DVD I just made in DVDSP plays on set top player, not in my Macs

I just burned a DVD in DVDSP like I've done many times before, but this time the disc won't play on either my G5 or MacBook Pro. It plays just fine in my set top DVD player, though. I don't get any sort of error message, the DVD just won't mount. "Hollywood" DVDs play just fine in both computers, though. I'm using Sony DVD-R 4.7GB discs, which I've always used and have previously worked fine.

check your region on your mac player the first time you open `!!! you might chose a region doesn't match the region you made on your dvdsp project.

Problem: Dual Layer Disc Does not Play in Set Top DVD Player
Solution: If your burner supports having its bitsetting changed, find a utility and change it to include DVD-ROM.
    Additional Information:
DL (Dual Layer) is currently only a +R format. This is a serious problem, as you will find that on older players - and a lot of new ones - there is no +R support. It is not official, and therefore useless for any professional application.
By changing the bitsetting of your burner, it allows DLs (Dual Layer discs) to be burned with a book type of DVD-Rom and thus readable by many more players.
DVD player support drops off exponentially if your burner doesn't support bitsetting, allowing you to change the book type of your disc from DL to DVD-Rom. The DL book type will play on most newer software DVD players but not set top players.
If you've burned a dual layer disc without changing the bitsetting, it is a permanent semi-coaster as it will only play on your computer. I understand that newer DL burners are coming with firmware that automatically sets the book type.
Encore offers no control over book-type. My understanding is that this is a burner-specific parameter: some burners support allow themselves to be set and others do not.
Bitsetting (setting the Book Type) is specific to individual burners. There are some 3rd party software utilities out there that do a good job. The best thing to do is do a Google Search for your specific burner and find what works for yours.
LiteOn has a book type utility available for its DL burners:
I believe DVDInfoPro can set this on burners which support it.
Note: I would caution everyone who updates their firmware to check their bitsetting before burning DL discs. I don't know if it always returns to its default but it did in my case.
Bitsetting is done prior to burning the disk and generally only needs to be set once (unless like me, you update the firmware of your burner). The book type identifies to the player what type of disk is in it. Most players will play DVD-Roms with no problem. However, the book type of a DL disk is DVD+R DL as opposed to DVD-Rom and few players can read that.

Some general comments about the OP's several questions
Remember that reading a burned disc is not part of the original, core specification to play a DVD... so while most players do, now, they are really not required to do so to be able to play a replicated disc
This may (probably is) even more so with dual layer discs... the disc material is different, and a player that will happily read a replicated disc may have problems with a burned disc
There are many messages scattered in the forum, over the past several years, about brands of disc that are better... due both to overall quality control and the type of dye on the disc that is burned by the laser... with the bottom line being that not all discs are going to play in all players with 100% success
As for studio discs... there is software out there that costs many thousands of dollars which do many (up to 9?) encoding passes to get the best, and smallest, possible result to fit more on a disc

  • Audio problem after burned DVD on set top player only?

My burned DVD's play great on any computer PC or MAC but on client's (and mine) set top DVD player the first 3 seconds of the 30-min program don't play any audio???
Client's set top DVD player is brand new and has HDMI out puts, my player is old, 3 years maybe but both players do the exact same thing...the DVD's we're trying to play on the DVD players are all built and burnt from Mac using DVD SP. So the menus all work, even the audio perfectly, but when you choose the program it won't play the audio for 3 sec, then it kicks in, though the video plays perfectly from beginning. I've got 1 sec of Black at the head of program, then it fades up to first shot. I've got that same black slug on both audio tracks for 1 sec as well...tried with and without the black in the audio tracks, no change. Now on a 4 year old Panasonic EM-50 something DVD recorder/player the DVD's did work.
    Thoughts?

    Hi tomwros
Welcome to apple discussions. Sorry to hear you are having problems navigating a burned disc. In most cases on apple discussions it's the result of the media and not of the hardware / software.
Please tell us which brands you have tried. Include speed of the media itself and if it's plus or minus media. Also when you used Roxio Toast, what speed did you burn at within Toast?

  • DVDSP v 1.5 +OS 10.4.9 = DVDs play in a standalone player, not apple player

I recently upgraded my OS to 10.4.9, but my DVDSP is version 1.5. Now it will "build" dvds, but it won't "build and format" (burn) dvds. Does this have something to do with quick time 7?
ALSO: I burned the audio TS and video TS folders to a DVD - and it plays, but only in my stand alone DVD player. When I try to play it on my computer Apple DVD player says disc is not supported. What's going wrong?
I Mac Flat Panel   Mac OS X (10.4.9)
I Mac Flat Panel   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Turthfully I am suprised DVD SP even runs at all on 10.4.9. It stopped being usuable awhile ago in OS terms. Is your iMac also an Intel Machine? If so you would need the Universal Binary
As to getting something to play that works on standalones but not the Apple Player, it is strange. How did you burn it since the Format from DVD SP is not working?

