DVD Media for my G4?

Hi,
I'm trying to burn some home movies to DVD...found out the hard way that the spindle of DVD+R's that I had wasn't going to work. I found the one Apple branded DVD-R that came with the computer back in the day (can't believe I still had it 7 years later!), but have a lot more that I need to burn. I want to buy some more discs, but after some googling, I am completely lost as to what to buy. Some of what I've read makes it sound like I should only be buying 2x discs, which seem to be impossible to find...this is an area I know NOTHING about. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
Judy

It's not that I'm having "burning issues" actually the disc I burnt using the 2x Apple blank that I had turned out fine, though it did take a good 3 hours to burn. I am concerned that the 16x blank discs that I have will not work in the 2x drive, or that they will work but will not really be good quality or something. I just discovered last night that 2x media basically doesn't exist anymore:
http://www.appleinsider.com/print/04/07/06/applebails_on_2x_superdrive_mediasupport.html
And the spindle of 16x DVD-R's I have here says on the label:
"Caution: Damage to hardware and media could occur if the disc is used with some 1x/2x DVD-R drives. For optimal performance, check your drive manufacturer's website and apply the latest firmware."
Also if other speed discs have to burn at 1x, that means that each one I burn is going to take 6 hours instead of 3!!
I just don't want to break anything

  • 8x DVD media for MacIntel Mini

I've been searching for affordable 8x DVD media for my MacIntel Mini. A number of first grade brands have only burned at 2x, but I think I've found something which will burn at 8x in the UJ-846 superdrive:
    Japanese-made Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R
    Media Silver Thermal
    Lacquer 50 Pack in Cake
    Box Spindle Premium Line
from Super Media Store dot com
So I don't come off as a total shill, I'll let you do the googling for it
The cost delivered was about 40 cents per disc.
I can't say whether the cheaper bulk-pak versions of this disc will also work, since I have no experience with them.
Hopefully this thread will collect other suggestions for DVD media which burn at 8x in this fussy Superdrive.
    iBook G4 800, 640 Meg, OSX 10.3.9 + MacIntel Mini w Superdrive

NO. I don't want an external drive. I want my SuperDrive be Super as Apple called it.
Experiencing the same problem: it burns, seems well, but do not read dvd when re inserted. No more than 20 discs in 2 years and half.
Seems to me that drives used are too delicate (i had the same kind of problem also with my first iMac DV se graphite and its dvd player)
Regarding compatibility with media issue, it's curious my drive is a Sony and has same problem also on Sony DVD-R ver. 2.
Well, as far as i know, laser temperature is the greatest difference between burning and reading, (much higher in first case); this could motivate the look of well burning and not reading at all, if the lens is simply dirty..
Could be that holes of my ball iMac have been designed for a shower??

  • Best DVD Media for Burning

    Hey guys,
I just bought a new macbook. Any recommendations on a specific brand of dvd I should buy. Please post a link based on your recommendations of the specific product you are referring too. Thanks for your help.

Go to cdfreaks.com "Blank Media" forum and have a read:

Here's a poll for the best DVD+ media:

DVD+R Taiyo Yuden are rated the best for long term storage. With DVD+R Mitsubishi / Verbatim recommended second.
Here' a poll for the best DVD- media for long term storage:

Results are the same as DVD+.
It's a very interesting forum...basically users looking for the perfect burn. I've replaced my old Apple 2X DVD burner in my QuickSilver with a $30.00 LiteON (Sony) 16X burner and flashed it with CD Freaks firmware for perfect and faster burns...or close to it anyway. But you'll need to use Windows machine to update firmware...pain in the butt!

  • Checking DVD Media for flaws

Sometimes, the DVD media is flawed. I've been to http://www.nomorecoasters.com for recommendations about DVD media. I noticed there that Windows "Scan Disc" can apparently be used to check out a blank DVD disc before it is burned to see if it has any flaws. Is there any app that can be used with a Macintosh for this purpose?

I use Verbatim DVD-R 1-8X and none of them have had flaws so far. They cost about $.30 each. No time for me to check for flaws... Bad one? Toss it.

  • Who makes DVD media for Apple?

    Like the title says.
Apple media works very good, but like its RAM, it's expensive.
Any known brand is equal in quality at a better price?
Sorry if this has been discussed too many times before

If you have some, you can check the ID on the media. For a DVD media checker go here: DVD Media Inspector
The site is in Japanese but the download is under the Download heading (search for it) and the application is localized and easy to figure out. Just put in a blank DVD, the code is displayed, then go to this page to find out who the manufacturer is: Video Help DVD Media list

  • DVD Media for DVD+/- RW 16x Double Density?

