DVD Encore 2.0   my first thoughts

Having completed my first major project in Encore 2.0 I thought I would share some of my experiences. My project was basically a family album DVD I had been meaning to do for years. The content for this DVD consisted of
About 350 scanned photographs
About 200 digital photographs
Video Footage taken on a MiniDV camcorder
Motion Menus with Audio sound track
There are about 30 menus in the project mainly because there is a family tree and each person has their own menu, and there are sub menus for weddings etc.
b Thoughts having built the project:
Apart from one time, when I was having major problems with the UI taking forever to respond, I have really enjoyed using Encore 2.0 which came as part of my recently purchased production studio.
I like the UI and the ability to use a flowchart to define the flow of content. I also like the ability to tailor existing menus or design new ones in Photoshop.
My only negative thought about Encore 2.0 is the way it handles assets when the application regains focus. In short, if you are (for example) editing a menu in Photoshop and then return to Encore it enumerates all of its assets again. If you have, as in this project, 500+ stills this is just a no no. So my work around this was to create a mpg slide show in another application and import this as a single asset into Encore. The only downside of this is that you loose the ability to have file names as subtitles. But given that, by adopting this approach, the UI delays reduce to a very acceptable level, I think the benefits far out way the drawback.
b One major advantage of handing stills in this way is that disk rendering time is reduced from 3 hours to 5 minutes a definite improvement :)
In short I like it and if anyone has the production studio premium and hasnt yet played with Encore I would recommend they give it a try

Avoid the use of WMA files at all costs.
These are not DVD compliant, and will therefore need to be transcoded.
If they are already compressed you will be recompressing an already heavily compressed file and it will sound dreadful.
PCM (or WAV) is far superior - it is uncompressed. However, the bitrate is larger by a significant degree, and will rapidly eat into your video space.
If the video duration is not too long ( under 1 hour), and the project is a single layer disc, this is not an issue.
For longer running times though, allow Encore to turn the WAV file into a Dolby Digital file instead - the drop in quality is barely perceptible to 99% of users.
Make sure the source is at 16/48 resolution - avoid using 44.1KHz files as they will have to be padded with zeroes. It will not degrade the sound, but it will not help matters either.
Stills.
There is absolutely no point at all using any other resolution over 720x480 for NTSC, and 720x576 for PAL.
If you can, you should set the PAR in CS2 - there are even nice, helpful presets for you.

  • DVD Encore subtitles

I built a rather complex project with DVD Encore v-2.0. Three languages - English-German -Hebrew. I use FAB script oriented subtitles (pictures) The whole project is appr. 3 hours.
When I try to either make a folder or imagefiles the programme says: "creating subtitles failed ..." or "Out of memory" . In other words all my work (took me about a week) is in vain. I phoned Adobe Technical Support, but nobody seems to understand what the problem is or they denie that it exists att all!!!!
Please is there anybody who can solve my problem.
    Best regards,
    Janjens Molenaar, Blaricum, Holland

Have you tried to compile the project without any subtitles? Have you tried with English, then German, then Hebrew to see if it's just one particular language that is not being accepted?
I've been working on a series of music DVDs over the last 6 months that are fairly subtitle intensive. I'm using 3 languages (English, Spanish, and Italian) with 2 copies of each subtitle (one at 100% from the top and one at 0% from the top) to give the user the choice of where they want to view the words.
I'm using a 32 pt Arial regular font for all languages and haven't had any difficulties since I started creating my STs in Lemony Subtitler. I export them in Encore 1.01 text format and they import perfectly into Encore 2.0.
When I first started trying to create STs within Encore, I got a lot of out or memory type errors and save project now errors, which is very unusual for my machine. I suspect these errors occurred as the result of constant back and forth tweaking of each ST segment to make sure it lines up properly with the music. Apparantly, Encore doesn't like all that stopping and starting and moving STs up and back on the timeline. I never lost anything, but it scared me enough (I know how long it takes to create accurate subtitles) to buy a good subtitler like Lemony.
Since then, all has been fine, not to mention that I can very easily store txt versions of all my subtitles from Lemony for later editing. Encore doesn't save subtitles in this way since it automatically converts them to graphics.
    Peace, BJ

  • Erro no DVD ENCORE para exportar e para criar menu.

