Dvd not reading burned dvds

I am having problems reading DVDs that I burn on my Mac Pro 5,1. I can burn a DVD, eject and then reinsert and it may not load. I can take it to another Mac and it will load without a problem. I've tried to do some research without much luck. Most posts online are for Macbook with slot drive. I work in a printshop and there is a lot of printing dust so I'm thinking maybe the lens is dirty, how do I clean it. If it's dirty, will it still burn properly? That doesn't seem to be a problem that I can tell.

okay, all I can give you is my experience (bear in mind that I'm not an expert, nor do I work for Apple in any ways). You can clean the lens by possibly getting a can of compressed air and using that, maybe trying one of those dvd cleaning discs with the brushes on them. You may have to shut down your Mac Pro 5,1 let it cool down a bit, remove the side panel, then take out and disconnect the dvd drive, take it out,  open it up and clean the lens with lens cleaning fluid (for eyeglasses, perhaps-this is just a suggestion, I've done it once and it hasn't done any harm) then put it back together,  put the drive back in the sled, reconnect it, slide the sled back in, put the side panel back and restart your mac pro. if you have an air compressor, maybe compressed air from a tank, with a blowing tool (the one with the button on the top) might work, if you were gentle, I suppose. Hopefully something fixes your problem, daliah, if not maybe try repairing permissions in disk utility, if nothing works, try posting here again, and you're still having problems reading dvd's, could be the media, could be the drive needs replacing (but who knows?)  replacing a dvd drive, should you need to, is very easy.  In a pinch, you can use a dvd drive scavenged from a PC, as long as it is ATAPI/IDE  and as long as it works
well, good luck to you

  • My DVD Drive Reads Burned DVD as a Blank DVD!!

    Hey Peeps,
I have a Macbook Pro, running 10.4.11. I've copied a few of my own DVD's for travel so my originals don't get punished. I burnt them with Toast Titanium 8.0.3. I've tested with DVD player and my roommates intel iMac and they work fine, but when i put the DVD in my drive it reads it as Blank media or an "Untitled DVD". I've used the same disks and method of burning hundreds of times before with this machine, and all of a sudden it doesn't read the disks anymore. My originals work fine as well.
I've already tried repairing the permissions, removing all cache and preferences, as well and booting of the system disk and repairing the drive. There is a Gremlin in my Macbook Pro.

I'm having the same problem with my MacBook Pro but with CDs. I burned a CD today and titled it; when complete, it shows on the desktop with the correct title. I then double clicked it to check the files and they opened just fine. Then I ejected the disk and reinserted it, only to see an untitled CD with NO content. Gave that disk to a friend with a PC and it read normally. Called Apple and the rep, who seemed very knowledgeable, said he'd never heard of it before. Tried disconnecting all peripherals and using different brand disks, same result. This has happened before 10.5 as well.
I make my living with this computer so this is a major problem. The MacBook Pro has given me more problems than all of my other Macs combined, beginning with the 512K 20 years ago.

  • " DVD RW Drive " is not reading / writing DVD. It can read only CD.

" DVD RW Drive "  is not reading / writing DVD.
The same DVD can be read on my frnds laptop.
Corresponding drivers r up to date.. I even tried uninstall and then restart and then let my laptop install the required driver automatically. I've tried everything I could find on some forums.
I was told to delete " Upper & Lower filters ". I didnt find Lower filter so I had to delete only "Upper Filter".
    Plz assist me..
I will be waiting for ur kind reply.
    Thank u so much.

The upper and lower filter thing only applies if the drive is not showing up at all in the Device Manager. If it appears as a drive and will perform any function at all, then it is likely a hardware issue. One way you can be sure is to try to boot from a bootable DVD such as a Windows 7 install Disk. If the computer will not boot from such a disk then it is apparent the hardware is defective, not the Windows software because the problem exists even before Windows loads.
The drive has multiple lasers and it is possible for one to go out but not the others.  The drive is easily replaced. See below:
This eBay seller ships worldwide. You would have to transplant your plastic drive face but that is very easy to do:

