DVD optical cable to iPod HiFi sputtering

I recently bought a new DVD player with optical output. I bought an optical cable to connect it to my iPod HiFi. However the only audio that emerges is this bizzare sputtering, like a tiny engine or something - "pff pff pff pff pff pff pff", etc. I'm new to the world of optical connections. Any guidance as to what this problem could be?
Standard RCA to miniplug works fine, but I really wanted to try this optical hookup thing.

The thing is that, even though iPod HiFi does have optical input, it does not have integrated digital decoder for multi-channel signal decoding. To put it in a few words, DVD audio is usually Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1/6.1/7.1. This is not possible to listen on iPod HiFi because it does not understand that complex signal and cannot translate it to analog audio output it supports, hence the digital buzzing sound you hear when you connect a digital optical source. Try playing a DVD with your Mac’s DVD Player app and change the sound output format from analog to digital when connected to iPod HiFi by optical cable and you will hear what I am trying to explain.

  • MBP with IPod HiFi and Optical Cable Problem??

Hey guys, I just picked up a Hifi and was hoping to use it with my macbook pro. When I hook up a normal 3.5mm jack into the hifi's input it works, but when I use an optical cable it does not. Using the volume keys on my mbp bring up the normal Volume icon on-screen but there is a small circle with a line through it just below. Also, in the system preferences, under Sound and Output it says "The selected device has no output controls"
Any ideas? Can it work with optical cables? I can always use a traditional 3.5mm jack but would prefer the optical
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It works in my case, I am now playing a song on my Itunes from my computer's optical out (G5 Tower) to iPod HiFi via a digital optical cable
Connect external speakers, headphones, or optical digital audio equipment. The headphone / line output jack accommodates optical digital audio output, analog audio output with a 24-bit, 44.1-192 kHz D/A converter, digital audio output up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-192 kHz sampling rate and supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS). For analog headphone / line output a standard audio cable with 3.5mm metal plug should be used. For digital audio, a standard toslink cable with a toslink mini-plug adapter can be used.
Open System Reference, sound, then output, in the box of choose a device for sound output , do you see the digital out, optical digital-out port?
Make sure out the output volume, the mute box is unchecked.
Regarding, the volume key on the computer is disable when your are using the optical output

  • IPod Hifi optical cable pin broke into outlet

I used an optical cable with a plastic adapter to connect to iPod HiFi. While moving the box the pin broke into the outlet. I tried hard using a fine gripper but no chance. Any ideas how to get it out to be able to connect a new cable ?
I think this is poor design of Apple HiFi as optical cables are often made of plastic that can not handle the forces. Other devices like Apple TV (HiFi was connected with it) use less mechanically sensitive (square) optical outlet.
iPod HiFi Apple TV   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

The HiFi is designed to use 3.5mm connectors (which is what broke off in yours) and can be used with Toslink cables with an adapter, primarily for connecting to an Airport Express or a computer. The type of connector you are referring to would not work in the above situation. In my opinion it is overkill to use the Toslink cables anyway unless all your music is in AIFF. 128 AAC doesn't need it.
I'd look for any local stereo repair place and take it to them. I'm sure they have lots of experience removing broken connectors.
Incidentally, it is a user error to move an audio device with a fragile adapter connected to it.

  • IPod Hi-Fi Digital Optical Cable

It says cables are not included in the box. Where can I get the digital optical cable? I don't see it in the "Store". Please advise.

You can get the optical cable from many shops, including the computer, audiophile and general electronic shops
Bear in mind - the optical cable that most computer, dvd, and cd players using is called "toslink", however, the iPod HiFi's aux input is combined of analogue and optical i.e. minijack (analogue i.e.AUX in and optical mini plug)
You probably have this toslink cable in your home, check the cables came from your DVD or CD players. If you can find this cable, what you need is buy a pair of this mini plug adapter for toslink, then you can connect your CD players (optical out for toslink at this end) and iPod HiFi Aux in (with toslink + mini plug adapter)

  • Best Way (cables) to hook up apple tv , ipod hifi and lcd tv

Hi everyone, i would like to know how is the best way to hook up those three devices, i would like the sound of the apple tv to go out from the ipod hifi with digital audio cable and the apple tv acting as the airtunes. Thank you in advance.

