DVD- HDD-DVT?

Hey all. I want to make some vids and movies and I intend to mainly use imovie to edit etc for now. I have about £250 ($500) to spend and basically just want the best quality footidge for this money. I don't mind long download times etc as long as the quality is as good as you can get for that money. Can people make recommendations? I've done some research and DVT is looking best for the money being older technology but wabted some advice from macophiles. Also, is firewire the best download technique? Happy new year!!!

if you re-phrase your question to 'camera recommendations' ... we have hundreds of threads here at this board on this issue ..
for SingleDensity, any 3ccd panasonic is a good choice, for HiDef, the Canon HV20 is still an excellent choice ..
and: you've posted on the iMHD6 board, so your device HAS to be tape-based ... HDD/DVD/flashmem is only supported by iM08 ..

You don't need Apple TV.  But you do need the Apple Composite cable to connect your iPad to your TV.

  • Unable to capture video off of Hitachi DVD+HDD combined hybrid to iMovie

I have video captured on a hard drive in my Hitachi consumer grade camera. I am trying to capture that media into iMovie. iMovie is not recognizing the files on the camera and I am unable to select the media to transfer. I am connecting to my Macbook using a 6pin to USB cord. The camera ONLY has a 6 pin and A/V outlet. I have been unsuccessful capturing any media. If anyone has any insight, please let me know. I am using iMovie 6.0.3
I have heard that I should use firewire, however I can not find a 6 pin to firwire cord. If you know a way to work around having a firewire cord or where I can fine the necessary wire, I would appreciate it.
    Thank you.

iMovie HD 6 won't accept mpg-2 compressed files
With luck, you might be able to use them in iMovie '08 (but your camera isn't on the supported list).

  • HP Pavillion A6500f- Product KQ495AA-ABA- BIOHD 3 error-DVD and HDD seen as SATA 3 & 4

BIOHD 3 error when diags are run.  Bios sees DVD/HDD as Sata 4/3.  DED/HDD plugged into Sata 2/1. Only 4 Sata ports but bios sees Sata 1-6.  If I plug DVD/HDD into Sata 4/3, then Bios sees them as Sata 6/5.  Cannot get Sata 1/2 to see any drives.  Replaced Cmos battery and tried clearing Cmos.  No help.  Suspect original Hdd is good but new hdd has same no boot problem.  Setup disk for hdd wont boot on DVD so new hdd cannot be set up.  Can select hdd or dvd in boot path but still will not boot to dvd or hdd.  Any ideas???
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Sata 3/4 are correct.  Sata 1/2 are reserved for IDE devices.  A bad DVD drive caused the problem.  It apparently was hanging the bus and preventing the system from recognizing bootable devices.  A new SATA DVD allowed it to boot and thus reload the OS.

  • G4 ejects DVD drive on bootup

    Hi,
Since aquiring my own Mac G4 digital audio for dirt cheap (£0 ) I've been reassembling the peices. It works entirely, but I have a strange problem with the optical drives. Since the guy I had got it from removed almost everything (RAM, CD/DVD, HDD), I used spare parts to get it running. It boots into OSX 10.5 fine and everything seems to work ok, but upon powering the mac up, it ejects the DVD drive tray when the gray screen shows. It's done it with every drive I have tried and stops me from booting from CDs.
Is there any reason it could be doing this? These drives I know work 100%.
    Thanks
    Naoki

Now that the machine is assembled, reset the NVRAM:
    Boot to Open Firmware (Cmd+Opt+O+F)
At the Open Firmware prompt, type:reset-nvram
    Press Return.
At the Open Firmware prompt, type:reset-all
    Press Return.
The machine should then restart, settings returned to default and a new device tree created.

  • Freeview interference on TV tuner & DVD tuner but ...

I've got a weird problem that's been plagueing me on & off for the past couple of months...
Intermittently but at no specific times, the freeview signal from the TV tuner and the DVD/HDD recorder become pixellated but the Freeview signal from the BT Vision box is fine.
The aerial cable comes into the Vision box first & then passes through the DVD recorder to the TV. At first I was searching for possible causes of interference within the house - a nwly installed shower, central heating thermostat etc but the problem has still occured at times ie late at night when everything else is switched off.
I cant see why any outside interference would affect two tuners but not the one in the Vision box? Could it be related to cables between the Vision box & the DVD recorder or an internal fault within the Vision box? Pinning it down to where the fault lies is the problem; any suggestions folks ??

