't read disks at boot

I have a Paviliton DV6-2113sa running Win7 HP  64bit.
I removed Acronis True Image and when I rebooted I got a BSOD at the point when the coloured balls should merge into one.
I thought OK, put the system repair disk into the DVD drive and boot up, but the drive is failing to read any recovery dosks. I think the drive has packed up as I haven't used it for some time.
Can I use any replacement drive in this model or must I get the same one again?
The drive light flickers as though it is reading data but it doesn't 'spool up' to speed and I don't get the 'press any key to load from DVD'.
The BSODs are a seperate issue which I think running a system repair will fix but I can't as the drive won't read data.
Is it possible to put the repair disk files onto a 4gb USB stick and if so, how do I do it?
Thanks.

Hi Peeps
I had exactly the same problem with my Macbook, again from the UK. Really weird though as would intermittantly read DVD film's which worked fine previously.
Well.... Took it to my local Apple store and saw a genius and anyway they replaced the super drive and logic board (surprised about the logic board!).
But just got it back today and the DVD drive is completely fubard so is being returned tomorrow to get this sorted!
Moral of the story, sounds like a drive or board problem. Will keep you updated when I get mine back

do you have the win 7 cd handy, try to boot into the discs and see whether that works, this will tell you whether that is software or hardware problem. Such failures do occur, due to ageing of laser.

  • Imac dvd drive won't accept disks

My iMac's dvd drive won't let me insert any disks. It feels like there's something blocking the way in. The eject button on my keyboard doesn't seem to be working either – usually the dvd drive makes an 'ejecting sound' when the button is pushed, even when there's no disk. I've also tried some disk ejecting tricks found in this community. The dvd drive seems to be responding to nothing...

    Try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
No guarantee this will work but it's a start.

  • MacBook CD/DVD drive won't read disc

I have a Apple MacBook MC207LL. I have run into a major problem. My CD/DVD drive won't recogonize a disc when it's inserted (I have to force eject it). Disk utility shows that there is a disc present in the CD/DVD drive.
My major issue is that I erased my partition so I can have a clean install of my laptop. Now I can't reinstall the OS because it won't read the disc or a USB.
Is there a way to use Terminal to force it to read my data on the disc?
Otherwise I am stuck with an empty computer that I will never be able to use I have done research on this and nobody has run into this exact problem as me. If someone can take their time to help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem, but now mine wont even notice that the disc is there! I wouldsay take it to the genius bar.

  • G60t-200 CD/DVD drive won't read XP discs

I recently re-installed Windows 7 Home Premium after I had a blue screen crash forcing me to re-format the hard drive on a g-60t-200. I've installed all the recommended Windows updates as well as all the HP updates for the g60t-200 model that I have but now the CD/DVD drive will not read the files on older discs that I burned using Windows XP on another machine. It shows the disc in the drive and shows the folders on the disc but when you open the folders, the files are not visible. When I right click and open up the properties of the disc while it's in the drive it shows it as "UDF" format. The other machines in the house running Windows XP can read the disks just fine and show all the files. Is there an update or driver I'm missing that will allow the drives to read the files on discs burned using Windows XP?

Hi sherifawad, and welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that after restoring your computer, you can no longer read CD/DVD's that were burned on XP with the Windows 7 operating system. I will try my best to help you resolve this issue. I suggest that you make sure that you have the latest service pack for Windows 7. Here is the Service Pack and Update Center for Windows.
I am including this document for Using HP Support Tools to Update HP Software, Drivers, and BIOS with Windows 7.
I hope this helps, please let me know how it goes.

  • DVD Player Won't Read Disks

I'm using OS 10.4.3 and DVD Player 4.6. My dvd drive will not read pre-recorded disk or blamk disc.
    Could it be software related?
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi
It would be helpful if you included the optical drive model info (from Apple System Profiler), and complete your Mac profile; there are 6 different G4 models. Include what type of blank media, and whether the drive holds but does not mount the media, or if it ejects it.
applehistory.com can be helpful if you are unsure which flavour G4 you own.

  • My DVD Drive won't read Any DL Dvd

Hello, I have a problem. I am trying to burn a DVD+R DL from memorex and everytime I put it in my drive it always eject. But the drive works since I just re-installed my OS from the mac OS boot disc that came with the computer when I bought it. And I also installed programs from dvd before. Is this a driver not updated or my dvd drive is broken or what's wrong with my computer. Please help me. BTW, My computer is running on leopard, its a unibody 2,4ghz.

You can try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
If that doesn't help you can try a cleaning disc or a quick shot of canned air. It's likely though that your drive has failed, it' not all that uncommon. It that is the case you can either replace it or have it replaced but it's far cheaper just to buy a usb external drive....just not Apples because it won't work with macs with a built in drive working or not. .