Your best connection to the tv will be HDMI, failing which use component.
The  ipod hifi has a 3.5 mm mini jack I believe but I don't think the tv optical doubles as a mimi jack, so I believe you would use a 3.5 mm mini jack to stereo RCA cable for the audio connection.

  • Ipod Hifi + Airport Express - Do I need a cable as well ??

    Folks
I've just ordered an Ipod Hifi ( I hope they don't bring out a black one now! ) and an Airport Express from Amazon - much cheaper than Apple store.
I'd like to use Airtunes from my laptop via Airport Express and also have the Hifi connected up to an LCD TV to improve the sound.
Which connection cable do I need to order for here in the UK ?

    Hi,
You need only one of the following cable for connection between Airport Express and iPod HiFi
    1. For optical cable for Mini-Adapter

    2. For Analogue

  • How do I get good audio feed from DVD player to my MBP using an optic cable

I have successfully recorded audio off of concert DVD's using Sound Studio 3 by connecting my DVD player to my MBP using left/right outputs to a 35mm input. I purchased an optical cable, connected it to my DVD player and used a 35mm adapter to connnect it to my MBP input. All I get is a weird popping interferance type sound instead of clear audio. Any tips on what is going on? I have correct settings in system preferences (recognizes an optical connection) but all I hear is noise?
    Thanks for any help!

I just use mac the ripper with the following instructions
    http://www.ripdifferent.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1249&sid=de5cc9506c05b6ba98d6 530884489333
It gives you a few options for audio, I generally save as AAC though you can rip as AIFF and then encode into just about anything with quicktime.

  • IPod HiFi A1121 power supply unit

    Hi there,
I have an iPod HiFi A1121 and am aware it is discontinued.  My power supply unit is the problem with mine, but due to the fact it seems quite complex and there are 3 different output wattages on it, it doesn't seem to be something I can just find a similar one of.  Does anyone have a broken HiFi that they are prepared to part with, or does anyone know of anywhere I might be able to find a power supply unit from that would enable me to use my HiFi?  It works on battery power and my friend has an adapter, that allows mains usage, but it means it will only play music to the same level as with batteries.  Pleeeeeaassee could someone help me with any information?  Thanks very much

    Thanks!
Interesting, this "Piggy back power adapter" will allow me to plug the fan into one of the ATA/IDE cables? Or do you mean the extra port on the power supply? (it has one plug for the outlet>G4, then another to support something like a monitor or similar) The G4 has a DVD burner, but no ZIP drive, so this is quite do-able if it uses the ATA power.
When you say "lower rear", do you mean at the bottom? Below the power supply, to the right of the PCI slots? If so, this is the inflow for the CPU fan! I can understand mounting it outside the current outflow-vent for the dead power supply fan, although I'm not sure the best way to proceed with attaching the fan.
Another question: what tools and supplies will I need? I may need to remove the plastic cover on the back of the G4 - the one that is outside the power supply - as there's a gap between the gray plastic and metal chassis that lets air from outside the machine come in. The screws for this cover use a funky, hexagonal screwdriver. If I need to take this cover off, what kind of screwdriver will I need? Also, should the fan not include screws/etc, what's the best method to attach it? Glue?
Secondly, to cut a hole in the G4, will I need some variety of drill? I don't have one, so i'll have to borrow one... Since there's nothing in the ZIP slot, I can run a cable out through here (assuming it's long enough), and make a new bezel to keep the airflow inside intact.
Ah! One other (somewhat related) question: my USB 2 card includes a power adapter, for use when several un-powered devices (flash drives) are attached. It works just fine with a flash drive and a small media reader, but it's slow to sense the drives - I think it's low on power. Unfortunately, this power plug uses the same variety of plug as the floppy disk drives found on many win-boxes - of which the G4 possesses none. Is there an adapter/cable for this purpose?
Thanks, this is a HUGE help, I appreciate it.
    -Dan

