  • Macbook pro external DVD drive initialization error 70012

This is an answer to my own question and a comment about finding answers to questions on Apple forums.
    The situation
I have a Macbook Pro, late-2009 model. In 2013, the internal DVD or optical drive died. I purchased an Apple external DVD drive to be able to read DVD disks, listen to audio, and watch video content. Because the computer I own was built to read only the internal DVD drive, it did not recognize this new external drive. When I plugged it in, I received an error: A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]. Or , or DVD could not be found, initialization error[- 70012].
    The question
Given this situation, my question was, how do I solve DVD initialization error 70012?
    The answer
Since my Apple Care plan had long since expired, before spending time and money at the Apple store to solve this, I decided to look online. After searching general sites and more and more specific sites, I found several posts on forums about my problem. The most helpful of these, with respect to an external DVD drive, was posted on CNET, by Topher Kessler (June 10, 2011 2:24 PM PDT):
    http://www.cnet.com/news/addressing-dvd-player-error-70012-when-using-external-d rives-in-os-x/
The key to his advice was twofold:
    1. Hardware: The Macbook Pro was programmed to recognize the internal DVD/optical drive alone.
    2. Software: The preferences in the Macbook Pro were set to open Apple's DVD Player when a disc is inserted into the drive.
To play audio or video discs on an external drive, the computer needed to be instructed to recognize the external drive, plus appropriate software needed to be opened. Mr. Kessler's advice went from hardware (i.e., get a new internal drive), to software (i.e., use different audio or video software), to operating system (i.e., alter the code in the operating system). Like with Goldie Locks, the first was too expensive, the last was too invasive, but the middle option was just right.
I searched for free software to display audio and video on my external drive and found two that could do the job quite nicely. There are others, but these seemed to be the most recognized and highly rated:
    1. MPlayerX (http://mplayerx.org/download.html)
    2. VLC Media Player (http://download.cnet.com/mac/media-players/?rpp=30)
So, I didn't have to buy an internal DVD drive and I didn't have to alter the code of the operating system. I just needed to download free software, install, and play.
    The points to learn
    1. Computers involve both hardware and software, therefore solutions to computer problems can require fixes to one, the other, or both.
    2. The simplest solution, and the least expensive, is to be preferred over the more complex.
    3. What went wrong for someone else is not necessarily what happened to your computer or software.
    4. What solved someone else's problem may not solve your problem.
    5. Just because nobody has posted information on how to solve your problem doesn't mean there isn't a solution to it.

    Hi Duane,
Thanks for the info! That's some catch-22 for DVD Player... but useful info. I guess I'll just pick up a generic DVD-ROM to replace the drive with.
As to the external drive, do not USB 2.0 cases run at the same speeds at Firewire 400 cases? (the same drive has no issues on other machines for playing dvds... just the lampshade iMac)

  • Error 70012 dvd reader

hello, does anybody knows about dvd error 70 012 after upgrading in moutain lion 10.8.5… french system thanks

Peruse the hits from a google search for error 70012. There are many.

  • Initialization error [-70012] in Mavericks

Have a MBP 15”, Early 2011 with a 2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, 1 TB 72000 rpm HD fused with a 120 GB SSD, running OS X 10.9.1 (12B42) the original CD/DVD SuperDrive is removed for the SSD, but installed into an USB case and connected external via USB.
After installing the SSD and fuse it with the HD, the original, now the external CD/DVD SuperDrive, via USB connected, worked fine under Mountain Lion but now, since upgraded to Mavericks, OS X 10.0.1, it works only with CD’s and even opens DVD’s but the DVD Player does not work at all (initialization error [-70012]) and prevents to watch any DVD movie.
I researched the Apple discussions boards and others but found not any helpful solution. There are not any DVD or iDVD files on my system. Checked visible as well as invisible files and documents. The Terminal also indicates that there is no such CD or DVD (iDVD) “No such file or directory”.
    However, the System Profiler shows clearly that there is a MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-8A8: connected with “ Firmware Revision:          HB14 / Interconnect:          USB / Burn Support:          Yes (Apple Shipping Drive) / Cache:          1024 KB / Reads DVD:          Yes / CD-Write:          -R, -RW/ DVD-Write:          -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW / Write Strategies:          CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO.”
Resetting NVRAM/PRAM did not resolve the issue either. Tried to use 0xED Editor but the command at the “DVDPlayback.framework: /System/Library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A”, brought no indicators of “Internal” or the equivalent hex code. Any smart individual out there, which can help, step by step to get the DVD Player working?
    Thank you.

Logical or not, and that is your opinion, it is how it works and doesn't work. Sorry but the built in DVD Player App only works with the Superdrive installed inside the system.
Maybe you applied the HACK in Mt Lion, and don't recall you did it, and when you upgraded to Mavericks is got overwritten.
Been like that for years with many different versions of OS X and DVD Player App.
If the Superdriove is installed inside the system you can use the DVD Player App with another DVD drive connected by USB but the Superdrive must be installed inside the case, and or connected to the secondary SATA connector.

