DVD not playing in newer DVD player

Here's what I'm using:
PowerBook G4 with a combo drive
OS X 10.3.9
External Lacie 16x DVD Firewire 2.0 d2 drive
Toast Lite (came with DVD burner)
iMovie 5 and iDVD 5
Using Sony brand DVD-R disks
I created 2 movies in iMovie and imported them into iDVD. I used one of the motion menus available in iDVD5. When I was finished with my project, I saved a disk image to my desktop. I mounted the image to my desktop.
Toast Lite has 4 options - Data, Audio, Video or Copy.
I selected Data (I will explain why Data in a moment) and burned the mounted disk image. The DVD WILL play on my Mac, on a PC, on my TV DVD player (RCA brand) but it will NOT play on my bosses "very high tech, Sony Dream Machine" DVD player that is only 2 years old.
Now, I know everyone is going to tell me I should have selected Video in Toast Lite, but it doesn't work. If I select Video I receive error messages saying it can't read the files. According to Lacie's message boards - once you have made a "Disk Image" and mounted it, all the video encoding has already taken place, therefore Data should be selected in Toast Lite.
I've read in many places on these boards that the type of media used could be the problem. But I would think that a Sony Disk would work in a Sony machine.
Anyone have any ideas?
I'm ready to beat my head against a wall.

Disk Utility works fine with my external LaCie drive. I have encoded several projects in iDVD as disc images and then burned them to DVDs. However, I use Toast primarily and have used Toast 5, 6 and 7 over the past 2 years. In Toast, select the copy option. Select the tab that gives you the expaned options and select disc image. Then simply drag your disc image into the Toast window. I have experienced no problems playing any of the DVDs in my home machines.

  • Why does my Encore DVD not play in Windows Media Player v.11

My DVD's play properly in players and from various other DVD Software but not Windows Media Player v.11.  Most people I give my DVD's to view them on business computers, that only have WMP on them.  Is there a way to build an Encore DVD that will allow them to play in WMP?

You can always build a Flash "DVD". Other than that you may be looking in the wrong place. Microsoft has neatly avoided any MPEG-2/DVD licensing and merely uses the respective libraries of otehr DVD software on your system, so when no such thing is installed, it never works.

  • Old movie will not play in new shockwave player

Hi, I have searched the forums, Adobe support and web in
general for help on this, but to my surprise have not found
anything. I created some Shockwave movies perhaps 5 years ago for
science education and have not used Director since then. I just
received a report that the movies are broken and will not play.
This is happening on WinXP in IE and in Firefox with the latest
Shockwave player installed, but the movies work fine on OSX 10.4.8
in Safari and Firefox, also with the latest Shockwave player
installed. I am not a Director developer anymore and do not own a
current version of the program, I am primarily a scientist and
educator. I'm hoping the problem is in the code that embeds the
movie, and that the movies are still compatible with the new
Shockwave player on Windows. Can anyone help out, please? One of
the movies can be found at

  • DVD is not playing in my DVD player!

I made a movie in iMovie HD, created a DVD in iDVD, burned it successfully, and now that I try to play it on my DVD player, it is choppy and basically freezes and says "disk error". I can see the title pages and everything looks good, so I'm not sure what's going on. I took it to work and it only played on an old DVD player in someone's office, but not on my computer DVD player, not in other, newer DVD players. I burned the movie on a Maxell DVD-R, which I thought was a good brand. Do you think it has to do with burning speed? As I'm not sure what speed I set the burn for. It does play, however, on the apple DVD Player on my mac, so I know it works at least somewhere! The problem is that I gave this DVD to the bride (I edited her wedding) and she was unable to play it at her home. Any ideas????

    Hi
I burn my DVDs at an as slow speed possibly. This can be set in iDVD08 or by creating
a DiskImage and use Disk Util tool or Roxio Toast™ to burn where speed can be
    set down to x1
Speed is set by the no. on the DVD bought eg x16 and max speed on DVD-burner eg x8
in previous versions of iDVD. So forcing iDVD up to version 6, one has to buy x2 DVDs.
No other way possibly else using another program to do the actual burning.
    I only use Verbatim DVDs
    Only DVD-R (Single Layer)
Read this on iDVD quality = Result
    *DVD quality*
    1. iDVD 8 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    2. From
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on:
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS: They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD08
    Pro Quality (only in iDVD08)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD08
    2. Project info: Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD08.
    Region codes:
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes:
    1 = US
    2 = EU

  • My disk drive does not play any original dvd or cd anymore, but the copies work fine, no matter which format. Do I need a new disk drive?

    Hello All,
since last week my disk drive does not play any original DVD or CD anymore, but copied ones, no matter which format work fine. I am a bit confused that the copied ones still work.
Anybody experienced the same? Will I have to get a new disk drive? Unfortunately the warranty expired last month
Looking forward to your answers and thanks,
    Yvonne

An external DVD drive from http://www.macsales.com/ may solve your problems.

