DVD from Tom Wolsky's "FCE 4 Editing Workshop" Book won't load

Greetings:
I recently purchased FCE and Tom Wolsky's "Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop" Book & DVD. When I put the DVD into my MacBook Pro, it sits for about 20 seconds, then gets ejected. The computer seems not to recognize the DVD. The DVD drive is otherwise functioning perfectly (for example, I used it to load the FCE application with no problem). I've tried restarting the computer and cleaning the (spotless) DVD. Anyone else have this problem, and can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks!

You should return the book to wherever you purchased it if the DVD is defective.

  • Apply Transition problem / pg. 138 FCE 4 Editing Workshop book

I have opened lesson 8 and followed well up through having two sub clips and applied -15 to the first and 15 frames to the second at the join point using the ripple tool. Step 6 on pg. 138 says in conclusion 'apply the transition.' I then drag the transition 'Cross Dissolve' from the Dissolve bin to the edit point between the two clips I have rippled. This is where it falls apart, or nothing happens but a clip of a lady squealing while serving food fades in and cuts abruptly off at the beginning of the second sub-clip. This lady seems out of context with the two scenery shots and worse yet, the timeline does not show the two halves of a pyramid leading into and out of the transition, only a clip of this lady shows up similar to a 'shuffle edit' but with a fade in transition from the end of the first sub-clip and an abrupt end where the second sub-clip starts.
I am thrown for a loop and don't know where to go from here.
Does anyone have a successful application of this transition from the book and DVD that could tell me where I may have gone wrong?
    TIA,
    Ken

The transitions should be applied from the Effects tab next to the Project tab, or from the Effects menu. It sounds as if you're dragged one of the transition samples that I provided on the DVD into the timeline.
I'll try it again, and yes, even though now, with a few trials going back through the process I was able to get the visible pyramid on the timeline and the two sub-clips now visually transition with dissolve from one to the other, there is still the audio 'woo hoo' sound of the lady serving food from what appears to be another unrelated clip. This must be from the transition sample I thought was the cross dissolve effect as it is labeled 'cross dissolve' and is in the effects tab from the Transitions folder I imported for chapter 8. Thank you Tom, I'll bet this works on the next try - I'll use the Effects menu this time.

  • FCE 4, Editing Workshop (Tom's Book) Questions

    Hi Everyone:
    First off, Happy New Year
I'm new to movie creating, FCE and the lingo. I am trying to make a DVD and thought I better try to walk before I run.
Based on recommendations here, I purchased Tom's book FCE 4 Editing Workshop. At first it was easy (sorta) but now I'm getting frustrated. Not Tom's fault, just too much info all at once.
I have searched the forums for answers and have found some, but am stumped so am probably going to ask questions that have been asked before, but here goes.
    1. What is the difference between the Viewer and the Canvas. In the book it says I'll spend a lot of time in the Viewer, I get that but what is the actual reason for two screens.
    2. I'm only up to Lesson 5 (still in it) will the Timeline be explained more?
    3. Is Marking I/O on clips how I remove what I like and leave behind what I don't? Do I use clips to make manageable pieces of viewing tape?
    4. Specific lesson instructions... Page 85 Tom says to Open clip in Viewer, mark specific I/O and then drag that "clip" into a newly created Bin. How the heck do I drag the small 9 seconds of marked I/O to a folder in the browser? I feel like an idiot but I can't get just that small 9 seconds dragged over. I just keep getting the entire clip dragged into a new folder.
Sorry to be do dense and ask so many questions. I'm technical, but just can't figure this out and it's aggravating.
I appreciate the help and thank you in advance.
    Regards,
    Kim Cassidy

    G'Day Kim,
    1. What is the difference between the Viewer and the Canvas. In the book it says I'll spend a lot of >time in the Viewer, I get that but what is the actual reason for two screens.
    I'll tackle this one.
The Viewer is a way to play a clip that is listed in the Browser.
The Browser does not contain any real media. That sounds crazy, right?
What is actually in the Browser are file paths to the real clips stored on your Scratch Disc. When you click on a clip in the Browser the file path to the Scratch Disc is established and the real clip plays in the Viewer.
It's like a short cut to actually going to the Scratch Disc and then playing the file in the QuickTime Player.
The Canvas and the Timeline are really the same thing displayed in different ways. It's settings are governed by the Easy Setup selected before a Sequence is started.
Think of the Viewer as a device that plays raw footage and the Canvas a device that plays edited footage.

  • Got Tom Wolsky's FCE book and I have a question

Tom - Thanks for your really nice FCE 4 book!
I just got a Canon HF100, and I'm about to shoot a LOT of video (about 100 hours worth). I want to get the settings right before I record all that stuff.
With FCE 4.0.1, is there any problems or cons if I shoot my footage in 30F instead of 60i ?
I know that Canon's 30F is a simulated 30 progressive, and it actually records in 60i.
My intention in using the 30F, is that I'm filming martial arts moves, and I want to to grab progressive frames from the video and put those frames into documents / books to illustrate the moves on paper. I don't want the pictures to come out jagged interlaced looking when I'm moving in the picture. I hope I'm explaining myself well here.
I don't want shoot everything with Canon's 30F mode, and then run into issues / problems with FCE because Canon's weird simulated 30p mode somehow screws things up and I should have shot in 60i instead.
Also, I like vivid colors in my video. I think it looks like a better picture. Should I shoot my video using Canon's Vivid color filter mode? Maybe I should just shoot in normal color mode and add the vivid color effects in post with FCE?
Please help, I need some expert advice here.
p.s. I'm shooting everything in 1920x1080. That's one thing that's kinda out of date in Tom's book. He said FCE 4 doesn't really do 1920x1080. But now with 4.0.1, I think it truly does support full HD. It's probably because he wrote the book before that feature was added. Thank God it was added... what a relief.

