DVD fails to mount, tray opens

DVD fails to mount on internal DVD player (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D shipped with G5). After several seconds, tray opens. Problem is that unless the DVD mounts, it cannot be duplicated. Any suggestions? I can burn new DVDs with DVD Studio Pro. Just unable to load, mount and play DVD on the system. Thank you.
Jeanne

Hey there Tramble... You seem to of had close to what my problem is. Just wanted to get your thoughts on it. CD works just fine, reads and burns no problem. DVD will not read or burn and no mount. Was your CD working? Wonder if there is a reason why one will work and the other wont... Either way the price of a laser cleaner may be worth the try.
Thanks!

  • Can't install Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro - DVD won't mount

I am unable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro as the DVD won't mount.  This is an early 2008 vintage MacBook Pro, intel core duo...
I'm using a OS X Snow Leopard install DVD (family licensed).  This DVD has been used to install 3 other Macs in my house without a problem (about a year ago), but cannot be used to upgrade my MBP.  Actually, this disk mounted on the MBP exactly once - inserted with system up, the disk mounted.  Upon running the installed (a year ago), the computer restarted but hung in boot.  After getting the disk ejected and the computer restarted, the disk would never mount again.  I've defered upgrade for a year but at this point need to upgrade my MBP at least to Snow Leopard and possibly Lion.
The problem doesn't seem to be with the DVD, since it continues to mount fine in other computers, and in fact a borrowed Snow Leopard DVD also will not mount on the MBP.
BUT ... the problem also does not seem to be with the optical drive in my computer, as it can read & mount the install/restore disks that came with the computer as well as other CDs and DVD ROMs.  Only the Snow Leopard install DVDs fail to mount.
I've also tried mounting the 10.6 install DVD on my Mac Pro desktop, making it available over the network (ethernet) with DVD/CD sharing.  I can mount the remote disk from my MBP that way, but when I launch the installer, the application launches (its own menus are displayed, I can quit from menu, for example) but does nothing -- no windows open, nothing.
I've also tried "Remote Install" (again with the DVD made available with the Remote Install MacOS X application on my desktop), but when I boot the MBP with option held down, the remote disk is not available as a startup disk.
Zapping the PRAM did not help.
Am off to the store to get an optical drive cleaning kit and a blank DVD big enough to burn a new disk image, but would appreciate any further ideas at this point....

Solution that worked: Copy the Install DVD to a USB flash drive and boot from that.

    Hello Robert,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • DVD tray opens on start up after installing Leopard

I installed Leopard on my Dual 800 G4 tower a few weeks ago. I used Leopard assist and everything went fine.
However, ever since the installation, the DVD tray opens every time I boot up.
It makes no difference whether the tray has anything in it or not, and the tray stays open until I push it shut. Moreover, the problem is not confined to Leopard. I have three hard drives running on a SATA PCI card. Two of these drives still run Tiger (10.4.11) and they have developed the same weird behaviour with the tray opening on start-up and staying open until I close it. If I leave the tray open and reboot, it will close momentarily but then re-open as it reboots.
Apart from being annoying, it also creates difficulties in booting from a DVD. Has anyone any ideas about how this happened and what can be done about it?

Tom, you are nothing short of a genius!
It was the mouse. The mouse is fine on my G5 tower and on my wife's emac, but, for some reason that is certainly not known to me, it did not agree with my G4.
Now, before I mark the question as "answered", do you have any idea at all as to why the mouse would make such a difference? (It is an aftermarket mouse from China that blends with my white keyboard, but I had no hassles with the microsoft mouse from the G5, so it can't just be that it is not an apple mouse.)
    Cheers
    Rob

  • Updated firefox, the went to open it my computer said not recognized failed to mount on disk?

here is the window that opened: warning the following disk images failed to mount.
    Firefox 8.0.1 dmg not recognized

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 8.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    *Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
*Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.