    TVrepairman wrote:
Do note that the Vision+ box has a very good tuner that often works better than other tuners at low levels.
Interesting that you say that TVrepairman. Over the last few years there have been many posts on this forum where people report the black BT Vision+ box indicating an inadequate signal whereas all other TV's and boxes in the house indicate a good signal. The BT Vision+ box is usually the first in any chain as well so should get the best signal. This is the opposite of the problem reported on this thread but has led people to generally conclude that the BT Vision+ box has very fussy tuners that require a very good signal. People often also state that the dual tuners mean it requires a better signal, but I would expect it to be boosting the signal internally for the second tuner so don't know if that is really relevant.
Even more interesting is the fact that many other posts reported that using the Classic software on the black BT Vision+ box all was well, but when they got upgraded to the New Look software the box then stated that the signal was inadequate. I can only assume that the New Look software uses different tolerance levels when deciding whether a signal is adequate or not? I would have expected that all Freeview equipment would implement common standards and guidelines in this area?
So the general consensus from this forum has been:-
    (a)  The black BT Vision+ box has two tuners so requires a stronger signal (I'm not sure how true that really is).
    (b)  The black BT Vision+ box has always had fussy tuners that require a stronger signal than most TV's (possibly due to (a) )
    (c)  The New Look software seems to have made the black BT Vision+ boxes even more fussy about the signal strength.
I'm no expert either, just reporting what is commonly reported/discussed on this forum.

  • CS3 - Simple Project - DVD-R Plays in Sony, NOT Panasonic!!

Hi all - I am following this thread with some interest. I am having the exact same issues with Encore CS3. VERY simple project, it all checks out fine, previews perfectly.
    My questions are:
I have an interesting issue on my first use in anger of CS3.
Does CS3 burn an "appendable" disk? I think it does! If so, will that affect DVD player compatibility?
I have tried direct burning to DVD-R (Verbatim), and it plays fine on my SONY DVD player, but comes up as "Unsupported" on my Panasonic standalone DVD/HDD recorder drive. Is this a DVD player firmware issue?
If so - I guess I need to find out how to close the disk through Adobe CS3. (Note I have tried closing these DVD-R's through another application such as Roxio 10, but it craps out stating it thinks there is like 400GB free on the disk!!)
Other things I have tried include building an ISO file AND a DVD folder, neither of which will burn using Cyberlink DVD Suite. THey are not recognised! Arrgh. Any ideas?
Anything else I can try would be MOST useful!!
    >Joe

Well I now have a few more tidbits to add... I have burnt the same avi file using Roxio 10 & it's DVD creator application, using menus etc. Success! So it's not the BD-R disc format, as I'm using the same brand etc throughout all this.
The only other problem I'm having is the audio which seems to drift around 0.2 and 0.7 (or so) seconds across the picture! (the original avi file is bang on). Is there any generic method to investigate the cause of such an issue now?

  • Cannot boot from cd/dvd drive

    toshiba a135..
    under f2 setup
i go into the bios boot options menu and it has four options..
    cd/dvd
    hdd
    fdd
    lan
i put cd/dvd at the top and save..then check and it truly is at the top of the list..i have even on one occasion disabled the hdd as a boot option..
computer does not read from cd/dvd and gives the missing ntldr msg..this is not the problem..
when i do f12 to select boot option it only list the following
    hdd
    lan
i dont know or understand how the f12 boot options are different from the f2 bios setup options..or how to get them synchronized so the computer can boot from cd..the drive works..spins and acts like it is reading..but is not loading because the f12 boot options do not have cd/dvd among the options and apparently the bios settings are not being used..
i need to know how to fix this problem so i can reload the operating system on the computer..

    irkeith wrote:
    hi rick..
that is a good answer..the reason i had not thought of it is the cd/dvd seems to function..it opens and closes..it spins..and the light blinks as though it is reading..is there any simple way to verify that this is the case..
    thanks
Well, the 'gold standard' to tell if the drive is good is to try to boot from it...
A fault in the read head or associated circuitry would not stop the tray from opening/closing, the drive from spinning or the read light from flashing.
You might try cleaning the optical lens.  Use a Q-tip and denatured alcohol, very gently.