  • Won't read the DVDs I just made.

OK! I know I did something stupid. I needed hard drive space so I burned about 60 gigs to DVDs and then deleted the files from my harddrive.
But now when I put a DVD in. The computer sees the DVD, Adobe Bridge in Photoshop sees all the files, but when I try to open an image it says that it is not a jpeg file that photoshop can open.
    Any ideas?

I have used a version of this software to recover pictures from a corrupted memory card. This one is supposed to be for all forms and not just memory cards. They have a download preview that you can see what they can recover before you ever purchase. I wish every product was like that.

I hope you can recover without purchasing anything but if not I hope this works.

  • Play movies in QT Player, NOT in the browser!

How do I get the QT-movies to play in QT Player instead of the browser? Can I specify this in the HTML-code?
My webhotel is wyning about high bandwith usage. Is there any way to avoid high bandwith usage? I have three QT-movies at 3MB each.
What about a nice JavaScript that pops up the movies in a small window (320x196px)? Anyone know what to do?
    //Joseph

You don't need to use a frame from the movie and any size image will work when your target is the QuickTime Player.
It's only when the target is the browser window that you need to match the dimensions of the linked file (HREF) to the poster movie.
Try this little trick to increase your dimensions without increasing the file size:
Open your target movie using QT Pro. Change the Movie Property dimensions to double size and use Save As.
Name this new doube size file identical to your current version and upload it to the same location. Click OK to replace the older.
You could also use the "Presentation" feature to play it double size.
More bang for your buck and bandwidth use is still very low.

  • SD Set top box not working in one location. Just displays 4 dashes in place of the time.

At first this Motorola STB just had the lower third program info displayed and no video from the channel itself and in place of that was a screen that said "This channel not available" this on all channels; then screen went blank. I tried a working STB from another bedroom in place of this one and it did not work at this location either. So am not sure what is going on. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like a bad cable.  If you have a splitter at the bad location, try removing it.  I would also try the suspect box in the working location to confirm both boxes are good. Then you have to decide if you want to try fixing the cable yourself or pay Verizon to do it.

  • Dvdsp authored dvd really quiet in a Mac only - fine in set-top and pc

i've gotten a test dvd back from the replicator and there's a strange thing happening with the audio: in a set-top player and a PC the audio on the disc is fine; when played in a Mac - I've tried 3 different machines - the audio is so low it's barely audible.  Anyone have this problem in the past or have any suggestions?

I've edited in FCP and exported with compressor with all the appropriate settings, to mpeg 2.
Double check to make sure that you edited in Anamorphic and also encoded as 16:9 video not 4:3 - also make sure you set the Track to 16:9 Letterbox in DVD SP.
What encoding rates did you use for the video and audio? Sometimes if the rates are too high it can cause drifts.
On the audio side, did you export the FCP as self contained and make the audio AC3? Also you can try just exporting the audio as an AIF and encode that as an AC3.
How did you burn the DVD (Speed and Media used?) Sometimes bad burns/media can cause issues.

  • Cannot play DVD on Set-Top Players

First project with DVDSP. Created the DVD and it plays fine on my MAC using Apple DVD player. Won't play on any set-top player, and I've tried 3. Please help.

Bitrate is probably the key factor in authoring DVDs for compatibility with recordable discs on set tops.
For example, if you encode an hour long video at 8 .5 megabits per second, then it is likely that no set top can sustain that throughput.
Bit rate is done in one of two places.
In the preferences section of DVD SP, or using a preset in Compressor.
Without knowing more about your workflow, or whether you have authored previously with success in DVD SP, nor your experience, or how much of the manual and tutorial you have gone through, it's hard to assist.

  • My dvds that are made from iDVD will not play in a standard dvd player. Can anyone help me?*

I am running iDVD v 7.1.2(1158).  I used to be able to make dvds that would play in a standard dvd player.  As of today I cannot.  I do not know what has changed and I do not know what needs to be updated.  Can someone assist me?
The dvds that I can make will play from a disk image and they can play perfectly fine in a computer but not in a standard dvd player.  I am using an external dvd burner, (The same one  have always used) to create the dvds.  I am using iDVD to author them.

