T42p CD-ROM/DVD not responding
Hello All!
My CD/DVD is not responding when I insert a disc. It's showing up in the files section but it's not reading or playing anything.
Is this a driver issue or hardware issue?
Solved!
Go to Solution. If it is the same CD drive that worked in the same T42p before and you haven't recently flashed the drive or your BIOS or other critical file system driver in Windows.....
your drive is going out. BUT, TAKE A $4 can of compressed air and blast out anything that comes off and do so until clean.
Next, carefully and gently slide back and forth a few times the reader assembly, it is theapparatus typically parked at the cneter spindle and can be carefully hand worked since older drives may be dry of adequate grease to keep the tracks responsive.
If the drive is just stuck, it would spit errors at the OS and may relay to the end user or not.
If that drive didn't come with that PC and never worked before, then conduct the research with respetive model numbers since drives can be flashed and the possibilities and combinations are endless to describe here.v
Don't just sit there, take a second and use the Kudo's button to compliment the people who help you. -
I have never had a machine that has a DVD/CD burner before. Only my work machine has one...so ready to go...I put in a cd wanting to pull some photos off that I had on it. I put it in the CD/DVD drive and nothing. The machine doesn't seem to know it has a CD/DVD drive at all.
Under computer, it shows a C drive and D drive and several removable drives. But nothing else. I have deleted the drivers and made the machine re-find drivers. Thinking it was just a glitch that could fix itself but nope that didn't work. Any idea's.
This is the first time I have used it. Not sure what to do. Not all that clear on the in's and out's of Vista just yet either. So maybe I am missing something. Please help. Thanks! If it is the same CD drive that worked in the same T42p before and you haven't recently flashed the drive or your BIOS or other critical file system driver in Windows.....

DVD Burner not responding after installing Mountain Lion - Macbook Pro
The superdrive can play a disc but when trying to burn a DVD with programs like DVD2Onex, Toast and DVD Studio Pro I get an error message stating, in so many words, that the drive is either busy or not responding.
It was perfectly fine until I installed Mountain Lion.
What in the world. I got some DVDs to burn. I need to burn VIDEO_TS files, not iso, imgs or anything like that. I need to know why I can no longer burn anything since installing this terrible OS.great

Attempt to open Library - FCPX (not responding)
Running latest OS on my 2008 MacPro.
Have been editing for weeks, no trouble opening the Library containing a 2-hour film ready to be burned to a DVD.
Yesterday it opened fine, but after I closed FCPX and then, a little later, tried to open that Library... the spinning beach ball of death.
Every attempt at repairing preferences, etc. failed.
Just now I uninstalled FCPX and reinstalled it.
Every other Library except the project I need to access opens.
I attempted to open the back-up: it brings about the spinning beach ball of death too. In Force Quit: FCPX (not responding).
Here's the latest of about 15 crash reports... with a film due to be distributed to cast and crew... this is frustrating.
Appreciate any help with restoring this project.
Thanks,
Cat

Hi Russ,
Thanks.
I think I follow... only... I can't open the Library to get to the projects that I'd want to move to a new library...
I can open all Libraries except the one containing my film.
I've been trying to figure out how to place the inaccessible projects (film scenes) into a new library WITHOUT opening FCPX.
FYI, when I tried to open backups (from dates when I'd had no problems closing/re-opening the Library in question) everything seems fine (i.e., my projects/scene seem to be read easily) until I get to the FILM.fcpbundle. Once this enters the mix, FCPX crashes.
Thanks again.
Appreciated!

ITunes 11 Not Responding When I Try to Burn a CD
So.. I have a Windows PC, Windows 7 64Bit. I installed the latest version of iTunes.
When I insert a CD-R to burn, it immediately goes into "NOT RESPONDING" mode.
Now, I don't even get that pop-up that allows me to choose CD, Data Disc or MP3 disc. That no longer pops up as it's already in NOT RESPONDING mode.
So, here's what I have tried.
(ALL of these steps did NOT fix the issue)
Deleting and re-installing iTunes.
Tried 6 different brands and types of CD-Rs. Regular, LightScribe, Memorex brand, Maxell brand, Philips brand, etc. No difference.
Updating the drivers of the DVD-ROM/recordable drive.
Did a Window update.
Deleted the drivers for the drive and let Windows Re-install them
Uncheck the "Search Entire Library" option in hourglass search because that, too, freezes iTunes 11.
Repair iTunes (vs. remove).
When none of this worked, I said "Forget this, iTunes 11 isn't stable. I'm going back to version 10.7!"
So, I uninstalled/removed iTunes 11.
I found the install for iTunes 10.7.
I tried to install iTunes 10.7
I got this error: "iTUNES 10.7 Cannot be used because the iTunes library was created in a later version of iTunes"
Lovely.
So, what was left?? I tried SYSTEM RESTORE.
Re-installed iTunes 11.
Did not help.
When I tried to re-install iTunes 10.7, it would NOT open so I cannot go find PREVIOUS iTunes Libraries and use those.

