DVD Navigation Woes - Advice Needed

Hi
I'm working on an education DVD with multiple sections. Within each section, there may be, for example, a video sequence, then an interactive element implemented as a menu (multi-choice questions etc.), followed by more video.
At present, this is implemented as a track with a marker in the middle that jumps to a menu and then a button ("Done") on the menu that jumps back to the marker on the track.
The problem with this set-up is that it wrecks havock with end-user navigation. The user expects the sequence to 'flow' as a continous piece and expects that when the hit 'back' or 'next' on their remote, that the will follow the sequence through.
Of course, that does not happen. Because there is a jump away to a menu, it's ignored when the user uses the remote to navigate. Or when on the interactive menu, back and forward buittons have no effect.
Can anyone propose a solution that will allow me include interactive menu items in video material and make this as transparent as posible to end users?
Many thanks for any advise posited.
Peter

Welcome to the boards
What you can try is buttons over video with a pause...in other words the video will play then come to a section that looks like a menu (but is effectively a still) where you can make multiple choice selections, when the selection is made it continues from there

Which is a quick rough of the idea, and some tweaks can be added

  • Advice needed on buying iphone as gift

I went to apple store, they do not want to sell iphone to me unless I sign AT&T 2 years plan. I thought AT&T has locked the phone and users must subscribe in order to use it. Why Apple store still not allow me to buy?
Please advice, if I want to buy online iphone for my brother, do I or my brother have obligation to sign out AT&T plan?
One more advice needed, I found the shipment takes weeks, do I have option to arrange for self-collection?
My brother birthday is coming soon, I need above advice urgently.
    Thank you very much

I'm guessing English is not your first language. It's possible that you misunderstood them. Apple Store employees won't refuse to sell you an iPhone and you don't have to sign up for service in the store.
    Well that's not entirely true.
Apple Stores have been instructed not to sell you an iPhone if any of the following is true:
    • You state that you will not be signing up with AT&T.
    • You do not have an ID from a US state, also indicating you will not be activating with AT&T
    • You do not have a credit card
For example, I've seen US Apple Store managers refuse to sell iPhones to European residents because of the AT&T lock-in.

  • Video intensive work on Mac Pro? Advice Needed

    Hi everyone,
I've been originally saving up for a while now for an iMac 24" as it offers the best specification price wise. But now I leaning on the Mac Pro and therefore need some advice.
I know that there are alot of posts on advice - need to buy mac etc. so therfore I would really appreciate if I am afforded some help.
I am mostly going to do ALOT of video encoding (via handbrake) and I am looking for the best configuration available to achieve lowest waiting time.

I think you should go back and look at the other threads with advice, your budget. There is "ideal" and "affordable."
Will it pay for itself in 24 months so you can afford the next revision at that time?
    Start with an 8-Core 3GHz.
Add a Port Multiplier controller and two drive cases, 5 drives each, nearly 400MB/sec RAID.
    Throw in 8GB RAM.
Add in costs for software upgrades, two sets of backups, four internal 500GB drives.
Seagate has 750GB, as does WD. Hitachi has their $450 1000GB monster.
Give yourself time to build, test, and optimize your setup, and expect to change it over time as you learn more.
Can't afford that? then trim the 8-core. But Apple has shown how efficient next generation applications already are for video when it comes to 3GHz 8-core Mac Pro.

  • 2.1.2 update does not fix DVD Navigation issues :(

The FrontRow 2.1.2 update still doesn't fix the DVD navigation issues where sub menus on MANY DVDs are not navigable. Using the up / down keys on the keyboard or remote causes the Volume to change and not navigating the menus like it is supposed to.
This is a severe issue as it makes it impossible to play some DVDs or turn on the subtitles.

Yeah, I have experienced this as well. Ridiculous -- how could this issue not have come up in product testing by the time the software has reached version 2.0? The solution on Apple's end should be obvious. All 4 directional buttons must act only as directional commands when using a DVD, and all other functions (such as volume) can only be accessible by hitting MENU first to bring up a list of other options.
I'm all for simplicity, but this is the fault of the boneheaded 6-button Apple Remote. It requires their software to overload buttons with different commands depending on context, which is clearly an unacceptable limitation. They'll have to break down and roll out a proper remote with more discrete buttons one of these days and come to terms with the fact that shoehorning everything onto 6 buttons is not an elegant solution.