  • I've burnt a slideshow of my photos onto a DVD disc but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays ok on my acer laptop. I burnt the same disc with slideshow from my old dell computer

I've burnt a slideshow of my photos on my Apple Mac to a DVD+REW disc but it will not play on my DVD player or on a combined DVD/TV. However it will play on my wife's Acer laptop. I then erased the disc & burned another slideshow from my ancient Dell computer onto the same disc &it played just fine on everything. So it seems the problem ids somewhere in the Apple Mac process. Any ideas?

If you want to play material on a dedicated DVD Video hardware player, you must create a DVD video disc, and you must use a DVD authoring application. The software creates files that the DVD video player can play and will burn them to a recordable DVD disc. Examples of applications are:
Roxio Toast and iSky DVD Creator
Mac's used to be supplied with iDVD authoring software but Apple discontinued it in 2011.
Thanks for that.  Will need to check iSkysoft out.  I am in the process of looking for a VisualHub replacement/backup.  Especially when it comes to ease of use.  Toast is ok.  Just looking for something along the lines of VH.

  • I made a movie on iMovie and went to burn to DVD and of course I could not...contacted Apple and they said to download an app to help solve this problem...i did..so I could finally burn a DVD, but it will not play on my DVD player...HELP!!!

This is a known issue.  It really comes down to two key factors - what type of DVD are you burning to + what type of DVD player you have.
This article will help.  It's lengthy and can be technical in some parts but should shed some light on your problem.

  • I transferred photos from my camera to my computer and created a burn folder.  I recorded the burn folder on a DVD but it will not play on my DVD player.  What am I doing wrong?

I transferred photos from my camera to  burn folder on my macbook Pro.  Made a DVD from the burn folder but it will not play on my DVD player.  What am I doing wrong?

How did you do this burn? Did you use a program like iDVD?  A DVD player requires that the data on the DVD is recorded in the proper format: MPEG-2.  A program like iDVD will do this.  There are other programs available that can do the proper coding (Roxio 'Toast' for example), but iDVD has the most features and is easy to use.  It is no longer available from Apple, but if you search on Amazon, you can find 'iLife 11', a suite of programs including iDVD.  It will function properly on Apple's current operating system, but it cannot make a High-Definition (Blue-Ray) presentation.  It is Standard Definition only, as are all regular DVD's. One good way to present photos on a TV is to make a slidesow in iPhoto, then export that slideshow to iDVD, where it will be properly formatted for a DVD player.  Or, iDVD can make its own slideshow of up to 99 photos.  HTH.

  • Why doesn't my slideshow burned to disc not play on my dvd player or game devices?

Why doesn't my slideshow burned to disc not play on my dvd player or game devices?  I've created the slideshow using my Mac on OS X 10.6.8 & burned to both a CD-R & DVD disc.  The disc does work on my computer; however will not play on my dvd player, projectors or gaming devices.

Did you use iDVD to create a video DVD or did you burn a Quicktime file version of your slideshow to a DVD disk via the Finder thus creating just a data disk?
If you didn't use iDVD then that's the reason the disk won't play on those other devices.

I have downloaded a movie which has the extension .m4v.  This will not play on my DVD player and I can't find software to convert it to a more universal format.  Can anyone help?

If you've bought a film from iTunes then you can only copy it to a DVD or CD for backup purposes, you won't be able to watch it on a stand-alone DVD player.

  • Burned a dvd but, it will not play on my dvd player for tv

I created a slideshow with itunes music added in iphoto.  I tried the recommended free "burn for mac" software download.  It burned a dvd but, this will not play on my dvd player for tv.  What software title can i purchase that will burn my iphoto slideshow to a dvd that will play on typical home dvd player for tv AND on a windows pc?

some dvd players are very picky on what they will play some only
    play dvd+r some only dvd-r some can't play dvd+rw and or dvd-rw
dvd burnable is a pretty fragmented std.

  • My Macbook Pro will not play a Disney DVD (Howl's Moving Castle). It says supported disc not available but it plays on my cousin's Macbook Pro.

Basically my macbook pro will not play this one DVD. It is a dvd that is fresh out of the package that I order from amazon and it is the second dvd that I have tried. Amazon sent me a new dvd when there were problems but both are not working but my laptop will play all other dvds, including the bonus dvd that came with the dvd i am trying to watch. I tried playing the dvd in my cousin's macbook pro and it worked. I already repaired discs permissions and restarted my computer but i cannot get this dvd to play for the life of me. When I put it in the disc drive the laptop buzzes for a few seconds then spits it out. When I open dvd player before hand and hit play it gives the message "supported disc is not available"

The laptop is about 2 years old, and I watch a lot of movies on it. I would think I had set the region but I could be wrong. I'm in North America wouldn't that be the preset? Also, how would you go about changing or double checking that. Also if a movie was from a collaboration of disney and studio ghibli (japanese studio) would that mean I have to change the region just for that one movie? It would be weird if it were that way because I have another movie by disney and studio ghibli, and it plays, for that matter so does the bonus feature disc that came with this movie....