  • ThinkPad X230 in Hand, First Thoughts Review

I'm the lucky recipient of an early ThinkPad X230, it's a review I got yesterday and have had about 24 hours to mess with now (well, I did sleep, so make that 16).  Happy to answer any questions, I'll copy and paste below much of what I wrote in the preview on LaptopReviews.com minus some of the images and video to be bandwidth friendly.
Earlier this week Lenovo announced the ThinkPad X230, a 12.5” screen ultraportable targeted at business buyers. While the X230 won’t go on sale via Lenovo.com until June 2012 (keep an eye on this X230 product page for availablility) we were lucky enough to receive an early review sample to try out. As most of you familiar with the ThinkPad brand know, change is generally slow from one generation to the next to keep the enterprise buying folks from getting all worked up. One thing that certainly almost never changed much was the keyboard. Until now that is.  The X230 and the rest of the ThinkPad line have adopted a new keyboard styling that uses an island style key layout and drops down to six rows of keys from seven. There are a few other changes and added features, the keyboard backlighting being my personal favorite, but for the most part the X230 is just an evolution of the X220 design wise and of course has updated internal components to boost performance.
    Keyboard Comparison with X220
Let’s jump right to the part a lot of people are interested in hearing about -- the keyboard.  Again, a video helps to show exactly what the visual differences are so we’ll show that first and then talk about the perceived usability differences:
ThinkPad X220 and X230 keyboard Comparison
The first concern I had was whether the spacing of the keys was the same or different enough to cause a problem getting used to the X230 keyboard.  I was also concerned that the travel distance and feel of the keys would be different.  Rest assured, despite the very different look, the keyboard is very similar in feel to previous generations and the typing differences were really only noticeable to me when I had both the X220 and X230 next to each other and I could test the difference.  Here is what I found to be different in terms of feel, at least as far as my perception goes:
The X230 keys seem to have a slightly lighter touch, you don’t have to push quite as hard to register a keystroke
The X230  key surface area is slightly larger, I don’t have calipers to measure this exactly, but you can see it’s the case.  This is partly why Lenovo is claiming the new keyboard makes typing more accurate.
The X230 keys felt slightly more slippery and not as textured as those on the X220
Keep in mind, those are just the perceived differences in feel.  The layout has changed from six rows to seven rows, which forces a repositioning of keys that could trip up users used to the old ThinkPad keyboard.  To name just a few:
The “Forward” and “Back” browser shortcut buttons above the left and right arrow keys are gone
PgUp and PgDn move from the top row down to above the left and right arrow keys
The Delete button has shrunk and moved further to the edge of the keyboard, which is almost impossible to reach without lifting the hand
Print Screen and Insert are both moved, the Pause button and Scroll Lock are gone
Home and End have been moved and are actually now more within reach of the pinky than before
All media key functionality using Fn + has been moved to the F1 – F12 function keys, this is a good thing and eliminates the scattered nature of media keys in previous generations
There are probably more differences in positioning, but those are the major ones.  I’ll also note that the Enter key is now black instead of blue and they’ve removed the “return arrow”.  In fact, a lot of the icons have been axed to make the look more clean, the arrows on the Shift key, Caps Lock and Tab keys are all gone.  It certainly does have the result of the keyboard looking more plain and clean.
The real test is of course whether your typing is affected by the changes.  I generally type at around 80 WPM so figured I’d do a typing test using this WPM online tool to see how I faired doing the test on the X220 and then the X230.  Look, I’m not here to make an advertorial for Lenovo but I got the exact same 76 WPM score on each notebook and was ever so slightly more accurate on the X230 where I made no mistakes.  Of course, that’s one trial run, but it’s all I had the patience for and figured it was enough to provide anecdotal evidence that most users should transition just fine.
ThinkPad X220 typing test: 76 Words per minute, one mistake made when I mistyped “M” instead of “N” for November (though there is such thing as Movember and it is a worthy cancer charity I might add)
ThinkPad X230 typing test: 76 Words per minute, exactly the same result as the X220 but no typing mistakes
Another new feature on the X230 is the keyboard backlight.  You can toggle between two levels of keyboard backlight brightness or use the ThinkLight positioned in the screen that shines down on the keys.  Here’s a video demoing how this looks and works:
And below is a picture of the backlight set at its strongest level:
Bottom line on the keyboard changes, the usability is still top notch and all of the essential keys such as alpha, numeric and common cursor movement keys are in the same location.  The biggest challenge with changes will be in regards to remapping your brain to find and reach the keys that moved such as Home, End and Delete.  The backlighting option is a definite improvement and recommended upgrade.
    Size and Weight
While the ThinkPad X230 weighs 2.96lbs when you use the small sized 4-cell battery, Lenovo isn’t changing its marketing to call this an Ultrabook.  The thickness ranges from 0.75-inches at the front to 1.05-inches at the back due to the slope.  The 1” thickness is fat compared to the 0.68” the upcoming ThinkPad X1 Carbon will have.  That under 3lbs of weight doesn’t hold for the standard 6-cell battery either, this review unit has a weight of 3lbs 7 ounces (3.44lbs).
    Full First Thoughts Review Here

