DVD mounting is erratic.

I'll take a DVD and load it into the Mac Pro. It makes a few glitchy sounds but won't mount.  It won't eject either. I restart and the DVD mounts and works. I can eject it and a day later (or sooner) it doesn't mount again.  Any advise?  All software is up-to-date.

I am still working on this.
I had Developer tools installed from 10.5. In 10.6.8 I used CHUD tools to access SpindownHD.app to customize when drives would spin down and sleep. I have removed CHUD tools and SpindownHD thinking this may be partially responsible.
I am not convinced that this was the cause although the issue 'seems' to be resolved.
Today after waking from sleep, I opened the System Report window to check two items, Disk Burning and Serial ATA.
Opening Disk Burning I notice a delay before the window is populated.
The same delay occurs for Serial ATA.
When I had the problem of the Superdrive not being recognized,  the System Report pane for Disc Burning would never populate (I have drives in both bays).
I am going to let the machine sleep for several hours, wake, open the System report, but not access the Disc burning window, and see if I can duplicate the problem.
I am beginning to wonder if this is an energy saver issue.
I will post my findings.

  • Can't get dvd mounted anymore

    Hello,
I mount my dvd like this:
    mount -t udf /dev/sr0 /mnt/dvd
But now archlinux is bitchin' about the fact that the udf filesystem doesn't exists....
And when I do auto insteed of udf than it says mount: unknown filesystem type 'iso9660'
    What did I do wrong?
THe only thing I did today was pacman -Syu
Long time ago I updated my system so it was 200mb of updates. And also kernel updates. Could that did something fuck up?

  • DVD mounting issue with new Pirates of Caribbean: at world's end DVD!

So I just picked up the new Pirates of Caribbean: at world's end DVD and was going to watch it on my MacBook (see specs below). and the DVD went in, the drive spun up a few times then ejected the disk. What's up? no error message or nothing. The Disney DVD support page says: "+If you have problems loading a DVD on a Mac, hold down the Command, Option, and I keys when inserting the disc. (This mounts the disc using ISO 9660 instead of UDF.)+" This must just be a Mac OS 9 shortcut (in OS X it just launches a "get info" box - same as Command i). It also says I might not have updated drivers, etc. But can it really be a driver issue?
any thoughts? ideas? help out there?
    Thanks!

I think it's the disk. The fact that there are instructions regarding mounting issues specific to macs would tell me that they have had in the past problem complaints. Try it in your dvd player on your TV. Get another copy from the store and also get a copy of something else not Disney to see if that plays.

  • Menu bar icons intermittent (no clock) when DVD mounted from USB (external)

When one uses external USB DVD player the icons in menu bar start to show up intermittently and they cannot be used. Additionally, clock icon disappears permanently (you do not see time anymore).
I wonder what is the justification behind this behavior and what it means. Any ideas? How to make it behave stable so icons are there all the time and they can be used? Do I miss part of new functionality that I should learn?
I believe that started in Leopard. Is this that bad with Leopard or with me? Honestly stacks are less useful to me than clock that shows up on menu bar all the time or ability to switch to another account using one of those icons.
    Thanks,
    Maciek

I opened case with Apple some time ago for this (before release 10.5.1) However it was resolved with yesterdays release of Leopard 10.5.2.
Thank you Apple for listening! I can now mount my other region cult movies to extrnal region free USB player and play them in the USA without seeing flickering icons that were disabled at that point.

  • Strange DVD Mounting Issue

I am still able to burn DVD-R media, through Backup 3.1 and several other software packages that automatically recognize a disc in the drive and burn it. I cannot however see the blank disc on my desktop and create a burn folder to burn a disc manually. It appears in the Disk Utility, but I am unable to "mount" it and it claims the disc is locked and can't be written to. I should still be able to see it on my desktop, no? It is possible this started after the latest system update that I just installed. Any advice on this?
    Thanks.