First: I get the message telling me that "iTunes was unable to load data class information from Sync Services. Reconnect or try again later."
Second: In the Summary Tab under Backups, iTunes is telling me that my iPhone has never been backed up to my computer - which is not true. It's also telling me that my iPhone has never been backed up to iCloud. Again, not true. Although my backups are all missing from iTunes, I can see what I think is them in their folder: C:\Users\*your user name here*\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync.
Third: iTunes is SLOOOOOOOOW. It takes nearly ten minutes - sometimes more - to launch, and when it does, it's constantly not responding. It seems every time I touch something it stops responding.
Fourth: I've been searching this "help" forum for a solution, and I've seen many other references, yet the only suggestion I've seen from someone from Apple is a reference to a solution that is over 2 years old - and DOESN'T WORK for anyone I can see who's tried it!
I've tried everything I could think of, and that others have suggested, including:
Uninstalling and re-installing iTunes
Ensuring I have the latest version of iTunes
Re-setting sync history
Renaming my Backup folder at the path above, and letting iTunes create a new one
Running around the house whilst pulling my hair and yelling obscenities
None helped. At all.
Hmmm... Been a devoted Apple/iOS guy for years, but maybe it's time to switch to Android?I've resolved the issue with iTunes constantly not responding. It's a bit embarrassing. I had a DVD in the drive that was corrupt, and once I was able to remove it - BAM - iTunes ran perfectly.
I'm still getting the Sync Services message, and my backups are still not showing in iTunes.
Getting there.... I hope! -
Finder Not Responding OS 10.4
HELP! While dragging a bunch of photos from a file to the Trash, I accidently dropped them on the desktop. I now have over 4,000 photos copying to my iMac desktop--or trying to. Finder is not responding. I have relaunched and forced a restart. It has been more than an hour and my desktop appears to be frozen--or, at best, still "working".
Is there anything I can do to stop the copy process? Do you think it will eventually finish copying?Keep an eye on disk space. If it ever flows over 85% full, most have found that to be the point of diminishing returns when it comes to filling up the hard drive. Burn to CD and DVD what you can beyond that until you can get another drive. See my backup FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
and my disk full FAQ
http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
Hopefully that will help you in the future.