  • G4 DVD tray opens when started or reset

    Hiya all,
I have a query that hopefully someone here can provide the answer to. I have updated the firmware of my G4 (400) to 4.2.8 . The update worked fine but since then, whenever I either reset/restart the computer or power it up the first time, the DVD tray opens and stays open. I can close it of course, but it opens again when I reset or power up the machine the next time. As a test, before powering up, I have removed the Macally keyboard I am using and then it remains shut -- so it seems to be the keyboard causing this? The question is: Why suddenly now? Before the firmware update, it worked fine! I only have this keyboard (my original G4 one is defective). Surely this can't be? Anyway I can solve this?
    Thanks,
    Rafael
G4 (OS9 & OSX) Mac OS 9.2.x Macally keyboard, original Apple mouse

Telling me to remove the drive so that it doesn't open unexpectedly is like an auto mechanic telling a person whose car door opens unexpectedly when driving to remove the door so it doesn't open: yes, it solves the problem of the door opening, but the car really isn't fully operational without the door. So, that suggestion really isn't very useful.
I was instead hoping that someone could provide some insight into what process is causing the door to open, and that would lead me to a setting I could change. For instance, I wanted to not have to provide a password after the computer comes out of standby, and I found an old post that points to a setting in the Control Panel Power options that is easily changed. I'm guessing that the answer lies somewhere in the logic that controls the power down sequence.

  • Dmg failing to mount

i have a dmg file that's failing to mount. the warning message says it's "not recognized". tried to repair it with disc utility which again failed to recognize. got it on disc from a friend who said it worked fine for him. he suggested burning it to disc with toast which said i couldn't burn a cd-rom xa file to dvd. tried to burn it to cd and it said it was too big (it's 3.2 GB) can't work out how to even burn it to a succession of cd's. can anyone help?

After you follow the above post and copy the file to your computer, open Disk Utility, the image should appear in the lower left window, if it does not then drag it there. Select the icon then choose Burn from the Upper Menu, when asked to insert a recordable disk you will need to insert a DVD and not a CD because of the size of the .dmg image.

  • A volume failed to mount/Operation cannot be completed

We bought a MacBook on the weekend. Our Apple concierge insisted that we can keep our music, videos and photos on our Windows XP desktop and "share" the files on the Mac--in other words, we can pull down what we need to edit or save on the Mac as need be.
We've set up the shared directories on the Windows machine, renamed the Workgroup to match the Mac and disabled the firewall. We've "connected to server" using Finder and can see the two shared directories we've set up.
But when I click on either one of them, I get an error message: "A volume failed to mount. The volume "Mac" could not be mounted."
After some time of being on the network, I see a Shared directory in Finder with my PC. If I click on the icon, the title bar says: "Connected as: Guest". The window displays the same two directories as above but when I click on one or the other I get an error message: "The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Mac" cannot be found."
I've called Apple technical support and the agent's response was: I don't think you can do that. Just copy your files to the Mac using DVDs.
Any ideas? We don't want to have to transfer a lifetime of photos, video and music to our laptop--we want to use the XP desktop as our hub.

I'm having the same trouble. From an Intel Mac Mini running 10.5.3 I've been able to access smb shares fine on an old PC running XP pro. These are shared volumes on external drives on the PC. I can still access them fine from an old PowerBook G4 running 10.5.3, but while I can see computers on the network, if I try to connect to a share on the computer I get the message "the operation cannot be completed because the original item for <share name> cannot be found". If I try to mount it via a shortcut, I get the message "A volume failed to mount. The volume <share name> could not be mounted.
In the console, I'm seeing things like:
6/2/08 10:45:01 PM com.apple.coreservicesd[58] NOTE: Using non-mach-based version of client -> server communication, via direct function calls.
but I don't know if that has anything to do with this or not.
Has anyone heard of a fix for this?
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • All downloads failing to mount and iTunes not recognising iPod!

My iBook G4 (Model No A 1055) needs alot of updates however i can't install anything. It downloads to the Desktop fine but when i go to open the attachment so i can actually install it a message comes up saing "The following disk images failed to mount" and the reason is a "corrupt image". I have tried to do this with Firefox, iTunes and Adobe and they all say the same!
I also now have issues with iTunes (7.2) which is all of a sudden not recognising my iPod shuffle (2nd gen). It doesn't come up in devices or anything when plugged in my iPod shuffle will just flash orange a few times and then nothing. I have tried to connect it to another (and much newer) Mac computer however it doesn't recognise it on there either.
Has technology just got so good my lappy is basically extinct and i need a new one or is there something i / Apple can do to help get me up to date with everything? Any help and feedback would be really appreciated.
    Thanks
    Louise

if you are running OS 10.3, it's pretty much obsolete
you can try getting OS 10.5 installed, but it can slow down the computer, 10.4 is not much use anymore either.