  • DVD error -224

    初めてPremiereProを使って、mpgファイルをDVDとして作成しようとしています。
    編集などを済ませて「DVDへ書き出し」を行うのですが、書き込み途中に
    [DVD error -224]

  • (DVD Error -1) Encore DVD 1.5

Gracias. Cualquier cosa pueden contactarme a mi correo [email protected] Gracias.

I'm basically having the same problem, I do know that for me AVI files wont work, so I had to switch over to WMV, but I am having the same problem with the unidentified error while building the project.

  • Encore 1.5 DVD Error 9983

I'm trying to burn a project on my new Blu-Ray burner (LG Modisc BD Rewriter), but Encore 1.5 keeps popping up with this error: Device Error - Uninterpreted Error (DVD Error - 9983)
Anyone know what exactly that error means?  I'm wondering if my new Blu-Ray burner is just incompatible with Encore 1.5?

    Try this:
    http://sony.storagesupport.com/node/6563
    Looks like a burner/media error.
You can check to see if Encore is the problem by building to an iso, then burn to disk using ImgBurn (for PC).

  • No Video Decoder available for this stream type (DVD Error -47003)

    Hi all,
I am so confused, I have never had these sorts of issues before, now nothing works. In premiere pro I export a video as Microsoft DV/AVI, the compressor is DV(NTSC), pixel aspect ratio is D1/DV NTSC (0.9). Audio is uncompressed 48000Hz, 16 bit sterio.
When I import into Adobe Ecnore 1.5, all is fine untill I try to place chapters into video, no video in monitor window, and when I preview the whole thing and click on one of the buttons in my project I get the following error (Video Decoder available for this stream type (DVD Error -47003), and the screen is black.
    Any help would be great.
    Anthony

PPro/AME is using the Main Concept Encoder - in the Format menu there are three varieties of MPEG2 - but of course, they are not QT and I was being sloppy (and ignorant) in my description!
I have now tried as well, per your suggestion, DV AVI and uncompressed AVI, both generating the same error unfortunately - and again I tried an Animation QT, but same again.
The most bizarre thing is that the odd clip that does work I now find is 768x576 - I really can't understand why Encore is even letting that through the door, never mind previewing it. I just tried deliberately exporting one from PPro, but of course as expected Encore said it was the wrong size.
I rolled QT back to 7.1 - same error. Could roll back further I guess.....
The reliance on QT movies is largely my preference and habit I guess - all my work is cgi. In the first instance image sequences taken into After Effects for comp - writing them out from there as QT movies uncompressed/Animation, or Sorenson 3 for client preview is just something we are used to.
It does suck but I am close to resigning myself to following your suggested route of burning RW discs and testing them that way - annoying and frustrating.
One thing I have left is to move Encore to my other machine, a leaner and faster box that I use for my 3D work - as there's less on it perhaps it may be easier to pin down what is breaking the preview.
I have found reports of this error going back to 2005, but no solutions - like the first two posts, people seem confounded and unable to pin down a reason for it. Adobe's knowledgebase contains no result when I enter the exact error line either.
I'll see what I can find and come back to this thread with results positive or negative. Meantime I suppose I might be looking at upgrading after all....the problem is I have sufficient Adobe products that I should be, for economy sake, looking at one of the suite upgrades - I've already seen that's around £1,300, which firmly puts me between the proverbial rock and hard place!
Your help, Jeff, is much appreciated and I will post back on this thread when I have something, hopefully within a day or two.
    Julian.

  • A valid DVD drive not found (error -70012)

    Hi.
I get this message when I try to insert a DVD or start the DVD Player app:
'The was an initialization error: A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]'
It won't allow DVD to be insert, they just kind of hit a buffer. There seems to be no power to the DVD drive.
    Just happened one day.
    Macbook Pro running 10.6.8
    Any ideas?
I'd try to get an appt at an Apple Store near me but they are all booked up!!
    Thanks

I can only think of two possible reasons. 1. The optical drive is dead. 2. The DVD you put in for some reason went in at an incorrect angle, and jammed something in the drive mechanism.
If you buy this reasoning, you could try to wiggle the DVD. I would use the edge of another cd, inserted about half an inch (one cm) till it touches the one inside, and see if you can get some movement up and down of the one inside.
Needless to say you would be doing this at the risk of further damaging the optical drive as well as the DVD.

  • Qwerky..dvd/cd drive error -70012

i listened to a music cd yesterday, then today put in a picture cd and nothing. had to use the paperclip. long story short...i put in the same music cd and it too never appeared on the desk top. paper clip again. when i fire up dvd player it has this code. any help?

Many thanks for the suggestion.......I won't even pretend that I understood the bit about the registry....
However, after I posted last night I turned off the lap-top (as against re-start or hibernate) *and when i switched it back on today, the DVD was back and seems to fine.*
Cannot explain, but will keep your post on file in case the problem re-occurs.
By the way, the problem didn't just appear and disappear overnight, it has been there for a few months through many re-boots, system restores, physical removal and re-installation.
So maybe it just sensed I had asked for help and decided to stop playing silly-buggers with me!!
    Thanks