    Thanks for the excellent review.
I am disappointed in the new keyboard choice, outside of the move to chiclet keys the move to 6 rows is just blasphemous.  As a user and owner of 10+ thinkpads, the x220 and t420s will be my last.
Lenovo may not even care as the general business consumer doesn't favor one keyboard style over the other, but legions of thinkpad fans will be left behind.  A sad state of things indeed.

  • TS1367 Hey. My iMac screen comes on but it won't let me type my user name in. I first thought the batteries were done on the keyboard or Magic Mouse but they are both flashing. Cam anyone help

Can someone help. My iMac screen comes on but won't let me key in my details. I first thought my batteries were done but the light on the keyboard and Magic Mouse are flashing. My user name appears but I can't insert my password

Paul_31 is correct.  The problem is almost certainly a Bluetooth connection issue.  The flashing green lights mean that a connection cannot be established.  You want steady burning green lights.  Using a wired keyboard and mouse will allow you to troubleshoot that issue.  A quick check would be to see if your "problem" keyboard and mouse can connect to another-different Mac.  If they can then the issue is in you computer but if they can't (and I suspect that will be the case) then the problem is with the keyboard and mouse.

  • DVD Burning takes so long, first time around - why?

    Hi guys,
I wonder if anyone can help with a query I have please?
I use an external DVD burner to burn DVD's for a customer each day (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MRF82SD22/).
The interface I'm using on this particular burner, is the FW800 interface, and burn times for the same job, are typically around 7minutes per session.
However, (and here's the issue) - first thing every morning, or after a long period of inactivity, a burn will take as long a 18 minutes, then come back to the 7 minute burn time over 3 or 4 burns. If I use it constantly, the burn times sit around 7 minutes all day long . . . . but never first time!
(I noticed too, that the DVD takes a while to mount on the Desktop at times.)
This happens constantly, and I've been taking note of this phenomenon for over 3 months.
    iMac is about a 18 months old (2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo/2GB Ram)
    OS is 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
    DVD's are DVD-R
Filetypes being burned are always .MPG.
If anyone can explain to me why this may be happening, I'd be very grateful.
    Thanks in advance.

No replies so I would assume no one has or noticed.  The only thing I thought of, but not sure it applies to your case (which is why I didn't reply but I mention it now anyhow) is perhaps a disk image is created the first time before burning it to the dvd and then reused for additional copies.  The fact that you said you do this throughout the day made me think you couldn't be burning the same thing each time so new disk images would have to be created for those new times which throws out that disk image theory.

  • Can't Burn DVD:Encore Error code 5A803

I'm working with the CS3 suite and whenever I try to burn a DVD the following message comes up: Hardware error sense code 5A803. Pleae contact harware manufacturer.
I'm working with a Pioneer DVD burner, I was able to import an ISO file and burn that to DVD using Nero but every effort to burn from Premiere via Encore brings up the 5A803 error message.
    Help, please send help!
    Thanks,
    Flip

    Flip.
Firstly, please don't make multiple posts on the same problem. Once is enough.
Secondly, I strongly suspect that your Nero installation is the cause of the problem. Did you allow it to install the Packet Writing utility? If so, please see the FAQ for details on how to avoid this issue in future.

  • Having tbl making dvd-encore cs4,win 7,64bit

looked on forum for win 7 encore cs4  Win 7 troubles and found 2, turn off power saver and download some Roxie file. Did both but still freezes, not responding and have to end session, one at 12 min left, and now 2 min left. Also can't eject dvd, have to turn off computer.  This is a SD dvd, 90 mins total time, the 1st encore project with new i7 computer, --last night it did burn it but the last 10 mins weren't there. Transcode is automatic. Any ideas--I'll see if I can work on this project in my XP computer, never had any tbl with XP....

