It's very possibe you have a failing optical drive, I suggest you substitute a known good drive. If you don't have one I might be willing to loan you one if you cover the postage, or would be glad to let you keep it if you have something of equal value to trade.
If you'd like my help, feel free to send me a PM.
Also, if you want to rule out the possibility of a sofrware error, you can boot the system from a linux liveCD, if it boots up and runs fineusing linux, then your problem is likely software, but the simpliest solution would be to swap out the drive.

No it just comes with a Y USB cable.
The drive caddy I got from MCE Tech with the purchase of the Optibay to put the MBP superdrive in also came with a Y USB cable.
Now what does that tell you.
All Slimline DVD drives are the same as far as power requirements. Asus supplies a Y USB cable in case it is needed to fully power the drive.
I have not had to use it on either my Dell notebook or on the MBP.
There is nothing special about the Apple external superdrvie and with slot loading DVD drives if the motor that draws in and ejects the disc fails you throw the drive away.
There is a reason there are very few slot loading DVD drives of any size. You also can't use any mini CDs or DVDs with a slot load drive. Not unless you want to kill it.

  • Dvd ejects during burning in iDVD

Near the end of burning a iDVD slideshow to the DVD the DVD ejects. What's wrong?

iDVD SlideShow function is limited to 99 photos PER SlideShow. You can have several of then (up to 99 too)
But I rather use another tool
    • Video editor as FinalCut as I here have 100% controll
    • Not iMovie'08 to 11 as they can not deliver what iDVD needs - interlaced SD-Video - but discard every second line in the picture resulting in a big quality loss.
    • iMovie HD6 - delivers
    • FotoMagico™ (included in Roxio Toast™ Pro bundle)
And note: That DVD created with any program is just as standard: interlaced SD-Video
Feeding iDVD HD material will not improve the final DVD result but degrades it due to Bad downscaling.

  • DVD ejected before completed

I am trying to burn a DVD movie that I made on iMovie onto a DVD-R using iDVD. I get to the "multiplexing and burning" stage when the DVD is ejected. Nothing displays on the screen, it looks like it is continuing to burn. There is nothing burned onto the DVD. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I am not getting an error message or anything, just the DVD ejecting without the movie completed.

I think Snow Leopard is the problem.
    A: might be on a G5....
Question: Isn't snow leopard intended mainly (if not exclusively) for intel macs?
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC223
"Snow Leopard is an upgrade for Leopard users and requires a Mac with an Intel processor."
The above may also help address your concerns on the following thread also. But if not just come on back:

  • T420 DVD eject button - terrible placement; driving me insane

Every time I pick the laptop up or am laptopping in bed I am constantly hitting the DVD eject botton on the T420.  This is my 10th ThinkPad over the years and have never had this problem.
I'd even prefer a blank to fill the slot  or a battey option than have it the way it is now.
Is there a way to disable this button or be able to lock it with some kind of driver that can sis in the systray?
Can Lenovo give us a new optical drive?

Hmmm ... I think I gotta drop by a Think shop to test it for myself too
ColonelONeill, did the DVD rom eject when you hold the sides of the laptop? It does not "curve" in like the previous models?

  • Replaced DVD-ROM with 18x MCE Superdrive. Will not complete a DVD burn!!!!