Decided to update iphone 4 to ios 5.1 and mid update it froze and the screen is black. Phone does not respond to any combinations of home and power buttons, when plugged into computer it does not see it is plugged in so I cannot restore or anything. Looks like the screen is on it's just unresponsive and black obviously. Has anyone had this problem? I was updating via wifi right in front of my router and my computer.
Spoke to a "senior advisor" in the Apple TV department. Her suggestions: change channel in router to minimize/eliminate wifi interference from other users; move router away from any metal - i.e., DVD player, phone modem, etc.; keep router away from wireless 2.4 gH phones, which are "notorious" for crashing wifi routers. So she confirms that the problem is one of connection to router suddenly dropping out.
My own feeling is that none of these fixes will do the trick, because it seems pretty clear that there is a hardware component here - the timing of the drops seems like an overheating issue. It takes 35-40 minutes for the box to warm up enough for the first drop; then each consecutive drop happens quicker than the one before, as it heats up more. Each time it drops, its tiny brain gets a little more scrambled; last night it finally wouldn't start up again at all.
My suggestion is that everyone who is experiencing this problem, please call Apple tech support and ask to speak to a senior advisor in the Apple TV department. Make them aware of this problem! -
I have a Sony DWQ28A Dual Layer DVD burner that I have put up as an external drive attaching to a Firewire hub. Tne Mini does not recognize the burner at all. I have tried Disk Utility and there is no drive showing.
I have heard that Patchburn may be a fix but I have also heard that it works and then it doesn't. I have also seen that Toast Lite 6 should be used with this burner in Mac 10.X environments but I am hesitant to go there when the burner is not being recognized at all.
I would rather ask questions beofre I start downlaoding stuff that is not going to do the job.
Any thoughts?I just got a reply from tech support at Sony concerning my problems with my DRX530UL burner (external DVD burner did not respond properly). They say that it is not supported for Mac at all.
They listed two drives that are supported for 10.2 and up: the DRX720UL/T and the DRX710UL/T. Note: the /T means Mac compatible! The drives with the same model numbers and no /T are NOT Mac compatible!
The 710 has a slower sustained and burst data rate, (16MB/s vs 21, and 66mbps vs 480mbs), and the 720 comes with Nero and Toast Lite.
Both drives do DVD-R/-RW, DVDR/+RW/+RDL/RWDL, etc etc.
My burner is several years old, and at $180usd, I can afford to upgrade to DL support.
I guess the moral of the story is that if Sony doesn't say it's Mac-compatible, it's pot luck. -
I have had an interesting week. Beginning on Tuesday, my computer began acting unstable. Tried to reinstall the operating system - caused me to replace the current disk with my weekly backup disk. Yet, when I operate the current system, I find that programs (except those requiring video such as DVD player or Quicktime) work well but the finder is not responding. Was able to run EtreCheck. According to the report, the only process was that highlighted in red was com.apple.iconServices Agent.
I have repaired permissions and cleaned the cache. Attached is the report from EtreCheck. Any ideas what is going wrong and how to correct it? TIA.
Steve

Hey New User here
Actually I had a G4 desktop and have just upgraded to the MacProBook Core Duo 2.
Ok here is the issue- over the weekend I had create these movies in iMovie. The first one was 33 minutes with audio and ken burns effects, still photos, transitions and video clips.
It took about 2.5 hours to finish rendering, encoding and finally burn.
The second of the two films also had the same things but is 55 minutes long. This one I spent several hours allowing it to do its encoding and rendering- maybe 4-5. It went through everything but then never burned the disk. I had to stop the process b/c I needed to present the movie at that point.
Based on the previous posts I have read it seems that my computer does not take as long to do the processing as many others.
Since the showing I have tried to clear my computer of the clutter, removing snips that were created in many attempts at the film. Now when I try to access iDVD (not the previous movie) I get no response.
I have looked in the Force Quit Menu and it does not say (Not Responding).
Any thoughts?
And should I just be happy with the amount of time that it takes for me to make the iDVDs?
MacProBook 15 in Mac OS X (10.4.8) Core Duo 2 2.33Hi John
Two things.
Coding - processing time: Greatly depends on CPU speed, free amount of space
on Your internal hard disk and complexity of the movie.
- free space should be about 25Gb, 5 or less Gb = redicolous times (not hours but days)
- one still photo for 1 hour = less complex than 60 min of panorerings and
heavy action.
ActivityMonitor - lies reg what's happening during audio coding part of DVD
processing. iDVD doesn't respond. Just a lie !! It doesn't get it.
So as well if You force quit - it says the same. Don't belive it.

External optical drive (HP) not responding to iDVD
My new (HP) external optical drive does not respond to iDVD. When I go to click burn it is darkened. In my system profiler it has -R and -RW listed, but under burn support it says "Yes (unsupported)". The computer responded when I insterted a blank DVD. What does this mean and how do I make it work?
PowerBookG4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) Combo drive, 768 MB memory, 1.33 processorHi and welcome!
iDVD 4 did not natively support and external burner. But, you should use DVD-R disks.
You will need to look at these:
BURN DVDS TO AN EXTERNAL BURNER OR A DISK IMAGE WITH iDVD:

Hello: Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Could you specify the Mac OS X version and also what computer you
are using it on, with some detail? Some of these kinds of issues, while
they may seem the same across various years of OS X, can have
different causes and also different cures.
With that information, someone may be capable of researching a reply
most suited to try & see if it works in your computer + OS X system.
One idea, which may/may not help, would be to start the computer
from its most recent OS X DVD install disc, unless it has OS X 10.7
or Later, where there is a Recovery partition on the HDD to boot from.
Then use Disk Utility> repair disk, while there, also repair permissions.
Thanks.
Good luck & happy computing!