  • Ipod HiFi using Airport Express

Anything I can do to eliminate distortion when I play songs from my computer via Airport Express on my Ipod HiFi? I've tried adjusting the volume, but songs still sound distorted; they get worse if I crank up the volume.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

first, make sure you play the same music file on your computer without any distortion, if yes check the EQ setting on your iTunes. Then recheck the following:-
    1. Are you using the optical cable from airport express to iPod HiFi or analogue minijack cable?, see change the type of cable help.
    2. Check your cable and make sure it is not a faulty one
    3. Is the signal of your airport express is strong enough?
    4. Make sure you plug tight enough on output of airport express and input of iPod HiFi
    5. Disconnecting your iPod HiFi for 15 minutes and try again

  • New ipod nano doesn't fit new ipod hifi

I just bought a new 4 meg ipod nano and apple ipod hifi from the London Apple Store. The ipod nano doesn't fit in its adapter. Anyone know of this problem? I'm gobsmacked that Apple's quality control let this happen!
    Thanks

    The page
    http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html
    clearly says:
    In the box:
    * iPod nano
    * Earphones
    * USB 2.0 cable
    * Dock adapter
    * Quick Start guide
If the dock adapter is missing, which is what you need, because the iPod Hi-Fi only ships with an adapter for the 1st-gen iPod nano, then you need to contact Apple or your retailer.

  • Apple Tv sound dropout with optical cable

    Hi there,
First of all Merry Christmas to everybody out there...
I received yesterday for christmas the latest apple TV.
I connected it to my tv with HDMI cable and to hifi, bose home cinema lifestyle 28, with optical cable.
Sound through HDMI cable is perfect but...playing music from macbook pro or iphone 4S through optical cable is a problem.
I have sound drop outs for a second now and then...
Cable is well attached on both sides...
What do i have to do?
    Kind regards,
    Laurent

I also have this problem...  Any ideas

  • IPod Hifi as Home Cinema Speakers!! Opinion anyone ?

Ok theres no surround sound option but I wanted to do a quick test with a new LCD projector I bought. I hooked it up to a DVD and then the sound went straight from the DVD player to the input socket on the back of the iPod HIFI and to be honest I was listening to it and thinking **** this is really good sound!! now I'm the first to admit that I am obviously not a complete freak when it comes to sound and as long as it sounds okay to me then thats all that matters. I just wanted to hear other peoples views on using the iPod Hifi as a home cinema solution (minus the surround sound part!!!)

Starfrog, I think you've answered your own question already. You tried it, liked it, and profess not to be a sound freak, so stick with it. you could have hundreds of purists tell you it's no good, but at the end of the day, it works for you and that's all that matters.
The sound is great, I love mine and am glad to finally be rid of the tiny, tinny little stopgaps that preceded this unit - but I wont be replacing my home theater speaker setup with the HiFi.

  • Connecting TV to iPod HiFi

Simple question, but can I find an answer?
I'm going to use my iPod HiFi as additional speakers for my Samsung flat screen TV. The TV has a 3.5mm headphone socket and standard RCA phono outputs. Is it better to get a 3.5mm-3.5mm cable and connect the HiFi to the headphone socket, or get a phono-3.5mm cable and connect to the stereo outputs?
    bestest,
    M.

I can only speak for myself, I will pick a cable of RCA (connecting with your TV) and a 3.5mm jack to the iPod HiFi.

  • 30-pin to RCA cable for iPod Touch??

Are there any cables out there than connect to the iPod Touch 30 pin port, to RCA (left right audio). I would like to connect the iPod to my home stereo system without using a cradle or to my car aux input (making a custom-built kit) so I really need a high-quality cable only (not from the headphone jack). I see some for older ipods, but for Ipod touch??
    Please help!!

I believe you are talking this type of cable

I have not tried yet myself, but as a hardware issue - it should work for iTouch, bear in mind, both iPod and iTouch works on my iPod HiFi (via dock). Unless the software is not compatible .... e.g. iTouch is not working on my car stereo via dock.
