Editing what? Editing how? We need more details as to what you wish to accomplish and your criteria for what would constitute "good" to you before anyone can offer any informed opinions.

Import DVDs, Edit, Burn New DVD

I have a friend that basically wants to import DVDs he's recorded into his Mac, edit and title them, then burn new DVDs.
He really wants to be able to get the .VOB files off his DVDs, edit the footage, then make a new DVD.
Is Final Cut Express designed for this, or can it be done in iMovie '09?

Getting the files from the DVD into FCE is the tricky bit.

DVD Editing Software For MAC?

Hello all. I am going to make this a very short post.
Quick question
On my windows machine, I used to use a program quite often called TMGEPENC DVD Author. Here is the link:

This software would load a DVD (Directly from the disc. no converting neccisary), and, would let you edit out commercials, and, then, burn it to another disc (or the hard drive)
Note - the reason i would edit commercials, is, I use my stand alone DVD burner hooked to my TV to record different shows so i can watch them on the weekends. it is alot nice than sitting through the commercials.
Can someone please tell me if there is an equivelant to this software in the MAC world? And, if there is, can you please tell me the name of it?

Handbrake is another option. While a lot of people like MtR, I have actually had better success with HB instead.
I just forgot to add that to my recommendation.
I took a European PAL DVD and extracted it to MPEG4 files with HB, then imported them to iMovie and did the edits, fades, and transitions. I then used iDVD to make the menus and burn to DVD.
It turned out very nice indeed, especially since it was done with software that was either bundled with my iMac or free.

Lossless DVD editing

I've been reading a lot of posts and wonder if I've got this right . . . . IT IS POSSIBLE to edit DVD without recompression loss by using Cinematize for the editing and then exporting the MPEG 2 clips to DVD Studio Pro for burning. If this is true, can I use DVD Studio Pro 2 or 3 for this?
Right now I have Mac the Ripper, MPEG Streamclip and mpgtx, which work for getting clips out of the DVD, but which need to go to iMovie for editing. This would cause a loss of quality because of having to be recompressed in iDVD.
I'd like to burn all my old (very old) home videos to DVD and edit at my leisure. However, I can't afford that many DV tapes.

Yes. DVD SP accepts MPG-2 compressed clips (and so does Roxio's Toast), but neither are video editing programs.

I'm not sure you will see much effect from the decompression/recompression process as you are starting from home videos (VHS?) which is hardly 'film quality' to start with.

MOV to DVD editing in premiere and encore

Hi.. Sometime ago I bought a digital still camera which can also shoot 640x480 30fps quicktime mov files.
To edit,combine and share the videos I am planning to write them in dvd with premiere pro cs3 and encore cs3. Although I have learned some about these programs I dont know some important preferences of exporting.
Could someone please answer these questions so I know what I am doing...
1. When starting a new project or exporting to encore to make mpeg-2 DVD what should I select in field order...Lower, upper or no fields (progressive scan)?
2. Likewise is my source video coming from camera as quicktime mov interlaced or non-interlaced? If it is non-interlaced it would be ridiculous to de-interlace, right? Although I used gspot to understand that I couldnt get any information about that issue
3. When I compare my source movie and output DVD I find that quicktime movie is a little bit sharper than DVD output in my computer. Is this normal or should I sharpen it a little in premiere pro before outputting to encore?
4. As I can edit in premiere and export as mpeg-2 I dont need any other quicktime codec, do I?

Your camera is not suited for video editing. Either use a proper video camera or use a different application.

Converting files with DVD editing problem

I am trying to rip a dvd to my computer, and then open it in IMovie. I downloaded mactheripper and I guess that it making it into a vob file, but what kind of file do I need to make this into to use it right. Do I need to convert vob to avi or what, help. I guess I need a program to download....that's....FREE...ha

Ok, that doesn't sound like any fun. What program
would be good to use to rip things straight into a
format that I can use with an editing program. I.e.
straight from dvd to .avi or quicktime or something.
DV is a format for editing. That's the format a DV camera would send to iMovie. Other, more compressed formats are more difficult for editing because frames depend on data from previous frames.

Newbie to DVD editing -- please help!