Thanks for the reply, I will look into your ideas. I don't have screen saver on and no Nero, iTunes was downloaded with Quicktime and I beleive Win7 uses Roxio, I will check these out.
I put the hard drive docking station back on the XP windows quad core computer, the project was edited on this machine.
Encore burned the dvd  complete EXCEPT now no sound, only the menu sound. When I play the timeline there's no sound. This seems to happen when I make a change in PPRO and then go back to Encore. I then export the audio from PPRO and bring it into Encore as an asset, drop it on audio 2 and then all is fine. I did that just now and still hear no audio. I've been using Encore for a year and no troubles.  Glad I make the SD dvds 1st before the HD so I don't waste blu ray discs.
My win7 computer is a Dell with Win7 Ultimate, 12 GB ram, i7 920 processor, 1TB C drive and I use external drives to edit on in a docking bay with esata cable.

  • Burnning dual layer dvd Encore CS5.5 errors out.

Here is the greatest error I have ever seen.
I got to burn a dual layer dvd transcoded from AVCHD 1080i with fallowing settings.
Edited footage in PPro and send to Encore via Dynamic link, created dvd project using Mpeg2 with 9mbps, Dolby 192 for Audio.
File size to be burned on dvd is 5.67gb, aprox 1 hour 10 min transcoded with 9mbps, 720x40 wide screen, audio is 192kbps Dolby.
There are three menus one is main and tow sceen selection menus, noting fancy everything as default. menus linked as usual nothing fancy and and it is very basic.
All assets, that used for motion menus and main video is transcoded fine, but when it gets to put dvd together I get this error
Encore starts organizing videos for disk and after that it gets to this above and thats it. Press ok Build progress box gives fail message and option to Ok it. After pressing Ok button this box goes away to build panel.
I have tried to change an Automatic layer break to manual still get the same error, I have tried a custom layer break and still get the same error again, I have tried dvd, and an image, and folder for dvd, still the same error there to. I have redone project from scratch and still got the same result.
However previously I have burned many Dual layer dvds using the same method described, and same settings described, and never had this problem.
Nothing on the PS was changed except the updates installed regularly.
Anybody have any Idea what is this all about? Because I just burned 16 Blu Ray discs, and 16 Dual layer discs on one of the project, and next one a day latter this happens.

I'm having the same problem. not once did it, the encore was automatically break in the case of dual layer dvd. now he does not. I mark the box DUAL LAYER 8.54gb, do DVD disc or image or folder, or change the marking of the layer break from automatic tomanual, and it does not. in the end he always gives the message: duallayer requerid.
wanted to know how to do this manually break, because even in the manual or here on the website of adobe, has no suchinformation. does not show clearly how to manually break. please if someone can give a help, thank you.

  • Sense Code Error 31000 while burning DL DVD Encore CS5 Macbook Pro

While attempting to burn a Dual Layer DVD on my Macbook Pro I got this error: "Sense Code 31000" just before it started to burn.
I changed the burn speed, verified my laptop burns DVD+R DL discs. Any help is much appreciated. Must burn a master to duplicated 100 dvds by Friday. Thanks!

    Hi,
Sense Code errors are hardware or blank media related.
Try to burn with other blank disc, if it does not work then the problem may be because of burner.

  • First thought - speaker and weight....

First I want to say I love this little thing. It brings me back to my newton message pad 110 days.
This is more of a comment, not a complaint. I think the speaker should have been on the top. It is a little awkward laying down with the iPad in portrait view and the speaker is resting on me blocking the sound. I of course fix this by flipping the iPad with the speaker up. I am also thinking it would be nice to have a speaker on both sides when in landscape mode.
When I first picked up the iPad I was very impressed with the weight but after ho,ding the iPad in a number of positions, I find it hurting my wrists.
I am very happy to have the iPad and look forward to downloading lots of apps.
    Bryan

    Hi Bryan,
Isn't it great? But I think you answered your own question. There really is no top or bottom for the iPad. Rotate the screen anyway you want it and then flip the orientation lock switch next to the volume toggle. You have now defined the iPad's top and bottom.
It does get a tad heavy after awhile. I just rest it on some part of me.