  • DVD Player & Quicktime erratic playback

My first edition Mac Mini's playback of DVDs and also video files with Quicktime & VLC Player has been incredibly erratic lately.
For example, DVDs being played with DVD player will suddenly rewind back to the start, skip to other chapters, forward when I try to pause, go back to the menu and highlight other items, all at random points of the disc.
I thought this was due to either the disc being scratched (I clean them regularly), or the optical drive being very dirty (I admit it needs a good clean).
However, the same issue occured when playing Quicktime movie files in Quicktime. A video file would just rewind at random points, or "stutter".
This also occured in VLC Player.
The only way to avoid this occuring was to click on the menu bar, or with a wired PC mouse to "right click" and leave it.
    Why would this be occuring?
I recently updated the operating system to the latest version (cannot recall what it is, so I just entered iOS6- and will update later).
I also changed the batteries in the keyboard twice.
I do admit the keyboard could also do with a clean, but I don't believe the rewind function key and other keys are stuck.
Please help me with this. I have actually lost a lot of sleep over it. It's like it is possessed!

I have the same issue fairly regularly with DVDs when played back using the Apple DVD Player app.  The same DVDs work fine with VLC.
While rebooting helps, it doesn't actually fix anything.  The same goes for resetting PRAM and other stuff.  The problem persists, albeit intermittently.  I've rebooted and have had a DVD exhibit the same exact problems right away.  And then I try VLC and it runs fine.
There are three variables that I can point to...
Apple DVD Player application... as noted above, the issue does not occur at all with VLC
Memory... it's possible that the Apple DVD Player app hits on a bad stretch of memory, it causes this kind of problem.  Still this points to the application as the issue does not occur in other playback apps.
Video Card...  on my macbook pro it's the NVIDIA 320M.  Again, the playback is fine in other playback apps, so this still points back to the Apple DVD Player app, but it's possible that it has issues with the video card
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.  I hope Apple will fix the problem, and I'm OK with using VLC until it gets fixed, but there is at least one feature of Apple's DVD Player app that I love...  it remembers exactly where I was at even if I take the DVD out to play something else.  VLC Player does not appear to have that functionality (at least not that I've found thus far).

  • Cd/dvd mounting in gnome

My cd/dvd drive in my laptop is not mounting anymore when I put in disks. I can mount them from command line, but they use to automount. I am using gnome.
    I have a dell laptop vostro 1500
    I am running Arch64
    my drive is
    /dev/sr0
    my fstab lines are:
    /dev/cdrom /media/cd iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/dvd /media/dvd udf ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
I have hal and fam in my daemons array in rc.conf.
I have never had this problem.
I also thought that I should mention that I have tried change /dev/cdrom to /dev/sr0 and that didn't work.

    Didn't work for me.
I found out that Arch is able to mount my CDs automatically when they are inserted during booting. It doesn't matter if there is a entry in fstab or not.

  • DVD Mount Disaster... my mini doesn't mount either

New mini, used to do DVD's fine. I think maybe the upgrade to 10.5.5. did it? Something did. It's only 2 months old. Glad to see its software and not my drive. I can load it in, it recognizes that a disc is in the drive. Disk Util will show the DVD title, so I know its reading the drive. Just no MOUNT!

    See this troubleshooting article.
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" error syncing iPod in iTunes.

  • Drive rejects DVDs, mounts CDs normally

When i put a DVD in the drive, it clicks softly (normal sounds) for maybe 30 seconds (abnormally long), then ejects without mounting or opening the DVD. If i insert an audio CD, it works normally.
Any chance there would be a fix for this without having to send it in for repair?
It's a MatashitaDVD-R UJ-845E. I searched for firmware updates to no avail. It has firmware revision DMP2
Does this sound like logic board, or just the DVD drive?
I'm worried because the computer is fairly new (1/06 purchased), still under warranty, plus has AppleCare, but it fell several months ago off the arm of a chair, and has slight dent on both the lid and base in the catch area. I'm afraid it will void my warranty. I guess i'll find out soon, unless there is some fix for this i can do at home that i don't know about.
If anyone has any ideas, i would sure appreciate hearing them.

Apple repaired the drive under AppleCare Protection

  • DVD mounting problem...

So, I was watching a DVD today on my Mac Pro...like i've done many times before. I eject one DVD to put in another and the disc doesn't mount. It spins..then sounds like a printer...then sounds like a click...click...click...and repeats spinning and "printing" for 5 min or more until it finally spits the disc out. I put in the DVD i was watching earlier and it did the same thing!!! What's going on?
I've played both DVD's before on the machine just fine.