  • Unable to read burned dvd, unable to format dvd, and unable to burn dvd

Unable to read burned dvd, unable to format dvd, and unable to burn dvd with my HP G62-339WM Notebook PCI have been unable to perform the Windows back up for months without using new discs. But even after using new discs Windows backup tells me that the disc that I previously used that it is asking to insert is not formatted. I also have not been able to read any dvds that I previously burned, instead it will sometimes recognize them as blank and they are not.  I also cannot perform a format on new dvd discs nor burn to them. I have been able to read some previously burned discs on another pc but not the discs that were created with Windows backup. I have tried everything. I have uninstalled the device, ran the fix it, tried troubleshooting, checked the registry and could not find the upper and lower filters listed. I am however able to read program software and the autorun pops up. Once in a while the autorun will pop up when a blank disc is inserted but then that is all the further I am able to use it. I don't know what else to do. I really want to be able to at least burn files to back up so that they are not lost forever. Please help!

Fixed it myself - for some reason the La Cie refused to read the media. Had to use another machine to pull the data from the drive, copy it over the network to my iMac and then mount the ISO image.

  • CD/DVD drive does not read all DVD formats and regions

    Hi
My Teac-dw-224e-a does not read all DVDs formats and regions.
It does read CDs but no DVDs at all.
Not DVD-R and not even regular DVDs. I have checked the region of the DVD.
I have reinstalled the driver and also tried with different software.
    What can I do?
    Please help!

    Hi
It is possible that your DVD drive has wrong region settings.
In this case it is not able to watch all possible DVD movies from different regions.
Of course you can change the settings 4 times. But after this changing the settings are fixed and its not possible to change it anymore.

  • HT2801 My DVD drive is not reading any DVD

My iMac's DVD drive is not reading any DVD. Whenever I am inserting any DVD, The DVD icon is not appearing and the DVD is ejected out after sometime. I have also tried the troubleshooting steps given in the apple support site by restting the SMC but my iMac still does not read any DVD. What do I do now? Somebody help me.

Could try purchasing a commercially available, retail dry brush CD/DVD lens cleaning system disc. These can sometimes revive a malfunctioning optical disc drive.

  • I Mac is not reading from DVD drive. Disk will insert, then some noises but after a few seconds, nothing.

I Mac is not reading from DVD drive. Disk will insert, then some noises but after a few seconds, nothing. I am trying to install Broterh printer disks. Any ideas? I am on Mavericks.

Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • MacBook does not read blank DVD

I've been having this problem since yesterday. I've been using the same brand of DVDs for the last five months and have used Toast to burn quite a few DVDs.
Since yesterday, I've been experiencing this problem: I click the burn button on Toast, and insert the DVD. It fails to read it and spits it out.
I've tried running PatchBurn 4, and Reset the PRAM. What happens then is, I can mount the blank DVD on Finder, but when I try it with Toast, it doesn't work.
I then tried mounting it in Finder, started Toast, and clicked burn. I then got this message from Toast:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
Blank CDs mount without a problem, so do DVDs (same brand) that I had previously burned using Toast, as well as DVD movies.
What could be wrong? How could I fix it?

Wow! I've got the same problem. I was looking for a solution and found your post. This is my brother's kids computer (Macbook) so I don't have much history using it but I did burn a dvd on it around Christmas. Today, no luck. I'm using the same Taiyo Yuden dvd-r 's I used at Christmas and use all the time on my iMac. I can play a dvd and read/burn a cd but if I stick one of the blank dvd's in it just makes and effort to do something and then spits it out. It doesn't open in finder, work with disco or idvd. I guess the whole stack of dvd's could be bad but I doubt it. Tomorrow I have an appt. with a genius to remove one of the screws (crooked and stuck) that holds the ram door (bracket) in place. I'll ask him/her about the dvds when I'm there and post back. Anyone else have suggestions.

  • I have just put iCloud on my computer this week.  I have had multiple issues with it and my computer not working.  Thought I worked most of the bugs out with updates etc, but now it will not read my dvd's or audio books.  Why is this?

  • DVD burner won't read burned DVD's

We have a dual 2Ghz G5 with 2.5Gb's of ram that used to be able to read DVD's that had been burned. Now it will read only commercial DVD's and CD's (it can burn CD's fine). It won't accept non-burned DVD-R's either.