updating my gigabit ethernet dual 450 G4 powermac. swapped out the original dvd-rom drive with an 18x SuperDrive from MCE. Running Panther 10.3.9 with all updates. Machine has upgraded 120GB hard drive, 512 RAM.
Driver loads from MCE install disc. Using Toast 7.1.2 to burn a data DVD-R using automatic "best speed" setting. Drive revs up and "writing lead-in" appears in Toast window, but no blue in the progress bar. Toast then says :Writing disc", and displays a time (usually 1:40), but does not count down. Eventually, the drive becomes silent and the burning process just hangs there. I've let it hang for about an hour. Tried burning a DVD-R with 20MB data, up to a disc with 2GB data, and same thing happens. I then abort the burning process, having to Force Quit 5 times to close Toast, then restart. OS prompt appears as Toast opens, saying "disc contains no volumes blah blah, eject, ignore etc). I eject the DVD-R and ALWAYS on the write surface, there is about a 1/2" of data that appears to be written, but the disc is obviously unreadable. I have wasted 7 out of the 10 free DVD-Rs that came with the MCE drive. Used PatchBurn 3 and it says drive is already supported. System Prof says burning is "vendor supported".
Tech support on the phone asked about master/cable settings. Superdrive is master (as was original DVD-Rom I removed), and I kept intact the Zip 100 drive underneath, which has no jumper plug on either of the 3 sets of jumper pins.
I ran the burning process: 1.) with Zip Drive unplugged from shared cable, SuperDrive still set to master. 2.) with Zip drive connected and set to slave, SuperDrive still as master.
Same burning problem with Toast 7.1.2 as well as the older 6.0 version.
I managed to however burn a CD-R of data in both Toast versions, and disc burning appears to be supported in the iTunes burning preferences.
What else. The drive is listed in Toast as DVD-RAM. And apparently tech support has told me this is an LG 18x SuperDrive, and I was instructed to load the driver from the install disc for 20x SuperDrive. The driver froom the 18x install disc (the obvious one I thought, since it is an 18x burner), did not enable burning according to System Profiler and iTunes. I used PatchBurn 3 to create a driver successfully, but had the same burning problem.
I'd rather find some answers here, than have to call MCE support in Irvine California and use up minutes on my cell!!!
Please, help. I'm sure I can send the drive back to macmall.com. Can anyone recommend a SuperDrive that will actually work in my G4 Dual 450?
    Thank You!!
    marc

Today I bought that very same model LG - branded, black front from a local PC retailer. It was cheap, bulk without any package or cables,in fact it was only 5 Euros more than a CDRW...
    Apple System Profiler says : DVD-RAM GSA-H55N, vendor Aopen/LG, atapi , firmware id : 1.03 , internal disk id : 0.
I have a copy of Toast Titanium 6.05 -> upgraded for free at Roxios website to 6.1.1 and succes - I have burned a 550 MB CD-R with Toast under my beloved Jaguar OS 10.2.8 at full speed settings in virtualy no time ;.)
I am bidding on ebay right now for a copy of Apples ilife (2003) which contains idvd3, the only version which will run on my specs.( idvd4 is some 700Mhz minimum ) . I will try tomorrow how about patchburn in the Jaguar edition will make this drive compatible with Finder's or itunes burn buttons.
Anyway, Toast 6 seems to be able to do the job, and it can make DVDs and Video-/ Picture and what not else CDs too. I did not doctor with the speeds settings, I left all to "best possible" and it burnt in very little time a disc I can read on my Tiger Mac too.
The G4 PCI tower ( 1999 - 2000 ) is built on around the same mainboard as the blue/white G3, it has internal 100 MhZ IDE-bus, so it works even this old and I would expect any G3 tower wo also support that combination of Software/OS/Burn Apps. Those old machines can do wonders, let alone you need the Software from back when it was "High-End". - Of course I could put Tiger and ilife 06 on it, but then it would get ridiculous slow and unproductive.
Just my few first opinions with the all new Burner in the oh so old machine

  • PS CS6 (mac) dvd ejects before being read.

PS CS6 (mac) dvd ejects before being read.

    Hi ,
We really apologize for all the inconvenience which has caused you.
Are you able to mount other optical media successfully?  If you put the Photoshop CS6 DVD in another Macintosh is it able to be read properly?  If you can read other discs fine and the disc won't mount on another Mac then it is likely a problem with the DVD.
If the DVD can be mounted on another Macintosh then it is probably an issue with the optical drive on your Macintosh.
Btw if you need the install files you can download the trial from http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop.  You can then use the serial number included with your software purchase
In the meanwhile if these steps doesnt resolve your issues you can contact Adobe support by following the link below:

  • Instant eject with a hitch

I recently (within the hour) started having problems with my optical drive in my Macbook Pro. I am currently trying to make duplicates of a dvd using Toast 8 and a Lacie external DVD burner along with my internal burner. After I burned about 4 discs the internal drive stopped taking blank media discs (but it will play DVDs and CDs). When I insert a blank dvd the drive changes speed trying to detect the disc and then after about 15 seconds it automatically ejects with no errors. At first I thought it might have been that I picked up a trash/used dvd from the stack but it worked fine in my external. I checked system profiler to see if it was having a malfunction and this is what it said:
    HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA:
    Firmware Revision: AE39
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2048 KB

    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Media:
    Media Type: DVD-R
    Blank: No
    Erasable: No
    Overwritable: No
    Appendable: No
The part that stuck out the most to me was the line "Blank: No" which leads me to think it doesn't support blank discs anymore. It incredibly weird for a computer to change it's hardware profile randomly and if it hadn't happened to me I would probably say it's impossible. Anyone have any ideas? I have applecare, but it's 4:25AM and I'm trying to burn a stack of DVDs before school.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Hope this isn't too late to help you, but one thing you can try is to repair permissions with Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder). Open Disk Utility and click on your hard drive by brand name and then on the First Aid Tab. Then click on "Repair Disk Permissions". Repeat until there is nothing left to repair.
This may or may not fix the problem.
Also, I understand that MBP's can be fussy about the brand of DVD's used, but I'm not sure what brands are good or bad. I believe that Verbatem is considered to be good.
    Good luck!

  • DVD made with iDVD not playing in DVD players

I have a iMac G5 and iDVD 4. I use FCP to edit. I have made many DVDs from exporting my sequences to quicktime. Then I import that export into iDVD, and this has always been fine. For some reason, my latest project will only play on my computer using this method, not any of my 3 DVD players. What could be causing this? Did I change a setting I'm unaware of? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've watsed a good many blank DVDs from this glitch. Thank you!

I have a similar problem having to do with the menu.
I have a client who needs dvds burned with their logo as a background. When I import a tiff (or any other format) into iDVD4.0.1 on the simplest template available (brushed metal 2) everything burns fine, the disk plays on a computer, but on commercial dvd deck it freezes when you hit play (one unit indicates "pause" on the display). If I remove the graphic from the background, and burn that to disk
    , it plays fine.
The iDVD help says you can drag your own photos to a menu, so if this is causing a problem, they certainly aren't aware of it. What bugs me, is why isn't there a "blank" template (or is there one that I've missed)?
BTW this has also happened to me at work two years ago with an earlier version of iDVD. Yet it doesn't happen on my client's version of iDVD (I have a call in to see what version they have). And who do you call when Apple only refers you to forums?
Thanks for any info, and please excuse any ignorance on my part.

  • Did Apple Break HD-DVD Playback with Mountain Lion using Apple DVD Player?

First of all, kindly spare me the commentary about Blu-Ray beating HD-DVD. Agreed and not the question. I have perfectly good reasons for using HD-DVD and it works very well for my purposes.
I authored an HD-DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4.2.2. as I have done many times before on Snow Leopard, but this time on Mountain Lion. When I try to play the HD-DVD, either from the physical disk from a disk image, the menu appears, but when the play button is pressed, the menu stays on screen, but the player shows the timecode of the movie playing, but with no sound or picture.
Thinking that perhaps the menu got corrupted, I put the same HD-DVD into a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and it played perfectly! Conclusion: Not a DVD Studio Pro problem.
Thinking that it might be DVD Player, I copied DVD Player 5.4 from the Snow Leopard MacBook Pro to the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro (which was running DVD Player 5.6), and the HD-DVD still had the same issue on the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro, under either of the DVD Player versions. Conclusion: Not a DVD Player issue.
The HD-DVD does mount and initialize, so it's not a hardware issue with the optical drive.
Conclusion: It would appear to me that it's an OS issue with Mountain Lion breaking (either intentionally or unintentionally), HD-DVD playback. Anyone know anything more about this issue? Anyone else saddened to see Apple turn into Microsoft circa 2005, and the MacOS turn into Vista? I haven't seen much of anything about it in the forums, which is why I'm posting it here.
Thanks Apple. I just spent the better part of 3 days transcoding and authoring this HD-DVD, only to have you screw it up for me 2 days before my film festival (the perfectly good reason for using HD-DVD). Kindly spare me the, "Why don't you encode a ProRes blah blah blah quicktime movie." Heard it all before.
I knew I would regret upgrading to Mountain Lion, and I do more and more each and every day as I continually find more things that it broke. Yet another reason to add to my list for downgrading to Snow Leopard. I'm up to about 30 of them. Or to abandon Final Cut for Adobe products.
Thanks and sorry for the rant, but I'm justifiably frustrated.

