DVD exceeds Capacity : 3.9gb file turns to 4.45gb, normal?

I am new to Adobe Encore CS6, as this will be my first DVD menu and authoring that I have done.
The project is for a feature length film. We have edited it all in Final Cut Pro and compressed it down at 8mbs in apple compressor. The feature length finished (.m2v) is (according to my Windows 7 PC) is 3.9gb if I right click and say "properties".
I load it into Encore with the accompanying audio file and then make a new timeline and drop both in. The video file still reads 3.9gb in size under the "projects tab". I then click on the "Timeline" tab in the upper-right...and it all of a sudden says my project is already 4.45gb large.
*this is rough the real version I want to burn has menus, extras, trailer, audio commentary, subtitles, etc., but for our purposes it seems that the big problem is just with the movie file itself*
I guess my question is WHY is Encore adding an addtional 0.5gb onto my file for just having a timeline? is this normal? how then should I estimate how large to make my compressed video file? i was certain if the movie was only 3.9gb that I would have plenty of space to still add my extra features and still fit it on a DVD-R (dvd5 4.7gb) and not have to jump up to a DVD-R DL (dvd9 8.5gb).
Basically my issue comes down to money. At a duplication facility, it costs twice as much to print onto Dual layered dvds and so I am trying to avoid this if at all possible.
Any info would be much appreciated. thank you,
Chris

Your solution will lie with Jeff's direction. Ultimately, you can only get on the disk what will fit based on the length of your movies, including extra content - video and audio - and the size of menu, especially motion menus.
I get confused about Encore's estimates every time this comes up. So once again, I tried to sort it out.
Basically, Encore says it is tracking GB in the build panel, but it is really tracking bytes. A DVD that is called "4.7 Gigabytes" is really only 4.38GB - it is 4,706,074,624 bytes. To get to Gigabytes, you divide by 1,073,741,824 (1.024 * 1024 * 1024). Which is about 4.38.
What this means is that if you read your file size as 3.9GB, it is actually 4,187,593,113 bytes. To make this confusing within Encore, Encore reports your file in the project panel as 3.9GB. But when it lists the amount of the disk used and free in the build panel, it is reporting bytes with "GB" after it.
I just did a no menu test with a 1.69GB m2v and 41.5MB ac3. Encore reports 526KB of ROM used (the size of empty rom), used as 1.91GB, and 2.79GB free on a 4.7GB disk. (Remember that these are all bytes.) Built to a folder, Encore reports that it is writing 1.89 GB (really bytes), and the actual output folder size is 1,891,278,848.
My recollection now is that it may have been only bluray that was the subject of comments about Encore padding its predictions of size on disk. What we are seeing here is no padding.
Here is a bitrate calculator that may help you understand more about the factors that relate to the bitrate of your movies. http://dvd-hq.info/bitrate_calculator.php#Calculator
I can't find my favorite at the moment, that plugs in some allowance for menus and motion menus.
You're going to need some trial and error since you don't know how much space you are going to use for your menus. You'll add the running time for your extra content (actual timelines) as if it were part of the main movie.

  • Network files turns Unix Executable, remains normal when viewed on other.

    Hi all,
Seeking help from experts as i am about to lose much of my hair over this issue.
Having to support a team of vido editors, one of their PowerMac G5 have this weird problem that i have no idea on how to resolve it.
    Situation:
Raw video footage stored over network for all PowerMacs to access anytime.
This PM G5 viewed the folder containing a list of footage as Unix Executable Files. This apply to the whole folder containing various sub-folders where all footages are stored.
On other 2 PM G5 (within the same network), the folder have no problem showing that it's a video footage with a nice little QT icons instead of a black little box (Unix Exec).
    What i did:
Ensure the network setting is setted. AppleTalk is on and everything else is standard across the 3 PM G5.
Did maintainence by performing cache clearing/disk repair/permission repair via AppleJack on the problematic PM G5.
    Result:
Still the same situation as i arrived to the PM G5. Files recognized as Unix Exec on this PM G5 while other PM are ok.
Anything that i can do to help rectify the problem? The video editors needs me to clear this issue fast as they need to edit those footages by Final Cut and is unable to import those Unix Exec files.
Before i forget, i tried pulling off those files (in GBs per footage) to desktop and changed default application to Quicktime. I was able to view the footages by QT but unable to import into FCP as FCP rejected with "Unknown File Format" error message.
    Please help. Thanks in advance!
PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Final Cut Studio

Just an self update on my situation.
Can't believe it is just a simple issue afterall.
Having to double check on the other Macintosh's access to the shared drive and make comparison to the problem G5, realized that all but one is using SMB to mount the volume and the problem G5 mount the volume via AFP.
Remount the volume via SMB and everything is just as normal as others.
    Cheers!

  • Buring DVD-R after creating Video_TS file

I built a DVD in DVD Studio Pro and the log did not report any errors. I then tried to burn a 4.7 GB DVD-R with the VIDEO_TS file but soon into the burning process I keep gettig the same error code "result code=18771" and the message reads "Could not record the disc b/c there is a problem with source material." Does anyone know what this means and how I can correct this issue? My file size is 2.3 GB so it should fit on the 4.7 GB DVD-R. Any tips?

Your project is already built on your hard drive. It might be a good idea to delete the build and do it again, but you can also select to format the current build. Select format from DVDSP and as your source locate your Video_TS folder. And as your destination choose hard drive as the output device. This will create a single file with the extension .img. You then use Disc Utility to burn the DVD.