    Hi.
I have almost the same problem:
I bought an PM G5 2x2Ghz with 1Ghz of RAM in november 2003, and my superdrive is a model PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D that used to brun any kind of dvd's an cd's and had no problem to read burn dvd's.
But now, it can only burn DVD-R (but no problem for the CD's) and most of the old Dvd's that i burned on my G5 can't be read anymore.
Can someone tell me what's the problem and how can it be solved.
    thank you very much.
    bye.
PS: Is it normal thaht i've never been able to read a DVD's burned from windows on MAC OSX but CD's yes?

  • I want to use my home dvd player to burn dvds/cds onto my MacBook Air. Please help!?

I want to use my home dvd player to burn dvds/cds onto my MacBook Air. I have an hdmi cord with thunderbolt connector. Where do I go from here?

Apps for OSX aren't in iTunes: they are in the App Store in your Applications folder. The payment method is the one registered in iTunes. There's no app actually called Yoga Studio, though there are several Yoga apps. There is an iOS app called Yoga Studio but it appears to have no OSX equivalent, though I haven't done a detailed search.

Hi i am having a i MAC which has mountain lion OS 10.8.2. I am facing teh followwing issues with my disk drive
    1. I am unable to read all DVDS in it some DVDS work while others do not

" Unable to caliberate lazer power"
    3. Kindly assit me in solving this problem

    Hi
    Four thoughts
    • Brand and type of DVD/CD Media
    • Burn Speed ?
    • Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
    • Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
Brand and type of DVD/CD Media: MATTERS
    - Memorex, NoName and other Cheap brands - most probably works for other things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO.
    I only use Verbatim
    - DVD-RW - usually do not work OK but with various kinds of problems. DVD+R is a more modern sort and use to give problems on older DVD-players
    I only use DVD-R
Burn Speed (in iDVD or alike): Matters
    • Best or Max - is not best
I set it down to x2 or x4 Max
Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
I use one WITHOUT Liquid but with brushes from time to time
Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
    - Due to that Mac OS X - is UNIX - it behaves likewise. It needs lot's of space on Boot / Start-Up Hard Disk for it's and the applications temp files.
I never go less than 25GB free space - If HD-Video material is used then 4-5 times more is a good thing.
    Yours Bengt W

The DVD drive will recognize data CD's but this Adobe DVD just churns and hums for 30 seconds and then the drive ejects the disk.

After reading the boards, it sounds like the Pioneer DVR-112D 18X DVD Burner (Drive only) is the unit to buy and replace this Sony one.
There appears to be a spacer issue related to the door on the G5 Tower case. Will the spacers from the Sony unit work on the Pioneer unit, or can the Pioneer unit just be installed as is using the existing ribbon cable. I've read the PMG5OpticalDriveDIY.pdf replacement manual, but am confused about SuperDrives vs. the Pioneer DVR-112D.
Can anyone clarify the details of replacement?
Also, will I need new software (Roxio, Toast) to burn CD's and DVD's after replacing the drive?
    thanks, and best regards,
    Eric

  • New DVD Drive reads some DVD's not all, why?

    Hi,
I recently replaced my old dvd/cd drive in my notebook pavillion 2945se.  It seems to work well except it only reads some store bought dvd's.   It can read Star Trek: voyager, dc movies, disney,  star wars discs, and most other store bought dvds  but doesn't read marvel movies, import movies.
All of these were readable with my old drive.  All other functions such as burning dvd/cd, and even lightscribing work.  I have updated as far as everything that I can including codecs and using microsoft "fix-it" support which actually fixed some burning issues.
My theory is that the drive is more sensitive to flawed or dirtier discs, but considering these were readable before.  Is there a fix for this?
I'm hoping that there is a fix for this since there are not many options for my laptop drive.  Currently it is:
tsst corp cd/dvdw ts-l632m ata device
    Thanks for your help.

Firmware update of DVD drive may solve your problem. But the main problem is to find the correct one. I found this by google.
However, I'm not recommend it, since I dont have real experience updating ts-l632m. I updated my DVD drive of dell notebook a while ago but using the recommended firmware from dell site.