Update: The Apple Store in Nashua, New Hampshire replicated the issue on their own hardware, so yes, Apple did break HD-DVD playback with Mountain Lion (it does still work in Lion, they discovered). The Apple Store reported the issue to engineering, but the more people that report the issue, the more likely Apple will do something about it. Thanks Apple.

  • Help!  'Leopard CPU Drop-in DVD' Ejecting on Brand new macbook pro

Hey everyone. I just recieved my highly anticipated Macbook Pro that came preinstalled with OSX 10.4.10. I haven't installed anything yet because i am wanting to install Leopard first. The computer came with the 'Mac OS X Leopard - CPU Drop-in DVD'. After I put the dvd in i have tried to install it 4 different ways. One, just by double clicking the 'Install Mac OS X.app' icon (i've actually tried this about 4 times). Second, I tried to install it by using the Leopard DVD as the start-up disc as described in the 'troubleshooting leopard' doc online. Thirdly, I tried (three times) to restart the computer with the DVD in while holding 'C' down. And finally, my last attempt i installed the Tiger discs thinking that might do it...after i installed Tiger which was already preinstalled on the computer, I repeated the above mentioned methods...and everytime the dvd gets ejected on the restart...a couple seconds after the 'apple logo' appears on bootup...then, the 'not working' icon (circle with the diagonal line through it like 'no smoking' logo) appears.
help!!! i'm anxious to get Leopard running!!!! i've been dreaming about this computer for about 3 years now.
    any help is appreciated!!!

ok...i'm not sure how at all...but, a couple hours have passed since i posted this and while i was hoping someone would reply i was finishing up some old work on my old, extremely slow emac. anyways, i decided to go ahead and try to install leopard again from the normal standard method. (which is just clicking the icon once the leopard install window comes up). Guess what? now it's 50% into the installation!! i don't want to count my chickens before they hatch...especially after some of the discussions i've read about leopard so far...but, i'm hopeful
who knows how...i'm clueless and it doesn't make much sense to me. but, i'll come back and let anyone who cares know how the install went.
note for anyone with similar problems:
another strange fix to the 'leopard dvd ejecting on install' is to let the dvd chill in the drive for a couple hours...then try it again. HAHAHAHAHA!!!! worked for me

  • Cd/dvd ejects every few seconds

The cd/dvd ejects every few seconds with or with out a disk loaded.  ???  Not sure why.  Thanks

    Hi,
This could be caused by a malware. Try to go to the BIOS and see if it ejects there. Tap F2 when you turn it on and it should go to the system setup (black screen). Let it stay there. If it doesnt happen there then it could be caused by a malware. Run a virus scan.

  • Safari Prevents DVD Eject

I created a DVD which has some basic html data on it. It seems that if this html is accessed by Safari, it then become impossible to eject the DVD normally. I can narrow it down specifically to Safari (I'm using Version 5.1 (6534.50)). If I merely mount the DVD and do nothing, I can eject without any problem. Also, if I browse the content in Firefox, the disk will eject fine. But the second I load up the web page in Safari, the DVD locks. Even after quitting Safari entirely, I will still get a message upon attempted eject: The disk "disk name" wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it. Again - I know Safari is the culprit because when other other programs are in use, the DVD ejects fine. It only becomes a problem after I launch Safari. Once locked, my only remedies are either to force eject the DVD or restart.
For what it's worth, I created this DVD using Toast 10 Titanium. It's a hybrid Mac/ISO data DVD. The Mac side of it has some custom data: custom background image, icons, "blessed" to auto-open uopn mount. Is there anything else I should do so that it plays nicely with Safari?
    Thanks for any help.

Do you have any Safari extentions?