    Hi
That screen grab helps a lot. There’s a much easier way of doing what you’re doing.
Remove all your tabs and set the text in justified paragraphs.
I’ve typed in dummy text in the example I made below, but after “19.1” put in a space and put your blinking cursor after the space and before the ’N’ of ‘Notices'.
Then hold down the Command key and hit Backspace (on Mac at least - it’s the key between the Inverted commas/ apostrophe key and the return key).
The text will jump into place the way you want it to.
    Hope that helps
    Paul
PS You can set a tab, instead of using a space, in the description I gave above. So, after 19.1 or 19.2 or 19.185 etc etc insert a tab, then hit the Command Backspace after every paragraph number and they'll all line up exactly together. You'll find that editing text within the paragraphs
after you've set it will be LOADS easier this way.
You can put the tab anywhere you want it to be using 'Command-ShiftT' and putting a 'left align' tab just after the number. Just type the Command Backspace after the paragraph number and it'll work

  • I can't find my Install DVD.  Do I need it for when i do a Hard Drive upgrade?

I'm trying a DYI project.  I can't find my Install CD (or DVD).  Will i need it after installing a larger Hard Drive?  I have my computer backed up to Time Machine.

Only if you want to install a fresh system. If your current setup is ok and fine with you, can save a lot of time and having to pay for an installer replacement by cloning your current boot volume onto the new and bigger drive.
You will need to get an external case. Quickest is Firewire, USB can do with a bit more time.
Install the new drive in the case, connect to Mac. Use Disk Utility to repartition it to GUID scheme and reformat to Apple Extended (Journaled) format. It will probably come as MBR/NTFS for use in Windoze. Then use Disk Utility's Restore tab to "restore" the internal Macintosh HD volume onto the external blank disk. Test that all is well by booting it up (press Option prior to the startup chime). If all is well exchange the drives and be happy.

  • Advice Needed Using GPRM Registers For a Quiz/Testing DVD

I have a customer that wants a DVD that will play several instructional videos and after each video jump to a Q & A.  That part is easy enough.  The trick is:
He also wants to track of number of right and wrong responses during the Q & A.  My thought is to use GPRM registers to keep a tally.  I could use a bit schema to track which answers were correct ( ie 1010 binary would mean, from right to left, 1st & 3rd answers were wrong, 2nd & 4th were correct).  I could track up to 16 questions per GPRM register.
At the end of the quiz, he wants to display the results of the tally in the GPRM registers.  Ideally, the DVD would display a generated number that would be written down by the student, and given to the tester, who would have a key for what questions were answered correctly.   ie the displayed number to the previous example would be "10" (decimal value for binary "1010" ).
I know I can have a DVD jump to a specific screen based on what is in a register, but that would mean having to generate a result screen for EVERY possible combination of right and wrong answers.
So, my question is, can I dynamically generate something like an "overlay" to display the GPRM contents?
Alternatively, is it possible to generate a URL that would have the GPRM contents imbedded, and passed to DVD@access?  A dedicated page would be displayed and the student would print the page to give to the tester, or possibly have the information entered directly into a database.
The desire of the tester is to prevent cheating by the student, and for the tester to have a reasonably accurate idea of where the student needs to focus his/her studies.  Since I could not find anything every remotely similar to this project in the forum, I am hoping to glean some advice from the pros here.
If I am heading in entirely the wrong direction, PLEASE let me know.  Any advise on the proper approach to this project would be GREATLY appreciated.
I have projected about 16 man hours to complete this project - 5 videos and about 80 questions.  As long as the scripting is as straight forward as I think it is, is this a reasonable expectation?
TIA for any advice and suggestions.
    [NOTE: Cross posted at lafcpug }