I've got a eMachine C3070 with a DVD+/- RW 16x Double Density, wondering whats the cheapest media to buy for backup data/music/movies, etc?   I've got a friend that just bought a new pc, needs to dvd's to backup his vista image (system restore cds), so I'm gonna give him a few, too.
Which would you recommend the, for example, the $7.99, 25pack of DVD-R's are those ok?
    crashstar2000

actually Verbatim is still made by Verbatim (Mitsubishi Kagaku) although it is true that more and more is being OEM'd  primarly by MBI and Ritek.   Especially duplication grade.
TDK has not made anything for a long, long time (OK they have a plant for BD-R but that will not last long).   Most of that is made by CMC and Imation (if Imation makes anything anymore,  LOL)
The way to tell is look where it is made.  Verbatim made in Singapore is excellent, Japan, excellent,   India: MBI and Taiwan:  CMC and Ritek .
There was a time when TDK was made in the United States down in Georgia.
Taiyo Yuden is still made by Taiyo Yuden for now.     Stamper codes are not a good indicator of who made them, especially DVD
That is who made the stamper and not who produced the media.  If I'm OEM  I would be using a TDK stamper, or for that matter a Verbatim one, not MBI, Ritek or CMC unless it was their own brand

  • Get DVD media for iWork purchased via serial number download

I purchased online serial number for iWork trial version that shipped with MacBook, in order to upgrade to full version.
Does anyone know if it's possible to get the DVD without paying more than the shipping cost?

I'm not sure what you mean by a new hard drive. Are you replacing the hard drive in the MacBook? And a release date for the next version of OS X has not been announced.
When you insert the restore DVD that came with your MacBook, double-click on the bundled applications icon. You can then selectively choose which applications you want to install & de-select the ones you don't want.

  • I need the dvd media of acrobat 9.0 pro

Hello I have the license, but I do not have the DVD media for acrobat 9.0 pro. I downloaded from Adobe web site but the license did not activated the software. I talk to Adobe and they said I have to get a DVD media otherwise it will not activate with my license. Can someone help me?

You must have an upgrade version in that case. Where is your original download -- or did you throw it away? Throwing it away is like buying software on a DVD, installing it, and tossing the DVD in the trash.
In any case, are you talking about the regular version of AA 9 Pro or an upgrade version? I suspect it is the latter. This difference is important since the regular version can be downloaded from Adobe (for a PC). Also, are you looking for a PC or MAC version. Basically the S/N is tied to the reg/upgrade as well as the MAC/PC aspect. If it is an upgrade, you also need the previous S/N that was used for the upgrade. Sorry, I don't have the upgrade version.

  • Solaris 10 - how to boot from the dvd media

    Hi,
Could any body guide me on how to prepare the dvd media for solaris 10 installation? I downloaded the 5 dvd images and have no idea on how to put them together on a single dvd to boot from it. I zipped all the dvd's and burned them on a dvd but it doesn't boot from the dvd. Any help will be most appreciated. I can't wait to use solaris 10. Thank you.
    OC

That is true, but remember that you are doing this in DOS and the file names and locations have to be right. I put the 5 files into a root directory and just renamed them 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
    copy /b 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 file.iso
file.iso would be the name of the resulting image. You can use anything, i.e., solaris10.iso instead of file.iso if you want.

  • Recovery Media for Tecra R840 - What size USB or DVD?

What size USB (or DVD media) is needed to create the basic recovery media?  I saw the post for the user who also had MS Office 2010, but what size USB (or DVDs) would be needed to create the basic recovery media (ie, without the Office suite) - a search of the manual failed to provide the answer?
    Thanks - FB

I believe the Recovery Media Creator should specify if you continue to go through it.

  • Recommended DVD+R DL Media for MacBook

    Hello all,
I've tried Memorex and TDK DVD+R DL media to burn a large iDVD project, and it tends to fail. Once it kind of worked when I lowered the burn speed to 2x (resulted in a 2.4x burn speed).
I would like to try Sony media or Verbatim....but it so expensive to just "try it out" I wanted some input. My MacBook is the new Santa Rosa, with the drive that is not that Matshuita...it is the other one.
    Thanks

Every time I wind up with a new device I check out Meritline. They generally have a sampler packet of optical discs for sale. (Once I called because I didn't see it online and the salesperson put one together for me.) Anyway, its 2 discs of several different media to test out. Give that a try. BTW, I'm using Verbatim for the 'good stuff' and cheap Ritek DL media for everything else.

  • Anyone recommend reliable DVD-R media for big run?

    Hi All;
I have a couple LARGE jobs coming up in the next few months , 100 disc copies per, and wondering what you all have had good luck with as far as dvd player compatability? (ie returns due to ' skips in my dvd player etc ...') I encode at around 4-5mbs with AC-3 audio... the program is roughly 95 mins on 1 disc.
I have been using Maxell DVD-R's for last few small runs and have had good luck... I have a bunch of Ritek's coming from Ebay to test...
    thanks in advance...

What a GREAT resource for information! Thanks for the post...
We've been in the DVD business for almost 10 years now and in the early days, the only discs we used were Pioneer. Always great luck back then, but then again, discs were $100.00 each when we first started! Hey, the burner was $10K!
Now, we stick with Maxell media. Also great luck. We've used Kodak with only a few bad spindles and I just purchased TDK for the first time. Great price at our local Costco.
Good luck with your project. Buy high quality and pay more, but suffer no headaches in the end.