  • DVD Drive Won't Read "Homemade" Data Discs

Hello! I just purchased a T500 with a regular old DVD burner (Optiarc DVD RW AD-7910S) and am having an issue with it. The problem is that it will read certain DVDs just fine (a Visual Studio DVD, for instance, worked just fine. As did a Vista Ultimate DVD). Unfortunately, other discs are not so fortunate. Anything that contains just plain old data files (such as a disc of log files, a disc with video files, etc) won't load at all. The drive will spin up, spin down, make a floppy disk reading clunking sound, and repeat the procedure.
So it seems that anything that comes from an ISO or an "official" source (Microsoft) works fine, but any time a disc was burned with Nero or the Windows burning thing(tm) it won't read at all. This doesn't apply to CDs, however, which seem to be working just fine.
Is this an easily fixable problem? Could it be a problem with the hardware? It doesn't seem like that would only stop it from reading data discs, but I'm no expert. I updated the firmware to the latest version available on the download site (actually I did that before trying any data discs, so I don't know if it was an issue with the old firmware). Is it possible that it didn't update properly or something? Would it be worth trying (or possible) to redo the firmware update or to revert to the old version to test? Forgive me if I'm sounding ignorant here.
    Thanks for any insights!
P.S. I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, if that makes any difference to anything.

  • Equium L300 CD/DVD Drive no longer reads disks

There is already a thread with a similar problem to this with a different model, but it seems to have died.
The CD/DVD drive on my Equium L300-148 now refuses to read disks. It seems to burn them still, which is strange.
That must mean the laser has not burnt out, and the drivers seem to be working correctly.
I can see the drive in Explorer and I can eject it with the context menu.
I have tried a "Disable" then "Enable" in the Device Manager, but I have not tried uninstalling the drive then restarting.
    Any help would be apreciated.

    Hello
To make things clear: there are no much options you can try. You can try to remove optical disc drive from device manager and restart the notebook. The drive will be recognized automatically and the drive will be ready for use.
Can you tell us more about this issue?
Which formats you have tried to open? DVD movies, music CDs, different data files?
    Is there some error message?
If you don't have external HDD you can save all important data onto empty DVD medias.
Of course the best way to check functionality is to set factory settings again, but if you don't want to do this it makes things more complicated.
What you can do is to contact nearest service provider. They can install recovery image on separate HDD and test the functionality. If there is some serious problem the drive will be replaced for free (if the warranty is still valid).

  • Satellite M40-145: CD/DVD drive won't read some DVDs

    Hello!
I own a Satellite M40-145 purchased just over one year ago; the DVD driver worked perfectly until three days ago, but today I discovered something... peculiar. It still reads commercial DVDs and burned DVD+R, but apparently it doesn't read burned DVD-Rs anymore. I have tried with different DVD-Rs I burned through the same DVD player, with no success; trying to access the DVD yields a "insert disk in D: drive" message.
In this case, I'm talking about movies on DVDs. Please tell me there's a way to solve this without sending the computer to customer service...
I'd hate to think it broke down just days after the expiration date of the warranty.

    Hi
Well, you can try to remove the drive form the device manger.
After new reboot the drive should be recognized again. Check then if its possible to read the DVD-R CD.
But the issue sounds as a lens calibration error. If you use different media the lens must be calibrated again. But if this procedure fails, the drive is not able to read or write the DVD for example.
Unfortunately, in such cases only the drive replacement will solve this issue.

  • After SL-DVD drive won't read any dvd-ejects it after spinning some time

Yesterday I bought the SnowLeopard DVD in order to do the update of my Mac OS.
Right after inserting the DVD in the drive (MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221) it started to have some problems with reading the DVD.
The Drive has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my Toshiba laptop.
I tried several times, but the drive isn't able to read the DVD and now has the same problem with other CD-Roms and DVD.
I am very suprised (and angry) about it, especially because I hardly use the drive.
As a lot of other people are having the same problem, there seems to be a structural problem with the drive and I think that Apple has to clearify if they are planning to do something and what.

Mine MacBook seems to be doing almost the same thing. The SL disk spins a bit then is ejected. It does the same thing with my first SL disk and the one Amazon sent as a replacement. I had the same trouble with the 10.5 Install disk purchased retail. Apple sent a replacement Non-retail disk and it worked. I can burn DVDs and read DVDs I've burned.

  • Satellite L30 - DVD drive won't read CR-R / CD-RW

I have an L30 with a Mat****a uj-850s DVD ram drive. It reads any pre-recorded cd/dvd, but when inserting a CD-R or CD-RW with files that have been burnt to disc it just tells me I've inserted a blank disc.
Also won't burn a disc (tried to burn files from Itunes and it appeared to be working but the disc was blank when I tried to play back).
I read on another forum that I should delete the upper & lower filters registry values in the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} folder in the registry, which I think might have been the wrong advice to follow.
I deleted the upper and then realised the lower wasn't there anyway - it hasn't solved the problem and I think it may have caused some instability as I've had some weird errors with different applications since then.
    Please help.

    >deleted the upper and then realized the lower wasn't there anyway - it hasn't solved the problem and I think it may have caused some instability as I've had some weird errors with different applications since then.
Well... from my personal experiences the burning results depends from different factors.
First of all not all CDs and DVDs are supported and compatible. You should test different manufacturers!!!
Secondly the different preinstalled burning applications could have a bad influence on the burning process!!! I use only Nero and I??m very satisfied!!
Last but not least the CD/DVD malfunction could cause such issue.
SO what to do? ?:| Check firstly if other medias works correctly and try to burn with Nero. It would be also advisable to renew the OS to avoid some program errors!
    Good luck