    • Material used: Video-Codec and Photo file format and Audio file format - matters too. I use
    - Video - StreamingDV .dv or AIC
    - Photos as .jpg (only)
    - Audio as .aiff 16bit 44.1kHz or 48kHz (ONLY - never .mp3 or directly from iTunes - all converted to .aiff first)
With this I do not mean any setting in iDVD - BUT the raw material used in iMovie / FinalCut / Avid 100 / Adobe Premiere
As this usually matters - later in iDVD
How did You Export from Video-editing program used ? I prefer
    • iMovie HD6 - just drop the movie project icon (NOT iMovie Icon - the PROJECT one) over into iDVD big menu window (avoiding - drop-zones as they are for other tasks)
    • iMovie'08 to '11 - Share to MEDIA BROWSER - AND AS MEDIUM - not HD or other resolution as iDVD does a bad downscaling job.
    • iMovie'13 (version 10.0.x) - Share as 480p - Import this into iDVD
    • FinalCut (Pro or Express) - Export as QuickTime .mov - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - IMPORTANT
    • Adobe Premiere - I don't know - not tested Yet
    • Avid 100 - I don't know - not tested Yet
Cleaning the DVD-burner - If it Burns DVDs OK then that's may be not the problem - But if it only burns CDs OK then either the DVD-burning-laser is dirty or broken.
It is very easy to kill this DVD-laser as it over-heats if one burns several DVDs in a row. I only burn three at a time - then let it cool down for 30 minutes till next batch of three DVDs.

  • Is there a device made that will play dvd's on an iPad?

Is there a device made that will play a standard DVD on an iPad?

You can't connect a DVD player to an iPad - you will either need to sync films from your computer's iTunes (or download them from the store directly on the iPad), or stream them to it (e.g. from a wifi-enabled external drives or from apps/sites that allow streaming)

  • HD DVD's...do they play on the imac?

Apollo 13 just came out in HD, if I stick it in my imac, will it play?

No. The drive is not a Blu-Ray or HD drive. It will read disks that have HD content on them, and the software will decode it and the H.264 content properly, but commercial HD DVDs will not work.
The DVD drive is not HD or Blu-Ray.
Just like you can make a video CD that has DVD material on it, you can make a DVD that has HD content on it. That disk is not a HD DVD however.
That link just gives confirmation that the software prefs can be set for HD content like for HD DVDs made with DVD Studio Pro.

  • DVD won't play back in bluray player

I just created a DVD in DVD SP, about 5 mins long with audio. It plays back beautifully on the computer, but my sony bluray player doesn't recognize it at all. I haven't tried on a standard DVD player, but I don't see how that would help. A previously made DVD plays fine on the player. Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Shelley

    Dear Shawn,
Still no good. In a render last night, weirdly, even in my Mac the disk was unreadable and the warning said it was blank, but I rendered again and it works fine on the Mac. But on my SONY player, nothing.
I changed DVD SP to standard in the Preferences and re-created the project from scratch. I used the DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes setting with no changes. Here is the breakdown:
    Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5
    File Extension: m2v
Estimated size: 2.79 GB/hour of source
    Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
              Usage:SD DVD
    Video Encoder
              Format: M2V
              Width and Height: Automatic
              Pixel aspect ratio: Default
              Crop: None
              Padding: None
              Frame rate: (100% of source)
              Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
              Start timecode from source
              Aspect ratio: Automatic
                        Selected 16:9
              Field dominance: Automatic
              Average bit rate: 6.2 (Mbps)
              2 Pass VBR enabled
                        Maximum bit rate: 7.7 (Mbps)
              High quality
              Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 1/2 second, Structure: IBBP
              DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled
I am at my wits' end. I have two weeks to get this done for a memorial for my late father so you see my desperation.
Do you have any possibilities left? I'd go ahead and sign up for the Pro classes at the Apple Store, but in NYC I'm afraid I wouldn't even get to see anyone in time for FCP and its suite.
    Thank you for any advice.

  • Created a movie in IMOVIE and transferred it to dvd but cannot get it to play on my dvd player.  i downloaded the free Burn program since i don't have idvd on my new mac  the dvd comes up disk error or cannot read

created a movie in IMOVIE and transferred it to dvd but cannot get it to play on my dvd player.  i downloaded the free Burn program since i don't have idvd on my new mac  the dvd comes up disk error or cannot read.  I am using a dvd-r dvd and my dvd player says that it uses this type of dvd.  Any suggestions.  I spoke to an Apple Support person who helped me burn the dvd but it still didn't work...help???

There's a difference between a data DVD, and a DVD-Video.  I believe you made a data DVD, which can't be played in a video player.  The Burn feature of the Finder can't author a DVD-V, just data discs.
I assume you made a Project, and put clips from your Event Library into the Project.  But then, how did you output your Project, using the SHARE menu?
When I pull down iMovie '11s SHARE menu, "iDVD..." is one of the options.  It's the job of iDVD to make the menu that appears when you insert a DVD into your player (that says the title, and chapters, and extras, etc.).  You need software that will made a DVD-V disc.  Lacking that, you might be able to go to Share/Export Movie... or Share/Export using QuickTime... to get your video into a format that software like Roxio's Toast could burn.