  • Question on reinstalling DVD media software on a Satellite A100-049

When I first ran the System Restore on my Toshiba laptop it put these two on but I can see no way to reinstall them without restoring the entire drive back to when I first bought it. I still have WinDVD installed but have removed Ulead (I forget the exact name of the DVD Media software) and cannot now re-install it.
Would Toshiba send me a proper installation CD for these?
    Thanks

    Thanks. I was thinking that.
There's nothing wrong with the actual disc as far as I'm aware. There just appears to be no obvious menu when you run it from Windows. It restores perfectly fine. I wasn't sure if Toshiba would send me "normal" CDs for this software. I'm not after anything more than I get anyway.

  • Odd problems with reading DVD media [concluded]

There is an odd problem I've encountered...(I'm not sure if its a bug with Arch Linux or Linux in general).
    Firstly, the details:
    * I've updated the systems (using "extra", "current", and "community" respositories). So its the current one (0.80 "Voodoo"). I'm NOT using "Unstable" respository.
    * I've already added the user to the "optical" and "storage" groups. So there's no problems in relations to permissions.
    * My fstab entries for the CD and DVD drives are default (I didn't touch them)...That is, "iso9660" and "udf" respectively.
    * My desktop environment is KDE 3.5.5...And I have changed the behaviour of the desktop icons such that DVD media, CD media, and USB devices will have an icon pop-up as soon as you plug them in.
    * I have "hal" loaded in the DAEMONS of /etc/rc.conf
    * I'm using 4 different Linux systems with the following DVD burners.
    => Pioneer DVR-108
    => Sony DW-Q120A
    => Hitachi-LG GCC-4240N (DVD-ROM/CD-burner combo)
    * There are three Sempron 2800+ (Socket 754, 1.6Ghz) boxes and the last one is on an IBM R40 ThinkPad, and I know you can't read DVD-R media on that. But it should be able to read DVD+R media without issue.
    * Two of the Semprons are running Arch, as well as the ThinkPad. The final Sempron box is running Ubuntu 6.06.1
    * When I installed K3b I did: pacman -S k3b dvd+rw-tools
    * All the DVD media is Verbatim DataLifePlus ones.
    Here's what I've done...
I've burnt two DVD media (they're just video files from last year's Blender 2006 conference thing, so its legal stuff).
One is a DVD+R and the other is DVD-R media. Both were done on a Windows 2000 Pro SP4 box using Nero 6.6.1.4
    What's the problem?
Well, KDE in the Arch Linux boxes doesn't recognise the media!...There is no DVD icon that automatically pops up on any of the Arch Linux boxes!
When I run dmesg on the Arch boxes, the only relevant info I get is:
ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3
    ISOFS: changing to secondary root
Now if I re-insert these DVD media onto an Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS box...The DVD+R works perfectly! While the DVD-R does not.
When I run dmesg on this box, I get the following:
    [17179654.808000] hdc: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplet e Error }

If I re-burn the data onto a DVD+RW, Arch and Ubuntu immediately sees it, and KDE (or Gnome in Ubuntu), will have a DVD icon popping up! I can view the video clips without issue!
Now here's the really odd part...
When I load up K3b on either Arch OR Ubuntu, they recognise all DVD media! (As in, they can read the media disc information!)...Tools => DiskInfo
If I click on the PIONEER - DVD-RW DVR-108 on the tree menu on the left side in K3b, (to view the contents of the DVD-R or DVD+R media), it can't read and pops up an error message informing about a read problem. It suggests I try dmesg|tail to see what's wrong.
When I do that, I get...
    # dmesg|tail
grow_buffers: requested out-of-range block 18446744073708569376 for device hdc

    UDF-fs: No partition found (1)
I repeat the same procedure on DVD+RW, and it works perfectly!
Should I use another burning application instead of Nero on the Windows box?
Could it be the way I burn things?
(Some DVD+R and DVD-R are burnt with multisession while others aren't.)
Has anyone else experienced similar issues?
What are your "workarounds" or fixes?

    It *should* work...But they don't.
    I tried this...
    mount -t auto /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd
    I get this...
mount: block device /dev/dvd is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/dvd,
    missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
    dmesg | tail or so
    I then do dmesg|tail
grow_buffers: requested out-of-range block 18446744073708569376 for device hdc
    UDF-fs: No partition found (1)
    If I try this...
    mount -t iso9660 /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd
    I get this...
mount: block device /dev/dvd is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/dvd,
    missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
    dmesg | tail or so
    I then do dmesg|tail
    Unable to identify CD-ROM format.
If I stick in a DVD-R that is burnt in one go without multisession, I get this in the dmesg
UDF-fs: Partition marked readonly; forcing readonly mount
    UDF-fs INFO UDF 0.9.8.1 (2004/29/09) Mounting volume 'SW', timestamp 2006/11/07 19:37 (1000)
It reads this disc perfectly and KDE pops up a DVD icon.
I'm scratching my head as I'm not sure what is the problem.
Could it be hal or the way the DVD media was formatted?