  • Sony HDD to ATV - advice needed please

Fellas, maybe what I am trying to do is straight forward to you but it is baffling me.
Kit: PC running XP with external WD hard drive. Apple TV. Sony DVD/HDD recorder. 500gb Time capsule. 500gb. QuickTime Pro. (and iTunes of course).
Scenario: I want to take old films that I have recorded on the HDD from public service broadcast and store them on my external hard drive to watch whenever (streamed to my ATV).
Problems: I have to split the recorded films in half as they are all 5-6gb and my discs are 4.4gb. Maybe that's life, no big deal. I'm sure the right software can merge the files. Mind you - 5gig for a film!!!
The bigger problem is that once I have transferred the files to my laptop they are in two folders: 'Video RM' and 'Video TS'. And within these folders a whole bunch of files my software doesn't recognise...
I have checked the properties of the files and they are IFO, DAT and BUP files....??
    So. what next ??
    Thanks in advance, GW

It would appear that the files are somewhat similar to regular home made DVD's. "This is how I convert my Home Movies that are on DVD"
The files are likely so large because they are in mpeg2 format, mpeg2 is not as efficient as h264, your converted movie will likely be 1/4 of the original size.
May I suggest you consider an eye tv for your computer, they aren't too expensive and you will likely surpass it's cost in a few months with the constant cost of blank DVD's

  • Old Video Material umuxed on DVD studio Pro 4- wierd issues

    Hi,
I am building DVD Studio Projects from old VHS material, which I imported via MPEG Streamclip, to win quite some time (i.e. ENCODING!!)- A Client submitted the video files on a DVD's (used from a DVD/HDD Recorder, from what I could gather from the menu of the DVD's- plain simple Menus with Sony written all over with).
So far so good, I imported the individual video files as seperate m2v and ac3 files, so that I could "re-mux" the video files with DVD studio pro 4 rather easily. All the client wants is a nice menu presentation along with the video files.
Ok, so, I created the menus, and previewed them in DVDSP4, and one thing is striking me- the videos, although old, they have a few "jumpy" sequences in them (with TV snow for a second or so) and when I build & format the project as an imageon my HD, and play the project in the DVD player in OS X, all of the video sequences "freeze" when any kind of video disturbance (in this case the TV snow parts, etc.), but the sound continues, and as soon as the video comes up normally again, the pictures continues in snyc with the audio.
My (rather uncommon) question is- how do I get the DVD Studio Pro 4 Program to ignore those "interferences" and playback the videos smoothly as it has been with MPEG Streamclip? MPEG streamclip has been playing the videos back- including the Video disturbances.
I might be missing something when importing into DVDSP4, but I just can't figure it out...
Thanks in advance for any help!
Feel free to ask questions, I will try to respond ASAP.
    Cheers,
    Dominique

I'm having a similar problem with my menus. They look very jumpy on a tv screen but fine when I play them (as a dvd) on my computer.

  • Mini dvd input?

I know I can import a "mini dvd" video into my pc using my "firewire" port. but what if you only have the mini dvd? can you just pop it into your dvd drive and import it that way? the tray of my dvd drive looks like it will hold such a dvd and of course, dvd's read from the inside so the size of the dvd shouldn't matter. will windows recognize the dvd? I DID try a search on "mini dvd" and got zero hits, has nobody else tried this?
    tnx.

You cannot do a Capture via FireWire, but you should be able to drop the miniDVD into the drawer of your multi-drive. That little recess should fit perfectly.
I would Copy the contents to your HDD, and not Import directly from the miniDVD. The Project Preset should be a DVD/HDD camera. Cannot recall the exact syntax, but that will get your field order correct.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • HP G65 Not booting CD/DVD light flickering

Trying to help family member with a G65, Came to me not booting with Cap Lock flashing and also F12 illuminated. Somehow I got into the HP Tune up and let it run for 4 hours. Solved it all, and I was going to hand it back next day. I opened it up follwing morning and back to square one. Now I can't get it to do anything except blink and I can't count them as it is ongoing with no pause, also F12 is lit again. I did notice that there appears to be continuous activity from the DVD drive. It flickers all the time and there is no disk in it I have checked. None of the F keys do anything as I have tried them all on boot up. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

You do have patience. I am afraid I'm at the bottom of my bag of ideas. Ram,CD/DVD, hdd all eliminated, hard reset performed, BIOS recovery attempted. This is looking more & more like a system board failure.
You could try a new stick of memory, or compatible one from another laptop.Seems odd the F12 is lit up , it is  the wireless adapter indicator. You could remove it on the wild chance....
I did find another thread with a similiar issue, but no resolution there either>> CQ56 Although the BIOS blink codes supposedly offer the problem and resolution it has been my observation that most if not all cases of any sequence of blinks leads to no resolution.