    Thanks, Shawn.
All that being said, the best solution would be to not create a DVD. This sort of project would be much easier, and give you better results if you did this in Flash. The only reason I could see to use a DVD would be if the testers only had access to a DVD player and not a computer.
That was exactly my sugestion as well.  But the client is quite insistent on creating the project as a DVD - yes the DVD Player uption is a requirement.
I have created DVD with several thousand links... very daunting, but turned out well and the customer was very happy.
I reviewed the DVDSP manual to make sure what the customer wanted was not covered, but I wanted to make sure.
What I have suggested is that when I student gets an answer wrong that an option is given to review the relavent section.  Since there will be less that 100 question, it would not be a big deal to created an appropriate final score bases on a GPRM value.
Thank you very much for the rreply.  It is greatly apprecaited.

  • AVCHD Camcorder to DVD Advice Needed - Am I Doing This Right?

    Hi All,
I have a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB memory. I also have a Canon HG10 AVCHD Camcorder. I took a total of 2.5 hours of video footage.
    1. I attached the camcorder to my computer via USB and downloaded the movie off of my camcorder onto my laptop - this took about 2.5 hours to do.
    2. Then I wanted to make a DVD out of the footage and created a DVD in iDVD. I loaded the movie from iMovie and created a DVD - this took about 5 hours.
    3. Then I burned the first DVD - this took over 2 hours.
    4. I burned additional DVDs as gifts - and each of these took about 19 minutes.
My questions are: Am I doing this correctly? Does one 2.5 hours of filming really need to take so long to decompress or whatever it is doing? Would I have been better off using iMovieHD? I'm sorry to sound so stupid, but I am very new to camcorders and iMovie/iDVD. Many thanks for your help and understanding.

Let me see if I can describe it easier
Step 1 - transferred 2.5 hours of video footage from my Canon HG10 to my MacBook Pro (took about 2.5 hours to do) this was put into iMovie '08 with no problem
Step 2 - I created a DVD in iDVD with 1 song out of iTunes as the Main Screen of the DVD, created 1 chapter for the Movie itself, and 1 Slideshow of pictures with 1 song from iTunes. I then pressed burn DVD - which it took over 5 hours to burn the first DVD
Step 3 - additional DVDs took 19 minutes to burn after the first one.
I hope this helps. I might of messed up on my first post. Thanks!

  • Considering navigating away from DEs. Advice needed.

I got a new netbook (an Asus 1001p) which I am taking with me while I go travelling throughout Europe this spring.  There is one problem, I absolutely hate the netbook interfaces for both KDE and GNOME. I also find them sluggish.  Consequently, I am thinking about switching to some sort of WM based setup, possibly a tiling one as my experience with KDE4 on my main computer has shown me that I prefer to do most of my window management via the keyboard.  But before I begin working on my setup for my new netbook I need some advice.
Firstly, what do you non-DE people use for power management?  I really like all the options that power management system for KDE provides (i.e. specific power profiles and such).  Is there a program not associated with a DE that I can use to accomplish this?
Secondly, what tiling window manager is easiest to setup and use?  I am considering going for wmii, as I like that it can be switched between tiling, floating, and dynamic tiling.  It also doesn't require the use of LUA to configure it like awesome does, which is good because I am not a programmer (I've always struggled a little bit with computer science).  Also, I only have about a week to get the setup up and running, as I refuse to spend my vacation reading documentation.
Thirdly, should I just abandon the idea of using a tiling WM and go for fluxbox, or use a lightweight DE like xfce?
How do you advise I proceed?
    Thanks!

I am using Musca as my WM on an Eee PC 1005hab, it is very simple, no more options that neccesary, and nothing done automatically for you. I have customized my keybindings for it and my main browser (uzbl) to make all my window management actions sensible in their layout.
I haven't felt the need to use any power management apps yet, I just us sudo pm-suspend when i want to suspend, but my netbook stays plugged in next to my bed all night, and rarely sits around long enough to need anything like auto-suspend or anything. I haven't really installed any applications that do things for me automatically, I don't even start many daemons at start-up, I connect my wifi manually everytime. I am liking the DIY approach.
I would reccomend Musca only if you want to manage every window action. It is much easier for me to understand than a dynamic tiling system, but also takes a bit more effort.