I finally braved transferring a video to DVD on my (non-computer-related) VCR/DVD burner and was successful. That I feel victorious over such a simple procedure indicates my level of newbieness. Some time ago, I posted some queries here about editing/copying non-copyrighted DVD footage, and was given to understand that it's tricky no matter how you approach it.
What I want to do is take footage like home movies &c., transfer them from VHS to DVD on my (non-computer-related) VCR/DVD burner, then edit them on my iMac using Final Cut Express, iDVD or whatever it is that's used to snip out undesirable parts, make cool menus, and that sort of thing.
When I try to open the DVD I just burned through iDVD or Final Cut Express, I get various errors, or the video files are greyed out (i.e. are not available to be opened).
I can watch the DVD on the computer just fine.
So my questions are:
* How do you edit DVDs you've transferred from videos?
* Do you have to buy a third-party data converter?
* Is there a brainlessly easy way to do all this?
Also, as I was playing the DVD I burned, I tried to take a screen shot, but it wouldn't let me. Any way around this?

This is NOT the approach you should take. Conversion of your content to MPG-2 on a DVD disc should be the LAST step in the process.
iMovie and iDVD are designed to work with DV stream video content and not MPG-2 compressed content. To use iMovie, you would need to deencode the MPG-2 content to DV; edit the content; and then use iDVD to recompress the content to MPG-2 on output.
Your best (and easiest) approach is to buy or borrow a DV Camcorder that has play-through capabilities so that you can playback your VHS tapes, passing the signal through the DV Camcorder to the Firewire input of you Mac computer using iMovie. Then send the edited movie to iDVD for the addition of menus and burning to a DVD.
As an alternative, you could use something like DVDxDV at http://www.dvdxdv.com/DVDxDV.overview.htm to convert your MPG-2 content on your DVD to DV stream content for use in FCP or iMovie, but all the additional steps will reduce image quality.
BTW, no matter how you convert to DV video, you should remember it requires about 13 GB per hour of running time, so be sure you have lots of free hard disk space.
Also, as I was playing the DVD I burned, I tried to take a screen shot, but it wouldn't let me. Any way around this?
Try playing the DVD with the VLCmedia player at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html . You should be able to make a screen capture with it.

Novice DVD editing question

Newbie questions:
In the past i have edited DVD+RW discs on Windows using CyberLink PowerProducer. Is there a similiar product available for Mac? What i want to do is to be able to directly edit burned DVD+RW discs on the fly like this product does.
Otherwise, what is the best product to edit DVD content? Final Cut?
Since i am a novice, what is the best way to rip content from a DVD (made my self from home movies, etc. ), edit said content, and burn to disc?

MPEG Streamclip (free, www.squared5.com) will rip DVDs. Just drag the VOB files from the disc into the Streamclip windows and export to the DV NTSC format. Then drag those files into iMovie, which is probably your best choice for free, novice editing.

HT203477 I've been trying to burn a DVD edited with FCP_X. I keep getting a "Quick Time Error 0" and my DVD doesn't burn. Why!

I have been getting a "Quick Time Error 0" when I try to burn a DVD even when using a dual layer DVD. The total length is only 2.5 hours long! I've been trying to burn this DVD for 2 months.

Can you tell us how and what does the burn.

Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition

I bought this game on Amazon.com and it didn't give me any system requirements except "Macintosh." It turns out that this game is only compatible with Mac OS 8.1/9.1 (except for Myst III: Exile). I love this game; how can I play it on Leopard?

I'm almost 100% sure there is no way to run classic (OS 9) in Leopard. Apple has removed that functionality. If you have an Intel Mac I'm pretty sure there is no way you could play it, period. Unless of course you find an OS 9 emulator that is Intel compatible (Sheepshaver maybe?).
It's going to be a pain (or perhaps even impossible), no matter how you slice it.

DVD Footage for FCP Edit - how to tell if NTSC or PAL?!