  • Fail to mount

for the past few days, I have been in search of a faster/easier bittorrent client than azureus. I had had some difficulty with it and downloaded something else. since that time when I try and download a new client, or even reinstall azureus:
    1. I don't get the little download window that I used to get which is basically a list
    2. when I try and open to install which ever program it may be,I get an error message. The two most common are: fail to mount, codec overrun
I'm not really sure what's going on. About the same time one day I turned on my computer to realize that it had reset itself. All the original applications where in the dock, and all my usual ones were gone. Also I am using firefox as my web browser, and that had also reset itself and started back at "starter page" meaning all my bookmarks and saved passwords are gone. And honestly I still can't get it back to where it goes to my personalized home page.
Can someone please tell me what I need to do so I can get my computer back?
    Thank you in advance

I should also note, that most recently everything was reset (again) after attempting a file vault process, which numerous times has failed to finish and I end up having to shut down the computer manually.
    Thought this might be useful
    Thanks

  • Final cut pro dvd fails to share

Over the past few months Final Cut Pro Share DVD fails most of the time. I tried restarting the program and my mac to no avail. I end up moving the video to my macbook and sharing the dvd on it. I am running OX 10.9.5  Final Cut Pro 10.1.3.

The error message seemed to indicate an encoding problem – apparently to DVD specs. See id you can verify this by choosing Output Device>Hard Drive  in Settings in export dialog.  If it fails, leave FCP open and go inside the library bundle and open up the Shared Items folder. If there is an m2v file and  an AC3 file, drag them to the Desktop to save them from being deleted when FCP is closed down.
Let us know what you find out.

  • IPod fails to mount or freezes iTunes through Firewire

I have an iPod Photo that I connect to my Macbook via the Firewire port. The iPod Photo supports Firewire and has worked like a charm for the past 8 months.
Recently, when I plug the iPod in it fails to mount. The iPod screen indicates that it is connected and says "Do Not Disconnect" but iTunes either fails to launch or fails to actually connect to the iPod when it is open. Further, the iPod doesn't mount on my desktop.
Other times iTunes or my entire computer will freeze up when I plug the iPod in via Firewire. My iPod hard drive makes loud noises and clicks. I suspected this was an issue with my iPod but I ran disk utility on it and it didn't find anything. I also have not had any issues with errors, harddrive failure warnings or battery failure warnings on my iPod. I also tried connecting it to my Macbook via USB 2.0 and it works flawlessly again without any issues.
Sometimes when I unplug the Firewire cable from the Macbook and plug it back in, the iPod connects to my computer and syncs to iTunes perfectly. But then after awhile it starts acting up again and I have to unplug the cable and plug it back in to get things working again.
Obviously the solution would be just to use USB 2.0 with my iPod, however I worry about my Firewire Bus. I planned on getting an external Firewire hard drive to use with my Macbook but am concerned that my Firewire Bus has gone bad.
Is anybody else having similar problems? Are their any solutions? Any way to diagnose a bad Firewire Bus? I have AppleCare, what is the replacement ordeal like?
    Thanks for any help.

It's sort of hard to tell where the problem may be. If you have an iPod Photo with firewire support... it has got to be a number of years old now. There is an equally good chance that it's the firewire interface on your iPod that may be bad. The only way to confirm if it's the port on your MacBook is to try another firewire device. To me, the behavior sounds more like a problem with your iPod... but it's impossible to say for sure without being able to try something else on the port in your MacBook. If you have an Apple store nearby... I'm sure they would be able to connect a firewire "something" up just to confirm if you're having a problem with your port or not. You might want to give them a call before you go... just to be sure they have something that you could try. Now that iPods are all USB... they might not have anything on display that uses firewire (although, I doubt that).

  • Tiger 10.4.11 update install reads disk image fails to mount

i've been trying to download the tiger 10.4.11 upgrade and when i go to open i get the following disc images failed to mount and a reason of item not recognized. i'm at a lose considering ti've downloaded the update several times with my slow dial up and tried disc utilty to correct it, all i want to do is use my new ipod nano but need to upgrade my itunes which means i need to upgrade my software please help pretty frustrated.

Would the same error occur if the update being downloaded is for an intel based computer and not the PPC, which is what is needed?
Here's the page for the 10.4.11 combo PPC download
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
Depending also what level of 10.4 you are presently at, downloading smaller combos/increments, may seem time consuming, but actually work better with dial up service. I was once dial up myself, and went through the same difficulty. Also with doing it this way, you would have to repair permissions with each download, and reboot if any were repaired. There would also be numerous security downloads, too.