Just a couple of points before Tom responds:-
    1. Do a short test (possibly only taking minutes) using the different settings, 30PF and normal interlaced before you even dream of shooting anything serious. Burn the results to a DVD-RW (so you don't waste a load of DVDs on testing). This way you will see which method suits you best - things don't always turn out the way you might imagine.
    2. You can get excellent quality from an interlaced HDV frame if you deinterlace it (if necessary) before printing. You don't need to shoot progressive.
Anyway, do some quick tests and find out which looks better.

  • Help with FCE 4 "Editing Workshop" Lesson 4

At page 59/60 of Lesson 4 "Getting Material into Final Express" my fun with all the previous chapters comes to an end. If I go to File>Capture (Command-8) this does not bring up the Capture window as shown in figure 4.1. Instead it brings up a window with seven coloured vertical bars and a horizontal black bar saying "Preview Disabled". I also have no buttons and timecode displays at the bottom of the viewer. The window on the right is as shown. Can anyone tell me what I misunderstood? Where does the clip in figure 4.1 come from?

Hi, I'm a newbie but what you describe the screen being disable is what I see before I start to capture by usung one of the three choices 'Clip' 'Now' or 'Project'. I think it may be because your camcorder is sitting in a timecode break position. When you actually start ingesting it should reposition itself . Try winding your video forward in the disable window and you should see your video. Hope this helps. Denis

  • Since upgrading to Snow Leopard from V10.4.8 My copy of Open office won't load.  I've downloaded the latest version but it still responds with a "time out" message.  Anyone know waht's up and what I can do about it.  I can't even read my old files.

Since upgrading the OS on my MacBook to Snow Leopard my open office suite has died.  All the old files are still on the HDD, but even "finding" them doesn't help as they are opened, unhelpfully, in Text Edit, which loses some of the formatting.  I tried downloading the latest edition of Open Office, but it has made no difference.  Any suggestions?  Apple OS support has no solution to offer.

Found this, which might provide a clue:
I have had problems with 3.1 after installing Snow Leopard, with files created in MS Word - they come up with the text invisible (as though it's white, but changing the text colour doesn't help - by highlighting I can tell that the paragraphs are where they should be).
I upgraded to 3.1.1 but that did not solve the problem...
UPDATE: I found out the problem, it was nothing to do with Open Office, but rather the way Snow Leopard handles fonts. I went into the Font Book and found that a number of common fonts are now listed both in the "User" and "Computer" collections. I deleted the duplicate ones from "User" and now all works perfectly.

After copying all files from the CD on to my hard drive, the files won't work when I tried to open it in Premiere Pro. It says file missing or cannot be found.
Could anyone please help me with this?

  • Add/Edit Account page won't load! - BT Mail

    Hi there
I've recently bought my own domain name and wanted to receive my mail through an external program (e.g. Mac Mail/Outlook).  BT has sent me an error 553 message, saying I need to verify my new email through the 'add/edit accounts' page - but this page will not load!  (I've been re-visiting it now for over a week now and it's driving me up the wall!)
I wondered if anyone else had the same problem and/or knows a way around it?
    Thank you.

  • Help with making DVD from quicktime movie

I just made a dvd using IDVD of my FCE sequence. I selected make dvd from movie. The FCE sequence was comprised of two parts. The first part of the time line was a sequence I imported as a quicktime movie and the remaining time line was the edited sequence which was the later part of the completed fce project. When I made an IDVD copy of the sequence (after exporting the full sequence to yet another quicktime movie), the only part of the sequence that recorded on the dvd was the first part --the quicktime movie I imported into the full sequence. As I watched the video asset encoding process I saw the 2nd half of the sequence encoding onto the burn but when I play the DVD it only plays the first part of the sequence over and over again and is missing the second part.
    Any ideas why this happened?

  • No Wonder Why Our Tom Wolsky is a FCE Rocket Scientist!

    Just found this
    http://i.cmpnet.com//cmpbooks/gifs/covers/157820223X_lg.jpg

Your best bet is Tom's book. The link in the initial post above was for the original edition, but there is also a later edition for Final Cut Express 2. It includes a DVD where Tom shows you the differences between iMovie and FCE. Ian's post points you to the home page for all of Tom's books.
The Apple training book (Weynand), while worthwhile, is imho more of a reference ... ditto regarding Lisa Brenneis' FCE for Mac OSX: Visual Quickstart Guide ... Tom's book will get you up & running much more quickly than either of those books.
I have also found Ken Stone's Website very very helpful.

  • Problem playing with Multicam editing using samples from Tom's FCP 5 book?

I have some media from the DVD accompanying the book Final Cut Pro 5 Editing Workshop.
There are 4 camera angles of a music trio but unfortunately there is only audio on Camera 1.
This means that though I can switch video angles, the audio for about 75% of the final clip is missing.
Is there any way to ensure that the audio is added to all the clips and angles?

There is an excellent podcast tutorial series called "Creative COW Final Cut Help Tutorials Podcast (SD)"
    in the iTunes Store.
The latest three are very in depth concerning the new Multicam in 10.0.3 and address your audio concern and much, much more.
    Can't recommend them enough.

I am unable to import recording from DVD to iMovie so that I can edit it. Any suggestions?

The files on the DVD are MPEG 2 files and need to be converted in order to be usable in iMovie. Streamclip from Squared5 is one option although others are available. Wondershare is one as well. Just Google for mp2 converters and you'll find many.