Hi all, apologies if this seems like a stupid request but I have a job at the moment calling for me to extract footage from a DVD, edit in FCP, add a few bits from Motion etc., but I can't work out if the DVD is NTSC or PAL!
I intend to extract the video (no issues with copyright) via DVDxDVPro but am unsure if the DVD has been encoded in NTSC or PAL. The footage it contains is from both the States (NTSC) and South Africa (PAL) so how do I tell? I don't want to go through a standards conversion if I can help it.
I am keen to try to retain as much quality as possible (client can't provide tape) so also any thougts on the best output from DVDxDVPRo for FCP editing?

Thanks for this - it clearly shows the TV standard and the resolution plus 4:3 etc., so everything I needed for confirmation.
Glad I cheked because it was in Pal - thought the conversion in DVDxDVPro looked a bit ropey.
This realy baffled me - seemed so simple but couldn't find a way to tell the standard. Learn something everyday...
I am using DVCPro for export from DVDxDVPro - anyone thoughts on a better option?

Looking to edit a home DVD

Hi,
I am a bit new to DVD editing.
I took a video to Kinko's and asked them to transfer it onto a DVD for me. They did, and I can view it fine on both my powerbook and my home DVD player, however, I would like to do some editing to it.
I have a powerbook G4 and was wondering what I would need to do in order to import that video file into iMovie HD in order to edit it and then create chapters, and then re-burn it on a DVD.

It would have been better if they put the video as DV stream instead of a video DVD. A video DVD is highly compressed compared to DV, so you have lost quality.

I have Logic on my iMac and want to install it on my new mac book but my mac book doesn't have a dvd drive. I tried to download the upgrade but it looks for an older version. How do I get Logic on the Mac book ?

You can only use the App Store version to reinstall on your new Mac if you bought Logic via the App Store in the first place.... and then it will appear under the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store App so long as you are signed in using the same Apple ID you used to purchase Logic via the App store in the first place.
If you bought the DVD edition of Logic Studio then you must initially install using those original DVDs to begin with and then update to the latest version of your version of Logic via software updates.
No DVD drive? Buy an external one.. Amazon do a very cheap basic one that works well..
or...
Use Remote Disk if you still have your older Mac which has a built in DVD drive...

About WWDC video style recording and make dvd

How I can do same way as presentation and speaker in camera on same screen? I believe there is software and hardware make that work. I use Sony HD camera, Powerpoint or keynote. I would like do WWDC style to record for my client's seminar because look more professional and formal and make DVD. I post example of photo of last WWDC 2014 below.. I hope that save my time and effort than spent many hour to edit and put slide file and speaker's video together and result look crap. How Apple do that?

You will know that the video of the conference is made by recording the speaker in front of a large ultra high resolution video screen.
The streaming video of the conference is made using a video editing application, with an effect called picture in picture, to have two videos playing at the same time.
To make a similar effect in Keynote, drag and drop two video files, one for the graphic and one of the speaker onto the slide then position and size as required.
However as you want to create a DVD, edit your video in a video editing application such as Final Cut Pro or iMovie using the Picture in Picture effect, then use "File > Share" to create the DVD.

Could not edit in Photoshop.

Could someone please assist?
I am using Encore DVD 2.0 and Photoshop CS2 which I have been using for the last 18 months or so without any problems. I am now working on a project but when I try to edit the menu in Photoshop from Adobe Encore DVD (Edit Menu > Edit Menu in Photoshop)I get the following message:
"Could not edit in Photoshop. Photoshop does not appear to be installed"
I have reinstalled Encore DVD with the hope that it might pick up its connection with Photoshop but it did not work. The only thing I have changed since the last time I used Encore successfully was to take my Matrox RTX10 card out of its PCI slot to try it out in another pc, but have since put it back. I am reluctant to reinstall Photoshop at this stage as it would mean I would have to take all the plug-ins and reinstall Encore DVD once more, as there is a sequence on how to install the Above programmes when using with the Matrox RTX card to avoid issues.
My question is does anyone know if there is a folder or file in the Encore DVD programme from where I can point the programme to Photoshop? or some other way.
Would appreciate help from someone who might have had the same experience.

You're a legend. That worked. In fact i had already come across this fix but I had associated the 'Menu" file from Encore to photoshop which of course did not work. Probably because it was associated with something else. After reading your response I realised that I should have associated a .psd file instead which worked beautifully. Many thanks and much appreciated.