    - P-ata only
    - yes
    - no
    - both
    - s-ata 1st channels
    - PO-3dr/P1-4th
how can I see if exploit well my disks?
    Thanks

I have read that this is th eway to set up your drives . I would have the hard drive with the OS hooked to the optical drive you don't use much. That way you only have one drive (optical or HD) running at a time on each channel. You should also  try a disk benchmark program like ATTO to check your hard drives speeds to see just what is better. download the Applications/Tools/Utilities if I rememder right.

  • Hdd array (x205-sli)

I upgraded my hdd's in my x205-sli-1 from 5400 to 7200's and it appears performance is not better but maybe worse. I was wondering if any of you might know how to properly reinstall the drives or re-configure the hdd's so that they maximize the laptops dual hdd design. I think there are many different ways hdd' scan be configured....... such as master and slave, etc. How do you think toshiba configured these for maximum performance? By the way this model is one of the dual hdd and dual gpu's. I plan to install windows 7 64 bit in a few days. Thanks!
I saw this in a post about performace of this laptop and this guy says something about hdd array:
"I think a very nice plus of the X205-SLI is the 2 disk SATA array that helps to outperform other systems because the average for any single 8600GT is around 2900 3DMarks."

I’m observing similar issue as described above
I have X205-S9359 that is currently unable to boot from any CD/DVD. There is no issue working with HD/DVD in Windows. It reads/writes without any issue. This issue gets observed few months ago. There were no BIOS/firmware/drivers changes during last year.
    Details:
Initial check of available hardware (right after powering device on) is passed without errors, presenting ATAPI Toshiba HD/DVD (as well as HDD’s, CPU, available memory) on display as recognized device. However HD/DVD is not presented in boot selection menu (F12). Boot order of CMOS has LAN, CD/DVD, HDD and FDD options available for selection. FDD is not equipped with my laptop, so whereas I’m able to enable/disable (Shift+1) LAN, HDD (as they are installed in) I’m unable to do this with FDD (error beep occurs without any action performed) which is intended behavior. And currently I’m observing same behavior with CD/DVD as with FDD. Trying enable/disable CD/DVD error beep occurs and no actions performed. It seems that CMOS doesn’t see HD/DVD.
    What has been done:
HD/DVD firmware was updated to the latest version
BIOS was updated to the latest version – issue persists
Disassembled laptop and cleaned up all internal connectors/jacks – issue persists
I was trying to downgrade BIOS however it seems there is no such option. Installer recognizes newer version aborting overwriting. The idea was to downgrade then upgrade BIOS to overwrite it.
I would really appreciate any idea how to proceed further with this brake-fix

    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20100208120847220
    http://www.hardmac.com/news/2008/12/19
    EN:
This solution description is dedicated to all MacBookPro users who have replaced the internal DVD + HDD combination by a SSD + HDD combiation and have run into problems when starting videos from the externally attached DVD. The error message that pops up is something like: "a valid drive could not be found error -70012." / I had that problem with my MacBookPro (Lion installed) and purchased this summer via a local dealer. Maybe they had not correctly rewritten the system file after exchanging the DVD for a SSD. Anyway, rather than waiting hours for support I decided to search the internet and found a possible solution:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20100208120847220
    http://www.hardmac.com/news/2008/12/19
Instead of using a HEX editor tool, however, I used a standard text editor, with "search and replace" functionality. I replaced all "Internal" by "External" and re-saved the file to its original location and protected it again. That worked very well - and now I can view my DVDs on the Mac. The only scary part is that you need to adjust the system file as written in the blog - should that be too scary, then I suggest you to simply contact a local APPLE store, show the solution path ad ask them for support. I am sure they'd help you. The solution worked fine for me, however I can not take any liability for others - therefore, please decide for yourself whether to change the file.
    Best regards - joggingrocket