If you're one of the unfortunate people to have a Sony drive then you may have the same problem as I had. If you go to System Preferences and click on CDs & DVDs and change the "When you insert a blank DVD" to "Open Finder" it may fix the problem.
If it doesn't, I'm not sure myself. I'm having major problems with my Sony drive writing double layer discs and also reading standard discs that read fine on my MacBook Pro. I've just had to buy a Pioneer drive to replace it because I'm sick of it now.

Thanks for the quick responses. I've tried...

    /dev/sr1 /media/dvd1 iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0

  • Mounting a dvd on Solaris 10

I am a linux user, not a Solaris user and I am running solaris 10 on a Blade 100. I want to mount a dvd but am unsure of how to mount it because of the difference between Solaris and Linux command lines. "mount cdrom" does not work. I am sure this is an easy answer to this question but I can't seem to get this DVD mounted.
    Thanks,
    Michael

Unless you've changed the system's configuration, mounting
CD/DVD media is supposed to happen automatically, with the
    help of the "vold" daemon.
The CD/DVD will be mounted somewhere in /cdrom/xxxx with a
symbolic link /cdrom/cdrom0 pointing to the root directory of the
    media.
If you've disabled "vold", of if you didn't install it, manual mounting
    works like this:
    1. iostat -En
This command can be used to print a list of SCSI/ATAPI/USB/
Firewire disk/cdrom/dvdrom devices. Note the disk id in front
of the entry, for example "c1t1d0":
    % iostat -En
c1t1d0           Soft Errors: 1 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: HL-DT-ST Product: DVDRAM GMA-4020B Revision: A105 Serial No:
    Size: 0.00GB <0 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 0 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 1 Predictive Failure Analysis: 02. Manually mount the device, using the device id from the above
iostat command, with slice "s2" appended (on Solaris x86:
    append "p0").
    # mount -F hsfs /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s2 /mnt

  • Installing on Dell Latitude D420 - mount external DVD player

when i choose No 2 'Select Packages' from the setup menu i try choosing 'mount the cd-rom and install from there'. But i get 'no cd drives were found'. I understand that my cd/dvd drive isn't mounted, but i can't find out how to mount it. I thought it was mounted since i managed to boot from it...
    Suggestions?

Thanks for the reply! I have downloaded his base iso, and the external dvd mounted.
So far i've installed the base packages successfully. I'll continue when i get home from work.

  • Unable to mount dvd's (no medium found)

I have a dual layer DVD-ROM in my laptop (dvd/cd-rom combo).
When I try to mount a DVD:
    mount -t udf /dev/hdc dvd
    I get the following error:
    mount: No Medium Found
I'm sure /dev/hdc is the dvd-rom device, at least that's what dmesg says:
    hdc: QSI DVD+/-RW SDW-082, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
    hdc: ATAPI 24X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33)
I've looked into several threads about the same issue, but none of the solutions worked. Funny thing, I can mount normal cds...

I did a search, and apparenty your drive can be problematic, so you're not the only one .  I googled around, and they recommend you upgrade the firmware to LX43, which is here: http://mega.ist.utl.pt/~cfao/QSI-SDW-082-LX43.zip
Give that a whirl and see if it helps.

  • WARNING!  MEMOREX DVD-R keeps ejecting/won't mount

    Ok..so I have an eMac (2004)
    SuperDrive PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D
CDs & DVDs with data AND DVDs burned for DVD players DO MOUNT.
Then a DVD from Netflix loaded..so everything seems to work except DVDs burned to MEMOREX DVD-R.
A friend converted VHS stuff for me to DVD from a Panasonic VHS to DVD converter. Some DVDs mounted. The MEMOREX media he used did not. They do not want to mount.
So I will be testing other media again from this converter..But we have seem to have found a problem with MEMOREX media. (recordable 16x 4.7GB)
Also tried resetting the PRAM and looked all over for issues with my Pioneer SuperDrive. Found nothing
eMac Mac OS X (10.3.9) also have an iBook G4, G5 dual,

Memorex Media is Fair at best. Some of the older Optical Drives do not expieriance the problems that the newer drives have.
When you are burning be sure you friend has his settings correct for Mac and PC compatiblity.
Here is a Media quide to use when purchasing.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Next be sure if you are using the newer high speed media that you read the back of the packaging and the media will burn at the lower speeds . It will read that this media will burn at 1X, 2X, 4X, 8X, and 16X. so no matter the drive you have it will burn this media.
Also, as you already know stick with DVD-R Media it is the most widely recognised and used, for computers and players alike.