I had restored my iPhone 5 to factory settings and that cleared the problematic "Other" problem.  Flash forward a couple weeks and the problem has once again resurfaced.

I am viewing your question from different perspective, that is, the issue that you face when you are ripping VOBs from a second DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc using Premiere Elements,
It is best to give the Premiere Elements version and computer operating system that it is running on. In the absence of that, I will generalize.
    Assuming that you are using
    Premiere Elements 12
    Add Media
    "DVD Camera or Computer Drive"
    Video Importer
Typically the Video Importer Save In: is C:\Users\Owner\Videos
Each of your DVD discs is going to have the same names for the ripped VOBs (VTS_01_1.VOB and so on depending on the duration of the movie). Consequently, after the ripping of the first DVD's VOBs and their save to Videos, you will end up with that "files already existing..." block for the ripping of the VOBs from the second DVD.
The answer is, for each DVD disc VOB ripping, to plan ahead and create and set for different folders in Videos in the Save In field of the Video Importer.
Please review and then let us know if that works for you. Please do not hesitate to ask if you need clarification on anything that I have written.
    Thank you.

  • Connect MacBook to DVD Player to Capture Vide Files?

Can I connect my MacBook to a DVD player to capture video files? The camera I am borrowing does not connect to computers and only spits out Mini DVDs. I tried to get the files off my work PC and they are in a .VOB format. Is there any other way I can get these files onto my Mac ASAP?

    Jacob and Jess wrote:

    No.
a computer needs digital 'files' or streams, a DVDplayer can not offer (few do...)
your problem is the SIZE of the disks: never ever put miniDVDs into slot-in drives! get finally damaged (the drive, not the disk). only 'workaround' is usage of an external, tray dvd drive..
converting a DVD into an editable format is a frequently question with dozends of options,... Search?
is that camcorder on Apples list of iMovie supported devices?

then, you can use iM as importer..

  • Original file turns modified after "Save for Web-"

    Hi everyone!
    I'm with a little question.
What happens to the edited file after saving its copy using the “Save for Web…” command? Why the original, unmodified file turns into “changed” (with * symbol after its name)?
    P. S. The same behaviour is in the Illustrator.

It's because the original file did get changed, because the Save for Web settings were changed. Photoshop saves most Save for Web settings so that the next time you use Save for Web, you don't have to set all the options from scratch.
I tested this by opening a file and using Save for Web without changing any settings, and that time the original document did not ask me to save before closing.

  • DVD Studio Pro recognizes video file as audio only

    Dear all,
After encoding a file in Compressor using the HD DVD 60 min encoding setting (H.264 format), DVD Studio Pro recognizes this file as if it's audio, while it is in fact a video (I've checked and tested that).
The strange thing is that I encoded a file a few weeks ago using the same settings and then everything went well.
Any idea what this could be? I'm using DVD Studio Pro 4.2.1 and Compressor 3.0.5.
Thanks in advance and best regards,
    Tim Metz

It is very likely that your conversion choices involve CODEC's, that PrE cannot handle.
Can you convert to a DV-AVI Type II, in the conversion program, as a test?
If not, then please run your final converted file through either G-Spot, or MediaInfo, to determine which CODEC was used for the problem video.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - some players, like VLC, contain many CODEC's for playback, that are not installed on the system, and many of those, even if installed, would not work with PrE.

  • Best Settings for Exporting DVD Footage in a Movie File

    Hello,
I've been trying to find the best settings for exporting DVD footage into a movie file from Adobe Premiere CS6.
I recently have been using my Magnavox DVD recorder for recording VHS tapes that I made long ago for shows and various other things, and no matter what, my footage doesn't come out as it needs to be.
Here's an example of what I did recently with my own settings:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFV4sT7rHGs
I'm not expecting HD footage, I know these are tapes, but I'm playing the raw footage on my Xbox 360, and it looks better than this. I had to directly use the VOB files on the DVD for this, as trying to rip the files into an AVI or any other format with a DVD ripper didn't do anything, in fact it degraded the quality and made the audio not play in Premiere.
So what would be some good settings for exporting a sequence with DVD footage that is from a VHS into a movie file, preferably one that wouldn't degrade the quality?
    Thanks!

First, read Why not edit mpeg http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/edit.html to get a general idea of why a VOB makes a very poor source file (which is a renamed MPG, with some other stuff like menu screens)
Also, Read Bill Hunt on editing a VOB/MPG file http://forums.adobe.com/thread/464549
Once you have a DVD compliant VOB on your timeline, and understanding that a standalone DVD recorder sometimes plays fast-n-loose with "compliance" per the DVD specification, about all you can do is export to standard or widescreen DV AVI and accept the fact that re-encoding an already compressed file is just not going to give great results

  • Importing AVI files turn green

    Hello out there,
I recently downloaded 4 AVI files. They played fine on my Qtime player. I then tried to import them to iMovie and when I did, two of the files turned green in the clip holder and the contents of the file were lost (from 349 MB to 21.6MB). I tried to play them and there was nothing there. I even tried to play them in Qtime and they turned green in there as well.It plays fine in VLC however and the "get info" reads the original 349 MB. I need to import these two files into iMovie. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

iMovie can "convert to DV" nearly any file QuickTime can play at import.
I haven't tried it as I rarely use the software. I make my Web based files from start to finish in QuickTime Pro.
